Kong Lives!

Zonk posted more than 8 years ago | from the kind-of-defeats-the-message-of-the-film dept.

eToyChest is reporting that, if you play your cards right in the game version of the Kong film, King Kong might return home the end of the game. Apparently the designers thought people wouldn't want to play if they already knew the ending. From the article: "To unlock the alternate ending, players must complete the entire game and then go back and play through various maps and earn a total of 250,000 points. Other unlockable features include several Weta Digital concept art galleries, interviews with both Peter Jackson and Phillipa Boyens, an "old movie" filter, a King Kong theatrical trailer and more."

Not that this isn't neat or anything, but like, what? Who cares? Mod me as flamebait or whatever if you want, it just seems like choosing to report this out of all the game news out there is sort of odd. Where's the rationale for talking about this, instead of anything else?

Re:Uh, great? (2, Funny)

Yst (936212) | more than 8 years ago | (#14313668)

Well, it's better than a King Kong Hot Coffee mod story about how to go about unlocking Kong-themed erotic content, or a revelation that beating the game in under an hour lets you see Kong waving at you in a bathing suit.

Re:Uh, great? (4, Funny)

game kid (805301) | more than 8 years ago | (#14313698)

Yeah. But replace "Kong waving at you in a bathing suit" with "Naomi Watts waving at you in a bathing suit" and I'd take the task with all the patience and sloth of a Saleen S7.

you know the honest truth is he's right, this story is a bunch of advertising bullshit. I cant see what if any value finding out that you can go home instead of dying in a big furry pile has to most of us who come here for industry news. If I wanted to know about a secret ending I could go to gamespot, I come to Slashdot to get gaming news not the new secret tips.

Re:Uh, great? (3, Interesting)

joystickgenie (913297) | more than 8 years ago | (#14314306)

Your right, this isn't news. It is an advertisement.

Is it just me or has this game gotten way more media time then anything else? I'm sure the guys in the marketing team are doing a good job but it seems like it is more then that. The media has grabbed this title like it is the next coming of Jesus.

To be quite honest. This has been pushed so much I was kinda hoping it would flop.

Soybean47 (885009) | more than 8 years ago | (#14317804)

I have a feeling this got posted because of a recent Penny Arcade. http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/12/05 [penny-arcade.com]

In the news post associated with that comic, there is a complaint about how, in this game, you face an unwinnable scenario. Then there's a brief correction posted at the end, that just pretty much says "Oh, I guess there's an alternate ending where Kong doesn't die."

I read that, and was thinking, "What? He doesn't die? What does happen? Does he, in fact, just climb back down?" I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was still wondering about this. ;)

So yeah. Personally, I welcomed this Slashdot post. It's entirely possible, though, that Slashdot wasn't the ideal location for it.

Re:Uh, great? (1)

TychoCelchuuu (835690) | more than 8 years ago | (#14318450)

But that comic's news post had Gabe discussing an email he got that TOLD HIM ABOUT THE SECRET ENDING.

Re:Uh, great? (1)

Soybean47 (885009) | more than 8 years ago | (#14318834)

Wait. What? Isn't that what I said? I mean, I didn't mention that it was Gabe that said it (I couldn't remember, and I'm a huge slacker), and I didn't mention that he learned about it by email (it just didn't seem relevant), but... what are you getting at, exactly?

Re:Uh, great? (1)

TychoCelchuuu (835690) | more than 8 years ago | (#14318919)

Oh, I read your post and thought you said the opposite. Oh well. Long story short, Slashdot doesn't need to post everything PA does. The end.

If Kong works hard enough and lives long enough, he becomes another remade classic character [imdb.com] and HE TAKES THEIR BULLETS!!1 in a cocaine-filled rage. Or maybe not, but it's still fun to think of a cokehead gorilla who likes blondes.

Easter eggs don't count as news (2, Insightful)

kongjie (639414) | more than 8 years ago | (#14313738)

And nor does this "alt ending" that is neither interesting nor innovative. It's not even particularly clever.

As such, it shouldn't have made the cut.

Re:Easter eggs don't count as news (1)

Golias (176380) | more than 8 years ago | (#14315405)

What would be news-worthy is if a blockbuster-action-movie-based console game actually turned out to be fun.

Every one I've ever played is a total piece of steamy, brown, nutty, moist, dogshit, and I suspect that's likely to be the case here, too. In the rare cases where I bothered to buy them, I always ended up wishing I hadn't.

