Apple Updates iPod

CmdrTaco posted more than 9 years ago | from the lookit-the-pretty-colors dept.

Media (Apple) 689

TheRaven64 writes "Apple seems to have quietly updated the iPod Photo and iPod Mini lines. The Mini now comes in 4GB and 6GB flavours, priced at $199 and $249 respectively. The iPod Photo now comes in a 30GB flavour for $349 - only $50 more than the 20GB iPod with a mono screen and shorter battery life."

Re:When will they update the firmware for old iPod (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11755674)

I believe that technically the shuffle songs feature has always been on the main menue, If you select browse, and press play (at least on my 2nd gen ipod) it plays random songs.

Re:When will they update the firmware for old iPod (2, Interesting)

SilentChris (452960) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755733)

Well, you see, it's ridiculously complicated to add a Shuffle feature to the menu. I mean, it would've required rewriting 2 pointers.

Actually, I was pretty peeved when I bought an iPod, they shipped a new model a month later and didn't think to add this simple hack. And before you say "Just buy another iPod", no. No thank you. This is software.

A good example of what to do is Blizzard. Every time they release new features its gets updated up and down the board. With the Warcraft 3 Expansion they gave similar functionality to the original game in a patch (without the new units). It wouldn't have killed Apple to do the same.

Firmware update ! (4, Informative)

mirko (198274) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755642)

There are new firmwares [apple.com] available for most iPods, they will bring new menu functionality and "better" iTunes connectivity:

iPod Updater 2005-02-22 includes new iPod mini Software 1.3 for iPod mini, new iPod Software 2.3 for iPod with dock connector, new iPod shuffle Software 1.1 for iPod shuffle, and new iPod Software 1.5 for iPod with touch wheel or scroll wheel. iPod Updater 2005-02-22 contains the same software versions as iPod Updater 2005-01-11 for all other iPod models.

Download and install the iPod Updater then connect your iPod shuffle, iPod, iPod photo or iPod mini to your computer. The iPod Updater will automatically determine if an update is required.

What's New in iPod Updater 2005-02-22 iPod shuffle Software 1.1 for iPod shuffle
  • Support for iPod shuffle Battery Pack
  • Increased software stability
iPod mini Software 1.3 for iPod mini

iPod Software 2.3 for iPod with dock connector
  • Shuffle Songs selection in Main Menu
  • Music menu item in Main Menu
  • Support for iTunes 4.7 and later
iPod Software 1.5 for iPod with touch wheel or scroll wheel
  • Shuffle Songs selection in Main Menu
  • Music menu item in Main Menu
  • Support for iTunes 4.7 and later

ites (600337) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755660)

My main question is: how long before Apple eitehr (a) reintroduce a PDA or (b) morph the iPod into one?

It would, I believe, take the market from PalmSpringSourceOne but also a large chunk of the consumer Windows PDA market (the business market being firmly Outlocked into place).

Re:Apart from the slashvertising... (1)

Rude Turnip (49495) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755742)

"or (b) morph the iPod into one?"

You can already syncronize your iCal entries and have reminders come up on your iPod's screen.

For Apple to come out with a full PDA, I think they're going to wait until the technology is good enough for them to come out with something much sturdier than an iPod due to all the features that PDAs have...think thin slab of aluminum with a bright screen protected by polycarbonate.

iPod Photo (4, Insightful)

avalys (221114) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755671)

I still have no idea what the purpose of the iPod Photo is. Sure, the better battery life and color screen are nice, but who really cares about carrying their photos around with them for viewing on a 1.5-inch screen? Hell, they could just lug their digital camera with them, and get mostly the same functionality...plus a camera!

Anyone know what the sales figures are like?

Re:iPod Photo (2, Interesting)

thenerd (3254) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755723)

But my digital camera can't store 60Gb, so I can't store all my old photos on it.

