Impressive timing, Slashdot (5, Informative)

Nine Tenths of The W (829559) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937048)

He only made the case mod 9 months ago and it's already on the front page

Yeah I saw it maybe... 6 months back

good going /.

Yeah I saw it maybe... 6 months back frankly this is old news good going /.

I remember it from way back, too. But I couldn't find it using the slashdot search. However, this dupe [slashdot.org] did show up. So this dupe is also less than a month old. Good job, slashdot.

Why is this site still up? (4, Interesting)

Alien54 (180860) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937172)

It isn't slashdotted. It's a hobby page. Something is very very wrong here.

Re:Why is this site still up? (1, Informative)

lintux (125434) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937179)

I guess the @Home (reasonably big cable ISP in the Netherlands) webspace server can handle some load.

it's because it's cached on all our machines already from the last time it was posted =)

I was confused when I looked at the pictures at first, because I swore I had seen them before. Wait, I did. Many months ago in fact. I guess anyone can make a mistake. We all do it

That's not a HL2 case. (3, Funny)

That's not a Half Life 2 case mod! That's a Half Life case mod with 'Half Life' crossed out and 'Half Life 2' written in in crayon!

That is outrageous.
Frankly, I would demand an immediate refund of the cost of reading the article. I would demand payment for wasted time spent reading the headline, wasted CPU cycles, wasted wear and tear on your 'leet system, and wasted electricity.

That'll teach them!

Wow! (-1, Troll)

Skillz (4, Insightful)

Hamstij (831222) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937063)

The date of its construction aside, I wish I had not only the skill and equipment required to do something like this, but the creative ability to even know where to begin!

Re:Skillz (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10937142)

Other than the HL2 logo on the side, it looks more like the Fallout-style than half-life.

Re:Skillz (2, Insightful)

ScrewMaster (602015) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937519)

Actually, it reminds me a lot of some of the equipment racks in Quake, still-functioning machines that had been built centuries ago and were showing their age.

Heh (5, Interesting)

spikestabber (644578) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937065)

"auto-link" of a URL (1)

mnemonic_ (164550) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937758)

<URL:http://example.com/> will auto-link a URL

isn't it funny that an "auto-link" doesn't actually link URLs automatically? in that it requires user specification of the link.

I made a Half Life 2 case mod (5, Funny)

Nine Tenths of The W (829559) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937066)

I took my Half Life 1 case, removed all the interesting content inside and covered it in bauble and visual enhancements.

Re:I made a Half Life 2 case mod (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10937217)

I heard the physics were better too. If you take a crowbar to it, you can turn that case into tiny fragments, baubles and all...

Full-featured? (5, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10937069)

Does it make his computer call home for authorization before it works?

New addition... (4, Funny)

lxt (724570) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937072)

...so it's an old link, but he's added a new addition to celebrate the release of HL2 - the case has a new motor built in that randomly vibrates the case, causing it so shudder and shake at intervals throughout the game. Now that's the real HL experience :) [...in all fairness, I've had no problems with the skipping bug...]

Re:New addition... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10937397)

Those pictures look very familiar.

At least.. (1)

WhatAmIDoingHere (742870) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937078)

At least the title doesn't claim it to be a Halo 2 mod any longer... Maybe somebody does read email sent to daddypants?

Re:At least.. (1)

orevo (697682) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937100)

I also emailed daddypants the second I saw the title. I wonder exactly how many emails he got because of the horribly incorrect title.

Re:At least.. (0)

is daddypants an american joke, or a genuine nickname? because i don't think i get it if it's supposed to be funny.

Three little words (0, Flamebait)

RealProgrammer (723725) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937082)

Get A Life

Which is a bigger waste of time:

  1. Playing video games
  2. Modding your case to look like video game
  3. Writing an article about a guy who modded his case to look like a video game
    - or the clear winner -
  4. Commenting on an article about a guy who modded his case to look like a video game, when you know you're just going to get modded down Troll, Flamebait and Off-Topic?

This post is a waste even on its own terms.

I need a life, and fast.

5. Reading the "Commenting on an article about a guy who modded his case to look like a video game, when you know you're just going to get modded down Troll, Flamebait and Off-Topic?" and then commenting on it.

