A REPORTER GUESSED THIS OVER A MONTH AGO! (5, Informative)

Real Troll Talk (793436) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791364)

A USA Today reporter guessed this title over a month ago! We can't believe it.

Listen up, this is a true story!

Last month we were reading this USA Today article at http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2004-06-14-aid s-benefit_x.htm [usatoday.com] .

We forgot we had read it, but just now we went back to the article and remembered the final few paragraphs of the reporter interviewing Lucas at a gay AIDS banquet:

"We caught George Lucas wandering around the grounds with his daughter, Katie. The director said the title of Star Wars: Episode III won't officially be announced until November, when the first trailer hits theaters.

But he conceded that fans on Web sites already have guessed correctly. So we threw a couple of rumored titles at him: Rise of the Empire? "No, that's not it," Lucas said. How about Revenge of the Sith?

With that, Lucas smiled knowingly, backed away and teased, "That's a possibility. Lots of titles out there ...""

Can you believe THAT?! He basically gave it away over a month ago and no one said anything for the most part!

Anyway, that's awesome, but we have some other suggestions. We just don't care for the title that Lucas picked.

Here. Here's a poll for your favorite GOOD Star Wars title.

Pick from the following and reply to this post with your favorite:

Star Wars Episode III: Dawn of the Empire
Star Wars Episode III: Final Strike
Star Wars Episode III: The Fallen Jedi
Star Wars Episode III: The Lost Prophecy
Star Wars Episode III: The Deception
Star Wars Episode III: Hope Lost
Star Wars Episode III: The Lost one

I dunno how much the plot of the first episode resembled a sunday morning cartoon (maybe the characters did)...Seriously, what do kids know about trade sanctions, diplomatic engagements and senate politics? Except that they make for a boring setup for a movie that's supposed to be an exciting epic space opera.

Still, I liked it more than Ep.2.

How about "Return of Star Trek"? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#9791485)

Science fiction is a lagging franchise. George Lucas could revive interest in it by tying together two major science-fiction themes: Star Wars and Star Trek. In Star Wars III, the Jedis briefly encounter a Vulcan spacecraft on their way to do battle with the Dark Force.

This brief encounter could become the basis of interesting plots in Star Wars 7, 8, and 9.

Let's face the harsh reality. After the triple blockbusters of Star Wars 4, 5, and 6, the audience for Star Wars has declined significantly, partially due to the declining talents of George Lucas. As for Star Trek, consider "Enterprise". Need I say more?

Re:How about "Return of Star Trek"? (2, Informative)

casuist99 (263701) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791545)

But the Vulcans are supposedly from our own galaxy, not a galaxy far, far away. Oh, and vulcan space travel would be occurring now or in the future vs. a long time ago as Star Wars supposedly took place.

I promised myself I wasn't going to get excited by Episode III, but that's a really good, appropriate title! Here's the AICN story [aintitcoolnews.com] with the logo, and here's the mirrored text:

Aside from the long-awaited revelation of the title of Episode III, fans had lots of Star Wars news to absorb and be excited about at the Star Wars Spectacular presentation at Comic-Con. Steve Sansweet, Head of Fan Relations for Lucasfilm, hosted the two-hour long panel, full of exclusive video clips and a number of surprise guests.

Much of the news centered around three simple letters: DVD. 2004 is the year to substantially expand your Star Wars DVD collection. While the Star Wars Trilogy is the biggest news for Force-fan videophiles, Sansweet announced the fall debut of Ewoks and Droids adventures on DVD. 20th Century Fox Home Video will release these animated adventures as well as the pair of made-for-television Ewok live action movies (The Ewok Adventure and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor) this November and December.

September 21, of course, is the release date for the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD. The presentation included clips of some of the bonus material found in the boxed set, as well as a first look at the animated menus that organize the wealth of information and options within. Jim Ward, Vice President of Marketing for Lucasfilm and Executive Producer of the DVDs spoke about the upcoming release, and announced that the epic feature-length documentary, Empire of Dreams: The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy, would appear as a special edited-for-television edition on the A&E network this fall.

In other DVD news, Sansweet confirmed a projected release date for the much-asked-about Star Wars: Clone Wars DVDs. The incredibly successful 20 chapters of the Cartoon Network animated shorts will be making their home video debut next spring, around the same time as the airdate for the final batch of Clone Wars shorts from Genndy Tartakovsky and Paul Rudish.

But before that, an essential George Lucas film will make its DVD debut. Sansweet took the opportunity to screen the theatrical trailer to THX 1138: The George Lucas Director's Cut , as well as premiere an all-new trailer to the Comic-Con audience. This video will soon make its way to the official THX 1138 website, which will soon be posting a theater list for the select cities that will be exhibiting the film prior to its DVD release.

On the Episode III front, the biggest news was the confirmation of the Episode III title, and the availability of a shirt with said title at StarWarsShop.com. Sansweet also welcomed two very special Revenge of the Sith guests: Producer Rick McCallum, and the Chosen One himself, Hayden Christensen.

