Ico Sequel Info

Zonk posted more than 9 years ago | from the watch-out-for-shadow-thingies dept.

PlayStation (Games) 35

Ico was one of the original innovative games for the Playstation 2, and the sequel is finally nearing its release date. Games.Kikizo.com (via Blues) has an interview, screenshots, and details on the upcoming title. From the article: "There's a young man on a horse, with a girl. You can see that she's unconscious, and this is because she has lost her soul. He takes her to a temple-like area that exists at World's End. He is trying to revive her and recover her soul. In order to do that, he has to defeat the Colossi."

Change of story? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12014920)

I thought the main character in this one was a female who battled the giant? I believe the game was assumed to be titled Nico, or something similar.
Are they making two seperate games and I'm getting them confused?

Either way, I hope this is good. It's a pity it took them so long to make a second game for this.

Re:Change of story? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12015510)

Waaaaaay back when it was REALLY a sequel to Ico, it was called Nico, and you were probably right. Since then, the only real tie to Ico left after numerous story changes and other things is that "its made by the same people and looks stunning".

Re:Change of story? (3, Informative)

easychord (671421) | more than 9 years ago | (#12016260)

The working title is Nico, apparently it's a clever play on words in japanese. Sort of like Driv3r only better. It isn't actually a sequel so that name wouldn't make sense for the finished game.

The lead character was never female. The japanese name is Wanda and the Collosus. Wanda is a female name but it's actually short for Wanderer, japanese stylee. So far the only official english title for the game is Shadow of the Colossus.

fixmyship (802069) | more than 9 years ago | (#12016749)

"Ni" means two in japanese. So, N(Ico).

Re:Change of story? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12016756)

The play on words:

"Ico" was the name of the first game.

"Nico" is the codename for the second game.

In the japanese counting system, one of the ways you pronounce the character for the number 2 is "Ni" (as in, the Knights Who Say Ni). Similarly, "I" is the first syllable for the character for the number 1.

So: "Ico" was 1-co, and "Nico" is 2-co.

Another thing to note is that "-ko" is a female suffix. In the same vein how western culture associates "-a" and "-o" suffixes to ascribe gender attributes to a term. Since they're using a velar plosive with "-co" one could presume the game designers are playing with words. The names could mean "Miss One" and "Miss Two".

Should there be another branch creating a tryptich, the codename might be "sanco".

What an annoying site. Glad I could see some screens of this possibly-great game there, but I'm never going back.

Now, here's the start of the movie ... I see snow! White snow! And in the snow, I see ... a tree!
And by this tree, gentlemen, I see ... a dog!
And gentlemen, this dog goes up to the tree, and he piddles on it.

with much thanks to Monty Pythong

Is there a sad girl? We all know we can't have snow if there aren't sad girls involved.

Because she's lost her soul (2, Interesting)

I don't know about you guys, but I can't see whether or not people have souls, or have lost their souls. Did I miss the post of some righteous hack of some pair of goggles or something?

Re:Because she's lost her soul (1)

Ayaress (662020) | more than 9 years ago | (#12017415)

Well, I imagine the game has some shaman or wizard like character who can magically sense the presence (and, thus, lack of presence) of the soul in the person. Nearly all fatasy settings tie magic to the soul in some way so as to allow this sort of thing.

Looks pretty good (2, Interesting)

TheGuano (851573) | more than 9 years ago | (#12015143)

I'm always amazed at the things good developers are able to squeeze out of "old" consoles. The game somehow keeps the idyllic Ico feel (complete with subtle lens flares and "high dynamic range" lighting) yet looks a lot more action-packed than the original's overly puzzle/jumping based maze-running.

Here's a game that could definitely use the visual booster shot a next-gen console could offer.

You say that like it's a good thing. Am I the only one that's tired of every game being "action-packed"? Is it wrong to want to play a visually stunning game that you use more of your brain to play than your lightning fast reflexes?

Re:Looks pretty good (3, Informative)

TheGuano (851573) | more than 9 years ago | (#12015743)

Not bad at all. But I would like to see the franchise survive and expand, and since the first one flopped so badly (to my surprise), I'm not averse to it taking a chance and changing the formula a bit to attract new fans.

Cool! (2, Interesting)

blueZhift (652272) | more than 9 years ago | (#12015278)

I was recently reading about Ico and its creator in Power Up and then went out and was lucky enough to find a used copy is pretty good condition really cheap. I haven't finished Ico yet (too much time in Vana'diel), but I'm glad to hear that something new from the same creative team is coming out. Ico was/is one of the more creative titles to come out over the last several years. Unfortunately the really interesting titles don't always sell well upon release. But with all of same ol' games coming out over and over on the new consoles, I think many gamers are starving for and are now willing to try something different.

