World Of Warcraft Open Beta to Start Next Week

Zonk posted more than 9 years ago | from the zug-zug dept.

Drac8 writes "Blizzard and Fileplanet have announced that the World of Warcraft open beta will start at the beginning of next week. Fileplanet subscribers and current Beta testers are invited to start now. Fileplanet subscribers may find it slow going, as servers are overloaded and requests for signups/keys are going very slow."

not much of a test (-1)

JVert (578547) | more than 9 years ago | (#10700308)

you failed it.

Dont know how the game is running but the website went south just a few hours after announcing the stress test.

Re:not much of a test (3, Insightful)

Rentar (168939) | more than 9 years ago | (#10700387)

Maybe a server crashing during a load test ist not 'failure' after all?

Sometimes a load test is not asking "Does our server crash when it's slashdotted?" (as this is a rather boring question, with the answer beeing yes or no), but "What part of our server is mostly stressed by a serious slashdotting and which part(s) do we need to enhance/replace to make it more stable?".

The latter question has quite a lot of possible interesting answers ranging from hardware (the new IBM DeathStar failed!) via software (our ftp-servers have a fixed maximum of 5 connections) to wet-ware (our sysadmin was shocked by the amount of traffic, had a heart-attack and stumbled over the power cable).

When someone is serious about this question than a test that looks like a failure to someone else can be a huge success.

In regards to the software testing, I think it has more to do with the game than the network connection. Specifically, what actions are taking too much CPU time/bandwidth/memory. Hopefully they'll get the kinks out in time for the open beta.

difference between stress test and open beta (3, Insightful)

vehn23 (684035) | more than 9 years ago | (#10700416)

If you're wondering: paying $16 to fileplanet to play a beta a week before everyone else and 2 weeks before release.

Re:difference between stress test and open beta (5, Informative)

Tofof (199751) | more than 9 years ago | (#10701216)

Actually, that's the cost for a quarterly subscription. A few hours after the announcement went up on fileplanet last night, they changed the link. It was originally pointing to the $7.90 basic subscription page. [] is the cheaper signup page.

Re:difference between stress test and open beta (2, Informative)

FuryVII (819717) | more than 9 years ago | (#10703178)

Actually if you are a REALLY cheap bastard you can sign up for $6.95. It takes so snooping around though.

$5.95 []

Sign up for the free Exigo beta [] and fill in the credit card info for $0.00, hit Next until it says "Merchant Error. Please try again."

Now back on FilePlanet, it seems to work for getting the WoW beta key signups too.

And these are the guys that totally screwed over the BNetD team when they did nothing wrong.

I will NOT be buying this game.

Blizzard Sucks ASS.

I didn't pay for Starcraft, and me and my friends used BNetD to play it for years. I'm not saying Blizzard was right to kill the project, but maybe they had their reasons.

Yes, and you just demonstrated them exactly. One of the reasons Blizzard's games sell so well is that when people buy them, they're not paying for the (easliy copied) software, but the unique registration key that let's them get on Blizzard's online services. With BNetD, however, people can play the games online without a key, which defeats the whole system.

Figures... (1)

EvilAardvark (819035) | more than 9 years ago | (#10700796)

I've been waiting for months, never making it into the closed beta and now, with my FilePlanet account (no flaming please) I can finally play, and I am travelling the next two weeks. Figures.

I wonder if WoW will play on a 1.6ghz laptop with a mobile Radeon 7000...

Re:Figures... (1)

vehn23 (684035) | more than 9 years ago | (#10701043)

Probably. A friend has a much worse set up and he can run it adequetly.

Re:Figures... (2, Informative)

glowimperial (705397) | more than 9 years ago | (#10702252)

Probably. WoW has supposedly reasonable hardware demands. I used to routinely play SWG on a 4 year old laptop with a Geforce2go 32 Meg chip. Have fun on the road.

i'll give them 8 more hours. (1)

pezpunk (205653) | more than 9 years ago | (#10703309)

the only reason i payed this stupid $7.90 toa a company i despise is for an extra week of WoW. a dollar a day, ok, i guess i can swing that. i feel dirty, but i broke down and did it.

now, i'm unhappily waiting for my CD key. if i don't get it by early this evening, i'm going to start trying to get my money back from FP.