[ Comic-Con International 2004 ]Fans in attendance also got a first look at Hasbro's forthcoming packaging design for Episode III product. The stylized visage of Darth Vader looms large over a chaotic field of molten lava.

Star Wars Spectacular debuted an advance look at two pieces of Episode III-related video that will be found as bonus material in the Star Wars Trilogy DVD set. "Episode III: Making the Game" went behind-the-scenes on LucasArts' forthcoming tie-in video game. An edited version of "The Return of Darth Vader" revealed the gleaming Darth Vader armor from Episode III and showed Christensen donning the armor for the Dark Lord's debut.

For an in-depth account of the presentation, including exclusive imagery and select video, check out the expanded coverage available only to members of Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club.

... and now, the annoying part is that Vader will be in, what was it said, only the last 5 minutes or so?

I would be more excited if the actual transformation took place somewhere in the middle of the movie and we actually saw the effects of Darth Vader rising to power, but so far I haven't seen anything telling this.

Re:Damn it, damn it, damn it (4, Insightful)

rppp01 (236599) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791552)

I think this is the draw for me, with regards to the franchise.

I loved the evil evil person that darth vader was. He scared me. His empire scared me. And there was this small group of people fighting this monolith of evil.

The prequels have been about 'nobility' as it slowly falls to this rise of this evil. But it hasn't done anything to make me feel like the 'evil' side of things did in the first 3.

And I just watched them 2 weeks ago. I saw them as a kid, and Vader still is 'the man' when it comes to bad guys. No amount of R2D2, or Boba Fett or Yoda will change that.

Re:Damn it, damn it, damn it (1)

bckrispi (725257) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791575)

That depends on your "point of view". It's been speculated (and hinted at through Lucasfilm) that Anakin assumes the title of Darth Vader and Sith Apprentice sometime midfilm. However, we won't see the Vader costume that we know and love until the end.

how much more continuity Lucas is going to flush down the toilet with this film. He gives the book writers creative license but makes them follow a pre-determined origin and fate with the characters, and then totally pisses on them with the movies. Boba Fett is a prime example. In the books, he was Jaster Mareel before he was Boba Fett. His ship was custom made, not a stolen prison ship. The ship part was taken from the Bounty Hunter video game. It was a good game, but still didn't do a good job of repairing the Bobba/Jango/Jaster thing. LOL....I guess this post proves I have no life.

Re:One has to wonder (1)

Rallion (711805) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791608)

It is kind of upsetting. The Boba Fett described in the novels is a hell of a character. Strong values and sense of morality. Respect for authority, no matter who has it. Uncommon traits for a bounty hunter.

The person he's turned into in the movies is just your everyday bounty hunter. Those bounty hunters in Chronicles of Riddick have better characters than this guy.

We can lack lives together.

He wanted 'Revenge of the Jedi' but people prtested that Jedis do not seek revenge.

So now they have 'Revenge od the Sith'. Fine Sith is all about revenge, but what is it a revenge of? did a Jedi knock up palpatines sister and Now he wnats to get even? Did Obi-One park in the 'Sith of the months' parking spot?

Unfortuantly I have high hopes for this movie, becasue I know how he cold fit it all together...everything.
He won't.

Best case scenerio: He does fot it all together, and it is different than how I see it can come together...at they get someone who can act to play Anakin.

Interesting, the actor that play anakin can't act..and the actor who play's his son also can't act. hmmmmm

I know you're just joking around, but I think you're making a good point here. At no point have we seen any motivation for why the Sith are the way they are. I think this signficantly detracts from the movies. If Lucas decides to explain the source of the Sith's hatred in this final film, I would definitely appreciate the effort (as long as he doesn't reduce it to something as stupid as mitochlorians).

In the 2-on-1 lightsabre duel from Epsiode I there is a moment where the fighting has ceased. Gui-Con and Darth Maul are separated by a plasma wall and Obi-won is even further away. Maul walks around like a caged tiger while Gui-Con just sits there meditating. This is not exciting! This does not build suspense! This does not move the story foward! I couldn't believe that they would just sit there like that. That was the perfect opportunity for a short conversation between warriors to take place and give the audience insight into the conflict! Doesn't Maul have anything to say? Doesn't he even want to mock the jedi? Is Gui-Con so dead to the world that he's not even remotely curious why this guy has appeared out of nowhere to kill him?

I, too, would like to know what this "revenge" the Sith want is all about. Here's hoping that Lucas will finally answer this question in the new film. Otherwise, it just becomes a stupid white hats vs. black hats space western. Aren't we a little old for that?

