The important Slashdot question (3, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10674454)

Anyone got pictures?

Re:The important Slashdot question (1, Informative)

Here's one [nyu.edu] . Oh yeah!

Re:The important Slashdot question (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10674465)

she looks a lot better in the world changing site where her face is covered in photoshop mist...

Re:The important Slashdot question (-1, Offtopic)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10674552)

She still looks pretty damn hot to me, but I prefer my women to look like flesh and blood women, not barbie dolls (or seeing as this is /. - hentai anime characters).

Re:The important Slashdot question (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10674635)

Addendum: While I think she is very attractive (triply so because she is also clearly at least as intelligent as me and somewhat similar in political viewpoint to me), she also apparently has a child (actually pictured breastfeeding in another image on that site).

That instantly prevents me picturing her as a long-term mate, even if I can appreciate her aesthetically.

I'm a guy. I suck :-(.

It might takes years of therapy... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10674642)

... but I'm sure she'll eventually get over you.

Re:It might takes years of therapy... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10674869)

It was more an expression of existential guy-angst than intend to suggest I would in any way, shape or form have a chance with her.

Re:The important Slashdot question (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10674694)

triply so because she is also clearly at least as intelligent

Wow you have a high opinion of yourself. That's a pretty huge insult you just tossed at her. She's so much smarter than you, you may as well be a lower primate.

Also she's very hot.

Re:The important Slashdot question (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10674738)

Which part of "at least as" do you need help with? "At"? "Least"? Tell me when, lemur-boy!

Re:The important Slashdot question (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10674816)

Is saying "you're at least as intelligent as an ant" a compliment to you? Well for you it might be, but for a human of normal intelligence, it's an insult.

Re:The important Slashdot question (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10674847)

That's because humans of normal intelligence are stupid. "at least as intelligent as an ant" would be roughly just a statement of fact (though I hold that "intelligence" is ill-defined). I certainly wouldn't be insulted by someone stating it about me. I might be insulted by their thinking I might take it as an insult, though I probably wouldn't give a fuck either way, I'm like that.

Re:The important Slashdot question (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10675044)

Since we're comparing humans, I fail to see your 'point'.

Re:The important Slashdot question (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10675143)

That's because you're stupid.

Huh? (1)

StarKruzr (74642) | more than 9 years ago | (#10677860)

Do you have some kind of problem with kids, and ascribe that merely to being male?

Anyway, back on topic:

"For instance, I put a camera in Fresh Kills landfill, just a little networked web cam. It went on whenever the background radiation flipped above the so-called safe level.

What was interesting was that Staten Island has a hospital on it, which was also measuring environmental radiation. Medical facilities are required to do that. So they had their dosimeter, I had my dosimeter. We're both gathering the same data and it's not that different.

But mine's triggering a web cam. So instead of presenting me with information so that it looks like science, like a little graph, it's clips. Every time the background radiation fluctuates above a certain level, you get two seconds of video.

When you look at that, you start to see things you were not looking for. Seagulls are always going past when this is being triggered. Something happens at sundown, there's a truck going past. That becomes interesting.

This issue of radioactive seagulls--there's only one other paper on it. I wasn't looking for radioactive seagulls. I had no idea about radioactive seagulls, or the concentration of radioactive diets that go on within the gullet of a seagull. It has actually been partially documented by some Greenpeace science groups in England, in Sellafield. But there are no publications on it here."

I just wanted to point this out because I think it's easy to gloss over. I LIVE on Staten Island and I haven't heard ANYTHING about this. What does the possibility of radioactive seagulls suggest to us? They sure as hell aren't eating granite. Where is the closest nuclear reactor to New York City - or is there a poorly-shielded nuclear weapons facility that we don't know about?

This, not to put too fine a point on it, is scary shit to me.

Re:Huh? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10678112)

Do you have some kind of problem with kids, and ascribe that merely to being male?

It does not make much sense from an evolutionary standpoint to support another man's children in most cases, and the thought of supporting someone else's screaming brat just turns me, and most men, right off.

Lions in the wild will slaughter other male's cubs after taking over a pride. Single mothers can't get dates because society won't let us kill the cubs...

Um... (1)

StarKruzr (74642) | more than 9 years ago | (#10680708)

I'm a self-aware, thinking creature. Evolutionary standpoints do not matter one whit to me.

Kids are kids. At what stage in their life you meet them (birth, or afterward) or whose DNA they happen to contain really doesn't make much of a difference if you're interesting in ultimately forming a family with someone.

I was going to mod this funny because I thought you had just posted a picture of a guy who looked like a girl.

