The Lost 1984 Mac Video

michael posted more than 9 years ago | from the chariots-of-fire dept.

Desktops (Apple) 636

An anonymous reader writes "Never seen video footage of the introduction of the Macintosh in January 1984 was published for the first time on the Internet today. Renowned Mac user Scott Knaster kept that Betamax video tape for 21 years, and German media agency TextLab has unearthed this only surviving video tape of the launch." They could probably use more mirrors for the 22MB movie.

Saying "They could probably use more mirrors for the 22MB movie." as you post it to Slashdot's frontpage mid-day is like walking up to a guy after a fight, knifing him in the stomach and saying "You could probably use more bandages for your wounds."

Quality from day one.

Re:Betamax? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11460376)

I woudn't say the video was preserved on Betamax tape, but rather the Betamax tape itself was preserved.

Saying the video was preserved on Betamax would be saying the video was transferred to Betamax specifically for preservation.

I highly doubt this was the case, as Betamax was most likely one of the original formats.

DarthBart (640519) | more than 9 years ago | (#11460388)

Betamax doesn't suck? And it actually uses all 525 scan lines of NTSC video, whereas VHS uses half that?

Re:Betamax? (1)

itsnotthenetwork (634970) | more than 9 years ago | (#11460471)

Scan lines are not the same things as line of resolution.

Re:Betamax? (2, Informative)

Cowclops (630818) | more than 9 years ago | (#11460473)

525 scan lines = vertical. VHS very much uses all of it. Betamax has slightly more horizontal bandwidth than VHS, but its not night an day.

Lost video content.... (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11460219)

The lost video featured the Mac's amazing advance of having to jam a bent paperclip in a hole to eject a floppy instead of using an eject button/lever. The poor saps using Commodores had to suffer with this much-harder-to-use mechanism until Apple invented the much better clip-in-hole method.

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11460477)

' How about choosing the menu-item that says "eject"? '

That is much less intuitive than just ejecting. Besides, if it really worked, there would not be a paperclip hole (and piles of paperclips on the tables in the old Mac "Classic" labs).

A pinhole is easier to use than a large eject button only in the mind of the Apple fanboy who can't admit that Apple was capable of making design goofs.

PC competition for the Mini-MAC? (-1, Redundant)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11460263)

When MAC announced their "Mini", it caught my eye. Wanting to buy/build a small computer for my already cramped breakfast bar, I started pricing out similar hardware. The results startled me. Most of the configurations I found were more than the humble US$499 of the "Mini", often much more. To match price I had to configure with a much bigger shuttle-style case.

My question is this. What PCs are currently on the market to compete with this? When my wife asks for the "cute little MAC", what real computer can I buy instead?