Re:iPod Photo (2)

ragingtory (833483) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755741)

You can take the Ipod and hook it up to a TV if I recall... so you can bring your photos with you to a friend's place, plug in the Ipod, and show them your latest photos from your Europe vacation. I also like the new $30 addon to hook up a digital cameara to your Ipod to download photos. Although flash cards are getting cheaper and cheaper - this is a nice way to get some more storage for your photos

Re:iPod Photo (1, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11755747)

The point is that you ALWAYS have your iPod with you, and most people don't carry a camera all the time. You carry the camera when you want to take pictures, but it's fun to always have your photos available for playback. Is it a killer feature? No. Is it nice to have? Definitely. Especially since it doesn't get in the way of the music playback, which is what you spend the money for.

iPod Photo also has TV-out, so that's an option if you hate the small screen. And the color screen is also used for album art, to enhance your music experience.

Re:iPod Photo (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11755751)

There's going to be an Apple digital camera upload functionality thingy in March. So you can use the iPod as storage for your digital camera, so you don't need to buy massive amounts of storage for your camera.

Does a digital camera play music?

Re:iPod Photo (2, Interesting)

Momoru (837801) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755786)

I thought the iPod photo was useless too until now, when they added the functionality to download from your digital camera to it. It's also useful for being able to outsnob the people who own monochrome ipods, as iPod photo has a fancy color display.

Re:iPod Photo (2, Informative)

A Drake Man (809441) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755803)

Well, are there any cameras that I can play music/store addresses/view calendar/play solitaire on? (Well there is MAME [mame.net] for Digita cameras :)

I think it's just to have, really. The color screen does look a LOT better under different light situations than the normal LCD, plus, at a higher resolution it's even more readable. You could say that they decided to put photos on it as a result of going to a more readable screen instead of the other way around. PLUS, if you're giving a presentation and you're having problems with your other equipment, you can always fall back on your iPod photo.

Re:iPod Photo (4, Insightful)

bobdinkel (530885) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755820)

I personally don't care about slideshows and such. But I really like that the album cover can be displayed while the song is playing. It may seem like a very small thing, but to someone as anal about their music collection as I am, this is very appealing.

That being said, it ain't appealing enough for me to drop $449 to upgrade my iPod.

My guess is that this is just an intermediate step towards some greater functionality. Like video or broader PDA functionality.

But what about ... (1)

SengirV (203400) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755672)

The color screen for the mini that ALL the rumor mills were pushing?

Re:But what about ... (1)

A Drake Man (809441) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755836)

Umm, it was a rumor? :)

Actually, it IS a color screen...as long as you only want two colors... and no choice as to what those colors are (when the light's on, it like a bright blue and a darker blue and a few "shades" of blue so you get BONUS colors!!)

18h battery life (4, Informative)

moonbender (547943) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755679)

The Slashdot blurb missed one of the significant upgrades: the battery life in both iPod mini is now a lot better. The original iPod mini only lasted about 8 hours (according to Apple [archive.org]), the new one supposedly lasts 18. And if that turns out to be exaggerated, even 15 hours would be a very good battery lifetime for that kind of device. I wonder how they've done that - the weight hasn't increased, so it's probably not simply a battery twice as big.

Re:18h battery life (3, Informative)

rj4x (689285) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755770)

the new one supposedly lasts 18. And if that turns out to be exaggerated, even 15 hours would be a very good battery lifetime

apple tends to underestimate battery life, not the other way 'round. The original mini was billed as having 8 hrs of life, but various tests showed some would consistently last 9 or 10 hrs. so if apple claims 18, i wouldn't be surprised to see 20 or so hours of actual playback.

iPod Photo over iPod (3, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11755690)

I'm probably in the minority here but I think that the iPod photo is overkill. The iPod is an excellent, simply designed music player. Bolting on photo displaying is a bit pointless. Not only is the screen still too small to be practical, even for "quick viewing", I tend to keep my iPod in my pocket all the time. Colour screens are not necessary.

Re:iPod Photo over iPod (2, Informative)

TheKidWho (705796) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755752)

Ahh but apple also introduced this
Photo Accesory [macrumors.com]

For people into digital photography, a 60gb iPod Photo + a digital camera is perfect when you are on the go and need to store all your pictures.

Ohh and before you ask, whats so different about this one then the other accessories. Well this one lets you check out the pictures on the iPod itself while the other accessories don't.

