You NEED flash photography in case the robot goes berserk and starts attacking innocent bystanders.

Better you than me. I was going to say it and felt relieved some one else got there first. Some things must be said no matter how terrible and no matter what the consequences.

Appropriate, given that it will be 2005.
It is the year 2005, the treacherous Decepticons have conquered the Autobot's home planet of Cyberttron. But, on secret staging grounds, on two of Cybertron's moons, the valiant Autobots plan to retake their homeland.

It won't enslave anybody? I guess that means it doesn't qualify for welcomable-overlord status....

But at least they'll get a short-tempered, socially inept 14-year-old kid to pilot it, right? ....Right?!

Re:Well.... (2)

Masami Eiri (617825) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230111)

Not tall enough for an Eva. About the right size for a Gundam though.. so it'll be a 16-18 year old with developing psychic abilities.

Re:Well.... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11230351)

I prefer the anime-style pilot: naked chick floating in a tank of some sort.

Pictures? (1)

Mercano (826132) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230027)

Anyone see any real pictures of the thing? There is a sketch on the floatcam page, but I want to see the real thing.

Re:Pictures? (1)

tonydiesel (658999) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230051)

Amen, are there any pictures? Especially since the robot in the sketch appears to be shooting flames from its right hand. I wanna see those flames - there may be enslavement potential here yet!

Re:Pictures? (2, Informative)

Neophytus (642863) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230055)

The video link currently shows a 3 minute feed of the robot.

Re:Pictures? (1)

JPriest (547211) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230428)

But why would the California Institute of Technology make it available only in real media format? They have a direct download link for real player but why not instead link the less intrusive real alternative [free-codecs.com] It is nice to see that being a major technical university still does not even make you qualified to admin a small LAN of windows machines.

Real Player (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11230049)

Did anyone else notice thay you need real player to watch the video feed ? It took me months to get it off my computer, there'e no way I'm putting it back on

May I suggest you use Real Alternative?

Er... (2, Insightful)

arodland (127775) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230053)

I fail to see how anything "made entirely of flowers" could possibly qualify as a robot, unless we've made great advances in DNA-based computing and animating plants.

Or did someone maybe mean it would be covered in flowers?

Re:Er... (1)

Seumas (6865) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230100)

This sounds like a "robot" in the same way we've come to know "robosauraus" (that giant dinosaur car that spits fire at monster truck shows) as a robot or those remote control toys on BattleBots/RobotWars.

This strikes me more as "animatronic" than anything else.

Re:Er... (2, Informative)

rockwood (141675) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230181)

If you read the article completely, you see that it states

"Hundreds of volunteers from JPL, Caltech, their families and friends, and some local high school clubs are decorating the float. It is covered from head to toe with flowers, seeds and other natural materials. Decoration takes place at Rosemont Pavilion, next to the Rose Bowl. Today and tomorrow crews are working from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. (PST), and on December 31, as late as needed, to complete the float. Caltech manages JPL for NASA."

Furthermore, it also states " Resembling a giant transformer toy, the massive float...'

This robot is a float shaped like a robot, not an actual working, moving, talking robot. Other than 'smoke and mirror' FX, it smokes from the rocket launchers and the cam is remote controlled.

Re:Er... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11230231)

I fail to see how anything "made entirely of flowers" could possibly qualify as a robot, unless we've made great advances in DNA-based computing and animating plants.

From what I understand this robot's flowers are made entirely out of "atoms" the same subatomic building blocks that the mars rovers are made from.

Re:Er... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11230622)

Do you know where I might be able to obtain or purchase a few of these wondrous and magical "atoms"?

Re:Er... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11230595)

Covered in flowers is correct. There's an old saying: "A robot that smells good, is a robot that... uh... er...". Anyway, you get the idea.

A 50 feet ball instead? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11230066)

Something Fishy (-1, Redundant)

Let the bot have his self-respect (5, Funny)

elecngnr (843285) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230075)

I imagine the look on the robot's face will be similar to the look my dog gets when my wife puts him in a Christmas sweater or when he has one of those stupid bows on his head from the groomers

Who the heck is running the show at NASA these days, Martha Stewart?

Re:Let the bot have his self-respect (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11230596)

Nah... Martha Stewart would build a robot that enslaved the crowd and cooked a fine meal.

It's ROSE PARADE (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11230078)

Well then it's not nerd news! Let me know when the enslaving starts, not the allergies.

Re:*ACHOOO!* (1)

uberpeon (103837) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230403)

I dunno, allergies sure are a characteristic near & dear to many nerd hearts (or their sinuses..Oy!).

