Tokyo's Swanky New 360 Lounge Open

Zonk posted more than 8 years ago | from the martini-please? dept.

XBox (Games) 39

For some end of the day eye candy, eToyChest has a photo spread of the new 360 lounge in Tokyo. From the article: "This setup reeks of the kind of spread Microsoft had going on in their back-room party at the Shrine at E3, only with more game playing and less milling around wondering what was going on. The lounge has numerous Xbox 360 kiosks, two sofa areas set aside with 42-inch HD televisions for players to test drive titles such as Ridge Racer 6 and Ninty-Nine Nights, and one gigantic 200-inch big screen TV where players can weep knowing that they will never be able to have this kind of setup in their own home."

Impressive... (2)

Auraiken (862386) | more than 8 years ago | (#13928658)

It looks really well designed. Doesn't really fit the whole windows perspective though. Looks a lot more like how a mac store should look like. Very clean in the pictures.

This might be a random question but can anyone tell me the name of this drink? [xbox.com]

Drink name (1)

NewmanBlur (923584) | more than 8 years ago | (#13928773)

The tag on that drink says "osusume" (oh-sue-sue-may), which just means "recommended". What was the original url?

Original URL (1)

Auraiken (862386) | more than 8 years ago | (#13928778)

The original URL is http://assets.xbox.com/ja-jp/lounge/menu/drink.htm [xbox.com]

It's the one at the wine section, about halfway down the page.

Re:Original URL (3, Insightful)

NewmanBlur (923584) | more than 8 years ago | (#13928910)

It's called the "Green Illusion", which is odd because it looks blue to me. I guess that's why it's an illusion.

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#13934488)

From what I can make out of the surrounding text, the name is indeed "green illusion"

The menu description says it uses herb leaves to naturally create a green similar to the verdant green used in the X-box design. It's an alcoholic drink, but there's no mention of what kind of spirits are in it.

Lounge?? (1)

readin (838620) | more than 8 years ago | (#13928680)

Looks like most of the gaming consoles require you to stand. Not much of a "lounge" in my opinion.

Standing vs sitting (1)

Auraiken (862386) | more than 8 years ago | (#13928707)

I think the whole standing concept is so they people don't play for too long and get cramps/bad posture and whatnot. Keeps them moving around and active. Also helps stop hogging of machines. If they want to sit down or eat, they move over to the dining area and grab a snack.

:( Yet another reason to be Japanese. (1)

This just screams, "Go die, Westerners!" I wonder if the Koreans can match this?

Frank's 2000-inch TV (1)

and one gigantic 200-inch big screen TV where players can weep knowing that they will never be able to have this kind of setup in their own home.

"That's the second biggest TV [engadget.com] I've ever seen."

And still not as big as Frank's 2000 inch TV [lyrics.ly].

Japanese people like Japanese videogame machines.. (2)

andrewski (113600) | more than 8 years ago | (#13928842)

I hope MS realizes that it will take excellent, Japanese-targeted games to sell the 360. The whole swanky-dank lounge idea will get people to play around with a 360, but the Japanese fans won't buy it until they can get their regionally targeted games.

KDR_11k (778916) | more than 8 years ago | (#13930364)

They've signed on so many japanese developers I wonder why you are still asking.

andrewski (113600) | more than 8 years ago | (#13930450)

I seem to recall the same response a few years ago when I was critical of the Xbox and its success in Japan.

Give it a year or two. I bet dollars to doughnuts that for every xbox 360 game that gets released we see 40 or 50 for the PS3, plus all the PS2 and PSX games that are backwards compatible with it.

Hardly swanky! (4, Funny)

You'd think with all that cash, Microsoft would at least fix that hole in the ceiling.

It's not a bug, it's a feature that just happens to be trademarked and showing through a...broken...ceil...d'oh!

Xbox 360 is bringin' down the house!

No, seriously. We need a contractor in here.

Lame (0, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#13929453)

Honestly Microsoft, whatever.

