E3 On Xbox Live Leads With Lost Planet

Zonk posted more than 8 years ago

Next week all 360 owners can look forward to a free week of Xbox Live 'Gold service'. During the E3 events, dozens of pieces of downloadable content will be available via the service. Gamespot reports that this content will include a demo of the Capcom action-shooter Lost Planet. From the article: "One of the most anticipated titles tentatively set to ship for the 360 this year is Epic Games' Gears of War. While no demo for the third-person shooter will be made available, Microsoft will 'debut the first-ever Gears of War high-definition game trailer' on Xbox Live Marketplace. Several movie trailers will also be made available, as well as 'a flood of HD trailers from games that have yet to be announced.'"

Free week for existing Gold members? (2, Interesting)

TommydCat (791543) | more than 8 years ago | (#15249399)

I think I fit under the "all 360 owners", but they already have my money: I don't see how it's going to be "free" to me.

In fact they've been giving away a bunch of free weekends, so it seems... Doesn't this devalue the service for paying members?

Ask those of us who subscribe to the "premium" movie channels that have to sit through every "free preview week/weekend".

This type of "offer" is nothing new.

As someone who very recently subscribed for a year of XBL Gold, I'm inclined to agree with you. If they were to also extend our Gold subs by a week thanks to this promotion it would make sense, but right now the free weekend gets me nothing.

Holy Moly! (2, Insightful)

Ryz0r (849412) | more than 8 years ago | (#15249411)

Another shooter on the 360?! I never saw that one coming.. Between upcoming games this and GoW and Halo 3, I cant imagine how the 360 isnt selling better than any console before it! I mean, the range of games is so diverse!

Seriously, i thought microsoft were trying to make the Xbox 360 seem less 'hardcore', when are the games for the casual gamers going to show up?

autoacat (971948) | more than 8 years ago | (#15249454)

Viva Pinata is supposedly going to be one of the most-marketed titles this year from Microsoft and they're going for a completely different demograph with that game.

Suddenly_Dead (656421) | more than 8 years ago | (#15249512)

Remember Blinx: Time Sweeper? Apparently they did (or were going to) put quite a large marketing force behind the game, hoping that Blinx would become somewhat of a mascot for the Xbox. That didn't pan out so well.

No matter how good it is, one game is not enough ...

Remember Nintendo got Metroid Prime (1 and 2), Resident Evil (0,remake, and 4), Eternal Darkness and many other 'Mature' games made for the Gamecube but was still maintained their steriotype. The fact that Halo 3 (which wont be released until summer 2007 at the earliest) will recieve 100 times the attention at E3 that Viva Pinata will demonstrates a serious problem; if Nintendo or Sony have a couple of their big games displayed (Zelda/Mario/Donkey Kong/Metroid for Nintendo, Grand Turismo/ Ico or Shadow of the Colosus/Killzone) it is considered an excellent E3, if Microsoft doesn't have Halo it's a failure.

When the Nintendo Wii is released.

They might say they are going after the casual gamer, but the casual gamer is still happy with his/her Xbox or PS2. Casual gamers don't go out and drop $400+ for a console they are going to play a couple hours a week, if that.

Or NES, for that matter.

I don't think it's supposed to be appealing to casual gamers, I think it's supposed to be a Wife Acceptance Factor thing - "Look honey, you can play Bejewled on it!"

Maybe once the price comes down, sure, but I think for right now it's the same idea behind releasing Phantom of the Opera as an HD-DVD launch title.

twistedsymphony (956982) | more than 8 years ago | (#15253152)

Honestly I'm of the opinion that anyone who bashes the lack of variety in the 360's current line up probably hasn't been paying attention. It seriously has quality titles in nearly every category. It's certainly more diverse then the line up that was available for most other consoles a few months after their launch.

And what would you consider to be a "casual gamer title"? Because by my definition there are plenty of those as well. I personally don't even like shooters, and I loathe the Halo series. Even still I own both an Xbox 1 and an Xbox 360 because they offer a strong showing of other games that I like to play. I wouldn't have bought a 360 if it didn't have the games I wanted to play, I didn't buy an Xbox 1 or a PS2 until they did, and I wont buy a PS3 or a Wii until they did.

As someone who owns almost every console made in the last 15 years, I can honestly say that the Xbox 360 is the only console I've ever purchased at launch, and ONLY because it offered the games I wanted... AT LAUNCH.

If you're wondering what titles prompted me to buy the console at launch: PGR3 and Condemned, with the promise of DOA4 and Oblivion soon after launch.

GmAz (916505) | more than 8 years ago | (#15253673)

I never mentioned the lack of titles. I enjoy the most indepth games to the most simple ones. My statement was based on price point. Its just too expensive for someone that wants to play bejeweled from time to time.

Re:Holy Moly! (1)

twistedsymphony (956982) | more than 8 years ago | (#15254634)

That's very true, But the console wont always be that expensive, Most consoles are too expensive for that type of person for the first year or two of it's life. But with those games there NOW it makes it easier to adopt into a household with a variety of different types of gamers.