Me, I got allergy shots when I was a kid. HAH HA!

Sigh. If only that was the only characteristic... :)

Tax Dollars... (3, Funny)

Shag (3737) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230123)

"Your tax dollars at work."

Hmm, no, that doesn't cut it.

"Your tax dollars at play."

"Your tax dollars on parade."

Dunno.

Anyway, it was probably a lot cheaper to build than most things they lob up into space, so I won't fret.

Re:Tax Dollars... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11230156)

The article clearly states that Caltech funded the float. You do know that Caltech is a privately funded institute, right? So don't worry about your precious tax dollars being spent unwisely. They will be going to help rebuild the structures that we destroyed in Iraq.

Scientists are big kids (1)

af_robot (553885) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230469)

They'd managed to build 50ft rose-robot just for stupid parade and after that NASA tell us they can't afford a new safe space shuttle?!
Oh, please!!
Next time they will build some flying reindeer-robots for Santa or walking apple-pie-robots for Mothers Day!!
Nice budget planning!

Re:Scientists are big kids (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11230552)

buddy, the post right above yours points out that caltech was the one who ponyed up the dough. and it's not like the flower float and a space shuttle are comparable expenditures.

Hidden Purpose? (3, Interesting)

CalTech has a history of antics wrt the Rose Bowl/Parade. Do a google search of "caltech rose bowl" and read all about them.

Just following in Cal Poly's tradition (-1, Flamebait)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11230178)

California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and Pomona created the Animation Category (the Governor's Trophy) in the Rose Parade well over 30 years ago, with the FIRST animated float in the parade.

So, we - the alumni of Cal Poly welcome Cal Tech and JPL to the Rose Parade and the Animation Category - your just a few years late..... better late than never!

PS - If you need any help - just call the ENGINEERS of Cal Poly!

Re:Just following in Cal Poly's tradition (0)

PS - If you need any help - just call the ENGINEERS of Cal Poly!

Something tells me that the engineers of Caltech -- one of the top scientific institutes in the world -- probably won't be requiring assistance from places like Cal Poly or Po-Dunk Community college

Re:Just following in Cal Poly's tradition (1)

NSJunkie (830730) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230446)

How is this flamebait?

Cal Poly Pomona started the tradition of entering a Rose Parade when both SLO and Pomona were still a unified entity. I'm sure it would not be unreasonable for Caltech to ask details about how some things are done with regards to how the Tournament of Roses wants floats to be.

Do you have stairs in your house?

Re:I am the flower robot (1)

kesuki (321456) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230370)

nah it's just the usual /. article submission error... the robot's _armor_ will be entirely composed of flowers, which for maximum effect should be highly halucinogenic or some other mind altering effects to enable the robot overlords to more easily enlave humans.

I, Florbot (2, Insightful)

ScentCone (795499) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230220)

This just seems a little too much like pandering to some sort of anachronistic

humanoid-shaped-robots = space = the-future

right out of the 1950's. I'm guessing some baby boomers might think it's amusing, but most kids will sort of scratch their heads and think, "but... it doesn't DO anything!"

Re:I, Florbot (1)

af_robot (553885) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230255)

unfortunately it will be made entirely of flowers and will not attempt to enslave the crowd. However, they have mounted a camera to it, which will allow you to view the parade from the top of their creation.

Just another damn peaceful robot!
But but they still can at least mount an additional 100mW green laser [slashdot.org] and try to blind [slashdot.org] nearby flying airplanes!

What if they just want us to believe that, and they actually are using the robot for evil? I think the American People are being duped by NASA. It's all a plot to put more surveillance on us.

no such thing as rose bowl parade (1)

drbart (58240) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230261)

the tournament of roses parade pre-dates and is independent of the rose bowl football game.

It's the Rose Parade, Not the Rose Bowl Parade (3, Informative)

NSJunkie (830730) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230294)

Just a little nitpick. The Pasadena Tournament of Roses is colloquially called the "Rose Parade." The Rose Bowl started about a decade after the parade itself.

Not the Rose Bowl Parade (1)

rgmoore (133276) | more than 9 years ago | (#11230301)

It's not the "Rose Bowl Parade", damnit. It's the "Tournament of Roses Parade". The parade was started decades before the football game became a standard part of Pasadena's New Years Day celebration. It would be far more accurate to call the game the Tournament of Roses football game than the other way around.

Poppies are good for individual enslavement, and for highlighting the plight of the poor Afghani drug lords that we liberated.
