Linux 204

Quiberon writes "A distribution of Knoppix loaded with games has a bootable CD with 700 MB of open-source games, 3d support for NVIDIA, ATI, and Intel Extreme, gamepad support for XWindows. uni-kl is University of Kaiserlautern, the first on the list for distributing SuSE fixes - they are good. Every kid should have one for Christmas morning."

Interesting a distrobution that actually has support for a ati video card, where 3d is already setup. Heck, its worth downloading just for that.

No kidding. If I woke up and found a friggin Knoppix Games CD under the tree I'd burn the house down. Either give them an Xbox or PS2 or some Windows games like Half-Life 2 or don't even bother. Woo, I can play Tuxracer or Solitaire on my free Open source Linux boot disc!!! Thanks Dad you cheap motherfucker.

Like it, like it. Speaking of cheap mother fucking dads, mine got me a watch off price drop TV. What makes it worse is that he bought me a watch last xmas as well. They are not even stylish, they are those you buy because the price is right and you think they look good, as whats happened in my case. I'm gonna fucking tell this year as well. I don't even where them anyway, shows how much he knows!

If that were the case he might have gotten the son some lube. Or perhaps a ball gag in case Dad likes it rough.

in thinking that Michael is not celebrating xmas? He seems to be doing his duty as a hardcore geek by staying here and posting us stories for us lonely buggers to read?

Re:Am I correct... (0)

Now that would have been a nice poll.

How do you spend christmas?

- Family. I _do_ have one.
- Friends. I _do_ have a social life.
- Sleeping.
- Coding.
- F***ing. Well, at least have an hour ago. Partner is gone coding now.
- Writing letter of last goodbye to the world.
- Fragging Cowboy Neal.

I, for one, am alone in a small room in a huge empty student hall in an even larger but scaringly quiet metropolis in the 51st state, writing stupid posts on /. Can it get worse?

Christmas is a soul-sucking holiday invented by evil corporate overlords whose only goal is to get you, the ignorant American consumer masses to get in your gas-guzzing SUVs and drive down to Wal-Mart.

As a result, I am boycotting.

Sincerely,

Good man, michael! Being a Christmas rebel myself, it can be a bit hard when you feel like others don't understand your motivation and generally call you a scrooge or grinch (or mod you down :P ). I too have had enough of the crass commercialism of Christmas (note that marketers don't even use the C word anymore... now it's the "season" or the "holidays").

In October, I made up my own little notes based on ideas I found on xmasresistance.org [xmasresistance.org], and sent them out to my family and friends.

They basically read "Dear family/friends/loved ones, I am truly looking forward to sharing in the friendship and togetherness of Christmas this year, however, I will not be buying gifts and I kindly ask that you do not buy a gift for me. I sincerely look forward to spending time with everyone close to me. If you feel compelled to make a gesture of giving, in lieu of a gift to me, please make a small donation to the charity of your choice on my behalf. Love Chris."

It's called automation, dude. I think the stories are just queued up, and posted at about 1 hour intervals during the day, and less frequently in the night. The times are adjusted a little, randomly, to apply a veneer of human touch.

i'm sorry to inform you but whatever you may think choosing some links from a random irc channel or linkblog and doing two seconds worth of commenting hardly needs that much effort.

not that hard to squeeze in on a day that you would be sitting on your ass all day long anyways!

GPL? (5, Interesting)

mowler2 (301294) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180642)

Isnt it a GPL violation to ship the Linux kernel together with nvidia binary modules?

Re:GPL? (1)

nutznboltz (473437) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180647)

There may be ways around it. Consider that NTFS is supported on Knoppix by running the MicroSoft NTFS drivers off of a Windows filesystem.

Re:GPL? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11180683)

It is not because extra software/drivers are included that they should suddenly change licence.

Nothing holds you back to include non-GPL drivers with a GPL kernel, as long as the drivers are not based on a GPL driver and the GPL kernel is distributed according to the GPL rules.

Re:GPL? (3, Informative)

un1xl0ser (575642) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180787)

It said it had nVidia support, not the drivers from nVidia. I would suspect they are using Open Source drivers (nv module).

Re:GPL? (5, Informative)

pmjordan (745016) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180864)

It says 3D support, so it must be the closed source ones. However, as others have pointed out, the nvidia modules aren't being distributed as part of the kernel, but simply taint it at runtime when they are loaded.

Re:GPL? (2, Informative)

r00zky (622648) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180948)

In the Knoppix distribution there is a script that downloads and automagically installs the nvidia binary driver.

Dunno about this one.

Don't besmirch coal! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11180746)

A stocking full of coal is more useful than a CD full of communist software. At least with coal I can make myself warm by burning it. With GNU/Linux, it'd be crashing left and right, chock full of security holes, and to top it off, I'd have to pay $699 to SCO. No thanks, I'll leave that to the cock-smoking teabaggers.

A Games CD for Linux on BitTorrent ... mmm.. (4, Insightful)

Gopal.V (532678) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180652)

What games on that CD ?. Is it just the ordinary TuxRacer ... Or have they included the demos for Quake3 and stuff like that ?. (It's already slashdotted).

Thank god the the download won't get slashdotted - BitTorrent tracker looks great (quite enough seeds).

Re:A Games CD for Linux on BitTorrent ... mmm.. (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11180951)

Thank god the the download won't get slashdotted - BitTorrent tracker looks great (quite enough seeds).

what a nice way to show the legit use of the Bittorrent protocol!!

see MPAA/RIAA/DMCA BT isnt a DEMO thing, theirs fair use!!