5. Moderating a post on an article about a guy who modded his case to look like a video game
6. Meta-moderating a post on an article about a guy who modded his case to look like a video game

7. Profit!

Re:Three little words (1)

atomic-penguin (100835) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937750)

Number 2 and 3 generate lots of revenue and are therefore not wastes of time. Proof of number 2 generating lucrative [alienware.com] money. Proof of number 3 are online ads [google.com].

Number 1 could arguably be productive if you are practicing for tournaments where you can win tangible assets for being a good player.

As for number 4 being a waste of time. We can see it didn't stop you from wasting yours and ours.

Hyprocrite!

Same old story (1)

rzei (622725) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937086)

I can't find the slashdot story quickly enough but this has been all over slashdot already, just look at the date in the forums; 24-02-2004, 15:42.

Not that it'd make the case mod less "attractive" -- great piece of work imho.

(as I missed it first time round) Ace... (1)

mlk (18543) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937090)

I bet the keyboard & mouse are not very nice to use... Bumpy and horrid...

Re:(as I missed it first time round) Ace... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10937308)

If you'd read the article (as I did while he was building it) then you'd know that the damage on the mouse was done precisely to the areas where you don't touch it, to avoid this. Same for the keyboard. And both are covered in ClearCoat, a transparent "paint", so that the surface is not as rough as it looks.

Ergonomics... (1)

DiscoNick (743960) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937094)

I bet that keyboard is pretty damn uncomfortable. He ripped some holes in the bezel right under the ZXCV keys. I'm a big fan of HL 2, but DO NOT mess with my QWERTY!

almost a year ago, hello ! (1)

l3v1 (787564) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937101)

The blackmesa case was made 9-10 months ago. And while it's a very nice and cool case indeed (and he has some other cool ones on the stock), and it rightfully deserves the /. public attention, reporting it like this kind of news here... ridiculous.

DiscoNick (743960) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937117)

Judging by the harsh criticism of the timing of this post, I'd bet that the getting-a-piece-of-ass factor of /. readers is at an all-time low. This should not be that offensive people.. it's not like he posted something on the latest in fashion in NYC

Fallout? (4, Interesting)

nautical9 (469723) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937124)

Maybe it's just me, but it looks more inspired from Fallout [nma-fallout.com], than HL2 (other than the huge logo, of course). Especially the front buttons, rust, and yellow/black warning lines.

My Duke Nukem 3D case mod is still going strong though, with its 33Mhz '486, 8 megabyte ram, 50 megabyte harddisk and tseng ET4000 videocard.

Re:how long until this is obsolete? (0)

Yeah, the trick would be to make a Duke Nukem Forever case mod. You'd be set.

Or am I the only one who thinks case mods are pointless? I would rather my computer be fast than look good. After all, I'm sure that, like me, most peoples' computers live safely tucked away under their desks.

Re:Is it me... (1)

VocabularyNazi (816686) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937259)

well, mine's not tucked under a desk, and to be certain, it definitely ain't pretty. i usually remove all plastic/sheet metal plates/coverings and just have the grey metal chassis with wires and cables hanging out all over the place.

like you, though, i just can't see the point in these "circus computers," as i like to call them(as in "hey, nice computer. better get it back to the circus before they find out it's missing").

Is it me...The Disappearing Computer. (0)

glad conformity suits you. and you don't care about your visual environment. In two years, your computer will be slow, but this case will still turn heads.

What part of this "Look, I made a pretty case" website is "Stuff that Matters"?

This is the kind of thing I'd expect from [H] (and this WAS posted to [H] about 4 months ago) but /.?

Come on, people.. It can't be that slow of a news day.

Here's the newest mod!!! (2, Informative)

da3dAlus (20553) | more than 9 years ago | (#10937238)

Hey, down here, mod this one up. If you want a REAL HL2 mod, this is the Blackmesa 2 mod [bit-tech.net] by the same guy. I believe this was a requisitioned mod from Valve, so this guy went all out to model it after real in-game models. I should note that parts 1, 2, and 3 for this mod are posted, and it's already been about a week since it was last on Bluesnews, so once again /. is behind the curve anyway.

Halflife2 is the most overrated game on the planet, second only to halflife. And I'm sorry, but Valve is the worst software producing company on the planet. They've screwed their customer's every step of the way. People who support Valve should be flogged to death, then buried in irradiated mud.

But here the design in the game has been transferred to the casing. When I looked at the green water in the glass, I thought, "I hope it serves as cooling also". And it did.
Very nicely done.
