An anonymous reader writes "What's next for the maker of Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein? Chris Morris of CNN Money talks to id's CEO, who tells us the next id game won't be anything like the others. Rather than a re-hash of its sci-fi or WWII themes, CEO Todd Hollenshead says, 'I'd like to try something new.' [Hollenshead also notes that an as yet unidentified developer with 'a name that people recognize' has licensed the Doom 3 engine.]"

I wouldn't be suprised if it was. And after they get the Doom 3 engine they'll switch to the HL2 engine when it's released. Of course, they'll spend a few months of development time discussing whether they should wait for the next Unreal engine. Then bam! In 2040, after Epic goes under and id is bought out by ValuSoft, the world is blessed with Duke Nukem Forever (as a hidden game on a Midway Classics compilation disk for the Phantom 12.4.34.

Can't remember where exactly I RTFA, but I heard that the next big project will be an entirely new title. They've seemed to master and own the FPS show, perhaps they'll step foot into a new genre, a la' Blizzard and Warcraft 3?

From the same 'i can't rememeber where i read it' archive you are using, i seem to remember that their next project still will be an FPS (or at least a game using the mechanics of such a game) ;

I don't think they could totally step away from what made , and still makes, them big ; and there is still enough exploring to do in future games.
[offnote] i wish they had done more so with Doom 3 though ; gameplaywise [/offnote]

You mean like, gray? Or black, if you consider that a color. Those 3 colors make up 80% of Doom 3's color palette I imagine...

3D Realms? (5, Insightful)

NotAnotherReboot (262125) | about 10 years ago | (#9963230)

Who wants to bet that it is 3D Realms [3drealms.com] that is the unnamed licencesee? DNF has been in development for so long that I'm sure the engine has been scrapped multiple times. The Doom 3 engine should provide plenty of headroom, and I'm assuming that all of their content has been being made at high resolution anyways.

Makse sense to me...

Re:3D Realms? (3, Funny)

Shadow Wrought (586631) | about 10 years ago | (#9963342)

I would assume that since doing something along those lines would actually lead to the completion of DNF, that it will not happen;-)

Re:3D Realms? (1)

88NoSoup4U88 (721233) | about 10 years ago | (#9963435)

Currently it was being done for the , i think, Unreal Tourney engine ; Making a switch to the Doom 3 engine will lose alot of functionality of those allready made assets... Then again, 3D Reals seems to be quite good in shifting engines :D

What's weird is that they've already made the movie and released it...years ago.

It was called "Event Horizon".

I don't know why they didn't use the Doom name. Maybe it would've helped ticket sales.

Bullshit. (1)

Ayanami Rei (621112) | about 10 years ago | (#9963447)

GNAA Announces acquisition of SCO
By Tim Copperfield
New York, NY - GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) today announced acquisition of The SCO Group [yahoo.com] for $26.9 million in stock and $40 million in gay niggers.

GNAA today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the intellectual property and technology assets of The SCO Group, a leading provider of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt, based in Lindon, Utah. GNAA's acquisition of SCO technology will help GNAA sign up more members worldwide. In addition to developing new solutions, GNAA will use SCO engineering expertise and technology to enhance the GNAA member services.

"I'd love to see these GNAA types slowly consumed by millions of swarming microbes and converted into harmless and useful biochemicals." said an anonymous slashdot poster, blinded by the GNAA success in achieving first post on a popular geek news website, slashdot.org [slashdot.org] .

"This GNAA shit is getting out of hand. Slashdot needs troll filters. Or better yet a crap flood mod that I can exclude from my browsing. Seriously, a good troll is art, what you dumb fucks are doing is just plain stupid." said spacecowboy420.

macewan, on linuxquestions [linuxquestions.org] said "Thanks for that link to the SCO quotes page. My guess is that they want to be bought out. Hrm, think they want GNAA to buy them??"

After careful consideration and debate, GNAA board of directors agreed to purchase 6,426,600 preferred shares and 113,102 common shares (the equivalent of 150,803 ADSs) of SCO, for an aggregate consideration of approximately US$26.9 million and approximately $40 million for gay niggers that were working in Lindon, Utah offices of The SCO Group.

If all goes well, the final decision is to be expected shortly, followed by transfer of most SCO niggers from their Lindon, UT offices to the GNAA Headquarters in New York.

The PDA & the mission objective's in D3 had a semi RPG feel to them.

Yea, that got boring after about an hour. Go here, get this guy, oh shit, demons, come back to base, base is f*cked up, go to the new base, blah blah. Thankfully that left cheats in so I could just enable god mode and give myself all the weapons so I could do what I really wanted and blow off some steam blowing shit up. It's kind of a pain finding the PDAs that have access so you can open doors, but that's why God invented noclip mode. Yes, I cheat in single player mode.. I don't care.

Life After Doom? (5, Funny)

scifience (674659) | about 10 years ago | (#9963246)

To be completely correct, there would be no "life after doom."

doom n.
1. Inevitable destruction or ruin.
2. Fate, especially a tragic or ruinous one.
3. A decision or judgment, especially an official condemnation to a severe penalty.
4. Judgment Day.
5. A statute or ordinance, especially one in force in Anglo-Saxon England.