I'm not sure the policy here on advertising within a post so consider this a suggestion. If you want the original game, a certain online bookstore was offering it for $16.99 (Canadian). Mine arrived in the mail today.

I played through it again a few weekends ago. It only takes about 5 or 6 hours. Maybe 10 the first time through...

ICO is a work of art. I highly recommend a few hours off of the grind to finish it. It's quite amazing.

BTW, what server are you on? Sylph here...

I think I'll try to finish the game on Friday while the kids are out! Heh, heh, heh!

Oh yeah, I'm on Shiva. My characters are not 1337, but I have spent a lot of time exploring the world and generally hangin out.

black mariah (654971) | more than 9 years ago | (#12015663)

The first Ico was total shite. A blurry, ugly, unfun mess of a game. Innovative? Yeah, it certainly was. It was the first game to make my eyes bleed from all the fucking fog and blur. It was released to mediocre reviews (rightly so) and quickly disappeared from view because it just wasn't that great. All of a sudden everyone's pants are exploding for this game... WTF? It's like a reverse of Tohshinden. "Oh, this game is the greatest ever! It's so pretty! Yay for Tohshinden!" A year later "Yeah, Tohshinden sucked hard. And it's ugly. And controls like shit."

Re:Who cares? (4, Insightful)

thryllkill (52874) | more than 9 years ago | (#12016385)

Where the fuck were you? I remember well when ICO was released, and I remember just about every review said it was great! And if I recall correctly (and I do) not many people talked about its innovation, but rather its emotional appeal. The graphics, for the time, were amazing and clean, not cluttered like so many of its contemporaries. And blurriness? Did you even play Ico, or just watch the free streaming videos on Gamespot?

Everyone's pants are "exploding" because it was a truly great game that came in under a lot of radars because it didn't involve guns, or blood, or hoes.

Check yo'self foo... know what the fuck you're talking about next time.

My dear good sir, it DID in fact have a ho.

Re:Who cares? (0)

By "blurriness" the poster is probably referring to the texture blending/smoothing and the careful and effective use of motion blur throughout the game.

Ico was the reason I bought my PS2; I just had to give in to the impulse after reading the reviews which weren't mediocre as you remember (maybe the Frag-a-minute gang thought it sucked, but I don't read those type of reviews so I wouldn't know). Ico is still one of the best games for the PS2 IMO. I for one am looking forward eagerly to a sequel (as long as they don't turn it into an "action" game; any time I see that word as a description of a game now, I turn away and look elsewhere for my entertainment.)

Re:Who cares? (1)

praxis22 (681878) | more than 9 years ago | (#12034646)

I discovered ICO via metacritic, it was I believe the best scoring game thay had. Indeed over 30 of the 50 plus web reviews they have listed for this game gave it a score >=90/100 Giving it a score of 9.0 "Universal Acclaim" if that's a mediocre review, I really love to see a bad one. (I like reading bad reviews, sue me :) You can find the listing here [metacritic.com] and as for ugly and blurry...

I know, I know, "do not feed the troll" :)

Selling (1)

wongn (777209) | more than 9 years ago | (#12015693)

It's a shame that (at least in Britain) the original Ico didn't sell too well, though its release wasnt as wide spread as it could have been (I didn't pick it up until it appeared in Game's preowned bin...). I hope that they don't realise this and drop a European release :(. (I hope more so that sony don't drop the PSP release... which they edge nearer every week apparently).

Re:Selling (1)

easychord (671421) | more than 9 years ago | (#12016521)

Release is set for around October in Japan and Europe. The USA doesn't have a release date yet.

It would be a real shame if the PAL version of ICO didn't sell well enough to make it worth while. Unlike the Americans we actually got the finished game with better pathfinding for Yorda.

Who knows what the final sales figures were, or more importantly if particular games are profitable.

No I did not RTFA because I've been reading about this game for months. Anyways this is just an FYI Wanda vs. The Collosus or whatever they wanna call it now is not a sequel. It doesn't have anything to do with ICO other than the fact that it MAY take place in the same world. Just think about that so you don't miss out on a potentially excellent game just cuz ICO sucked.

Ico special edition? (1)

justforaday (560408) | more than 9 years ago | (#12023763)

In TFA the interviewer asks if Wanda will have a "special edition release" like Ico had. What's he referring to there? Is he calling the finished version that was released in Europe/Japan the "special edition"?

Re:Ico special edition? (2, Informative)

Ed_Moyse (171820) | more than 9 years ago | (#12026244)

I bought the special edition - it came with some beautiful pieces of art "inspired by the game". Of course I've not done anything with them and they currently languish inside the box, but still ... quite nice (especially since it was the same price as the normal edition)
