Swedish Defense Industry Licenses Game Engine

Zonk posted about 10 years ago | from the gaming-goes-commando dept.

Games 22

Z00L00K writes "The Swedish defense industry has licensed the engine from Battlefield 2 by Digital Illusions for 4MSEK (about US $540,000). The engine will be used to develop training simulators for defense, and support of new command methods in the defense."

Not to rag on Sweden, they have some fine looking women, good chocolate, and make a helluva meatball, but what are they preparing to defend against?

Uhm, what about that gigantic monstrosity of a neighbor, Russia?

Re:Swedish Defense? (1, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 years ago | (#10397635)

Actually Sweden and Russia aren't really neighbours at all. There's this little country called Finland between them (and in the north both Finland and Norway)

Actually when there is only a short boat-trip across the Baltic Ocean, I think it is safe to say that they are neighbors.

A neighbour is someone who lives in your neighbourhood. Not someone immediately adjacent to you.

The US Army?

The military's only function is keeping dangerous people off the streets, if they have more toys to play with they are more likely to stay.

Well it appears that Sweden is going to cut down/restructure the defense to counter terrorism and provide their part to the new EU army. At least that is my interpretation of the new defence proposition. And I think you have the chocolate confused with Switzerland (though i think Belgium is the new chocolate county of Europe). It was only a couple of years ago that Swedish chocolate was not allowed to be called chocolate in the EU because of the low cocoa percentage.

To defend against invaders coming for the women, chocolate, and meatballs.

Duh.

That would be fat lazy American vegetarians on a non-chocolate diet..

Re:Swedish Defense? (2, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 years ago | (#10398322)

The short story is that Sweden is not, and has never been, a member of NATO or any other pact. This has meant a few things:

1. They need a big whopping army, since they don't have any pact countries to rely on.

2. Since they're not in a pact, their army needs no offensive capability. It is purely geared for defence.

3. Since they're not in a pact, they've managed to avoid getting dragged into a war for nearly 200 years.

Traditionally their biggest worry was the USSR. Nowadays it mostly seems to be figuring out what to do with their army :-)

Defend against? A few scenarios for you...

Iran starts lobbing nukes at EU countries.

China takes Russia, and then there is another belligerent superpower on Sweden's doorstep.

Or perhaps most realistically... Russia itself turns nasty again.

You are right to comment that all of these scenarios are more than a decade away right now. That is why the Swedish military is smart to do what they are doing: They are basically throwing away most of the technologies in their current inventory, and using the next few years to develop and test really cutting-edge stuff. The thinking is, there is no point in wasting money to support the current generation of equipment, since it is vanishingly unlikely to be needed during its lifetime anyway. Makes pretty good economic sense.

So I have heard, anyway.

yes. You do it by pouring Belgian chocolate on the Swedish women.

lan party, military style! (1)

lublu (728626) | about 10 years ago | (#10399815)

I for one am going to wait for the first lan party, er lan war between Us Army and Swedish military. I wonder which is going to be better American Army or Battelfield 1942.

Real war is so old school and out of date anyways.

I've just had an idea - fraggin defence contractor!

And if you are going that far, mind as well build the real matrix.

The Islamic Fundamen (728413) | about 10 years ago | (#10401075)

But really, think of the physics realism. Wing riding? The ability to jump out of a helicopter, then land on the plane below it using your parachute? Using your parachute to come back to earth after being blown sky high by an exploding tank? The engine will have to go under some serious revision. And when did Sweden have an army?
