GTA3 and Vice City now Online Multiplayer

CmdrTaco posted more than 9 years ago | from the helluva-a-hack dept.

glengineer writes "A deep bow and an "I'm not worthy" to Kent Simon, at the University of Kentucky, Ed Lyons in London, and Chris McArthur in Canada who have made the dream come true for GTA fanatics like me - GTA3 and Vice City online multiplayer! Now I can streetrace and play Liberty City Survivor with real people, not just use the "crazy pedestrians" cheat. Rockstar would be nuts not to hire these guys. So, anyone up for a deathmatch? Meet me at the Malibu Club in Vice, or the construction site on Staunton Island."

This isn't new, and it's been covered on Slashdot at least 5 times (possibly more, but Slashdot's search sucks and they don't set it up right to allow Google to index everything.)

OK, so I'm off topic, probably flamebaiting and in effect contributing (in short measure) to the thing I'm complaining about, but there's nowhere else to vent my spleen on this one.

Slashdot posts dupes, so what? If you're not interested, either because it's a dupe or just beacuse you're plain not interested, then don't RTFA. Skip over it. Ignore it. Let it go...

What is *far* more irritating (to me) than dupes are the lame posts of smart arse tossers whining on about dupes and about how crap slashdot is. If you don't like it, fuck off and read something else. Is someone holding a gun to your head and forcing you to read it? Go make you own version or something do something a bit more constructive.

Bye, bye, karma!

Re:Welcome to 2003 (0, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12088241)

Will they give me a refund for my subscription? No, so until then, I'm going to complain that every dupe I've unfortunately paid for. One of the big promises of the subscription was that we could help them eliminate dupes. We do our part, but they don't do theirs.

Re:Welcome to 2003 (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12088263)

"Don't like it, don't read it" is kind of a defeatist position to take, don't you think? Wouldn't it be better if the editors actually listened to these complaints and stopped posting the same damn story over and over?

what are the odds Rockstar sues?

Just because some [blizzard.com] companies [apple.com] always [sco.com] sue doesn't mean it's correct. They mostly do it because they know the people they sue has no chance of defending themselves. Well, SCO may have picked the wrong target.

k98sven (324383) | more than 9 years ago | (#12088429)

I can't imagine that what they've done doesnt break some copyright law somewhere

They're not circumventing a copyright-protection device, so they're not violating the DMCA.

Possibly, they could be violating the End-User License Agreement on the game, if it includes an anti-reverse-engineering clause. Although it's anyone's guess as to if they'd be able to enforce it.

what are the odds Rockstar sues?

"Very, very, small" Seems like a good guess to me.
Why would they?

1) These guys don't have any money.
2) They're not making any money off it.
3) Rockstar isn't losing any money off it, more likely the opposite.

Doesn't seem like they'd get much in damages. Hardly enough to outweigh the lawyer costs and PR damages.

Besides, there are only upsides to people doing this stuff. It extends the life of the game and generates more interest and sales. Game developers know this. The general trend in the last 10 years has been towards accomodizing people who want to mod games, not sueing them.

It's not like this is a trademark issue, where you have to go after people or you risk losing it.

Maybe someone should note that the mod is for GTA3. The original Grand Theft Auto had multiplayer right out of the box. I can't remember if it was LAN only or if internet play was possible as well. But then that was a PC only game, right.

I wonder if precious features such as multiplayer will get rarer, now that many hit titles are ported from various consoles to proper computers. In this case the game was released with the unfinished multiplayer code and some dedicated people are getting it to work. Why did the original programmers give up at what appears to be more than half way through?

Re:It always stuns me (0, Funny)

You have a good point, but to some, geography consists of "here" and "over there." Similarly, you get us vs. them.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Seriously people, learn some fucking

When I visited Eastern Europe this past fall, I learned the truth to a myth. The rest of the world doesn't know anymore about the United States than the United States knows about the rest of the world. Turns out, Europeans are pretty "me-centric" too. Many of them only know about the immediately specific area around them. I was amazed at how hypocritical this type of attitude is.

I also found that after I introduced myself, nobody cared what specific-city (or state) I was from. I was, "the American dude."

I also found that after I introduced myself, nobody cared what specific-city (or state) I was from. I was, "the American dude."

Europe has seen too many Americans, and too many insulting movies that portray europe.