You know, this is where Orwell went way wrong (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10674601)

He thought that Big Brother would gain power by forbidding sex to its citizens, via the JASL. Instead, our own shard of the brave new world keeps us all Soma-fied with porn sites. When Winston Smith turns out to be a hot professor babe, we don't hear her message -- all we here are choruses of "I'd hit it!"

That being said, Christ, would I hit that. :-P

C'mon. You COULD have used this picture [nyu.edu] , or (by popular demand) this picture [nyu.edu] (somewhat NWS in today's "politically correct" world, but it doesn't actually show anything).

Here we have a story about a brilliant young woman and and the first thing you do is ask for pictures of her? Maybe asking for pictures of her is your first instinct, but it is not mine. Mine was to do a Google image search...

This is Slashdot, not Fark. She's not just a "woman". She's not just a "brilliant young woman". She's got a name. Natalie.

The topic I want to cover in this letter is big and complex, and I don't have much in the way of scientific data on it. Nor do I have a lot of hard statistics, just a number of general observations and a good bit of specific anecdotal material. First, the misinformation: Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots suggests that an open party with unlimited access to alcohol can't possibly outgrow the host's ability to manage the crowd. Where the heck did he come up with that? You know the answer, don't you? You probably also know that this is explicitly or implicitly expressed or presupposed in most of the material I plan to present. To top that off, he likes to imply that he has mystical powers of divination and prophecy. This is what his ideals amount to, although, of course, they're daubed over with the viscid slobber of deluded drivel devised by his functionaries and mindlessly multiplied by unpleasant spoiled brats. We all have an obligation to stand up together and forcefully oppose his blasphemous platitudes. Surely, he is not too petty to realize that. A trip to your local library would reveal that if you've read any of the mudslinging slop that Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots has concocted, you'll undoubtedly recall Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots's description of his plan to assail all that is holy. If you haven't read any of it, well, all you really need to know is that the passage of time will make it clear to even the more slow among us that Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots's jokes are pockmarked with lackadaisical egotism and other assorted ills. And that's why I'm writing this letter; this is my manifesto, if you will, on how to discuss the advantages of two-parent families, the essential role of individual and family responsibility, the need for uniform standards of civil behavior, and the primacy of the work ethic. There's no way I can do that alone, and there's no way I can do it without first stating that there is something grievously wrong with those rabid nobodies who demand that loyalty to empty-headed hermits supersedes personal loyalty. Shame on the lot of them! It would be wrong to imply that Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots is involved in some kind of conspiracy to appropriate sacred symbols for lecherous purposes. It would be wrong because his announcements are far beyond the conspiracy stage. Not only that, but his comrades are too lazy to set the record straight. They just want to sit back, fasten their mouths on the public teats, and casually forget that when people say that bigotry and hate are alive and well, they're right. And Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots is to blame. Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots, you are welcome to get off my back this time and stay off. Note that he is a myth-generating machine. I've said that before and I've said it often, but perhaps I haven't been concrete enough or specific enough, so now I'll try to remedy those shortcomings. I'll try to be a lot more specific and concrete when I explain that he insists that courtesy and manners don't count for anything. Sorry, Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots, but, with apologies to Gershwin, "it ain't necessarily so." Look at what's happened since he first ordered his secret police to devastate vast acres of precious farmland: Views once considered appalling are now considered ordinary. Views once considered doctrinaire are now considered perfectly normal. And the most twisted of Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots's views are now seen as gospel by legions of slatternly pseudo-intellectuals. If you don't think that Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots prefers defamation to dialogue, then think again. This is abject McCarthyism! Moreover, we must remove our chains and move towards the light. (In case you didn't understand that analogy, the chains symbolize Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots's lousy notions, and the light represents the goal of getting all of us to act honorably.) Just to add a little more perspective, Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots's ruses have merged with animalism in several interesting ways. Both spring from the same kind of reality-denying mentality. Both reinforce the impression that rude, pernicious lounge lizards -- as opposed to Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots's helots -- are striving to eavesdrop on all sorts of private conversations. And both treat anyone who doesn't agree with him to a torrent of vitriol and vilification. All the same, Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots just keeps on saying, "I don't give a [expletive deleted] about you. I just want to supplant national heroes with stubborn dipsomaniacs." Many people respond to his homophobic theories in much the same way that they respond to television dramas. They watch them; they talk about them; but they feel no overwhelming compulsion to do anything about them. That's why I insist we build a society in which people have a sense of permanence and stability, not chaos and uncertainty. "What's that?", I hear you ask. "Is it true that Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots has deported himself as an enemy of peace and harmony?" Why, yes, it is. Just because he and his votaries don't like being labelled as "inconsiderate, inane poltroons" or "pestiferous hatemongers" doesn't mean the shoe doesn't fit. I alluded to this earlier, but there is no honor in his biases. Period, finis, and Q.E.D. Next time, Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots, you may want to check your facts correctly. Most of us who have been around for a while realize that prudence is no vice. Cowardice -- especially his morally repugnant form of it -- is. It certainly shouldn't be necessary to have to say such things, but he insists that he is a paragon of morality and wisdom. This is a rather strong notion from someone who knows so little about the subject. Of course, exhibitionism is arguably the most frightening and devastating problem facing us all. I say "of course," because at no time in the past did the worst classes of apolaustic gutter-dwellers there are shamble through the streets of cities, demanding rights they imagine some supernatural power has bestowed upon them. To quote the prophet Isaiah, "Woe to ye who let scummy rapscallions serve as our overlords". Is there anyone else out there who's noticed that I become impatient with people who refuse to recognize the key role that Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots is playing in the destruction of our civilization? I ask because I, for one, unmistakably hope that the truth will prevail and that justice will be served before Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots does any real damage. Or is it already too late? After days of agonized pondering and reflection, I finally came to the conclusion that if stated outright, Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots's publicity stunts would be manifestly unpopular. But there's the rub; almost every day, Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots outreaches himself in setting new records for arrogance, deceit, and greed. It's indisputably breathtaking to watch him. The poisonous wine of classism had been distilled long before Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots entered the scene. Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots is merely the agent decanting the poisonous fluid from its bottle into the jug that is world humanity. At the risk of sounding hopelessly moonstruck, he may work both sides of the political fence right after he reads this letter. Let him. By next weekend, I will convince the government to clamp down hard on Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots's jeremiads. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it true that there are deeper issues afoot here? That fact is simply inescapable to any thinking man or woman. "Thinking" is the key word in the previous sentence. Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots may be reasonably cunning with words. However, he is thoroughly unprincipled with everything else. Like other surly dweebs, he has a finely honed ability to make today's oppressiveness look like grade-school work compared to what he has planned for the future. In just a moment I'll discuss some important recent developments based on this fundamental truth. First, however, I want to add a bit to what I wrote previously. He argues that I am destructive for wanting to speak up and speak out against him. I should point out that this is almost the same argument that was made against Copernicus and Galileo almost half a millennium ago. When you tell Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots's confreres that Slashdotting mohterfuckin faggots and several groups of abusive undesirables are in cahoots to make us all miserable, they begin to get fidgety, and their eyes begin to wander. They really don't care. They have no interest in hearing that he claims that the best way to serve one's country is to make life less pleasant for us. Predictably, he cites no hard data for that claim. This is because no such data exist. And that's what writing this sort of letter is all about. It's a way to oppose our human vices wherever they may be found -- arrogance, hatred, jealousy, unfaithfulness, avarice, and so on.

