iCopulate Romances iPods, Executive Pong

mboverload was one of several readers to note that you can purchase aircraft tracking laser today at ThinkGeek. (TG is owned by OSTG, the parent company of Slashdot, so activate all conspiracy theories now). You can also look into the new iPod accessory iCopulate which allows intimacy between mp3 players never before fantasized. And for the suit that has everything, Executve Pong.

Truth stranger than fiction? (2, Interesting)

BWJones (18351) | more than 9 years ago | (#12111713)

Funny....truly funny and an amusing use of corporate cooperation for a joke . However, I will say this: I am always amazed at the things humans will buy. I will betcha $1000 that if these were actual items for sale, they would sell big time. Of course the government would come down hard on the first item, and with the current administrations moves for more religion in government, they may crack down on the iCopulate as well (little spikey things are a bit too.....titillating for some folks), but that pong thing.... Wow, I can think of more than one dumb jock executive that would dump lots of cash into something like that. :-)

It's amazing, the things people would rather have other than money.

Why do you find that amazing. Money by itself is really not fun in any way. If all it's doing is sitting in your broker's account it does nothing more for you than your everquest currency.

IMnotveryHO, the *ENTIRE* purpose of money is to exchange it for things you'd rather have than money.

For some kinda-rich people that's rocket-ship startup companies [hobbyspace.com] -- for even richer people, it's entire countries [bbc.co.uk]

Re:Truth stranger than fiction? (1)

stlhawkeye (868951) | more than 9 years ago | (#12111996)

You missed the point.

I'm not amazed that people exchange money for goods and services.

I'm amazed at their choices in goods and services.

If somebody said to me, would you rather have $300, or an iPod, I'd take the $300.

If somebody offered me $45,000 or a BMW, I'd take the $45,000.

If somebody offered me the cash equivilent of most of what people buy, I'd take the cash and probably stick it in my IRA.

I like gizmos and gadgets as much as anybody else, but I rarely purchase them for myself, because I can almost always find a better use for the money. Paying down debt, home improvement projects, etc. When I do buy something for myself, it's meticulously researched. I'll be at the store and see "Stripes" on DVD for $9 and say to myself, "If it was $7, I might get it."

But then now and then a fuse blows in my brain and make something utterly worthless for way too much money, so I guess I'm no different than any other consumer with too much disposable income.

kin_korn_karn (466864) | more than 9 years ago | (#12112098)

If you have debt issues (as I do) then that should definitely be priority #1. Other than that, you're just an overly cautious miser. Though that's not necessarily a bad thing in this day and age.

I have friends who cashed out at the right time selling their startups (one, a clothing manufacturer; the others .coms) for enormous sums.

They buy many silly things, including.

  • A Ferrari that one of them bought new; drove to LA, and sold with a couple thousand miles same weekend; and flew back.
  • An auto-manufacturing robot for his house because he wanted a real robot.
  • A bigger garage, to hold the robot.
  • A high-end pool table with felt on it that costs more than my car.
I won't complain, though; since a couple of them also invested a few hundred grand in my own startup (which is probably a far riskier thing to do than buying a robot or ferrari which at least retain some value - though, it looks like I'm actually doing pretty well).

If that pong thing were real, I'm pretty sure they would buy it.

The government will come down hard? There already exist devices for pod-2-pod transfers, and there's nothing illegal about them. If there were, external hard drives, laptops, and anything else could be classified as illegal.

Re:Truth stranger than fiction? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12112154)

It was the iCopulate that allowed the unholy tryst between a Rock filled iPod and an iPod filled with an audio recording of the Bible (as read by Larry King) which lead to the fell creation of Christian Rock. There are rumors yet that this evil alliance has since used iCopulate to infect iPods filled with Heavy Metal and even Rap- though none who has ever experienced these has remained in a coherent enough state to accurately witness its veracity.

Pong! (4, Insightful)

AKAImBatman (238306) | more than 9 years ago | (#12111721)

Am I the only one who wishes the Pong thing *wasn't* a joke? I mean, how cool would it be to project Pong onto an entire wall? If others are like me, ThinkGeek may end up having to make it into a *real* product. :-)

Re:Pong! (1)

dknight (202308) | more than 9 years ago | (#12111805)

umm
what's to stop you from doing it?

I have an Atari 2600, with pong, and a projector. Back when I was in college, we used to hook the atari up to the projector all the time and play pong in 100" of glory

Re:Pong! (1)

AKAImBatman (238306) | more than 9 years ago | (#12111845)

what's to stop you from doing it?

Nothing. It would just be nice to have a complete package for people with more money than time. Hopefully they'll figure out a way of making the projector a bit cheaper. (Shouldn't be too hard considering that the game doesn't require much. Perhaps an electromechanical game in front of a light bulb, plus a minor amount of optics.)

Re:Pong! (1)

Shkuey (609361) | more than 9 years ago | (#12111843)

Well, no, I wish it too. Only for the sake of seeing an LED projector though. I'm tired of replacing high priced lamps.

You can already project pong on a wall fairly easily, just get a copy of pong for the PC and connect a projector.

Re:Pong! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12111884)

Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you said "Executive bong"

That can't be right, we all know executives partake of the crack-pipe!

Re:Pong! (1)

cmpalmer (234347) | more than 9 years ago | (#12111915)

You wouldn't need a high resolution LCD projector, so I really think someone should make this (wireless paddle controllers and everything). I think it would sell great at Sharper Image, Brookstone, and Thinkgeek. I wonder if you could do it with lasers?

Re:Pong! (1)

AKAImBatman (238306) | more than 9 years ago | (#12111990)

I wonder if you could do it with lasers?

