First Person Shooters (Games) 30

Voodoo Extreme has the news that the winners of a recent design contest held by Valve will now see their Deathmatch maps added to the Steam repetoire. From the article: "Three Half-Life 2: Deathmatch maps are now available via Steam. These maps were created by the three players who won our recent HL2:DM mapping contest. If you have HL2:DM installed in your Steam games list, you will receive the new maps automatically."

Awesome! (5, Funny)

I'll we have to do now is await the Slashdot map pack and HL2:DM will be complete. Features: A special capture-the-flag level featuring SCO on one side and Slashdot on the other! Level set in Soviet Russia where the lag complains about the players! Level set in North Korea where only old people use gravity guns! One level so complex that it can only be run by a Beowulf cluster of sentient supercomputer overlords! A level made in the post-9/11 era! And, of course, the bonus Underpants Gnomes level created by CowboyNeal.

A special capture-the-flag level featuring SCO on one side and Slashdot on the other!

Actually, it's been updated... it is now SCO vs Microsoft. The coding for this level is unique because the game never announces the winner for the round, as is usual, but merely states who the biggest loser of the round is.

Oh, and don't forget the "feature" where every third level is the same.

SPOILER: The faint of heart or the easily annoyed will NOT want to play this game on the first day of April.

In Soviet Russia, Half-Life maps play YOU.

HL2 Custom Maps (5, Interesting)

wallykeyster (818978) | about 9 years ago | (#12236701)

One of the best custom maps I've played is the WTC level from Singe [telefragged.com] . If you are a HL2:DM player, I recommend finding a server hosting it.

Deathmatch = yawn (5, Interesting)

antdude (79039) | about 9 years ago | (#12236750)

I played some of the original HL2 maps. The gravity gun was a nice touch, but I got bored with deathmatch in all games long ago. How about the rest of you?

I like team based games. CTF is old as well. That was fun during Quake 2 days.

Re:Deathmatch = yawn (1)

Grand (152636) | about 9 years ago | (#12237081)

isnt CTF team based? :-)

For me, DM gets boring very quickly. Its fun every once in a while for short periods. Ive always been a fan of team based and class based games. I really wish someone would make a CS:CTF with classes. Would almost eliminate the many one sided maps in CS (not starting an argument).

Reignking (832642) | about 9 years ago | (#12237142)

I completely agree -- I couldn't care less about DM on any game, and wonder why anyone would play it for more than 5 minutes. OTOH, those servers always seem popular. In UT2004, I love Bombing Run, but few play it, while everyone is either on Onslaught (excellent gameply) or DM.

DM is soooo 1995 :)

Re:Deathmatch = yawn (1)

Pxtl (151020) | about 9 years ago | (#12239870)

VCTF is popular as well. And some games have good DM, but most of the new FPS games just don't do it right. UT's DM has always been weak. The best DM I've ever played will always be Liero.

Lehk228 (705449) | about 9 years ago | (#12240105)

I so cannot wait for the next UT game with Conquest mode, sort of a hybrid between assault and onslaught, with fecking huge maps (3-4 times the avertage ONS map?)

You mean TFC?

I'm one of those DM fans. My last boss even told me I wasn't a team player.

Idunno.. I just don't play games often enough to get into CounterStrike or other team based games.

It also seems like the majority of the CS folks are too serious about their games (or retarded, or 14 years old... it's usually one of the three). I just want to run around and blow up my roomates/wife/brother/whatever for a couple hours on the weekends without having to get too involved with anything.

I don't have the time to invest in anything more complex than that.

I guess it depends on what kind of deathmatch you are talking about.

To me, the basic, every man for himself, kind of DM is pretty boring. I do like team deathmatch - even if you don't know the other players, at least you can kind of work together.

The *best* (imo) are games like the Battlefield series, especially when you are plugged into ventrilo or teamspeak. When you can actually speak with other people and discuss strategy, it transcends a mere game or solo mission. When you have a group of people acting as a unified squad, each aware of the other's actions, it's completely engrossing!