1. Save up a month of Vacation from work. Check
2. Full-size fridge stocked with Redbull. Check
3. Emergency store of Cheese-wiz and crakers. Check
4. Plenty of empty bottles for call of nature. Check

I am now prepared to cease being a productive member of society and devote my life to World of Warcraft.... May God have mercy on my soul.

DrunkClam (555170) | more than 9 years ago | (#10701211)

I tried during the stress test signup, they took my money, but my cdkey was invalid, they fucked up and wouldn't give me another one. Neither them or Blizzard did anything to resolve the issue. So plase don't make that mistake.

No more accounts (1)

PhosterPharms (748413) | more than 9 years ago | (#10702262)

I just paid the money to FilePlanet and registered for the beta only to recieve a message that they are out of CD Keys and I will recieve one when the next group is released. Basically, don't waste your time paying because you won't get shit.

Re:No more accounts (1)

AyanamiChan (695112) | more than 9 years ago | (#10702362)

They release CD Keys in large batches every 6 hours ago. They have more, they're just not giving them out for a while. Don't ask me why. Fileplanet is the devil. Blizz made a mistake pairing up with them, but the Blizzard Downloader I'm using at the moment isn't much better. The real, FREE, open beta starts in a week or two, after this final stress test. I'm not sure how they plan on distributing clients/CD Keys/Accounts for it, but chances are it will be a long and frustrating affair.

Re:No more accounts (2, Interesting)

benjamin264 (813527) | more than 9 years ago | (#10702602)

Fileplanet also indicated that if you sign up for the final stress test, you are guaranteed an open beta slot. Blizzard's site says that Fileplanet only has so many slots...

I just cannot bring myself to support Fileplanet. Make me wait in line for an hour or pay money for a patch to fix a game that I already bought?

Skipping the rest of the tangent, if Blizzard needs Fileplanet to assist them with distribution, how ready are they for handling an MMRPG? I know some people that play Everquest and say that the servers are just emptying out, people are ebaying accounts like mad on the cheap. Are they heading to WoW?

Then I read that Blizzard does not have WoW balanced and is lacking character development content at the close of beta.

Blizzard has a great reputation, but are they going to ruin it on this game?

krinsh (94283) | more than 9 years ago | (#10703792)

I won't pay money to preview games - the idea being that I preview FOR FREE before PAYING for a game I like. Thus, I'll wait for hours to get the download - but have it finished in 20 minutes on my broadband connection. If I don't get an Open Beta slot; I won't play the game unless I see my other friends playing and I like what I see. I think Blizzard will be ready - game servers are usually not maintained by the game company themselves - they will patch and put content; but there's usually another team that does the servers. I have no idea what the technology will be behind the game; but I would not be surprised if it were's tech - I have a strong suspicion that Guild Wars is using their tech. [one disclaimer: I don't work for them; but is/was a few months ago headquartered in Martinsburg, WV where I live. I'm particularly fond of technology companies coming to my state.] I've heard of hemorraghing from EverQuest - but it could be for a number of reasons - Star Wars just released their space expansion; Guild Wars' closed beta is free and accessible for pre-orderers; EQ 2 is coming out soon; and Dark Age of Camelot has a new expansion that is gorgeous. [2nd disclaimer: I have friend(s) that work for Mythic; and no I can't get goodies from them.] The EQ hemorraghing could be from players finally fed up with Sony's customer support; as several SW and EQ players I know quit for that reason alone. I haven't heard of a loss of Dark Age players.

Reapy (688651) | more than 9 years ago | (#10712295)

Fileplanet blows. I might suggest . I pay for them for the reviews and movies and what not of games. I think new content is free but the older stuff they charge you for. Either way, it works nice since most patches get up on gamespot pretty quickly and they have some good bandwidth. So on top of the reviews, having a non clobbered place to get patches and a cheapy discount on purchases makes the 20 bucks a year sound pretty reasonable.

I got a message when I signed up yesterday (about 16 hours ago) saying that I would definately get in, just not straight away. Still no sign of a key or ability to download. I'd like to get started soon since I only have 256k ADSL and 2.5 Gig is going to take a while to arrive.

