Enemy Territory Fortress Mod Arrives

michael posted more than 9 years ago | from the real-men-do-it-with-flamethrowers dept.

First Person Shooters (Games) 138

Rogerpq3 writes "Enemy Territory Fortress (ETF), a port of the Quake3 mod Q3F is now available for Enemy Territory players. ETF is based off the Team Fortress concept: 10 unique classes and a ton of very cool weapons along with some killer maps. The mod includes many game types like CTF, Reverse CTF, Single Flag, Capture & Hold, Assault, King of the Hill and Duel. To play the mod, all people need to do is download Enemy Territory and the latest patch which are both free. You can find a list of download mirrors for ETF here."

Because it's free. Enemy Territory is free, the mod is free. Free is good, slashdot likes free.

Re:Torrent Link for the ETF mod (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11376378)

Actually, speaking of free, ID software had a history of open sourcing their previous-generation game engine shortly after the release of their current-generation one. I mean, it wasn't long after Quake 2 hit the shelves that Quake 1 was made open-source. Again, after Quake 3 came out, the Quake 2 engine was open sourced.

What happened? DOOM 3 came out some time ago, but there hasn't been any word as to when we can expect the Quake 3 engine source to be released. (Or has there?)

It would be great to see the Q3 engine in the open, since Enemy Territory is free as in beer, but the community hasn't had the chance to improve the engine code itself. (Just look at the amazing things that have happened to the quake 1 engine over the past few years. It's _vastly_ superior to what ID software were selling a few years ago!)

Re:Torrent Link for the ETF mod (1)

xactoguy (555443) | more than 9 years ago | (#11376618)

Here's [armadilloaerospace.com] the reason. In brief: Games are still being released using the Q3 engine. Carmack doesn't feel it's fair to release the source until after those projects are release, which is understandable.

astebbin (836820) | more than 9 years ago | (#11375867)

For all those interested in free online FPS's, there is a free game similar to Counter-Strike called "Americas Army: Special Forces" which is put out as a srecruiting tool by the US military, and can be downloaded here: http://www.americasarmy.com/ [americasarmy.com]

AA:SF is great fun, and Linux and Mac clients are on the official site as well. The graphical quality on most missions is not as good as HL2, but still decent nonetheless.

Re:AA:SF is free and fun (2, Funny)

pavel_987 (839726) | more than 9 years ago | (#11375968)

I remember the good 'ol days of AA. (only 3 years ago for me)

I really loved that game. But in my opinion they committed such an atrocity that I couldn't play it any longer. They censored the word "camping".
Surprisingly it took me a couple of weeks to figure this out, but once I did I stopped playing the game immediatly. No true hardcore gamer will stand for this.
At heart I guess I always knew that this was just America's propaganda and attempt to entice the youth to join the army. But I never expected them to go this far.

Excelent game, based on quake TF. Diferent classes that were supoused to have diferent speeds in game, but with the bunny hopping stuff all of them can move at the same (ultra)speed, that's sad. No need for recons, the hwguy's can mode at their speed ...

Re:Bunny heaven is back (1)

That is good! But gren jumping should be capped too, since most people start the bunny jumping with a gren jump... I think its ok rocket jump/gren jump, but once they hit the floor, the speed should be capped.

both ET and the patches are on the id FTP, and about all of the usual download sites (and plenty others too). Try activision's rtcw site [activision.com] , and click the Enemy Territory tab at the top, there are several mirrors for both ET and the patch listed there.

A better (IMO) list of mirrors for ETF is here at PlanetETF [planetetf.com] , also including the torrents which have been posted already.

ET is about 260mb, and ETF is just over 200mb. Not an awful lot to download for essentially two completely free multiplayer FPS games.

But it being a Wiki, it was quickly reverted to the original content :)

Re:Gross (-1)

I see a rather large and disturbing picture of the female anatomy right now.

Seems like wikipedia needs to get a little more serious about policing their articles. Otherwise, they might find themselves added to corpoarte and educational censoring filters for porno.

Re:Gross (0)

rekenner (849871) | more than 9 years ago | (#11376505)

This is the nature of a wiki, though. Wikis aren't "policed" except by peer reivew, which is the entire point OF wikis.

Re:Gross (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11376993)

So, wikipedia is the site that says it's better than Britannica, and I should use them as a reference?

Boy I would love for my kids to see that current entry. It would be even better if they used wikipedia for a reference in their schoolwork, and the teacher decided to check the reference and found that vagina instead.

Re:Gross (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11377249)

Thats totally incorrect.

Wikipedia has a team of administrators who go around to make sure everything is in order and has the power to block IP addresses, usernames, etc.

If Wikipedia can't get its act together, they WILL eventually become blocked in lots of places. Hell, I bet it wouldn't be hard just to intentionally vandalize a wiki page and submit it to a filtering company or your company's filter administrator to get it blocked. I've seen Wiki pages vandalized for weeks at a time, so I know this isn't far-fetched.

Wikipediadot (3, Insightful)

BlastM (663010) | more than 9 years ago | (#11376039)

Luckily someone managed to revert [wikipedia.org] the Wikipedia article before too many people saw it.