I've been living 6 months in South America (Chile [aricachile.com] ) and things are very different here... Especially in the slightly out of the way places.

1. They have very little real experience with the USA... travel is still expensive to the USA. And they know a lot from movies and actually think the USA is a great place... but not based on direct experience.
2. They often are very interested in what city I am from (Seattle)... they are actually happy to see someone from the states here, to pratice their English, etc.

But your main point is right (you said "I learned the truth to a myth. The rest of the world doesn't know anymore about the United States than the United States knows about the rest of the world.")... The USA does not have a monopoly on ignorance.

HOWEVER: People in the USA have the education and the financial resources to go out and make friends... but they choose not to. This is a bad thing, to squander the wealth and freedom. With the advent of Sea and Air travel it was considered an ideal to go visit distance places... most in the USA would rather seem to just stay home and watch it on TV and build fences. This is not a good policy... and how are we supposed to bridge these knowledge/personal relationship gaps?

Re:Your attitude always stuns me (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12088426)

Yea, and if some European was in class at school you'd no doubt call him "The Spanish dude" or whatever. You know I'm right, don't even dare argue this point.

Secondly, parent is just a troll, plain and simple (and so is this).

nobody cared what specific-city (or state) I was from. I was, "the American dude."

I'm going to enjoy this. You refer to somebody born in Europe as "European" (such a classification is laughable) despite the fact that EUROPE IS NOT A COUNTRY (it will be at the current rate of things, but isn't yet).
So, you're saying it's OK for you to call somebody born in Europe "European" but wrong for a "European" to call somebody born on the North American continent, in the United States of America, "American".

Man, you really do have a twisted view on life.

Maybe nobody cared what specific city or state you came from because everyone you met all hated you. I haven't even met you, and I hate you.

xtracto (837672) | more than 9 years ago | (#12088094)

i still dont understand why Rockstar didnt implement some kind of multiplayer mode in Vice City. The multiplayer in GTA and GTA London was by far some of the most fun (and ridiculous) LAN gaming experience I have ever had. Theres only so much fun you can have fragging - but once you start playing silly mini games like (kill as many pedestrians as possible in 2 mins) and (hunt each other down with only the rocket launcher) it showed the actual completely silly fun you could have with the game. I do enjoy Vice City, it is a good (however a little overrated) game. But it would have benefited tenfold from a proper built-in multiplayer mode.

You're right. Rockstar can't afford to hire them. As ramped up as some Senators appear to be to go after 'em, the thought of having it online and "encouraging violence against specific others and not just random people" is probably frightening to their lawyers. And even if they liked the idea, and wanted to hire 'em, it probably increases the liability Rockstar faces. But then...I'm not a lawyer. Most of my soul is still intact :)

Alright! I guess this is a dream come true for a right winger like me who very much dislikes GTA. This could be the one thing that destroys GTA forever (and the reason Rockstar never made GTA online multiplayer). Please read the following steps to figure out why.

Step 1: GTA player downloads online capability.
Step 2: GTA player starts shooting other players online.
Step 3: GTA player no longer desires to kill hookers and cops, but other badguys.
Step 4: Since videogames influence behavior, there are less Cop shootings and more GTA player shootings in real life!
Step 5: Less GTA players means less profits.
Step 6: Rockstar sells company to "Big Idea" since they no longer make money.
Step 7: "Big Idea" starts making really cool VeggieTales games using Rockstar's old resources!!! :)

IT'S A WIN-WIN SITUATION!!!!!!! :)

I have to say that this is one of the best mod projects going ,IT adds a feature that was sorely missing fromt he origional game , Many many hours have been spent with my mates having a few Buds(Budiwar chezch beer ,not budweiser) playing turn about ,The moment i lernt about MTA i was enthralled , i even installed windows on one of my machines to test it out , Honestly its a great deal of fun .
I have yet to look too deeply into it , but i would like to test it out on linux X86 and see how the network code fares with wine or cedega .
MY point being has anyone tried to get this running under linux in some form , if so how (Was it just install and play).

ps the site seems to be suffering : http://osdir.com.nyud.org:8090/Article4775.phtml [nyud.org] I have yet to make the correl cach link as i can not really access the site

I think it's really cool how you say "a few Buds" all casual and cool-like, and then make sure that we all understand that this is fancy, imported "Budiwar chezch beer ,not budweiser" (sic) so that we don't think you're some lowly plebian. In fact, it is we who are the lowly plebes, for when we hear of someone having a "Bud", we think of one of the most heavily advertised brands this country has to offer instead of a beer that few of us have heard of- a beer so good that its name should be capitalized even when the country it comes from does not get such treatment (or even correct spelling).

