NASA Attempts to Break Record with Mach 10 Flight

michael posted more than 9 years ago | from the fireball dept.

Science 27

starannihilator writes "Wired News is reporting that NASA is planning on using its new SCRAMJET to break the aircraft speed record (on Earth, anyway) at Mach 10 (7,000 mph or 10-times the speed of sound). Using the hypersonic X-43A, NASA hopes to break the record on Monday, November 15th."

Not as bad as their dupe google story they went as far as deleting (after it racked up about 25 comments, pretty much all flaming slashdot for posting a dupe within 3 hours of the original).

My post to it was still in my comment history for a few hours after, then I guess they realised they needed to trash all references to the SID or the next story would carry its posts.

Still have my moderation history in my messages though,

TACO - LET THE GNAA BE EDITORS., posted to Google Cranks Up Index, has been moderated Funny (+1).

Less than four hours. Is that a record? Does somebody keep a record book?

Science: NASA to Attempt Mach 10 Flight Next Week Space Posted by CmdrTaco on 11-11-04 16:11 from the hello-john-val-says-hi dept. Dirak writes "NASA intends to break its own aircraft-speed record for the second time this year by flying X43a scramjet ten times faster than sound. On November 15 the X-43A supersonic-combustion ramjet - or scramjet - will again take to the skies aiming for Mach 10." ( Read More... | 30 of 226 comments | science.slashdot.org )

what's the point of daddypants (1)

dleifelohcs (777508) | more than 9 years ago | (#10794319)

I emailed daddypants half an hour ago about the dupe.

Still, it gets posted.

avalys (221114) | more than 9 years ago | (#10794572)

Yeah, none of the messages I've sent to daddypants have ever been answered.

Dead links, articles with no links to the stories, dupes, articles with blatant typos (like Christopher Reeves), and so forth.

Oh well.

I got a reply ONCE, I don't remember who from, but I think the topic was grammar. "Whoops" was the reply.

They must have been thinking of George Reeves.

Mach 10?!?! (4, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10794361)

Man, I coulda sworn I just read [slashdot.org] about this not too long ago. I wonder if anything has changed since then.

Ahhh, this time it was posted by Michael, not Commander Taco! Cool! I like the Michael stories better.

safety (1)

If the design could be made stable enough for longer flights, engineers believe the aerospace and defense industries might one day use it to build cheaper rockets and faster missiles.

Cheaper rockets and faster missiles--I feel safer already. And just think: while it may deliver a deadly nuclear warhead, at least it doesn't pollute on the way to delivering it.

Just wait... (2, Funny)

Some day, a story will be posted twice in the same day by the same editor. And not because he clicked O.K. twice, either!

No no no. You don't understand the implications.

The reason there is a duplicate is they've already done the test, but in a freak accident they slingshotted around the Earth's gravity well, and have gone back in time.

Now with their special future knowledge, they're announcing they're about to try it again. :-P

No, you misunderstand... (3, Funny)

The previous story was about NASA's scramjet, while this one is about Wired's story about it.

Totally different, see?

Everyone knows you can't go faster then Warp 10. These folks at Nasa have such an imagination! Puhhhlease!!!

Re:STNG (1)

bairy (755347) | more than 9 years ago | (#10796292)

Actually it was ST:V that beat.. or rather reached the warp 10 record, although if you read some accounts the older series used to talk about a different scale which went up to warp 13

Then, Warp 10! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10800560)

Everyone knows you can't go faster then Warp 10.

If I understand this correctly, warp 10 is achieved when acceleration ceases. When you can't go faster, then - warp 10. Brilliant!

My god man, do you know what you've done?

It isn't a dupe, it's just that it is so fast - you *think* you see it twice.
