I remain astonished that RealPlayer is still an internet standard. It's no easier to install than Divx or Xvid, requires you to have that stupid 24 gig player, and the quality is easily a step down from the big two. For god's sake, put Real out of its misery !

WHen talking about this trailer, I completely agree with you, no reason to use real format at all.

When talking about streaming video, the AVI file format is serious not suited for it (for once because of having the index at the end of the file and needing that index to navigate through the file, somethign which is not needed for either mpg or real formats.

I do not know about ogg, it might support this correctly and that'd allow using xvid for streaming.

The movie trailer doesn't reveal anything, but looks cool.

Reveal anything? Taco hasn't read the books? Or is this a different story?

Re:Wow, welcome to Friday. (2, Insightful)

I believe Taco meant that the trailer is more like a teaser, in that no actual footage from the movie is being shown.

What a choice: dive for FP or get the trailer before shashdotting. Neither! 15% and now estimated time of 44 minutes.

Re:I'll let you know in 23 minutes (1, Redundant)

elmegil (12001) | more than 9 years ago | (#9811059)

The AVI is downloading way faster than the real media. I clicked on both and it was 15 minutes vs. 15 hours.

The trailer itself is definitely just a teaser, shows off some nice but not terribly groundbreaking CGI. It'll build some hype among those who weren't aware it was coming. The logo's pretty cool, incorporating elements of earlier logos while still being new and different.

Re:I'll let you know in 23 minutes (1)

Scorchio (177053) | more than 9 years ago | (#9810835)

I know... I was hoping people would be distracted by the new poll, so went straight for saving the movie file. Started at abour 120k/s, finished around 27k/s. :)

As the article says, there's not much content beyond the exploding earth and "don't panic" message. Still, I'm a big hitch-hikers fan, and it gave me goosebumps. You can go stick your Star Wars prequel, I don't care anymore. I just hope they don't go and f%ck up this film!

That didn't give me a good feeling. Stylish, sure, but a bit lacking in substance. I hate the way they just stuck "42" in the corner without any reason. It's like they thought they'd just chuck it in for "geek cred", even though it makes no sense. I hope the whole film isn't like that; lots of style, no substance, and the occasional thing that doesn't really makes sense, but attempts to make fans feel clever for noticing it.

Imagination (5, Insightful)

Kralizec (627733) | more than 9 years ago | (#9810710)

The Hitchhiker story is so bizarre that I always found my imagination made the books much funnier than the radio drama and the TV show. I'm not sure how excited I am about the movie, since live action just can't seem to match the absurdities that the imagination seems to be able to grasp so well.

What I have done is listen to the Audio Books"> read by Douglas Adams himself. [amazon.co.uk]
It gives you that much extra, because you hear what the author wants you to hear, instead of only the text.
It still leaves enough to the imagination.

What I did was ript it, so I had 5 CD's in my car, instead of the 25 and then listen to the mp3's. What else are you going to do when waiting in traffic?
Note that the prices are in UK money.

Re:Imagination (2, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#9810965)

I heard the radio series before the book was available. My whole schedule was twisted and warped so that I wouldn't miss a single minute. It was awesome. I also enjoyed the books. The TV show, on the other hand, was seriously lame.

Radio leaves plenty of room for imagination.

It isn't a given that any story will work better in any given medium. For instance Star Wars, the movie, totally blew me away when I first saw it. I'm not even remotely interested in reading the book.

Although, while I don't know for myself, I have heard that the Star Wars radio drama was phenomenal. Haven't had a chance to check it out myself, unfortunately.

Alranor (472986) | more than 9 years ago | (#9810725)

Here [bbc.co.uk]

The original cast (unfortunately without the late Peter Jones), a cameo by Douglas Adams himself ..

And for those of you who aren't in the UK, you may appreciate knowing that Radio 4 make their programs available on their website [bbc.co.uk] for a week after the broadcast.

Unfortunately they're still in crappy real media format, but mplayer [mplayerhq.hu] deals with them fine.