Pity the performance sucks (0, Troll)

We gentoo users are going to get the better frame rates if 3d multiplayer ever takes off on linux.

knoppix-3.7 (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11180661)

i recently DLed & burned to CD-R Knoppix-3.7 and first gave it a test run off the CD, runs good enough, so i do a HD install and it runs even better. i have this Cannon flatbed scanner that is running better now than it did with any other Linux distro, now i keep knoppix installed mostly for just that purpose, apt-get works too with the Debian mirrors :^)

If your brother is AKnightCowboy (608632), you might want to scroll up a bit, read and re-think. (Or check the fire in-sewer-ants.)

Weee, server dead after a dozen posts, no list of what games are on it, the Torrent is german... I haven't had this much fun since last year standing around in the ATI parking lot with a few thousand other freezing geeks waiting for a swamped job fair. (At ATI, Mordak the Preventer runs HR.)

Now that's one fine Chistmas present we are giving to the admin of that server... A slashdotting of the finest.

What a beautiful present...

You've obviously never played DoomTetris, the FPS version. It's damned hard to catch those blocks while holding the flashlight, and that creepy music...

Not totally new (1, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11180722)

Morphix (http://www.morphix.org/) has a game iso as well.
(Morphix is a modular live-cd distro based on Knoppix in the first place which comes in several flavours like light-gui (xfce4), heavy-gui(gnome/kde) and a game iso).

Confused (1, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11180726)

uni-kl is University of Kaiserlautern, the first on the list for distributing SuSE fixes - they are good

I'm confused, this is knoppix or SuSE? What does being "first on the list for distributing SuSE fixes" mean towards making knoppix? Being a mirror doesn't give you any more credibility than being a Kazaa node.

Language? (1)

SkaOMatic (771887) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180730)

Checking out the comments on the tracker, it seems this could be a German version. Can anyone confirm/deny? I've got a nice DL groove on - and only unused bandwidth is truly wasted - but I'm hoping my interest was not piqued for naught.

Isn't language changeable? (1)

NnT042 (826217) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180859)

Still in the process of downloading...

But if it's just like the other Knoppixes, and it turned out to be German, all you'd have to do is "cheat" with lang=us, wouldn't you?

Re:Isn't language changeable? (1)

SkaOMatic (771887) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180882)

One would think so, but another comment on the torrent claimed that there was no lang param. Could just be a lack of smack-in-the-face instruction on the insta-help screen.

Time to test.

My Linux version of Quake III Arena... (2, Funny)

stankulp (69949) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180732)

...should finally live again when I install Knoppix to the hard drive.

I only got the NVidia drivers installed right one time, and I could never do it right again.

It's actually pretty cool to have the acclerated video drivers install this easily.

Re:My Linux version of Quake III Arena... (2, Funny)

gentoo_user (843424) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180802)

Gentoo makes this easy as, "emerge nvidia-kernel" and all you have to do is spend a full weekend configuring and compiling your linux system first.

DVD edition? (1)

MarkByers (770551) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180777)

According to the site they are only producing a CD version, but I hope that at some point they will make a DVD compilation with all the games from all the CD releases, plus some more. That would be an impressive DVD.

Hopefully they will have room for fish-fillets on the DVD edition!

I'd love it (2, Informative)

canofbutter (843238) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180850)

If I was still a kid I'd love my parents to give me a Knoppix CD: it would show that not only did they know what it was (at least sort of), but they'd have known how to get it and burn it. That much computer literacy is the best gift one can give...

Language, 3d (2, Informative)

Quiberon (633716) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180917)

It's easy enough to make it English (knoppix lang=en or knoppix26 lang=en if you like 2.6 kernels). 3d support is proper, i.e. 'nvidia' not 'nv'. Believed legal; you can separate out the 'nvidia' if you want an untainted version. Besides, which grinch would disagree with a free distribution ?

Nothing to do with SuSE, just pointing out that uni-kl have a track record of being trustworthy.

How about which games are on the CD? (5, Informative)

Vladan (829136) | more than 9 years ago | (#11180984)

Let me be the +%d Informative karma whore and post the actual contents of the Knoppix Games CD before we all rush off and go download 700MB over our feeble North American DSL/cable connections.

From here [linuxcentral.com], the newest games on the CD are:

Castle-Combat [linux-games.com]
Globulation 2 [ysagoon.com]
Hatman [linuxlots.com]
Kobodeluxe [olofson.net]
Miniracer [sourceforge.net]
Pingus [seul.org]
Rafkill

You need at least 256 MB RAM to use your accelerated video card. That should give you a taste of what's on the CD. Personally, I don't think it's worth it. It contains a lot of nostalgic arcade games written by fans of those games for other fans. Also, the GamesKnoppix distro organizer has himself said there are no violent games on this CD.

On an unrelated matter, Merry Christmas

Now here's the rest of the games on the CD:
  • Boson
  • Bsdgames
  • Crimson Fields
  • Dosbox (Emulator)
  • Empire
  • Konquest
  • Mangoquest
  • Pysol
  • Tuxcart
  • Zsnes (Emulator)
  • Ace-of-penguin
  • Battle for Wesnoth
  • Bzflag, Bzflag-Server
  • Clanbomber
  • Crossfire (GTK client)
  • Enigma
  • Foobillard
  • Freeciv, Freeciv-server
  • Freesci
  • Gltron
  • Gnuchess
  • Jump'n'Bump (joystick support patch, special graphic patches)
  • Ksokoban
  • Lbreakout2
  • Lgeneral
  • Miniracer
  • Nethack
  • Netpanzer
  • Neverball
  • Tuxracer
  • Xgalaga
  • XMame, XMess (Emulators)
  • Xpilot

So I googled Kaiserslautern, and sure enough, it's the sister city of my crappy home town. [cityofdavenportiowa.com]

Apparently I live in the ugly, less popular, dumber sister city.

(I'm sure everyone found that tidbit of knowledge absolutely wonderful)
