Family Guy Video Game in the Works

Zonk posted more than 9 years ago | from the Omnipotence.-Gotta-get-me-some-of-that. dept.

Television 274

antifoidulus writes "According to Businesswire there is a Family Guy video game in the works, set to hit the street sometime next year. The game is being developed by Take-Two Interactive. The press releases contains only a few scant details, but the game will be a 3rd person action game that puts you in control of various members of the once cancelled animated family." From the article: "The massive licensing and merchandising program on tap will coincide with the new series launch for Family Guy on May 1st, and is expected to be one of the company's largest product blitzes to date."

Bah, that wasn't flamebait.

I find Family Guy to be way overrated. Its like Simpsons, but on speed or something. Once in a while, its funny, but they really over do it.

Re:Ugh (1)

gustgr (695173) | more than 9 years ago | (#11575082)

Family Guy has a more subtle and agressive humor that you can't find in Simpsons. They make fun Sex, Racism and Intolerance... it is freaking hilarius.

Re:Ugh (1)

ishmalius (153450) | more than 9 years ago | (#11575137)

I must agree. The humor is too "in your face," with no subtleties at all. It doesn't seem to expect much intelligence of the viewer. The writers of the Simpsons, on the other hand, seem able to express big thoughts with small words, much like e.e. cummings.

Re:Ugh (1)

I've heard this before. Often from some of the same people who liked the Simpsons better "before". (Obviously I do not know if you personally are in the second camp) The thing is the Family Guy style is almost exactly that of the Simpsons from the "before" time. Meh.

What the hell are u talking about. Family guy is way better than the simpsons and it has always been. Family guy has been off the air for a while now and most fans have seen every show, yet everyone I talk to still really enjoys it. If I see a repeat of the simpsons I just change the hannel but somehow Family Guy is diferent. It is one of those very rare showsthat you can watch over and over again and almost never get sick of. Simpsons H&R - Lame (0, Troll)

AtariAmarok (451306) | more than 9 years ago | (#11574910)

I tried for quite some time to get that to recognize a standard multi-button USB joystick (one that no other games have a problem with), and when I finally got it going, it never worked well: it assigned motions/clicks to the wrong keys and for some of them it would not let me change them.

The manual said to go to a help file for problems, but such a file was not found in the set of disks.

Re:This could go either way... (1, Insightful)

athakur999 (44340) | more than 9 years ago | (#11574938)

I'm leaning towards lame myself. The Simpsons has a very rich background with tons of locations and characters that the Hit and Run game could draw on to make a neat 3rd person game.

Family Guy doesn't really have all that much to draw on. I'm thinking it's gonna be more "a 3rd person game with Family Guy characters" rather than a "Family Guy game".

Never know though. Hit and Run was a good game but the ones before it weren't exactly stellar.

About a year ago if i had said the FCC would be censoring cartoon butts you would have laughed and said "the FCC doesn't do that", next year the FCC will regulating video games and the year after that they will be regulating what you say in public..

Re:FCC? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11575079)

The FCC didn't censor anything. Fox made a decision to change that by themselves. Granted, they said it was to forego any possible wrath from the FFC, but I'd put money on it that some Fox exec just is a little angry because they had to bring back another good show that they had canceled.

Re:FCC? (1)

mzwaterski (802371) | more than 9 years ago | (#11575130)

Do you even know what you are talking about? FCC stands for Federal Communications Commission. Until video games start being broadcast via "interstate and international ... radio, television, wire, satellite and cable" broadcasts I don't really see the FCC saying anything about them.

Quotes from http://www.fcc.gov/aboutus.html [fcc.gov]

Re:FCC? (0, Flamebait)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11575134)

Well, what about the liberals who are ALREADY regulating what you can say in public? If i say that men are better than women at ANYTHING, it's hate speech. Or one race is better at something than another... Let us not forget who is behind the whole politcally correct speech movement... cause it damn sure isn't the FCC... it's liberals like you who think it's better to censor ideas and thoughts than it is to censor television.

Re:FCC? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11574969)

Those broadcast standards have been in place since the beginning, it's not a single-party-only thing, nor is it a recent addition.

Re:FCC? (0, Offtopic)

eln (21727) | more than 9 years ago | (#11575055)

The broadcast standards are againt indecency, which is defined as whatever society as a whole feels is indecent. So, the broadcast standards change over time as society changes. It's groups on the religious right that are behind the current trend to push the standards to almost farcical proportions.

Now, you could say that religious fanatacism is to blame, and not the Republican party, but unfortunately it seems the Republican party has been overrun with religious fanaticism over the past 10 years.

Nothing bugs me quite like a video game based on a tvshow/movie that uses the same characters but different voices.

"The talented voice cast includes: Seth MacFarlane (as Peter Griffin, Brian Griffin, Stewie Griffin and more), Alex Borstein (as Lois Griffin), Seth Green (as Chris Griffin), and Mila Kunis (as Meg Griffin)."

According to that statement it appears they will use the regular people for the voices! Excellent.

Maybe the voices will be more believable than in Simspsons: Hit and Run. Heck, maybe it'll be a better game overall... but I doubt it. Games made after TV/Movies are usually fun for a while, but not for extended amounts of time (for me, anyway).

This kind of thing (animated series) doesn't need a video game, because it's GREAT the way it is. A video game, which who knows how seriously it will be taken (its production, not its content), is just cheapening the brand for true fans, ESPECIALLY if the game sucks.

Hey, when Fox announced that they were going to start re-showing Family Guy, I wondered how they were going to kill it the second time. There's no way Fox would give a real second chance to a show they already decided to kill.

They took a real black eye on Family Guy once it was evident that it really was popular and that they could have done real well with it. They have to do something to "prove" that it really was worthy of being canceled, and reviving it only to beat it into a bloody pulp sounds like a Fox-worthy move.

Expect Fox to do everything in their power to prove that they really were, in fact, correct in canceling Family Guy in the first place. This video game is going to suck, hard.

2. Hit & Run.I was actively playing this game until I got Katamari damacy(and then burnout 3).

They really could have gone further with H&R. With over 16 seasons of content, the missions ended up being "go from a to b". Congradulations, you just re-created Smuggler's Run in Springfield.

Whether it be minor or major characters, they could have fleshed out the missions to go beyond driving and stuff it full of fun references. How come no Kent Brockman on the radio whilst driving? Thankfully it only cost me $20, as it is no Grand Theft Auto.

I always thought it would be cool to have a Sims2 version with all of the Simpsons characters in Springfield. To bad Family Guy doesn't have more characters.