Maybe "Quest"? (4, Interesting)

th1ckasabr1ck (752151) | about 10 years ago | (#9963270)

I know id had begun working on a medieval style game called Quest when Carmack decided he wanted to do DOOM3 and they switched gears.

Maybe they'll give that another shot.

88NoSoup4U88 (721233) | about 10 years ago | (#9963475)

IIRC, the original Quake was meant to be a mix between RPG and FPS, but stuck with the FPS-only in the end ;

Btw, where did you hear about this 'Quest' : I haven't heard of it before.

Did the article get updated, or am I missing something:

Hollenshead also notes that an as yet unidentified developer with 'a name that people recognize' has licensed the Doom 3 engine.

From the article:

Raven Software has licensed the engine for the still-under-wraps "Quake 4".

Re:Mystery solved? (1)

th1ckasabr1ck (752151) | about 10 years ago | (#9963311)

That wasn't the mystery. It has been known that Raven is doing Quake 4 for some time now.

Re:Mystery solved? (4, Informative)

BlueCup (753410) | about 10 years ago | (#9963326)

I think those are two seperate statements... like Raven Software has licensed the software and an as yet unidentified developer.

Re:Mystery solved? (1)

Koushiro (612241) | about 10 years ago | (#9963339)

Raven's licensing deal for Quake 4 has been around for quite some time [gamespy.com] .

This "unidentified developer" is something completely different, but I have a sneaking suspicion we can expect something pretty awesome appearing on the radar in the next five months or so...

Raven Software has licensed the engine for the still-under-wraps "Quake 4". And an as-yet unidentified developer will use it for a forthcoming game.

Bet you it's HL2 that grew tired of writing their own, so they bought this one.

On a more serious note: now that Doom3 is out, have everyone forgotten compleatly about HalfLife2?

Uuuummm.. No.. In fact half of the reviews for doom3 that I see say "This game sucks. Fuckin dark, tape flashlight to gun.. bullshit.. don't buy it, wait for HL2 and buy that instead.. grumble grumble."

harumscarum (675595) | about 10 years ago | (#9963288)

That is just crazy talk. There are some great games but hollywood and corps have gotten too involved. It is all about branding and not about creativity. I am only a disgruntled game because I saw this today:

Have they no mercy?

Not such a bad idea (1)

akintayo (17599) | about 10 years ago | (#9963356)

A hyper realistic fighting game seems like a good idea to me. I'll concede that the movie "Fight Club" is not an appropriate jumping off point - there was no killing.

Trinity? (4, Informative)

mfh (56) | about 10 years ago | (#9963297)

JC hinted that this was the case in one of his recent comments on /. [slashdot.org] and I think that we may see the Trinity game they were looking at doing after Quake 2. That would totally rock!

Re:Trinity? (1)

88NoSoup4U88 (721233) | about 10 years ago | (#9963492)

Wasn't Trinity done by another studio (which the name eludes me for now : Been a busy day ;) ).

I haven't heard something of that Trinity game (last seen footage of it in the q3 engine) for a year or so : What happened with it ?

Off topic ; How's the D3 Blooper Mod coming along ?

Life Imitates Art... (2, Insightful)

th1ckasabr1ck (752151) | about 10 years ago | (#9963337)

In DOOM3 you find a PDA with an e-mail from a little boy to his uncle talking about how great his new birthday present, "Quake 43" is.

I guess id wants to generate some new IP so that life does not imitate art.

The lineup (1)

Neo's Nemesis (679728) | about 10 years ago | (#9963344)

First would surely come Quake IV in little time.
After that comes RTCW: reloaded.

After that I think Carmack and team have picked up the idea of some other genre. Because they have used Doom so so much that its originality would have been corroded by end of DoomIII phenomenon, hence no DoomIV expected by me.

I think they'll continue the Quake series tho, and alongside release other games, but in major partnerships with companies. But then would there be any changes in the id because of that??

MMORPG (1)

Hepkat (78639) | about 10 years ago | (#9963366)

I'm surprise no one has mentioned this yet... or maybe they did and I didn't read it... likely the later...
Anyway, since they 0wn FPS, and they're in the horror/action genre as he says, what about a more action filled MMORPG? Those seem to be pulling in pretty decent returns lately...

American McGee (5, Interesting)

oZZoZZ (627043) | about 10 years ago | (#9963376)

I remember a few years back, American McGee was invited to check out the new Doom 3 engine, and he had great things to say about the lighting. (this was only a few months after Quake 3 shipped). It wouldn't surprise me if he's the licencee, in fact, since he worked at id, and used q3a engine for Alice, it would surprise me if he WASN'T the licencee.

Re:American McGee (1)

ziggy_zero (462010) | about 10 years ago | (#9963456)

You know, Quake was originally conceived as an RPG called "The Quest for Justice." It, uh, didn't quite pan out that way.

I'm sure they have every intention of starting something new and exciting, and will end up creating another, prettier, first-person shooter.

Maybe you'll be a pirate. That'd be pretty innovative.