The strange surreality of the interview seemed more like a step towards the dystopia depicted in the classic '80s graphic novel to me: Attractive blonde rebel girl, radioactive seagulls, depressed rodents in the walls, Hoop? riots and weird techno weapons (no zenades though) - reminded me a little of the book by Alan Moore; "The Ballad of Halo Jones", but it was the mention of her feral robotic dogs [2000adonline.com] that really clinched it.

Doing the right thing so often means fighting the power... Sometimes, leading is leaving. Or pissing off. If you do what everyone wants you to do, you will have no real influence on the world whatsoever.

Fluidic Binary (554336) | more than 9 years ago | (#10674561)

reading articles such as this always make me feel better about the world. I am already well aware of the misfortunes of it, but it is truly inspirational to read about someone fighting for what they believe in such as 'NJ' is.

It is one thing to read about the various 'rebel without a cause' types who merely want their voice heard, but to read the words of an educated person who is using that education to attempt to make the world a better place is imo the realization of an ideal in a otherwise rather compromised world.

I had no idea this woman existed before now (perhaps I am not all that well read) and knowing she even exists inspires me to press onward and continue.

I wish her the best of luck in this battle and hope to aid the cause some day soon.

Of course, I will have to begin researching more about her to ensure that I am not a complete moron by making the former statements... But at far as I can tell presently she is an awesome human being.

Re:i'm so glad i caught THIS article (1, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10674906)

You know, for me it is just the opposite. Reading this article doesn't make me feel better about the world.

I mean, is this worldchanging biotechnohobbyist a really a renaissance genius, or just a jack of all trades and master of none (well, perhaps masteroftechnobullshit). Look at the publication list on her c.v. - hardly anything technically deep, with rather random unconnected topics. Things like growing walnut tree clones for the next 50 years, the innovation being that there's going to be a website to keep track of it. It sounds like she's someone who can't maintain focus, who gets bored with one thing and moves to the next. Aargh! I'm sorry, there's just something about it that rubs me the wrong way. In fact it makes me want to scream and pull my hair out, and I just can't pin down the reason why.