About time too :) - i've been looking forward to these for a long time, they were originally due to begin airing in February of this year but some licensing issues with the movie delayed that.

It occurs to me, that when those "authenticity" geeks who go to movies to point out continuity flaws (like the spiderman article here on /. a few weeks ago) see this movie, their heads will explode.

I can just see them feverishly scribbling into their zaurus': "Continuity Error #123231254: Shot clearly shows ICBMS, next shot they appear to be a bowl of petunias and a whale." "Error #1534534534: Ford turns into a penguin.", etc..

"Sure!"
"Pick a number, any number"
"Uuummmmm 12?"
"Wrong. See?"

Torrents? (1)

stratjakt (596332) | more than 9 years ago | (#9810876)

I really want to see how they pull this off. I've been rereading the books lately, I'm just partway into "So Long" now. Never read Mostly Harmless or "Young Zaphod plays it Safe" before, so that'll be fun.

I just read the part where Ford sits waiting for the Guide to be updated, and it says something about him waiting for 15 years of his work-life to dissappear into the ether. I couldn't help thinking of todays .com cyber-employees, and the parallel. Perhaps it was somewhat prophetic, perhaps it's just exactly improbable enough.

Offtopic, I went to Borders and bought the "leather" bound "Complete Hitchhikers Guide". It's got all the books in one, seemed like a deal to me. I noticed on the spine of this tome, it lists this "Young Zaphoid Plays it Safe".

Zaphoid! How does a typo like that pass the publisher? The story is spelled wrong on the spine of the book.

Anyhow, movie or not, encourage people to read the books. There's so much wit and puns and wordplay that just couldn't translate onto the screen.

Re:Torrents? (1)

StalinsNotDead (764374) | more than 9 years ago | (#9811082)

From personal experience at least, reading the book just before seeing the movie makes the movie seem much worse about 85% of the time.

Keep that book though, typographical errors in published works can mean a collectible value in the future.

This might qualify as redundant, but I was worried the others might get /.ed to heck, too.

Radio series and books were quite divergent ... (1)

The second radio series was quite different than the books, and was better in my opinion (perhaps because I heard it before I read the books).

The end of the second radio series had Arthur taking off in the Heart of Gold after discovering Zaphod's part in the destruction of Earth, leaving Ford and Zaphod stranded with the ruler of the universe, and Trillian had disappeared near the end of the first series (forcibly married to the Algolian Chapter of the Galactic Rotary Club, from memory).

The end of the second book had Arthur and Ford still stranded on prehistoric Earth (where they had been at the end of the first radio series).

I'm hoping that the third radio series will continue from where the second radio series left off, and not just follow the books.

I don't hold much hope for the movie ... the TV series was pretty awful.

Less popular than 53 more things to do in zero G. (1)

I heard it on the radio,
read it in the book,
saw it on stage at the Rainbow,
cringed at the TV series,
played the records,
read the book of radio scripts.
I've eaten the soup and worn the T-shirt.

The original material, particularly the books was funny. It still is funny. I think I've read the first book 20 times and laughed every time, but in slightly different places. Listening to the radio series with those amazing radiophonic-workshop effects makes any visual representation redundant so I can't understand what us old-timers will get from the film. Either it will be the original, but watered down to fit the film length, or it will be new, not DNA, but with a few in-jokes.

I think the film must be targeted at a new audience. They've heard this theory about 42 being the answer but never been exposed to the original joke. 42 is there to whet their appetites, not mine.

So I can't say I have been waiting 24 years to see it on the big screen. I'll wait until it arrives on a small one in my living-room. Can it be worse than "Mostly Harmless"?

So several years ago when I was several feet shorter I spent all my money on the box set of the tapes of the original series and both tapes were there and they had a little cardboard box with the primary cover on the front and secondary on the back. Now what am I supposed to do with it? Make a little pyramid out of it? If it wasn't for the fact Im getting something great from the BBC I would be pissed that my cardboard carton is now totally useless.

avi audio only? (1)

I'm only getting the audio from the avi. Am I missing a codec? If so, which one?