Yes, Knights of the Old Republic, too. T3h. suck.

Oh, and that game with the hot ninja chick in the short red kimono... That was a another disaster.

Using sex or nerdy movies as a hook to draw my interest is all fine and dandy, but could somebody please bother to come up with a game worth playing while they are at it!?!?!?

Hey console makers? Want to raise prices? Fine. Make games that are worth it. I'd gladly pay $80 for a good game rather than pay $40 each for two games which are likely to stink on ice.

Oh, and Rockstar? Knock that LA Gangs shit off and get back to the heart and soul of the GTA franchise: Dago mobsters shooting the hell out of everything. I want to play a spaghetti-eating gangster in pinstripes driving cool sports cars and blowing up buildings, not some "street-wise" retard on a bicycle.

Thank you.

Re:Easter eggs don't count as news (1)

Lord_Dweomer (648696) | more than 8 years ago | (#14317011)

Here's another easter egg...

If the PR person for the game scores 500 more posts on news sites, they get a big bonus!

To whoever handles their marketing, if you're reading this...the sole reason why I will NEVER buy this game and will discourage my friends from getting it is because it has been overhyped and you've attempted to shove it down our throats. Gamers will always reject this kind of marketing crap, and if a game is worthwhile, we will find out about it. The same is VERY true of the opposite. If this movie-based game sucks (and from what I've heard and seen it does) then gamers will also find out about it no matter how many story submissions you get posted on Slashdot.

This should be used in other games... (4, Funny)

CanSpice (300894) | more than 8 years ago | (#14313746)

They should think about this for other games that are based on movies. For example, if you manage to score 500,000 points without going through any warp smokestacks, the Titanic doesn't sink. Or if you manage to kill everybody in Star Wars: Galaxies using only the force-grip-throw-off-a-cliff-or-into-a-wall thing you get to go back in time and slap George Lucas around so he leaves the movie industry directly after the release of Return of the Jedi to go live in a commune in Montana, sparing us horror of the Special Editions and the prequels.

Can I please slap him after American Graffiti? The original Star Wars trilogy was decent and all, but the acting and dialogue was atrocious. He is still a horrible writer, as shown in the latest trilogy. It's really sad when his dialog makes (normally) good actors like Liam Neeson, Ewan Macgregor, and Natalie Portman look like they have all the charisma of a piece of wood.

Does the game suck?

Re:A more important issue... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#14320294)

Not sure if your question was rhetorical, but anyway here's my quick take....

It sucked because:
1. length - I finished it in about 7 hours so I feel like I did not get my money's worth.
2. Playing as King Kong - controls are child like, King Kong is not an impressive looking character
3. the final level is a joke.

On the other hand, my 5 & 6 year old both LOVE it because it's easy enough for them to play with almost no help from me and it scares them just enough for it to be fun for them.

Uh... spoiler alert? (3, Informative)

Sv-Manowar (772313) | more than 8 years ago | (#14316781)

It's good to see developers taking their own decisions, games that allow your actions to chose the endings are some of the best. It makes it a lot more interesting when a decision you make early on in the game effects it a lot later on and means that the game has a lot more appeal to replay it through a couple of times finding the different endings and more.

Good job to the developers on this one.

It would've been with some thought (1)

ianscot (591483) | more than 8 years ago | (#14318714)

It makes it a lot more interesting when a decision you make early on in the game effects it a lot later on

Okay, but this one sounds more like a "get 40 rebounds in a game and you unlock Wilt Chamberlain's shoes" perk from an NBA game to me. I agree with you, what you're describing sounds nice, but games mostly make it happen based on some arbitrary point total or something. (Those 250,000 points mean nothing to me playing as Kong. I want a big banana -- hey, maybe that commuter train.)

When things like that happen organically, that's when it works great. The whole open world thing from GTA got its appeal because it seemed to go a little that way, but really it's not a generational thing. Some pretty old school games like Escape Velocity (a flat-screen space RPG, sort of) and the old Fallout series manage to give you real influence over how things occur, and have endless subplots and quests that affect each other, and character traits that affect whether you can get the different branches.

Probably it has to be a basic design choice for this to work well. Otherwise it's just this sort of patched-on, alternate ending deal... Go back home? What about the one where he sticks with the program and becomes a big Broadway hit, touring with the Rockettes in his dotage?