Keeper (56691) | more than 8 years ago | (#15251961)

Yeah, the only games on the 360 are "shooters". Well, except for Amped, Bankshot Billards, Bejeweled, Blazing Angles, Burnout, Condemned, Crystal Quest, DOA4, Fight Night, Feeding Frenzy, FF11, Gauntlet, Geometry Wars, Backgammon, Hearts, Spaids, Hexic, Jewel Quest, Joust, Kameo, Tomb Raider, Madden, MLB 2k6, Marble Blast Ultra, Need for Speed, Outpost Kaloki, PGR3, Ridge Racer, Oblivion, Tiger Woods, Tony Hawk, Top Spin 2, Wik, or Zuma.

But, you know, who would want to count any of those anyway?

Re:Holy Moly! (1)

cluke (30394) | more than 8 years ago | (#15252879)

And how many of those are XBox360 exclusives?

Re:Holy Moly! (1)

Jearil (154455) | more than 8 years ago | (#15253052)

Blazing Angles, Condemned, Crystal Quest, DOA4, Feeding Frenzy, Geometry Wars, Hexic, Jewel Quest, Kameo, MLB 2k6? (I have no idea..), Outpost Kaloki, PGR3, Ridge Racer, Top Spin 2 (not sure on this one), and Wik.

I'd also like to add in that Rumble Roses is an exclusive, and several others have been announced like Enchanted Arms (already released in Japan), Lost Odyssey, and Blue Dragon.. all Japanese RPGs.

Re:Holy Moly! (1)

KDR_11k (778916) | more than 8 years ago | (#15254734)

Blazing Angels, Hexic, Outpost Kaloki and probably a few others have PC versions available.

Re:Holy Moly! (1)

KDR_11k (778916) | more than 8 years ago | (#15254788)

Oops, forgot the first one I noticed: Wik.

Re:Holy Moly! (1)

twistedsymphony (956982) | more than 8 years ago | (#15253066)

If you're only counting console exclusive:

Amped, Bankshot Billiards, Bejeweled, Blazing Angles, Burnout, Condemned, Crystal Quest, DOA4, Fight Night, Feeding Frenzy, FF11, Gauntlet, Geometry Wars, Hardwood Backgammon, Hardwood Hearts, Hardwood Spades, Hexic, Jewel Quest, Joust, Kameo, Tomb Raider, Madden, MLB 2k6, Marble Blast Ultra, Need for Speed, Outpost Kaloki, PGR3, Ridge Racer, Oblivion, Tiger Woods, Tony Hawk, Top Spin 2, Wik, Zuma.

Re:Holy Moly! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#15256030)

OK, So your point is:

7 Sports Games: Amped, Madden, MLB2K6, Tiger Woods, Tony Hawk, Top Spin 2, Bankshot Billiards
4 Racing Games: Burnout, Need for Speed, PGR3, Ridge Racer
2 Fighting Games: DoA4, Fight Night
13 Mindless Games: Bejeweled, Crystal Quest, Feeding Frenzy, Geometry Wars, Backgammon, Hearts, Spades, Hexic, Jewel Quest, Joust, Marble Blast Ultra, Wik, and Zuma.
1 MMO/RPG: Final Fantasy XI
3 Action/Adventure Games: Tomb Raider, Gauntlet, Outpost Kaloki
5 Shooters: Perfect Dark Zero, Call of Duty 2, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, Condemned, Quake 4

Looks to me that it's got (not counting crap XBLA games) the highest percentage of games being Sports titles. A close second would be Shooters.

P.S. - Nice job listing Condemned in a list of games that *isn't* a shooter, especially considering it is, without a doubt, a shooter.

Not really ragging on anyone, the list of games looks a lot more varied than I previously expected. But I never let *honesty*, *information*, or *facts* stop me from making an ass out of myself. I just do it AC-style.

Re:Holy Moly! (1)

Keeper (56691) | more than 8 years ago | (#15260840)

The "mindless" games you so easily dismiss are actually types of games that heavily appeal to the non-hardcore gaming audiance.

If you want to be really technical, you could classify FN3 as a sports title.

Outpost Kolaki is a simple RTS-like game.

GRAW belongs in the list of shooters (and is in my opinion one of the best titles released so far this year).

Your summary also dropped several titles from the list, including Oblivion and Kameo.

While you are free to have you own opinion, Condemned is technically classified as an Action game; the primary focus of the game is not "shooting" things. Shooter certainly isn't the first category that comes to my mind when attempting to classify that game anyway ...

Something to talk about (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#15249514)

Game trailers in HD on Live are nothing new. Now, if they had a Halo 3 demo downloadable via Live during the week of E3, THEN this would be something to talk about.

Nothing to see here, move along.

Re:Something to talk about (4, Insightful)

Keeper (56691) | more than 8 years ago | (#15249963)

The "new" is that you can download and watch these things at home as they're being shown at E3, instead of waiting for some advert laden webside to post a small 400x275 handheld recording off of a video screen that has the top of someone else's head in the middle of the picture.

How about just putting out War Gods of Gears 1.5 (0, Offtopic)

Two homonyms in the title? I had no idea what this article was about when I read the main page one-liner.

'lEd or 'led

trailers! (1)

OldZombie (921225) | more than 8 years ago | (#15251526)

I just love the concept of "trailers" I know I am beating a dead horse but why do I get the feeling what is shown in the trailers does not match up with what is in the game, now they have a new toy where they can play that game with us all over again. I agree with the diverse nature of the games though :-) -- This is not a signature...no seriously!