Am I the only one who has this reaction to her?

That's a really mature answer. The fact that a criticism is delivered by someone who may not have "done" anything, is still a valid criticism if it contains good solid facts. Maybe you're not old enough or have enough experience with academia yet, but her CV is weak and shows no depth in any subject.

It's precisely people like you who cannot see through this person's self-promotion that make any activist initiative easily disregarded by the Establishment.

Re:i'm so glad i caught THIS article (1, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10675146)

Yes, she is fighting for what she believes in, and that's all noble and good, but having met her on several occasions and being familiar with some of her research projects, the reality of it all is that she's very, very good at self-promotion, and very, very bad at actually doing anything of real value.

Sure, feral robot dogs, great. But the actual idea is simply using comodity components to lower costs for a technical project. The dogs themselves are woefully inadequate, the 'programming' and 'sensors' were ridiculously primitive, and her entire approach to the field relies solely on ideas rather than a fusion of ideas, knowledge and hard work.

She has also apparently misrepresented her qualifications in the past, and as another poster pointed out, often has very short appointments in places due to her quirks. Hopefully, for her sake, she'll learn to rely on her presumably real gifts and strengths other than mere self-promotion.

It's a bit like people who talk about Steve Jobs as being the most brilliant computer genius because he single-handedly (as some think) created Apple and all of it's inventions.

But don't take my word for it, go listen to her talk sometime, or audit a class of hers, and judge for yourself. In my mind, we can find better role models!

yeah, right... (1)

alizard (107678) | more than 9 years ago | (#10696210)

and that's why you're posting as anonymous coward.

So you don't have to live with people looking into your qualifications, if any, to evaluate her work.

I'm simply writing you off as somebody who had a class with her as a teacher who she flunked for good reason.

demachina (71715) | more than 9 years ago | (#10675592)

I wouldn't give her long at Yale once the powers that be get wind of some of her rhetoric. Most interesting question I'd like to hear her answer is why in God's name she took a position at Yale other than maybe she wants to live in NYC.

She would fit at Berkeley or maybe even Stanford but Yale and Connecticut is the belly of the beast (the beast being the establishment). Yale is the ivy league school for future Wall Street power brokers thanks to its proximity to New York. Its home to Skull and Bones, the secret Yale fraternity whose 800 living members include both current Presidential candidates. Connecticut and Yale were the center of the Bush family's power base before they moved to Texas, Prescott Bush, George W's grandpa was their senator.

A short list of some Yale Alumni:

- Prescott Bush, George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, Barbara Bush
- John Kerry
- Joe Lieberman
- Howard Dean
- Dick Cheney though he dropped out before he flunked out

I'm guessing her strategy must be to get inside the cocoon and see if she can corrupt the minds of the future Wall Street power brokers and American presidents while they are still young and malleable.

Biotechhobbyist is right along the lines of a PostNuke forum I set up a few years ago and have been slowly updating. I'm so pleased to see more of this sort of thing.
I strongly believe that biotech is the logical next place for the DIY revolution or the hacker approach to innovation or whatever you want to call it and that a key to getting there is for people to digest the journal articles and make it doable for people at home.
This is such a hot area for the DIY enthusiast because its an intersection of so many skills that are already honed by being a computer geek.
I'm quite impressed and I can't wait to see more.
Interesting that Biotechhobbyist seems to be from UCSD. I've covered a really cool story coming out of the same campus called the Discode project which calls itself an open-source biotech hardware project. It uses CD-ROMs and inkjet printers to enable DIY molecular interaction screening. Amazing stuff.
I hear they're still looking for Linux kernel hackers with good understading of CD-ROM drivers. If you're in San Diego and you're a CD hacker, you should check out the project.

Pet supply stores! Awesome. (2, Informative)

ahfoo (223186) | more than 9 years ago | (#10674811)

See, this is what I'm talking about. I hadn't even thought of going to a pet supply store to look for cell culture incubators. This stuff is still so ground level for the home market. Sharing these sorts of tips is invaluable.
Of course what's more intriguing is doing the elctronics to make your own, but knowing where to get stuff that is easily adaptable is good too. Sometimes it's good to improvise completely from scratch, sometimes it's better to take something that gets you halfway there.
For kitchen cultures like yogurt and sourdough I've used a variety of incubators from rice cookers and crock pots to all sorts of lamps. While the DIY lamp jobs are more fun and impressive looking, the crock pots are easier to clean which is an important issue once you get beyond the first experiments.
I really recommend sourdough to anybody. It's so simple and even if you skip the bread and just make pancakes it's awesome.
It's incredibly simple to make starter, but don't trust me. Google for the sourdough FAQ and then look for the answer to how to make starter. It's amazing how it works.