Re:No more accounts (1)

Just got the email saying I'm in. Download looks like it's going to take 24 hours though.

WoW vs EQ2 (3, Interesting)

EQ2 goes live: 8 November, for $49.99

WoW open beta begins: 8 November, for free

Re:WoW vs EQ2 (1)

krinsh (94283) | more than 9 years ago | (#10703847)

I don't think it is a coincidence at all. There are several subscription games vying for our attention - and I think Guild Wars is going to beat them all to death with one of their skull-shaped hammers because of overall money saved.

Re:WoW vs EQ2 (1)

TheFev (827659) | more than 9 years ago | (#10704822)

Too True. Competitive marketing is the name of the game, and the MMORPG companies seem to be overkilling it these days. However, I do not agree with your statement of Guild Wars taking the whole pie- It may be free, but WoW's got the fanbase.

Re:WoW vs EQ2 (1)

krinsh (94283) | more than 9 years ago | (#10715714)

Oh; I don't think it will take the whole pie though I guess it came out like that. I think they don't care when they release because their game will lack the monthly fee; which is one of the biggest factors influencing MMO purchasing decisions - I mean, most people are only going to pay for one game at a time.

Remember... (0)

MageWyn (6983) | more than 9 years ago | (#10705236)

Remember when there was real shareware? I understand that newer games, especially MMORPGs, are far beyond DOOM or WolfenStein 3D, but it was nice to download the first couple of levels for free. You were able to get a feel for the game and generally tell if it was a load of crap or not. Now we wait for Open Beta Tests. I personally will never drop a dime on FilePlanet.

I had to resubmit it three times (1)

Randar the Lava Liza (562063) | more than 9 years ago | (#10705411)

After joining, I had to fill out the subscription form for the beta 3 times. Now when I do it, I see my beta key and a link to download the massive 2.5 gb file. So if you haven't gotten it yet, just resubmit and you should get through.

Localized servers == suck (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10705786)

You know what sucks, that whole localized server crap they are pulling off. I mean anyone in the world can sign up for this test by subscribing to file planet but once retail hits only people with a USA billing address can play, wtf is up with that.

I live in mexico so I sent an email to the billing department asking if I would be able to play or should my friends and I cancel our preorders. They replied saying they don't have that information ummm ok. I can get someone in the US to pay for me , but Blizzard sucks for making me have to go through that extra step to fucking play.

spyrochaete (707033) | more than 9 years ago | (#10706382)

Consider yourself lucky if you can download the 2.5 GB file from Fileplanet. Earlier beta testers were forced to use a proprietary BitTorrent client which totally maxed out your connection, both up and down. My disappointment with the game itself aside, this delivery method was totally unacceptable. There are many ISP's who impose 5GB combined transfer limits per month, and after uploading at 45KB\s for 3 hours these people were lucky to get the whole game at all, never mind play.

The quality of this game and of the installer are not up to par with Blizzard's usually high standards. If you've played other MMORPG's in the past, don't go nuts trying to jump on this beta-wagon. It's very ho hum. I deleted it in less time than it took to download the beast.

Re:Shoot the messenger (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10709184)

I don't get charged for uploads and I love BitTorrent distributions. Proprietary clients are another thing though. If you do get charged for uploads, you should be able to at least throttle your uploading speed.

Maybe allow throttling and restrict the download speed to a function of the upload speed? So you still have to participate in the torrent but can limit your expense by waiting a bit longer.

Arkham (10779) | more than 9 years ago | (#10706419)

I've been playing this game for the past 5 months and it's truly amazing. I had no plans to play the retail version but I am so addicted now I have no choice.

If you want to get a head start downloading the 2.5GB client for the upcoming open beta, I put a copy of the Mac downloader and of the raw torrent (PC and Mac) on my server: []

Crazy as it might seem, maybe you could stop bitching about how you can't get immediate access to the betas because you signed up too late and just keep a regular subscription going there.

I'm not saying that you HAVE to pay $7 a month to get into betas but goddamn, don't get all noobish and whine EVERY SINGLE TIME you see something on fileplanet and sign up too late. Good god, learn from your mistakes and just get an account with early email notification or stop trying to say the world is against you, but pick one please.