Re:he just had to have revenge (5, Funny)

drinkypoo (153816) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791536)

I take issue with your statement that there's no explanation as to why the sith are the way they are. We've been beaten over the head with it through the entire series, or put another way, through two series (the one movie yet to be released notwithstanding) and that reason is simply that they are the dark side. The dark side is about everything bad in the world, evil, destruction, violence, hatred. Just as the Jedi strive to embody the opposites of these ideals, the Sith represent them. There is great power in the dark side, but of course the whole point of the movies is that good triumphs over evil because evil is focused on destruction or something like that. Maybe I kind of missed the point though, I thought I almost had it in the third movie, but then a bunch of muppets showed up, and then they put carrie fisher in a bronze bikini and I totally lost my train of thought.

sg3000 (87992) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791605)

> At no point have we seen any motivation for why the Sith are

My understanding is that Star Wars canon says that the Jedi wiped out the Sith 1000 years before TPM. There may have been something later than that, but Darth Maul did say in TPM, "At last we'll reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we'll have our revenge." Too bad for Darth Maul the actual revenge didn't happen until Episode III when Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader kills almost all the Jedi (presumably). Thus the "Revenge of the Sith" title. Good job to Lucas on the title, BTW.

I'm not even a fan boy and I know that the Sith were beaten back (read: killed) from dominance in the galaxy by the Jedi. One of the reasons for the whole one master, one apprentice, live in secrecy yada yada yada....

One master, one apprentice explained (1)

queenofthe1ring (768698) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791613)

Because there were so many Sith, all with agendas of evil and domination, they inevitably clashed. After a big fight amoung the Sith, they decided that they should go with one master and one apprentice to avoid the internal fighting so that they could focus on combating their real enemies, the Jedi order.

You are making the faulty assumption that Prequels and Sequels are a subset of Natural Numbers (I, II, III) when they are in fact a subset of Real Numbers. I Refer you to Lion King 1 1/2 [imdb.com] . This could mean that we'll be forced to endure a perpetual (infinite) series of Star Wars sequels and prequels. Imagine it now... Star Wars PI: Circle of Hatred. Oh, the horror, the horror. Jar Jar wages war upon the Ewoks to capture their stockpiles of collectible trading cards and plush dolls. Stop the madness!

the only worry is, what if lucas was lying when he said he was only going to make one more trilogy? We know that the outline for episodes 7-9 exists, and it only takes a small dent in his pocketbook before he decides it's time to go on another merchandising run...

The Old "Making of..." Documentaries (3, Interesting)

GuyMannDude (574364) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791492)

Jim Ward, Vice President of Marketing for Lucasfilm and Executive Producer of the DVDs spoke about the upcoming release, and announced that the epic feature-length documentary, Empire of Dreams: The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy, would appear as a special edited-for-television edition on the A&E network this fall.

Okay, so this question isn't exactly about Episode III. Bear with me, please.

Does anyone know if this 'Empire of Dreams' documentary is going to include all the stuff from the "Making of..." specials they showed on TV in the 80s? Even though I was a kid at the time, I thought those things were fascinating. And I think today, after being innundated with all those "Making of..." featurettes on DVD which just feature some pasty-faced geek typing away at a computer, watching how spfx were done before computers would really be exciting to see again.

Does anyone know if that stuff is going to be included? Or is this new documentary just going to be a bunch of interviews with cast and crew, reminiscing about the good old days? Something tells me that Lucas would be hard-pressed to let people see the "archaic" (read: non-computer) means they used for spfx in the original trilogy.

The special effects in the original were state of their art for their time, just as the effects in the prequel trilogy are theoretically state of the art for their time. (They really botched the compositing of several of their CG effects into episode I, hence the theoretically.)

As such, Lucas might get a giggle out of a "then and now" comparison. I know I would...

Why not "Rise of the Sith"? (1)

jkc120 (104731) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791493)

Since we're all wondering what "revenge" the Sith would be making in this film, why not "Rise of the Sith"? The title makes more sense than Revense of the Sith, and still has the implicit darkness about it. Oh well.

Exiler (589908) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791532)

Because there are no female Sith left, and they already did one about Clones. A race can't do any Rising if it can't reproduce.

FuzzyBad-Mofo (184327) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791619)

The Sith are not a race, they're an order like the Jedi. Darth Maul was just a freaky alien Sith lord, not representative of their entire makeup.

Insanity (5, Funny)

astrashe (7452) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791504)

They say that one definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different outcome.

But this new movie is going to be good. Really, it will. I have a very good feeling about it -- you can tell from the logo.

Lucas and his forced parallels (1)

Streiff (34269) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791506)

Lucas seams to be forcing the prequeals to be similar to the orginal movies. Too much so for my liking. After all, the title for Return of the Jedi was originally Revenge of the Jedi, but was changed later. There was even a trailer produced under that title.

not very interesting, but... (1)

K. (10774) | more than 10 years ago | (#9791510)

The original title of Episode VI was "Revenge of the Jedi", so a bit of symmetry there.

(Apparently some of the crew all got t-shirts with that title on them, which are worth decent money now.)

Why are they calling this the *final* star wars movie? I thought Lucas had originally planned nine stories? Did something change?
