Some of us work weekends, whether it's NOC-type shift work, or whether it's just extra work that needs to be done because hey, we're geeks, and we make the world go 'round.

I'm in a NOC with half a dozen people sitting around me and not even cubicle divisions for privacy. They don't say anything about me reading Slashdot, and haven't yet made any funny comments about me reading some pink website all day, but I'm sure glad nobody was looking when a cartoon cock popped up on my screen.

Seriously... At work and you're browsing a _very_ pink /. site and clicked on a link to a site selling UNICORN T-SHIRT's.

A penis would only help improve your abysmal image at work, even in the form of an unicorn's phallic symbol.

Women in computing (2, Interesting)

DebbaDog (941731) | about 8 years ago | (#15041603)

I just went to a conference on women in technology. This post does not bode well for their future. When I realized it was a April Fool's joke, I admit I got a kick out of it. We (the men) won't see women enter the tech world until we take them seriously. Pink and ponies is not taking them seriously. The ultimate April Fool's joke that Slashdot could do? The ultimate irony? They chose women in technology.

Re:Women in computing (1)

Corlawc (939990) | about 8 years ago | (#15041643)

I completely agree. I, and several of my female engineering friends, have been reading Slashdot for a long time now. Though I do find it funny, I will admit that I find it somewhat disconcerting to have the gender balance thrown in my face. Yes, I am a female techno-geek, but my least favorite color is pink and unicorns are for children. Good joke, bad taste.

Re:Women in computing (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 8 years ago | (#15041686)

But, The best jokes _are_ in bad taste!!

I mean, when I saw this rendition of slashdot I smacked my forehead and hung my head in shame. but it was STILL funny! Bad jokes are inherently funny just because they're bad jokes.

Re:Women in computing (1)

caffeination (947825) | about 8 years ago | (#15041689)

This is a joke about pre-pubescent female myspacers. You think that counts as women in IT? WITTY REPARTEE

So far today: gays, women. Anyone else want to step up to the plate? As a scholarly-successful white middle-class secular heterosexual male European student, I have no concept of sensitivity, and I'm dishing out teh pwnage to other successful white middle-class people who think they're going to let their stupid bitching ruin a perfectly good April 1st.

Re:Women in computing (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 8 years ago | (#15041720)

Quite right. I'm a female science geek, hate pink (I think subconsciously I associated it with all the girly stuff I was expected to like, as a little girl, but didn't) and, while I did find the whole thing (OMG Ponies pink theme, and penicorn site) really funny at first glance, it does bother me a bit. Yeah, good joke, but not so good PR to the ladies in your readership. Not saying you have to go all politically correct and shit, but do make an effort to go easy on the gender stereotypes, mmkay?

Re:Women in computing (1)

Ima Cow (174673) | about 8 years ago | (#15041938)

This is a pretty funny April Fools joke. Partially because this kind of attitude/behavour is currently so prevalent. While it is disparaging to women, it is more of a satirical commentary on current society, an unfortunate aspect of society. Females are discouraged to go into any of the sciences. I have had relatives tell me "Why are you in engineering, isn't that a guy thing? That would be too hard for you." That was said to me *not* in jest. This April Fools joke is in done in good humor, so don't be hard on the editors. They have already beat the uber loner geek stereotype into the ground.

Re:Women in computing (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 8 years ago | (#15041937)

give us photos of your cunt!

Looking for your pedestal? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 8 years ago | (#15041705)

Heh. Yeah. Right. Everything revolves around women. You can't do women jokes cause, hey, they are WOMEN jokes! Please. Everybody takes jokes as what they are, now if females want to be in a pedestal before they get into IT, fuck em. Peer level means peer level, being a woman does not confer untouchable status.

Now using your brain, just because a female does not like pink and thinks unicorns are childish, is there anything there to say that females in general don't like pink and unicorns? No. The same way, it can't be argued that in general they do. And if they did, so what?

Know what.. I'm fucking willing to bet six months salary that, statistically, females quite prefer pink and horses. Ask your female friends. And if they see you coming, just infer that you'd kill a couple horses for hide or bbq them and look at their indignant faces ("how could you! they are magical creatures!").

Like it or not either nature or society imbue, with a varying degree of intensity, certain preferences and values on males and females. So pink and horses.

Oh... and it takes big balls to wear pink and be a heterosexual male. :-)

Re:Women in computing (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 8 years ago | (#15041709)

I think the "women" that this theme is satirizing are roughly equivalent to your average Counter-Strike gamer or AOL chatrooms. It's not really related to females in tech in a professional sense. Now I suppose part of it is the social aspect -- you wouldn't want to go into an industry where your peers exclude you from social circles outside outside of work. Considering that this theme is My Little Pony, it's perhaps more representative of the start of the problem -- keeping young girls interested in pursuing technology as a career.

Re:Women in computing (1)

ObsessiveMathsFreak (773371) | about 8 years ago | (#15041883)

Pink and ponies is not taking them seriously.

Yet there are multinational companies that make billions by selling these concepts wholesale to young girls all over the world. Often these are the very same companies that sell GI Joe dolls to young boys.

The question here is why absorbsion with pink and unicorns is derided in an adult, whereas continued obsession with violence, guns and GI Joe dolls is not only accepted, but even looked upon as a virtue?

Why is one child taught that their play is derisable, and the other laudable?

Re:Women in computing (1)

This is the type of stuff I would expect in a link from a comment. But for a Slashdot Story it is pretty lowbrow even for Slashdot. For a site that is internationally know for tech news, to have a link like that part of the main story is not that good of an idea. Even for April 1

3. Profit!!!

CmdrTaco hunted down; brutaly torchered (1)

schwal (836247) | about 8 years ago | (#15041729)

After turning slashdot pink, CmdrTaco was hunted by an angry mob of geeks and "Given a taste of his own caffinated beverage." Reports indicate that he was forced to wach slashdot refresh at a seisure inducing rate with his eyelids propped open, all the while his eyes were slowly being gouged with hot soldering irons. When one member of the mob was asked if the treatment was a bit cruel, he responded asking "Have you SEEN the site today?" Cowboyneal was not avalible for comment.

I've got a great idea for next year's April Fool's Day; how about instead of all the usual escapades, pranks, frivolties, follies and tomfooleries, next year's 1st April edition of Slashdot is completely normal? nobody would be expecting an unfettered Slashdot experience; users would be scouring the whole site desperately searching, nay hoping, for some oh-so-subtle master-prank; because there are people who still find April Fool's fun/funny, right? right!? I didn't think so!

that said, those unicorn t-shirts are class!
