Microsoft Buys OpenOffice.org

CowboyNeal posted more than 8 years ago | from the right-price dept.

124

Micahel West writes "As reported on OpenOffice.org: 'For an undisclosed sum but reputed to be in the billions, Microsoft's Bill Gates has personally bought the leading open-source desktop project. Saying he "was sick and tired of open-source eating away at his profits," the world's richest man decided to put an end to the nuisance and simply buy OpenOffice.org. It will form part of a growing list of Microsoft acquisitions including several erstwhile competitors, a considerable number of prominent politicians, and a few small governments.'"

That's getting a bit close... (4, Insightful)

It would have been funnier if this hadn't been exactly what Symantec did with Sygate (buy it to kill it)..

But what would the House Subcommittee on Proprietary Office Suites and Antitrust Accusations [house.gov] say about this?

Keywords: Antitrust, broadband, client, distributed, GTK, Java, OGG Vorbis, onion routing, open source, PowerPC.

Its been April 2nd for four hours here in sunny...uh, still dark Australia. And pink still isn't funny.

OK, I suggest everyone emails Cmdr Taco with a one word message:

"Subtlety!"

And if he doesn't get it, we should round up a posse to rivet a brass plaque with "Subtlety" engraved on it to his forehead.

Re:Honestly... (2, Insightful)

bcmm (768152) | more than 8 years ago | (#15042370)

No it isn't believable. OpenOffice is GPL. It cannot be bought out because it's source is freely available, and because any modifications made are also GPL, so if the project theoretically could be bought, people could still have anything that came out of it free (both meanings).

About Time (1)

XFilesFMDS1013 (830724) | more than 8 years ago | (#15042101)

Seriously, its about time, I mean, everyone knows that Microsoft is evil, at least now they have the balls to admit it. If we're lucky, during the next few days, Microsoft will buy out every major open-source project out there. And maybe buy out Apple as well. Then we won't have to worry about drivers and such not working on our machines, becuase there'll only be one machine! Great days are ahead, I can tell!

Re:About Time (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#15042180)

It's a strange fact that all those evil companies have such nice logo's (Microsoft, Yahoo, Apple, Google?)

And all kind of opensource projects FIREFOX (in Asian a fox isn't a positiv animal, and now it is taking over the world, scary thought). Then we have GNOME (well don't want to have a TROLL everywhere do we?). How about FREEBSD (let's have a devil everywhere, not a nice thought either). Don't know what that is when you look at OPENBSD (don't want to have that around either). I thought KDE had some dragon (well in Asia some are okay, but here in the West, I haven't seen a nice one, haven't seen any for that count). If searching a little harder, a lot of other not that nice animals come up....

Well it how that say: Looks can be deceiving ?

SparksMcGee (812424) | more than 8 years ago | (#15042104)

Wouldn't Bill Gates prefer to buy something that represented a product that was actually better than his? Has he ever USED OO.org? Try typing in special characters using the keypad some time. Will it shift the cursor back and print nothing? print the character and delete the one before it? Work as planned? Do nothing at all? Call the space-aliens and tell them earth is ripe for the plucking as everyone struggles to use the bloated file formats? It's a mystery!

Foxpro (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#15042263)

He did several times. One example is Foxpro, which despite being purchased by M$ is still an excellent database, so therefore it's relegated to being hidden in the attic.

I could understand MS chucking Access into the dumpster when the bought Foxpro, but have to admit that I don't understand the current situation. I cannot see the sense into pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into a failed product like Access when has owned Foxpro since before Access became common.

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#15042286)

Do you realize that the only reason it's hard for other programs to interoperate with Microsoft products (such as Microsoft Word) is that Microsoft goes out of their way to MAKE IT HARD TO INTEROPERATE by refusing to document their file formats, and changing the format with every version....right?

If Microsoft (who I remind you is a CONVICTED ABUSIVE MONOPOLY) would cease their ILLEGAL, anticompetitive behaviour, then it maybe their competitors would find it much easier to produce interoperable products.

Let's see Microsoft try to compete on quality, features and price---rather than FUD and proprietary lock-in.

NtroP (649992) | more than 8 years ago | (#15042125)

Hey guys, the whole idea of an April Fool's joke is that it's supposed to be believable. I would have bought the OpenSSH one if someone had posted a thoughtful article on a security page. Perhaps peppering enough clues to it's being a fake so that those "real" admins would know it was false because the exploit described was not plausible, while the "wannabies" spent their Saturday at work combing the net for the patch and filling up forums with "OMG, WTF?! I can't find a patch for my Ubuntu web server!"

The saddest part is, this is the most believable story yet.

Re:Enough already! (1)

Believable?

Tell that to all the creationists who were all too ready to believe that, after three months of constant arguing, I actually converted and accepted their arguments.

TeknoHog (164938) | more than 8 years ago | (#15042251)

You can always use the 'light' stylesheet from /. settings. I can't bear to read this site otherwise, not matter what the color scheme.

Besides, I think the pink theme is actually rather funny, at least when compared to all the other April fool's jokes that have been posted here today.

