AAHelper, Library for ASCII Games/Apps Released 11

Ravalox writes "AA Helper Library, which is a set of libraries to assist in the development of AA-Lib games/applications, has made its initial release. It currently provides a few graphics primitives and a render-to-frame function so you can get a normal image out of AA-Lib. If like me you are an ascii video fan another helpful ascii library is libcaca which is currently supported in Video Lan Media Player and Mplayer."

For those who created real ASCII art back in the days of the BBS, there exists a GPL clone of TheDraw to bring back memories (and maybe dust your 5.25" floppies) called DuhDraw [helsinki.fi]. Those were the good old times, as anybody remembering ANSI music will tell.

Oh wait.. It was in '80s. But still good to know they made such great progress - gonna change the whole gaming industry.
  • If you can get the console resolution high enough, and utilize extended character encodings, and sit, just back from your computer a little ways, the quality of the aa video vs. an actual video isn't that bad. Which means that if you end up doing games in console, with a hi-res framebuffer, you could actually have some games that may contend with opengl. Who knows, but it looks promising.
