Tankjumping in Halo 2

Zonk posted more than 9 years ago | from the watch-that-first-step dept.

Media 53

The original Warthog Jump video from Halo is a hilarious and informative way to learn about game physics. An Anonymous reader wrote in to mention a Spare Time production in which they try to recreate the essence of the experiment. "A tank on top of a shield in Halo2 proves to be quite an experience! We got it on tape. Enjoy!"

It isn't on the front page, so it should be safe. It was able to flood my downlink with ease, so they're doing just fine so far.

or it's not intresting enough..

now that I was d/loading it was at
*There have now been 703 downloads of Spare Time: Shield Jump.* and came at some 83kbyte/s.

now.. that is already over 21 gigs though... hopefully they don't pay per gig or might be in for a surprise by the time the day is out..

Re:30.8 megs (2, Interesting)

gl4ss (559668) | more than 9 years ago | (#10939699)

though.. having now watched the video i gotta wonder if they're going to get screwed for using a popular song for the soundtrack(or perhaps they paid royalties? nah i don't think so, but then again it would be majorly stupid to not do so and distribute it from your own website with your own name)...

with that said, the video really IS boring, you could have made more exciting stuff in 4d sports driving(most of you know this game as 'stunts') for gods sake. the tanks just fly out of control spinning unrealistically and then proceed to explode. not to mention what fun stuff you could have whipped up with some carmageddon(tanks in this vid don't even get smashed before exploding).

such 'physics' would be considered bugs in other games...

so I guess they really have just too much money, bandwith and time. well, i'm making a wild guess that they're actually on jaguarpc's 5.95/mo deal with 45gb of transfers included monthly(extra gb is a dollar per month, but that's if you pay in advance, their site doesn't seem too clear on prices what you would pay afterwards you went over your limit ).

Moral of the story: find out what the consequences are before posting a video link to slashdot. This guy was asking for it from the beginning.

Bit Torrent Server? (2, Interesting)

Syrcam (540030) | more than 9 years ago | (#10939535)

How would someone go about setting up a Bit Torrent server to seed this movie?

Re:Bit Torrent Server? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10939590)

Why wait for somebody to respond and then read their response when you can simply read the manual in the meantime?

no need, i'm getting over 200 KiB/s over this HTTP/FTP connection... something i only see on the most popular of the popular of torrents.

(correction, it finished downloading before i clicked "Submit")

Re:Bit Torrent Server? (1)

You can use Azureus (azureus.sourceforge.net), which has a tracker built into the client. I think this is the best torrent client available for people who downloads torrents often.

Domo arigato. Although it's coming down at basically the same speed as the download I had started, I feel better about providing some upload bandwidth to the other suckers trying to get it. ;-)

I had no idea that SO MANY people were interested in tank jumping ;)

So THAT's it, eh? (1)

skyman8081 (681052) | more than 9 years ago | (#10939620)

I was playing Delta Halo this weekend, when I found my tank suddenly flying through the air, as I was going over an elevated section with lots of those sheilds. I knew that sheild jumping was a time-honored practice in Halo, for getting out of Maps like "Truth and Reconciliation", I didn't realize that they made it work for vehicles as well.

I guess the use of Havok made the work of such heroes as Frogblast, Dark Helmet, Randall Glass somewhat different for Halo 2.

Re:So THAT's it, eh? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10946232)

Yeah, the shield thing is "impressive" that is if you haven't seen what a charging Wraith can do to a Scorpion. Now THAT is just something.

A friend and I were playing co-op near the end of the 100,000 Years War area. We'd killed everything, I had stolen a Wraith, he had a Scorpion. I just wanted to see what would happen, in the interests of science and the footsteps of Newton. Well, the scorpion launched so far you couldn't see it on my screen anywhere, on his the tanked flipped twenty or thirty times he flew out and the tank continued on to orbit flipping all the way.

warthog jumping (5, Interesting)

TheKarateMaster (810628) | more than 9 years ago | (#10939847)

I was playing a game in Zanzibar with warthogs when I noticed the explosive crates... When I drove into them, I did at LEAST 8 flips in the air (barrel rolls) It would be interesting to see what would happen if you rounded all of them up and drove into them... or better yet, attack them with an energy blade... interesting...

Three words: Wow (5, Funny)

This is truly groundbreaking stuff. Pixar's got their work cut out for them when they release Cars with stuff floating around like this. And these guys rendered the whole thing on a 700MHz PC!

Why is someone's plaintext email address... (2, Insightful)

EnglishTim (9662) | more than 9 years ago | (#10941113)

Why is someone's plaintext email address on the frontpage of Slashdot?

Bit irresponsible, don't you think?

Perhaps the submission really was anonymous and the /. editors have some beef with this Aidran Steele fellow so they decided to abuse their power to get him sent a bunch of crap to his account?

Re:Why is someone's plaintext email address... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10943175)

Maybe he's testing out gmail's spam filters.

It's 11:42 GMT on the morning after and this is the result of the "we got it on tape" link:

This Account Has Been Suspended
Please contact the billing/support department as soon as possible.

You know if someone on /. linked to your space and no one bothered to tell you and then you got charged for excessive bandwidth, dya think you could sue them for it back/

Re:Oops (1)

dreamquick (229454) | more than 9 years ago | (#10942835)

Only if they don't put your email address on the front page, thus filling your mailbox with so much crap that you can't ever use it again, or see the little "love notes" from your host demanding you pay them extortionate rates for extra bandwidth for that matter.

Do I smell conspiracy? :)

Mysterious associations... (1)

WWWWolf (2428) | more than 9 years ago | (#10942938)

For some reason, every time someone talks of "jumping" techniques in Halo, I'm somehow, somehow reminded of the phrase "crash-jumping" [werewolves.org], even though that has little to do with Halo as such...

did this already (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#10944493)

I did this ages ago. Never got any attention.