Easy solution (1)

x_codingmonkey_x (839141) | more than 8 years ago | (#15042408)

An easy solution to the pink is to go grab the Slashdotter firefox extension [mozilla.org] . It allows you to change the scheme of every slashdot page. I never actually used that feature until they put up the pink theme and my eyes started to bleed. I'm using the Linux theme.

Just a note, there is still a little bit of pink left on the site since I guess the extension doesn't change everything.

Firewalker_Midnights (943814) | more than 8 years ago | (#15042153)

Who would want something free when you can pay for it? I mean, how well can something free work when microsoft spends millions in research and development creating that fantastic suite known as Microsoft Office.

Finally, OpenOffice will get all the research it needs to be the best. Maybe Microsoft will smarten up and buy Linux next, I hate that crappy OS.

Any Program or OS that doesn't crash must be a rootkit, that's the only logical explanation!

Google Desktop Search doesn't index openofficedocs (1)

quokkapox (847798) | more than 8 years ago | (#15042157)

This is the only thing that's really keeping me from switching over completely to openoffice. It's sort of annoying that my old legacy xls files and doc files get indexed by google desktop search, while everything new I create and everything I re-save in openoffice (ods/odt) format, doesn't get indexed. I really wish google would get with it and fix that. Like, today. OMG they don't even support an OPEN SOURCE format LOL!!!1

Disclaimer: This post is entirely serious and has nothing to do with invisible pink unicorns.

Slashdot forges forward on April Fool's day with a slew of half-assed stories that seem completely implausible in an attempt to "fool" the masses. It seems apparent that they've misunderstood the point of the day, churning out endless crap rather that crafting a well thought out april fool's joke. The key to a solid April fools joke is creating something that people would actually swallow. Painting everything pink and going "ZOMG" doesn't quite fit in that. I'd challenge you next year to actually put some thought into it. This idea seems the result of a drunken kegger. You might craft various sources, maybe set up a few fake domains with stories on them to really build up the believability.

The OpenOffice development team announced today that they had formed a new development team to work on a fork of OpenOffice, which will be called OpenOpenOffice. The team leader was quoted as saying, "We will use the profits from the sale of OpenOffice to continue the tradition of excellent open-source office software." Richard Stallman disparaged the new project, stating that "It's not free software."

I love Bill and everything Microsoft but I am not sure if I will be able to use this software until it retails for at least $599. AFWIW, I think I am having Bill's child, even though I am a man, and ever since cowboys have come out of the closet I am OK telling people...

This would be funnier if in real life this wouldn't make Linus Torvald's so happy!

Related News: GPL3 Changes Allow Closed Source (1)

In related nows, RMS announced that the new GPL3 (and LGPL3) would alow users to go closed source. Speaking from his new 40ft yacht (he still hasn't explained where it came from) near his new Martha's Vinyard mansion (ditto), he announced "Linux was having a hissy fit over DRM, so I decided 'oh, why bother?'."

Asked if this meant that he was abandoning the Free Software Crusade, RMS replied I still think that Open Source is a Good Idea(tm), I'm just tired of being the whipping boy of Linus and Perens and others who think that I'm too radical. If they want Open Source, they can have it, but they're not gonna have stickly Dick to slap around any more.

When asked about his new 'toys', Stallman only said "The foundation needs these things to do good lobbying, and we finally got a donation big enough to allow the purchase. There's nothing untoward going on here". In response to further questioning on the line, he walked this reporter to the door and butted him out with his newly implanted horns.

When told about this new development, Perens threw a chair at this reporter and screamed "I've killed Open BSSD and I'll kill Gnu too!!" then chased him off the grounds with a smoking barbecue fork.

When reached by phone, Linus simply said "Yeah, whatever. I'll deal with it tomorrow".

Western concepts (1)

The reason some people do not understand April 1st and other days of signifigance to the Westernised world is because those days are just that, Westernised. Just try saying to somebody in Eastern europe (and even northern and central europe for that matter) that opening an umbrella indoors is bad luck, they will look at you like you are stupid. I know I have had this happen to me. Same for the number 13 and so on. So please do not flame those that do not understand that these are jokes.

Why doesn't Bill Gates get that he can't win against open source with his old monopoly tactics? Open Office is open source, so we will just branch it and keep developing it and using it for free.

wow.. i thought i was misreading my google personalized homepage when i saw that headline.. very stupid indeed, considering millions already have openoffice downloaded to their computer.. not to mention, tons of people that can manipulate and understand the code well enough to continue to make it better..

he might as well buy all of Earth while he's at it.. because there's always going to be something or someone that "cuts in to his profits" simply because they want the majority of people, especially poor people, to actually use software.. GOOD JOB BILL!! Yes, PLEASE DON'T LET THOSE DISGUSTING POOR PEOPLE USE YOUR SOFTWARE!! GEESH!! WHAT HAVE WE BEEN THINKING ALL THESE YEARS?!?! THEY DON'T DESERVE TO USE A COMPUTER!!! BECAUSE THEY'RE CUTTING IN TO YOUR PROFITS!!