Will this huge waste of money fix:

1) The horrendous jaggies 360 games have because you were too cheap to include more than 10MB of EDRAM?

2) The utterly retarded less space than last gen storage format for the 360?

3) The fucked up two skus that made sure that developers don't give a shit about utilizing the harddrive?

4) The lack of backwards compatibility? No 'ports' of 'best selling' xbox games doesn't count...

5) The pathetically weak hardware? Gotta love those preview shots of 360 games where people mistake them for xbox games...

6) The ripoff prices of 360 items? Or are we funding stupid stuff like this lounge with our purchases?

I really don't know what to fuck to think Microsoft thinks they are accomplishing in the console market.

At least it took me a few page downs to get to this terrible post.

Thankfully you faggots seem to be more and more in the minority as time goes on.

Re:Lame (1)

Saige (53303) | more than 8 years ago | (#13933310)

Bitching about the memory of the 360 when the PS3 and Revolution look to come with LESS?

Complaining about the lact of backcompat when anyone who has paid attention knows the 360 WILL be backcompat through emulation?

Talking about jaggies and looking like Xbox 1 games when anyone who's seen footage of Kameo or PGR3 knows that neither of those comments are anywhere even close to true?

Oh, yeah, this is Slashdot. It's insightful because it's anti-MS, where facts don't matter when it's a means to bash Microsoft.

The hype just might save them (0)

If only they could figure out a way to make those pesky blu-rays disappear...

200-inch big screen TV (2, Interesting)

MMaestro (585010) | more than 8 years ago | (#13929632)

Very nice but, why not put that screen to good use and run some tournaments on it? That'd be a good way to attact people even if the games they'll demonstrate are just ported from the Xbox.

Evil Chili Pepper (1)

Taulin (569009) | more than 8 years ago | (#13929735)

What is funny is most people don't know that that third picture down's evil chili pepper is an advertisement for a brand of chips. I kind of hate them. Strange round spicy crispy things... Putting this on my list to visit.

Hostesses Kudasai! (0, Offtopic)

blueZhift (652272) | more than 8 years ago | (#13929882)

and after hours the site even serves up alcoholic beverages

And if these are being served up by lovely hostesses as well, it's time to buy a ticket to Tokyo! I wonder if they'll play games with the guests as well, video games that is...

Somehow reading this news post from an old 12" CRT makes me feel all woozy inside. . .

A few questions... (1)

nickyj (142376) | more than 8 years ago | (#13931356)

1. Why didn't they use the wireless controllers at the two sofa areas?

2. How long do they plan to keep this lounge around?

3. What's in the round circle between the controllers in the kiosk?

4. Operating hours?

5. How long are you allowed to play before they boot you off one of the systems?

Re:A few questions... (1)

devilsadvoc8 (548238) | more than 8 years ago | (#13932847)

1- Prob to reduce theft
2- Good Q
3- Looks like directions/guide for the controllers
4- Call them up
5- I bet an honor system

MS has done this before in Japan - DIDN'T HELP (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#13933649)

Yeah, swanky cafes do great for selling games and systems, almost as well as kicks to the crotch. How so quickly we all forget the recent past.

Dateline: October 5, 2002 [impress.co.jp]

Looks like a nice place, right? How many original Xboxes were sold in Japan, again?

File this under WTF (2, Insightful)

Bellum Aeternus (891584) | more than 8 years ago | (#13934265)

That's a lot of expensive floor space in Japan. M$ is sure spending the cash to try and impress the Japanese, who are renowned for their nationalistic brand awareness. So we (Americans) get stuck going to WalMart to check out 360s while the Japanese get a dedicated lounge, despite the fact that we're going to be the vast majority of their customer base?

Is my finger twirling bothering anyone? (1)

Winterblink (575267) | more than 8 years ago | (#13934346)

This is all nice and all, but how are the GAMES? There's plenty of folks in there playing things, are there any opinions from them as to what games are worth buying? Or whether the 360 is even worth the effort at this point?
