Ask mc chris

CmdrTaco posted more than 8 years ago | from the his-backpack-doesn't-actually-have-jets dept.

Music 646

Many of you are no doubt familiar with the works of mc chris. He's probably most well known as the high pitched rapper on the track 'Fett's Vette' that you probably have an MP3 of somewhere. In addition to several highly entertaing albums, he's also the voice of MC Pee Pants (Aqua Teen Hunger Force) and Hesh (Sealab 2021). He's now touring, but you better already have tickets since he sold out his first 8 shows (including my local venue. The wife is very unhappy with me for not getting tickets in time). He'll also be performing at the Penny Arcade Expo later this year. This is your chance to ask him those burning questions. Standard Slashdot interview rules apply: Ask here, and we'll pick from the best of them and then wait patiently for Chris to bless us with his words.

Sorry! There are no comments related to the filter you selected.

M is for Mouthy
C is for C... well, you get the idea.

MCs are people who generally lack the intelligence or discipline to learn to play an instrument, or even learn to sing, as anyone who's ever listened to a pirate radio station or a Public Enemy CD will testify (is Flavor Flav available for childrens parties yet?)

Sorry, never heard of him. His site requires Flash, too, so I'm even less likely now.

Taco, don't be such a cheapskate, go buy tickets from a scalper.

I had it good when I lived in Michigan, I could buy tickets, actual tickets over the phone or internet for shows in Detroit, Pine Knob, etc without much trouble. If I had to pay a scalper it was only a 100% markup.

Now I live in Santa Cruz and tickets to even the drunks on Pacific avenue sell out in seconds. Scalpers will happily take $500 for a ticket that cost them $30 and they'll get it.

I rely on local bands now. Support your local musicians before they're replaced by DJ's and Karoke.

I first saw ATHF, as a collection of some mpg video a friend had. I thought it was some kind of underground thing, and I thought it was pretty funny. Later I realized it's in syndication and is aired on mainstream cable cartoon channels. I stopped caring at that point.

Why geek rap? (1, Interesting)

booyah (28487) | more than 8 years ago | (#11813769)

I know this will probably be modded down, but why geek rap? If your going to work in the medium, why go after such a small sub sector? Wouldnt you be able to make it way richer as a "white boy rapper" (assuming here, not a follower personally) talking about your hard upbringing, or busting caps in folks ass?

Your Real Voice? (4, Interesting)

Laebshade (643478) | more than 8 years ago | (#11813771)

I know some voice actors, for example, use their natural voices for cartoon characters (Bugs Bunny, etc.). When you rapped, as MC Pee Pants (or Sir Loin) for ATHF, was that your natural voice? If not, can you post a clip of your real voice?

Re:Your Real Voice? (3, Insightful)

lukewarmfusion (726141) | more than 8 years ago | (#11813866)

I recognize the same voice as both Hesh and on ATHF.

I'm not impressed by his character work or rapping at all. Maybe I'm a minority with this opinion, but there are thousands of really talented people out there in these fields - and he's not one of them.

After reading through some of the current threads I have to say one thing... Slashdot nerds are a different type of nerd than the rest of us. I've known about mc chris for well over 4 years now. Of course most slashdot geeks would never dream about watching something like Adult Swim(where his songs debuted), It's probably too low brow for them.

But anyways, Keep on making music mc and plan some more shows in NJ!

The fact that this story has been overwhelmed by "omg who is this guy and why should I care" posts is indicative of an aging Slashdot readership, I think. Props to Malda for trying, but I think he'd get more productive replies if he did "Ask the guy that invented Metamucil".

Not just a rapper, but a "high pitched" one. I would probably rather listen to finger-nails on a chalk board. Truthfully, I find very, very little of rap music even remotely tolerable. Somehow I have a hard time seeing a string of obsenities and verbal abuse as "art", which seems to be what most of the rappers are all about.

mc, love your stuff!

How about some more computer raps? "Ratz" and "Boy's dont cry" are the closest I've heard of your work to a computer-related song, any chance of getting some Linux-related rhymes? :)

When are you going to do a duet with Del the funky homosapien?

If presented with an actual musical instrument... (4, Interesting)

could you play it?
Do you feel that your work edifies your audience? How so?
In your opinion, how does hip-hop differentiate between characterizing a problem, with an eye towards debugging, and glorifying the problem?
Now, you're clearly a big star, or you wouldn't be on /., so you've made money (is there another metric?): will you do anything unexpected? Challenging? The first rap symphony?

How much of the skits on "Knowing is half the hastle" is based on your high school years or what you imagined happening? Because that is pretty raw stuff. (You write great stuff, keep it up!)

I agree.. (1)

I agree with the general consensus.. although I somewhat like some of mc chris's stuff .. and yeah he does geek rap.. really.. should he be here?

What are the motives for asking him questions? Seriously..

Real Question. (2, Interesting)

Since i see an asston of moronic questions, i'll ask a reasonable one.

Did you get to spend much time with the late Harry Goz? (Harry [imdb.com] was Captain Murphy on Sealab, amongst many other things). What are your thoughts on him? Will we see more work with AdultSwim in the future?

Never heard of him... (0, Offtopic)

Which Show Was Your Favorite So Far? (1)

I got the unbelievable opportunity to see you in Baltimore, and the show was phenomenal. You were also just a really nice guy and treated your fans as equals and peers after the show, which was very refreshing and really cool.

So which show was your favorite so far? Any hilarious foul-ups or unmitigated disasters so far :)? Or was everything as smooth as the show @ the Ottobar in B-more?
