Geeks vs. Nerds (2, Funny)

Geeks vs. Nerds.. Can't we all just get along?

apparently not when there's a golden penguin at stake.

Yarrrrrrrr! (1)

Spy der Mann (805235) | about 8 years ago | (#15078006)

Yeah, but I don't care about geeks or nerds. Where's the pirates vs. ninjas cup?

Re:Yarrrrrrrr! (1)

StarvingSE (875139) | about 8 years ago | (#15078023)

Pirates are waaaay better than ninjas on several points:

1) They drink grog
2) They sport tricorn hats
3) Have pet parrots
4) they say arrrrrrrrr

Man I can't wait until sept 19th.......

Ryan Amos (16972) | about 8 years ago | (#15078265)

But ninjas totally flip out and chop peoples heads off.

I bet that tricorn hat looks really good when it is sitting on top of the stump you now have for a neck. >:(

Hehe, I tried to get my fiance to marry me on Sept 19. I thought we could go tho the Pirate ship place (Pirates of the Caribbean??) in Las Vegas, be married by a pirate captain, on a pirate ship, and do the ceremony in pirate talk. I told her it was the only way I would get married in Vegas.

I'm not sure if I could have gone through with it if she had said yes, but it was a safe bet she wouldn't. It would have definatly been memorable though.

"Oracle did buy all our transactional backends..." (0, Flamebait)

Me, I've switched to Postgres.

I aint no 'Fucking FANBOY' and ive recently switched to postgres, while mysql has alot going for it (and i prefer to use it, mysqldump rocks), have you read its licencing lately? alot of traps for anyone with a commercial product that needs a database.

with postgresql available, i've never quite understood why anyone would use mysql.

Ziff davis need to learn javascript (2, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | about 8 years ago | (#15078020)

putting a 320x200 on its own individual 40kb server generated page ? why not use the Image().src object and an array, its not like its 1987 anymore, even webTV v1.0 supports the .src property.

Re:Ziff davis need to learn javascript (1, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | about 8 years ago | (#15078202)

Because that won't let me open the images in new tabs by simply middle clicking the "next image" link.

gnud (934243) | about 8 years ago | (#15078433)

The link could lead to a new page, and the onlick handler could use the solution proposed by GP. But point taken :)

Just to clarify (5, Informative)

CaymanIslandCarpedie (868408) | about 8 years ago | (#15078026)

As TFA states, it was actually people from Sleepy Cat (which Oracle just bought) and not "really" Oracle competing and it was the Sleepy Cat team that was introduced as the Berkley DB company Oracle is about to kill not MySQL. Didn't seem that confusing in the article, but maybe the posters and editors thought the other sounded better?

Re:Just to clarify (2, Informative)

puppetman (131489) | about 8 years ago | (#15078124)

And Sleepy Cat wrote the BDB engine.

And it didn't say Oracle was about to kill MySQL, just the BDB engine, one of several engines inside the MySQL database.

Oracle also bought the InnoDB storage engine, a far more ominous aquisition, as InnoDB is the engine you use if you want to use MySQL as a real database.

I thought the summary (and the posters and editors) actually pretty accurate. Jeremy Allison, of Samba I believe, said exactly what the summary said he did.

Re:Just to clarify (1)

Jamesday (794888) | about 8 years ago | (#15081766)

Since Oracle and MySQL just renewed that InnoDB contract there seems little reason to have major concerns about InnoDB for at least the next few years.

Re:Just to clarify (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 8 years ago | (#15078141)

TFA can't decide which team are the geeks, and which are the nerds. I feel for the submitter.

Re:Just to clarify (1)

Hard_Code (49548) | about 8 years ago | (#15078894)

Actually the article was very confusing. At one point it refers the the nerd team as the MySQL team (http://news.zdnet.co.uk/0,39020330,39261695-4,00. htm [zdnet.co.uk]), after previously introducing the nerd team as the Oracel (BDB) team. Then in the last picture is says that the nerd team had a strong lead but the mysql team came back and won. The picture actually depicts the Oracle nerd team with trophies. So it's anybody's guess what the fuck is going on. I know it's trivial, but that type of shit bugs the hell out of me.

Re:Just to clarify (1)

Jamesday (794888) | about 8 years ago | (#15081756)

The description at the start was wrong. The Nerds were the MySQL plus IBM team and that's the team shown holding the trophy. I've had the pleasure of spending many hours with Brian Aker of MySQL and couldn't miss his classic look.

Raw nerves? (1)

cerberusss (660701) | about 8 years ago | (#15078230)

UUh, raw nerves? Oracle has a history of buying and killing off products. If Jeremy could hit Sleepy Cat team's raw nerves at this moment, what were they thinking of when selling off to Oracle?

Re:Raw nerves? (1)

hey! (33014) | about 8 years ago | (#15079723)

If Jeremy could hit Sleepy Cat team's raw nerves at this moment, what were they thinking of when selling off to Oracle?

Maybe, "Damn, the bosses are selling us out"?

Unless they all had stock options to exercise.

Nobody? (2, Funny)

4D6963 (933028) | about 8 years ago | (#15078793)

Host Jeremy Allison hit a few raw nerves with the opposing Oracle team, introducing them as members of the Berkeley DB product line, 'which Oracle will soon kill.'

And nobody has made a Steve Ballmer joke yet? OK, looks like I'll have to do it myself this time.

Ahem.. At that point, Mr. Allison picked up a chair and threw it across the stage hitting a spectator in the public. Mr. Allison then said: "Fucking Larry Ellison is a fucking pussy. I'm going to fucking bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I'm going to fucking kill Oracle."

Re:Nobody? (4, Informative)

Jeremy Allison - Sam (8157) | about 8 years ago | (#15080668)

Actually I did make a Steve Ballmer chair joke. That was the bonus question on the "Sample" round where I'm teaching them how to play the game. The question was "Why does Scott McNealy look so relaxed in this picture [with Ballmer]" ?
Answer : Because Ballmer is sitting on the chair and it doesn't come easily to hand as a weapon :-).
But then I laugh at my own jokes (I know I shouldn't :-).

Yep. This makes my Day. year even. VERY FUNNY! Eat heck Oracle while MySQL is so great. Other databases are lame and soon the worlds banks and missile defense agencies will use MySQL too. yeah Slashdot rocks.

Kick them Oracle pussies. Hah! LINUS IS NEXT TO G0D!!! And each version of MySQL is a disciple!