Funny you should mention that. I was just considering the idea myself. It would certainly give a higher resolution, but I'm concerned that the "pulse" aspect of most commercial lasers would give people headaches.

Re:Pong! (1)

It would certainly give a higher resolution,

Yep, that's what's really needed for Pong, a higher resolution display. That'd make those big rectangular bricks look so much more realistic!

I'd even go for a plasma display to make the colors look more life-like.

Great idea, wrong company. A company that sells a BCD clock as a binary clock obviously doesn't get it.

For real...is direct iPod-iPod transfer possible? (1)

mr_majestyk (671595) | more than 9 years ago | (#12112108)

Has anyone actually tried to implement this? It would require:
* Dual-ended iPod cables
* Ability to develop and download iPod software to do the transfer
* Ability not to get sued by Apple (or RIAA) for commercializing the solution

I'm sure others have thought of trying to do this as soon as the iPod appeared. It would obviously be a huge hit to "mate" iPods and swap collections, but who has come closest to making it happen? What is the current technical and legal status of each of these barriers?

Re:For real...is direct iPod-iPod transfer possibl (1)

TheRaven64 (641858) | more than 9 years ago | (#12112163)

FireWire devices are peers, so it would be relatively easy (assuming the availability of an iPod SDK, which doesn't exist outside Apple). The solution proposed by the iCopulate is mode feasible though - produce something small and lightweight that looks like a computer to both, and sucks files from one to the other.

Re:For real...is direct iPod-iPod transfer possibl (1)

shotfeel (235240) | more than 9 years ago | (#12112523)

TERRI SCHIAVO DEAD AT AGE 26!! (-1, Flamebait)

Ass, Ltd. Ho! (714400) | more than 9 years ago | (#12111724)

I just heard on the radio that Terri Schiavo, star of the TV show 'Veggie Tales,' has died. The cause of death is unknown at this time, but Tom DeLay is a primary suspect. It is believed that had he been by her side, he could have chewed up a nice juicy Whataburger and spit it down Ms. Schiavo's throat, in a life-giving meat-kiss that could have, at least, prolonged the end. We can only hope that this criminal is brought to justice.

Terri will be remembered as true comedy pioneer. Her sitcom was the first to be simulcast on all cable news-entertainment networks, in an age where most television comedy was broadcast on one major network or another. "Let's remember Terri for what she accomplished, not for what a retard she looked like during the final third of her life. She brought together news organizations from the left and the right. She didn't have to pee for the final 5 days. Can you imagine? Not peeing for 5 days?" said that one catholic monk-looking dickhead.

Despite her accomplishments-- both on television, and in that one bed she's been lying in since 1990, Terri remained humble. When asked about whether fame and fortune had changed her outlook on life, she replied "AHHHHHHHH... WAAAAHHHHHH" and then made a guttural noise.

Terri, you will be missed. Whatever level of hell you are in.

Peace be with you.

(Also, the Pope is a fat old Polish guy. Hopefully he'll die soon too.)

I was thinking about it for a minute... This really won't be that difficult to do, in fact, fairly easy using open source software (Namely Linux) and a small general purpose embedded controller...

The database and file structure of the iPod is fairly well documented, so here is the base structure of the project, if some other people want to get one board we could get this done in a matter of weeks from start to finish:

Small Embedded PC with USB host capabilities (I'm thinking something cheap and ARM/XScale based)
Add in HFS+ support in the Kernel (Already been done)
USB Mass storage driver
A few hours worth of specific programing

So, you would have a small box with the embedded controler with a small LCD and a few buttons hooked up the the serial controller of the embedded system along with two USB ports. When you plug two iPods into the ports they are both mounted as USB mass storage devices where you can read the iPod music database file and all the music files. The big problem is, most iPods are going to be too full to properly sync all the music between them, solution; Taking advantage of the fact that Apple now allows you to make on-the-go playlists, you would then be presented two options on the LCD:

1. Copy Playlist
2. Copy entire iPod Useful in the case of say coping a Mini to a 60 gig iPod photo.

Then just check each file to make sure there aren't any duplicates, skip over any files ending in .mp4 and then copy. Update the library of the iPod the files were copied to and you're good to go.

If anyone is interested in making this project happen I would love to help organize it:

I've got plenty of the pink latex sleeves you can have, if you're serious about making this work... :)

Using iCopulate to create a connection between a 60 gig iPod and a iPod Mini is an illegal operation, or should be anyway. 8)

$69 is good, but $77 is better because you get "8" more.

Worst part is... (1)

I sure would like to see some of ThinkGeeks famed action shots for the iCopulate.

April Fools Day annoys me. (3, Funny)

This isn't funny, the story on Space Daily about Bush supposedly cancelling the shuttle program isn't funny. None of this garbage is funny.

Why does every news source, especially those online, feel the need to pull a cutsie April Fools prank. The practice makes the web practically useless on this day for any news.

We get enough of this from our local morning drive-time morning zoo wacky radio DJs. Why cant Slashdot be above this?

Lighten up, it's one day out of the year, people have fun with it... chill out.

While I agree that some of these stories aren't necessarily side-splitting, I'd like to note that humor is quite a healthy thing. It's also true that some of us need more health than others.

If you don't have a sense of humor, or at least a sense of lighthearted fun, and can't deal with it just one day a year, then it's a bit of a shame. But a greater shame is the pissing and moaning over the good time some of the rest of us may be having. People are absolutely free to not read gag stories if they so choose.

I hear he's playing the world's greatest April Fools joke today.

He's gonna pop up tomorrow and be like, "0wn3d!"

Or something.
