To get the joke you need to actually RTFA and look at the new logo.

Pokemon? (5, Funny)

goofyheadedpunk (807517) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925250)

Anyone else think it looks like a pokemon ball with horns?

And if you put 20 horns on a pokeball (1)

tepples (727027) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925328)

If you put 20 horns on what you think is a Pokéball, you get a Bumble Ball [google.com]. Then if you take the Bumble Ball, cover it in glue, and roll it around in your box of Lego bricks, you get Katamari Damacy [photobucket.com]!

Actually it looks more like the sort of logo you'd find on an IM or P2P app (they all seem to be using that style of logo). It just looks amateurish.

On the flip side, the old logo (though fun) was terribly amateurish, and impeded taking the OS seriously. Then again, Linux was taken seriously in spite of the goofy penguin.

Conclusion: You can't take FreeBSD seriously.

Misty: "On no! It's Jessie and James from teem Racketeer!"
Jessie: "We are here to put a stop to your open source with the power of love and monolopy!"
Ash: "I call on you BeeEssDeemon!"
BeeEssDeemon: "Bee ess dee! Bee ess dee!"
Ash: "Use BSD License attack!"
James: "Call forth Flamewaramon! Use 'No GPL license is better' counter attack!"
Ash: "But you forgot! BeeEssDeemon has resistance to all moderation and instantly gets 5+ while Flarewamon will get -1 troll!"
*big explosion with Team Racketeer flying off into the sky with comedic effect*

And no I don't watch that much Pokemon.

It reminds me of the Firefox logo. Anyone? Not on the surface, but the use of lines and swoops definitely conjures the same overall shape to mind.

My thoughts (1)

bhirsch (785803) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925257)

It's kind of ugly at first, but not as bad the more I look at it. I think its the font used that bothers me, not so much the graphic. The red background also seems like a little bit too much.

The logo looks like... (1, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#13925258)

...Satan got his first copy of a Lightwave or was dying.

I like it. (2, Insightful)

Datamonstar (845886) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925260)

Keep the daemon, but make it so that if you didn't know it was supposed to be a daemon... it's um... not a daemon.

Huh... (2, Insightful)

g0at (135364) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925261)

It looks like a little piggy's head. And the wimpy font for the wordmark is disappointing. What was wrong with the old one?

Great! (5, Insightful)

ornil (33732) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925263)

I am amazed. It manages to look similar to the old one (horns) for someone who knows, yet if you don't know it does not suggest anything demonlike. Which is precisely what they wanted, I guess.

I know there are going to be a lot of FreeBSD zealots who will miss Beastie [wikipedia.org]...

Re:Beastie... (5, Informative)

Ubi_NL (313657) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925295)

This has been discussed many times: beastie will remain as the mascotte, but not as the logo.

Re:Beastie... (1)

bpevansncsu (766367) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925370)

Count me as one of those that likes the old Beastie logo. Looks like they may have caved in to pressure that the Beastie not policitically correct for the religious crowd. So who will draw the first Beastie logo thrusting his trident into the lame new one?

Welp (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#13925273)

Once again grammar makes up for spelling otherwise I would have been confused about whether it was Welp or Andrew who won.

Juicer? (2, Interesting)

jgbishop (861610) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925281)

It looks like some sort of weird dual-orange juicer.

Has anyone else noticed how popular the "shiny orb" look has become recently? There are a lot of places now using the "shiny round button" as their logo. Weird.

So why in the devil is /. still using the old logo (3, Funny)

davidwr (791652) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925289)

Why is Slashdot still using daemon [slashdot.org] then?

I guess Cowboy Neal hasn't cleared the trademark permissions yet.

Next /. poll: What color should the new /. BSD icon be:
1) red
2) grey
3) black
4) white
5) orange
6) CowboyNeal

wtf (1, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#13925294)

FreeBSD seems to become a bigger joke day by day. Tell me, does that logo instill a feeling of a strong, capable *nix? It looks like a clown.

Re:wtf (2, Interesting)

JamesTRexx (675890) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925444)

I don't agree with thinking FreeBSD becoming a bigger joke because I think it's very good, but I do have to agree with the feel of the logo. It's a bit too much like something for a gaming console, or some sophisticated toy. It lacks that touch of authority, the feeling of late night logging into work and do some command line maintenance. Or maybe I'm already getting too old, being over 30 and all. :-P

Watch out. You may have just opened yourself up to a lawsuit from MS for letting everyone know their logo plans for Vista.

