No Porn for You, iPod

Zonk posted more than 8 years ago | from the ipod-made-sad dept.

TheBrutalTruth writes "Wired has an article explaining why pornographers are staying away from the Video IPod. From the article: 'When it comes to the iPod, Fayling said there are few rewards and many risks. Fayling emphasized the pitfalls of combining a device designed for younger audiences with content they are prohibited from viewing. "There's already a public perception that we (in the industry) are preying on youth," he said. "Without safeguards you open yourself up to more scrutiny from government and parents' groups.'"

DVD players are aimed at everybody. Porn is on DVD. iPods are aimed at everybody who loves music. That's not just children.

The folks at POVPOD [povpod.com] beg to differ with this article.

Yeah, suicide girls has an iPod-formatted video podcast right on their homepage (and it is aimed specifically at the iPod). I ran into their website today and thought that was freakin' awesome. Once I clear up some HD space, I'll have to subscribe. Also, here is another article about porn on the iPod [nwsource.com]. I forwarded that to my mom.

Terry Schiavo Announces Support for GNAA (-1, Flamebait)

Terry Schiavo Announces Support for GNAA
Terry Schiavo Announces Support for GNAA

NEWSFLASH - Startling new information has been recieved this morning regarding the 10-year "right to life" controversy once again thrust into the public eye.

On the day President Bush signed the bill, dubbed as "Terri's Law II" onto the federal books, advocates for the Schiavo family state a startling discovery. Terri's parents, the Schindlers - no doubt covetous jews, have announced their comatose daughter's intentions to support the GNAA.

"We were at her bedside with a video camera, trying to put an end to all of this, if we could just get her to make her intention to continue her hellish brain-dead exiestence clear." said Schiavo's mother. "When we asked her if she wanted to live, what she had to live for....we very disctinctly heard her intentions." These soon to be released five minutes of video show a definate picture of the woman's intentions as she repedately spastically shakes her head and moans what experts say appears to be "G....NAA! G.....NAA!"

"This is a very special day for our organization," GNAA representative and Golden Goatse candidate Penisbird said. "In the midst of this national controversy, it is now very clear that our organization has supporters with a visible profile."

GNAA General Council are currently debating the potential ramifications of this cry of support, and at this time it is unclear if Schiavo will be considered as a candidate for membership - as she is quite clearly neither gay, nor a nigger. "Our organization is generally not open to white devils, filthy breeders, or female creatures - however, considering the high profile nature of the individual and our well-known reputation for philantrophy, it is possible we might make an exception allowing Schiavo to become a member, to fulfill her dying wish," said GNAA representative KiSSy.

As of this time, no definate statement has been made regarding Schiavo's future with the GNAA. However, it is rumored that her parents are now diverting a yet-undisclosed sum of money to the GNAA's Nigerian bank accounts, in accordance with their daughter's wishes.

Re:Black sheep (5, Insightful)

jrockway (229604) | more than 8 years ago | (#13903811)

if I were a porn producer, I would just distribute my movies as H.264-encoded mov files and let the user do what he wants with it. H.264 plays under every OS now and it downloads cleanly to the iPod, so this sounds like a good solution. They're not specifically targeting the iPod (not that I see a problem here), but they're not standing in the way of people who want pr0n on their iPod. Plus it works under linux, which is more than you can say for the low-quality wmv and rm that seems to be the "industry standard" now.

I, for some reason, don't see much interest in having porn on your iPod, though. I show my iPod to people all the time, and I wouldn't want them uncovering my pr0n stash! (Plus, when do you need porn and don't have a real computer or magazine around?)

The internal chip is supposed to be able to decode H.264 at VGA resolution, but Apple only claims it is able to play 480x480 videos, though scaled down, of course. But at least the software to recode video for the iPod's native resolution is readily available.

In February, a man was arrested in Schenectady, New York, for viewing an adult movie in his vehicle. Also this year, Tennessee outlawed the display of obscene movies from a car. The City Council in Flint, Michigan, passed a measure imposing a $500 fine upon drivers who play pornographic movies in their cars.

WTF? there is a rule specifically against watching PORN in a CAR?
Is this a rampant problem? Why would anyone need a rule against that?

Bios_Hakr (68586) | more than 8 years ago | (#13903704)

Here's what I don't get: who would watch porn on an iPod? First, you need privacy for porn. A group can be interesting; but it's usually just awkward. Next, you need semi-hands free operation. I guess you could prop you iPod agianst something...

I guess if you just have to jack off in the bathroom at work or you can't make it 4 stops on the subway, then go for it. But the other 99.98% of us will just delay our jacking till we get home.

You know, that's a sexist remark. Women masterbate too. And, of course, there is a distinct population that actually has managed to never conciously masterbate.

But upon reaching a socially acceptable age to begin fornication, the practice dies off quickly. Most humans pair off with a sexual partner in a religious/legal relationship, allowing them easy access to sexual satisfaction that is all but univerally preferred to masterbation.

Try the Kinsey study if you're really interested.

Seriously. If you're naive enough to thing it's 90% you seriously need to take a look at the sales numbers for the porn industry.

This article is quite enlightening [msn.com], and as a bonus it summarises some of the research debunking the myth that porn contributes to violence.

You're the one that belongs to the freaky minority - deal with it.

Re:Privacy (1)

MacGod (320762) | more than 8 years ago | (#13904066)

The people who would watch porn (with or without jacking off) are probably the same people who expose themselves in public. Some people are just overly-exhibitionist and depraved.