Truly you are a god among men. Thank you, Fidel Catsro.

I agree with parent, grandparent has issues.

What would Hillary say about these guys? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12088111)

Clearly these two are helping to perpetuate the silent epidemic of media desensitisation that teaches kids it's OK to diss people because they are a woman, they're a different colour or they're from a different place [slashdot.org] and they should be ashamed of themselves for it. *smirk*

Can players create their own content? (1)

jimbro2k (800351) | more than 9 years ago | (#12088165)

I Don't play GTA, so I don't know the answer. But if I could mod the game to include my own models (perhaps modeling the hookers and hoods after senators and congresscritters), Then I just might buy it.

I would disregard anything Hillary says. She is trying her best to move towards the center in preparation for a run for President in 2008. She knows that she's perceived as being slightly left of Lenin and Marx (probably because she is), so she's got some major image repair to do.

If you read a bit about their history (back when I read it, like, years [implying not very "now" like the submitted states]) ago, they speak about how it was once just a pretty memory hack. It still is a pretty memory hack, where they have mapped out different parts of the program's memory and alter it. There are other additional changes also done but I don't believe they ever touch the exe, thus they're not doing anything illegal (replying to some comments).

Hey fuck that ad. (-1, Offtopic)

Nice blaring fucking horn on the Microsoft ad making my coworkers stand up and ask what the hell it was.

I thought slashdot wasn't going to have obtrusive ads? You realize the ONE thing this site has going for it is that everyone comes here? Your software is mediocre (searching sucks), and your editors don't do BASIC checking for dupes. Whatever. This place has been declining for years, but the past 12 months have been pitiful.

Just works.

Annoying problems in previous versions (1)

bmw (115903) | more than 9 years ago | (#12088197)

Does anyone know if this new version addresses all the annoying problems in the previous versions? Things like the terrible inaccuracy of the shooting, jittery movement of both vehicles and players, and weird glitches like random vehicles being found stuck half-way in the ground. I've been waiting for multiplayer GTA for quite a while now but last time I tried multitheftauto it still had a long way to go.

Either way, keep up the good work guys!

Yeah, for sure. I was in a server and somehow my shooting sped up (shotgun reloading was instantaneous) and I killed 3 people in about 8 seconds, one of whom was the admin. I then got kickbanned for 'speed hacking'. I hope they've fixed up those random bugs because as fun as it is to play GTA online, there will always be whiny admins who can't accept that someone beat them without cheating, and the less excuses the mod gives them to accuse us, the better.

Changing vehicules stats (3, Funny)

Misroi (834266) | more than 9 years ago | (#12088291)

I wonder if the vehicle stats are still local? I remember I played a while ago to vice city multiplayer, however I had modified the bike stats. I can still remember the surprise of the guy who tryed to ram my bike with his garbage truck, but instead went flying the other way. Who would have thought that a bike can weight a few thousand tonnes.

This reminds me of my "tuned" VW new Beetle in Midtown Madness. I screwed around with it in a multiplayer free-for-all, and seeing it whizz by from the other player's camera angle at 800 MPH (no exaggerations here) and seeing run into a building and climb up it is hilarious.

MMORPG? (2, Insightful)

flatass (866368) | more than 9 years ago | (#12088305)

The idea of a GTA3 death match is nice and all, but what about an MMORPG based GTA3? Obviously, lots of the way the game works would need to change; Larger cities, leveling up, etc. but it seems like an interesting idea to me anyhow. This coming from someone who has never played an MMORPG before, but perhaps this would be the title to pull the monthly fees from my pocket....

Pedestrian problem (3, Interesting)

Wasn't multiplyer impossible because you couldn't share all the pedestrian information across players? How did they solve that?

Wondering (4, Interesting)

speed1001 (793305) | more than 9 years ago | (#12088404)

Wondering if the Multiplayer version allows for teaming up or clan type scenarios. A roving gang of street thugs has a whole new meaning when there are actual players controlling them.