Skimping on accessories (4, Insightful)

Synesthesiatic (679680) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755703)

It seems to be the iPod way these days, but part of the price reductions come from fewer pack-in accessories. Apple did the same thing last year with the price cut on the 20 GB 4G.

iPod minis no longer include an AC charger, and the iPod photos no longer include a dock, carrying case, or AV cable. Apparently they'll have USB host support with an accessory though, and you'll be able to download and view photos right from your camera.

But most shocking of all to the "faithful" is the lack of a firewire cable with any iPod. It's optional across the board. Apple sold Macs with USB 1 and Firewire very recently, so they're essentially screwing over their fans. There's already a petition [petitiononline.com] to but the cable back in the box. And you don't want to piss of a Mac fanatic!

I'm kinda disappointed with the lack of Bluetooth, though. It'd be nice to have the music pause when a call comes in on my T616, and maybe allow the headphones to double as a headset. iTunes already pauses the music for me courtesy of Salling Clicker.

Re:Skimping on accessories (1)

OhPlz (168413) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755833)

I bought a 4th gen iPod 40GB about a week ago that had a dock, USB cable, firewire cable and AC plug adapter thing that I haven't used.

Is it that Apple sells a bare-bones unit for cheap plus a dock+cables version for a bit more or that there is no longer any choice at all and there's just a bare-bones?

Re:Skimping on accessories (1)

generic-man (33649) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755845)

A Firewire cable is $20 at Apple's store (or less on eBay [ebay.com]) and an AC adapter is $30. With these two accessories added back to the price of a 4 GB iPod mini, the iPod mini costs exactly the same as it did before.

The lack of an AC charger is really lame on Apple's part. It assumes that you have a laptop to bring with you everywhere you go. I thought the point of a portable music player was to bring your music with you wherever you went so you wouldn't need a laptop!

In years of watching Apple make moves, this one seems to be one of the most insightful in terms of keeping marketshare. Although the competitors do not have the "cool" factor of the iPod, for once Apple seems fully aware that the competition is there, and they can not get by by merely producing superior technology.

This time, they have realized that in order to keep this technology at the center of the business model, they must continue to innovate.

With storage devices becoming smaller and smaller, they must continue to breakthrough with the bleeding edge technology. The iPod technology is simple enough that staying on the bleeding edge makes perfect sense. I sense that they've got this one nailed and are not letting go.

Cell phones
music subscription services
mRobe et al

All pose a significant risk to the long term future of the iPod.

They need to stay bleeding edge to get all the cash they can, and now, because odds are it's not going to be there tomorrow.

Where's the 40GB ipod? (1)

gadlaw (562280) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755720)

Darn freaking blast it. I was just getting ready to buy one of those. Is there something wrong with the 40GB model?

Yes. It would be too similar to the low-end photo. Bigger capacity but fewer features. No clear delineation as to which is "best". Now if you want more than the 20, you get the 30. Simple.

There is a 40G iPod photo in their special deals section. Since the site is session based, I can't give you a direct link.

iPod Camera Connecter? (5, Interesting)

SkipRosebaugh (50138) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755774)

Reuters has a story on this which adds:
Apple also introduced an iPod Camera Connector for about $30, that lets users link their digital camera to an iPod photo model -- which has a built-in color screen. Users can then transfer snapshots over to the iPod, where they can be viewed.

Unfortunately, I can't find this item anywhere on Apple's site. Anyone else have any luck?

Accessories for New Photo Models? (1)

leafsfanatic (621492) | more than 9 years ago | (#11755778)

Ordered my 30Gb iPod Photo as soon as I got to work. Anyone know if existing accessories will work with new iPod photo models (i.e. Belkin's iTrip).

Might I ask why you were so eager to get one? Did it replace an old one that no longer worked or have you been waiting for the next line to come out?

I have been watching iPods for a few generations, waiting for all the features I wanted to hit a certain price point. For $400CAD (with my educational discount) for 30Gb and a colour screen, I couldn't pass it up.

Disk compression (1, Insightful)

Why has nobody come up with disc compression software for the Ipod? Methinks that would be a huge benefit to the iPod legions.

I just bought a 20Gig monochrome iPod for my wife. I would have gladly paid the extra $50 for better battery life and color