In the case of iPod-porn, it might go even further. Imagine a "Jackass" show or people who just like to disturb others in general, watching porn in public. As it is, some people like to talk about sex or other socially taboo-ish topics very openly, for the express purpose of disturbing those around them. I wouldn't be surprised if public iPod porn was an extension of this.

Censorship? (4, Informative)

SonicBlue (921984) | more than 8 years ago | (#13903710)

Ah, come on now, sex sells. And, anyway, why would you sell a product that's not letting the customer use it for whatever they want? As soon as the product leaves the company, the company has nothing to do with what it's used for. Censorship is always worse than the content being censored. Just like with everything else, there is a way of getting around it -- there's a guide on how to convert pornographic material so it can still be put on iPods [diveintomark.org]. I wish companies put their money on improving the features rather than to stop the customers from using it for whatever they want.

Soon monitors will be banned because they're used to view porn.

First it was "dirty books" and black and white softcore photos -- much later hardcore, gangbangs, bukkake and goatse style stuff. The guy starts making money -- and voila, porn is everywhere and he's filthy rich.

The thing about violence is when you take a normal person, being exposed to real violence makes you want to encounter it less. Halo is not real violence. Being in a crowd during a drive-by is.

A normal person exposed to pr0n, however, can be aroused and is more likely to become addicted to it and to have it change the way they perceive members of the opposite sex.

They've talked to exactly 1 (one) company distributing adult films. Wow! And of how many exactly? Actually several have jumped on already - a mere week after the new iPod was shipped to users! This is a non-story of tabloid bullshit, but I would expect no less of Slashdot than to rehash it I'm sorry to say :(

It is a bit more precise to say "Zonk" (or l'il Zonky, as his fans call him) than Slashdot. L'il Zonky has a habit of taking PR pieces, old news and generally unimportant crap and putting it up on Slashdot. Some of the other editors are quite good.

I recommend you keep Z.I.N.S in mind -- "Zonk is not Slashdot."

I believe jeff Goldblum said, "Porn will find a way."

A few scenes later and he is in the back of a jeep with a busted leg driving away from a raging vagina monster.

No Pr0n for you, ipod! (1)

*Ipod looks guilty and retreats into a corner while deleting all it's pr0n*

Later it will jump up into your lap looking for affection and re-assurance.

"Fayling emphasized the pitfalls of combining a device designed for younger audiences with content they are prohibited from viewing."

Let me be the first to say it, but... Get the FUCK outta here! This coming from the industry that exploits the 18 to 21 year old genre?

Yeah, right....

Why buy an iPod? (0, Flamebait)

spacecowboy420 (450426) | more than 8 years ago | (#13903850)

There's iAudio x5 that beats the shit out of iPods all day...has an fm tuner, line in recording, video, supports MP3, OGG, WMA, ASF, FLAC, WAV, MPEG4, JPG, TXT, AVI and it's comperably priced. Oh, and you can use it with windows, Linux and a mac. http://eng.iaudio.com/ [iaudio.com]

No, I don't work for them - but I love mine.

Looks sweeet. According to the manual, it can even operate in directory-driven mode! Just the thing I've been looking for. What can you say about the UI as a user? Now, if there only was a SDK available...

Mods: Why this was modded as flamebait? This product seems IMHO very reasonable.

Get Your iPod Porn right here -- for free (1)

putko (753330) | more than 8 years ago | (#13903858)

If you read the article, you'll find these guys [povpod.com], who have "point of view" porn. Their concept sounds good -- the format of the porn is meant to correspond to the type of experience you'll have while masturbating with your iPod -- or maybe that's just the kind of orn you get when you make a cheapo porn movie with one guy holding a camera, for the duration of the whole flick.

The stuff is free, so download away. I'm sure the pornographers will appreciate the Slashdot market knowing about their fine product -- it is their crowd of early adopters.

Whippee -- everybody, get out your khock and balls and whack away!! (that's an Adam Sandler reference).

Here's one for ya: (1)

So you toss a porn movie or two on the iPod to wank it in the bathroom or whatever. What happens when your friends and girlfriend inevitably want to toy around with the thing?

Is it difficult? (1)

polaralex (764908) | more than 8 years ago | (#13903882)

Well, is it difficult to pass porn from your PC to iPod? Transcode your PC porn and transfer them... Also, come on now! Is it so nessecairy to view porn ALL DAY??

It was interesting to read this article after just last night hearing a short news blurb on my local CBS affiliate about the porn industry is "embracing" the new iPod with man on the street interviews with people who don't like the idea of having the "guy sitting next to them in class looking at porn," and overarching implications that parents should be alarmed and ready to take up arms to defend their kids' innocence.

povpod.com already has pr0n for your iPod. It's a podcast you can subscribe to for FREE (as in beer). . . .or did I miss the point or something?

Kids have iPods? (1)

CastrTroy (595695) | more than 8 years ago | (#13904042)

I seem to think that its the opposite. Although they may market the iPod as device for young, cool people, very few young people have them. This especially holds true for the more expensive units such as the video iPod. Not a lot of parents are willing to shell out $300 so their kids can listen to music. I know I never had anything that extravagant as a kid. Most people I see with iPods are 20+. More kids have TVs and DVD players in their rooms. That doesn't stop them from producing porn on DVD.