When I look at console gaming, I can see where it is hopefully heading. Everyone running the same hardware, essentially the same IO tools, no hacks...even better, no futzing around with patches, settings, conflicts, etc etc. I'm not likely to step away from my PC anytime soon....but the next generation of consoles is going to be interesting to watch. I hope Nintendo gets it right...

Heh, you sound like you would enjoy laser tag (at a fairly large arena/maze set up) Last time I went to Laser Quest it was a pure DM, but we had some teaming elements... and no limitations in games.. make a truce, break it the next instant... or make a truce, wait till your 'partner' turns around, fire, when he turns around with a WTF look on his face say you didnt do it and fire again to disable him and run off! ;) And they also have team games, but I've never been around for those, even though I realyl want to

Well, I enjoy paintball....does that count? :) Nothing like getting shot and having it hurt like hell to remind you how you f'ed up.

When you have a group of people acting as a unified squad, each aware of the other's actions, it's completely engrossing!

Natural Selection [unknownworlds.com] can be pretty cool for this, especially when playing as Kharaa (aliens). With all the hive-sight and whatnot (basically a wallhack to locate all your teammates and enemies they can directly see) there can be some amazing, unspoken teamwork emerging - it's great when a horde of skulks burst from cover without warning and annihilate a heavily-armed bunch of marines, without a single word spoken or prompt typed...

I'm not a very good multiplayer gamer - I usually get shot within seconds by some hyperactive twelve-year-old with ultra-fast reflexes. But add a bit of teamwork, and I can actually become useful. :-)

Re:Deathmatch = yawn (1)

antdude (79039) | about 9 years ago | (#12239876)

Ditto. That was a great mod. I no longer play it anymore. I also liked playing other games like BF1942, RTCW, ET, etc.

In RTCW and ET, I like to be the medic to heal and fix people up. At least I didn't have to worry about aiming and shooting. I did get high scores as a medic.

amliebsch (724858) | about 9 years ago | (#12244830)

I liked the teamwork possibilities of the vehicles in Halo for PC. Two warthogs, advancing with supporting infantry, can be very effective. I'm hoping that one of the HL2 mods will support some vehicles soon.

More than anything else I'm really waiting for Team Fortress:Source, with all the graphical awesomeness and physics fun in CS:S and HL2DM. I still miss playing the old TFC for hours and hours on end.

Lehk228 (705449) | about 9 years ago | (#12240075)

Have you tired UT2k4 in RPG Invasion mode? you fight an alien hoarde while gaining experience, levels and stats by making kills. quite fun actually especially if you aren't in the mood for a hardcore game.

Re:Deathmatch = yawn (1)

Mr. Grimm (599800) | about 9 years ago | (#12237569)

I like DM because I don't play FPS online enough to have a steady group all the time, or even a tenth of the time. I'd rather just kill them all and have my own skills be the judge on whether I win or lose. Depending on some 14 year old to finish the match before his mom makes him go eat dinner is not my idea of fun.

Re:Deathmatch = yawn (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 9 years ago | (#12241926)

Absolutely. It's amazing that Valve spent all that time coming up with a beautiful, but mediocre shooter, and now we're supposed to get excited over beautiful, but boring deathmatch maps?

Does anyone with an attention span over 30 seconds think deathmatch is fun?

If so, have you played anything else for the past 10 years?

Fun (2, Informative)

Mukaikubo (724906) | about 9 years ago | (#12239765)

I really, really dig HL2DM. Much more than Counterstrike, call me crazy.

I really like the new maps. The one (can't remember which it is!) that's the fairly small map, with a fairly enclosed area for the rocket launcher and a balcony overlooking the area with a shield terminal an excellent field of fire... yeah, that one's absolute mad joy in a 6v6 team deathmatch. Both teams tend to set up around two separate defensible points and lay into each other.