Perhaps before posting a story with a link to a Wikipedia article, the Slashdot editors could e-mail the Wikipeople to place a temporary lock on the mentioned article. That would be the best compromise between allowing anonymous, open group collaboration whilst countering the trolls.

As the great philosopher John Gabriel theorises [penny-arcade.com] , the large audience and relative anonymity of the internet can make good people do bad things.

Re:Wikipediadot (-1)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11376254)

Sounds like a great idea, Hitler.

Re:Wikipediadot (1)

Spy Hunter (317220) | more than 9 years ago | (#11377123)

The easier fix is to edit the article but not change anything, then link to the version in the page history. The page history can't be edited, so the link is permanent. OTOH, this goes against the Wiki spirit, because this would discourage Slashdot visitors from improving the page as well. (the edit link would be gone, and improvements to the current version wouldn't show up on Slashdot).

Re:Wikipediadot (1)

jeffdsimpson (737989) | more than 9 years ago | (#11377510)

Actually the edit link is still there and if you edit the old version, it becomes the current version. Wikipedia is set up this was so as to make it easy to revert vandalism.

ET, the free game platform? (4, Insightful)

ultrabot (200914) | more than 9 years ago | (#11375957)

With this and True Combat: Elite (very playable even if still at testing stage), it appears that ET is the "sweet" platform to write mods to. The mod automatically gets the largest posible audience, including people who don't want to pay to play the mod and people who run Linux.

Not that ET itself is outdated, of course; it's still as addictive and as ass-kickin' as ever.

Re:ET, the free game platform? (1)

Re:ET, the free game platform? (1)

teh_dg (800496) | more than 9 years ago | (#11376470)

True. At least two people have offered to give it a go (IIRC, some guy from Aspyr in his free time, and an author of one of ET's biggest mods, ETPro), however either id or Activision isn't giving them the code they need in order to do it, which is kind of understandable since they'd need to give them all of it.

Re:ET, the free game platform? (1)

Jagasian (129329) | more than 9 years ago | (#11377127)

Actually, the original Quake would be that platform as it runs on old and new hardware, PCs, Macs, Linux, Solaris, Xbox, etc... You also get to play the real Team Fortress, as opposed to some clone.

Re:ET, the free game platform? (1)

syrion (744778) | more than 9 years ago | (#11377325)

The original Team Fortress was really a horrible hack. A great mod, yes, but a horrible hack anyway. Quake could barely handle some of the maps, like canalzon. It's also quite ugly without doing some serious engine customizations, and it's open to hacks and cheats. Furthermore, the Quake engine itself is clunky. I still play custom Quake maps, but there are some really bizarre problems: try strafing while moving forward, for example. I prefer TFC to ETF and Q3F, though. It just feels more professional--and it's by the people who created Team Fortress to begin with.

That's great. (0)

SnowCrashed (778322) | more than 9 years ago | (#11376156)

Although ET is free and this mod looks pretty cool (the game is damn fun on it's own anyway), I've always hated Quake 3's netcode. Now, granted I'm usually playing it on dial-up, but it's the only FPS engine doesn't ever seem to run playably. I ping around 220 in most games, and that's perfectly fine to me, but with Q3 based games I stay above 300 AND I get the connection problem icon in the upper corner 90% of the time.

Re:Netcode, ughh (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11376338)

Re:Netcode, ughh (1)

peeon (743159) | more than 9 years ago | (#11376357)

I would not necessarily say quake 3 netcode is the problem. Call of Duty is based off the same netcode and my lag is not extreme as wolf:et. CoD is playable, while Wolf:ET is not. Wolf:ET only game that gets major lag through dialup even if you change your settings to 56k and decrease the 'rate' to '1000'. I think the punkbuster client might be the issue, but I don't know.

Q3 has the finest netcode of any game I've played. Granted it's more friendly towards broadband connections, but it's the only game you can confidently snipe with the railgun at a moving target two pixels wide at the other end of the map.

As for UTxxxx's netcode, all I can say is that it's very suspect at times which is a shame as they are all good games, even the best players moan about the netcode and how they missed what they thought was a sure shot.

I got ETF from fileshack.com. There is currently no line. I was expecting to wait for hours in the queue, and my wait time was 20 seconds.

Looks like the server got Slashfragged.

are available there http://www.etfgame.com/shots/ [etfgame.com] for the classes http://www.etfgame.com/shots/classes/index.shtml [etfgame.com] , weapons http://www.etfgame.com/shots/weapons/index.shtml [etfgame.com] , and levels http://www.etfgame.com/shots/levels/index.shtml [etfgame.com] .

It looks like etfgame.com took these links off of the homepage, probably because they're serving the 200MB mod as well.

What better time to (1)

plug an upcoming mappack in the making ;

I am currently working on a selection of maps, to be used in conjunction with ETF which focuses on several minigames instead of CTF/duel and is meant for small playerloads (2-4 players) :

A quickish-thrown-together flash-vid showing off some of the maps can be found here : http://members.lycos.co.uk/nosoup4u/ETF_Minigames_ Teaser.htm [lycos.co.uk]

Hopefully this gets modded up, but if you don't have the Enemy Territory, here's a link to id's tracker:

FYI Windows users want WolfET and ET Patch 1.02.

Linux is labelled much better (et linux 2.56).