Re:What a stupid logo! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#13925403)

Agreed, no character to it at all. Pseudo-corporate asshattery at it's finest. They should have gone all the way and changed the mascot to a bar of gold and named the distro Aurix.

RouterSlayer (229806) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925314)

OMFG! what the hell is that?

so we go from a cute demon (or daemon?) to... what is that supposed to be?
(yeah i know its supposed to be horns, but it aint).

augh.

BSD is STILL the ONLY OS I've EVER seen that has done a "DOUBLE kernel panic".
WTF is that?!?

Linux uptime - years, solaris uptime - years, osx uptime - years, vms uptime - decades ...
BSD uptime - weeks at best, windows uptime - days at best...

yep that's why M$ uses BSD code... ;)

PS- will BSD's hard disk management EVER get out of the dark ages? I mean, come on... slackware 1.x had better handling than this. solaris 2.5 was where this is, and BSD hasn't changed since then...

would it kill you guys to put in standardized device names? augh!

Re:Now that I've seen the logo, it sucks even more (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#13925351)

if your BSD uptime is days, you clearly don't belong administrating any machines. I've had boxes up for 400+ days, and only down for updates. I haven't had a server crash because of BSD software ever, outside of testing beta code to help troubleshoot bugs.

Re:Now that I've seen the logo, it sucks even more (1)

isa-kuruption (317695) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925373)

% uname -a && uptime
FreeBSD genesis 5.1-RELEASE-p8 FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE-p8 #0: Sun Sep 28 16:56:16 PDT 2003 root@genesis:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENESIS i386
11:06AM up 390 days, 9:19, 2 users, load averages: 0.23, 0.19, 0.19

So much for that theory of yours...

DOUBLE kernel panic? (1)

Ayanami Rei (621112) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925479)

Do you mean "double fault"?
That's when the system experiences a (new, unexpected) page fault in the kernel while handling a page fault for user space.
It indicates some kind of bug in the VM, as the page handler of any x86 OS must be specifically designed to avoid that problem.

Logos (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#13925317)

Where can be found the logos from the other contesters ?

hideous (5, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#13925324)

Personally I hate "shaded" or three-dimensional logos. They quickly become tiresome. This logo will look cheap and dated 5 years from now, I guarantee it. I would prefer a more "timeless" logo, closer to monochromatic, two-dimensional. Something that could be sketched with a pen, yet be completely unique and recognizable.

I feel this logo has the most meaning only to those familiar with the previous logo (the beastie). A random person on the street (or in the boardroom) will not have a clue. And that's not good. For instance, why is the "horned ball" turned slightly? Just to show off perspective? To emulate the perspective of the previous logo? Why not just show the logo head-on, with symmetrical horns? Look at the black and white version. It looks like a drawing from a geometry textbook. A logo should be as minimal and simple as the font used to write the letters next to it.

I do like the font though. If the word FreeBSD were larger, and the logo smaller, I think it would look better, at least at the example I'm looking at.

Oh well. Anything is better than than the beastie from a corporate point of view, although this new one is utterly plastic and lifeless.

Four-dimensional logos however, they give me dreams of forests made of glass.

Bland, Souless, Lacks Flavor, and Lacks Style sounds like the perfect description of the Modern Artsy Professional.

If that's what the logo contest was intended for, they seemed to have hit their target.

I like the old (1)

I think the people who think it's a good logo are the people that know it's an abstracted beastie. An outsider will just wonder why the hell it's a red ball with spikes.

Sphere from Phantasm (0)

OMG! You Killed Beastie! (1)

Zemplar (764598) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925378)

Clever design! The new logo should appeal to long-time FreeBSD fans yet be more broadly accepted by the social police that guard the confines of "politically correct" - especially in commercial settings.

Beastie (the Daemon) is NOT GOING ANYWHERE (5, Insightful)

adamwpants (858079) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925386)

A lot of people seem to have trouble grasping the concept here, so perhaps this will help.

There is a difference between a mascot and a logo.

Think about McDonalds. Their logo is a giant 'M'. Their mascot is a scary kiddy-fiddling clown thing. The giant 'M' has changed over time, but Ronald McDonald is still the same freakish evil clown.

The Daemon mascot is going nowhere.

Jeebus.

Just wondering (1)

Nom du Keyboard (633989) | more than 8 years ago | (#13925395)

I wonder how much the judges were influenced by the fact that a "Professional Designer" used a "Custom Created Font" for his submission? Did just regular folks have an even chance?

To me it looks like a Chaos Toy that you'd kick around on the floor with the horns causing it to caroom off in unexpected directions.

What it does not do for me is make me think of BSD Lnix when I see it.
