Seattle Named Gamiest City 42

GameDailyBiz is reporting on a list compiled by Sperling's BestPlaces, in which the top videogaming cities in the country are named. They look at number of consoles per household, game rentals, games purchased, and amount of online gaming in the area. Seattle got top spot, followed by Minneapolis/St. Paul and Atlanta. From the article: "Microsoft and BestPlaces, citing results from 2005 Entertainment Software Association findings, also pointed to the increasing age of the average gamer and how the gender gap is narrowing. The average age of a gamer is now 30, and 19 percent of gamers are actually older than 50. While there are still more male than female gamers, it's not as lopsided as it once was. About 55 percent of players are male and approximately 43 percent are female."

I'd make the Unix joke, but I've already been in front of a firing squad today, once was enough.

Seattle is the gamiest city? How about taking a shower! Try some deodorant!
    • Someone is getting hot coffee tossed on them for that headline.

      a. Having the flavor or odor of game, especially game that is slightly spoiled.
      b. Ill-smelling; rank.
      2. Showing an unyielding spirit; plucky: a gamy little mare that loved to run.

      c. Sexually suggestive; racy.

So which definition is it that best describes seattle? I'm betting on
  • Ok, we always associate Redmond to Microsoft, but the original King of Video Games (Nintendo) also resides in Redmond.

Seeing as to how Redmond is, what, 30-50 miles away from Seattle, is it really a surprise that Seattle is Gamer's Haven?
On another note, here's an interesting bug [imageshack.us] (its an image) in Slashdot (I dont know what it means, but if Im to take a guess, I'm being informed of the upcoming story even though I'm not a subscriber -_-;;)

    The other 2% are CmdrTaco.

9 months of rain a year? Hell yeah I am going to play me some games...
    • MPLS/ST.Paul was number 2. It's cold there.
Atlanta was number 3. I've never been there, but I imagine it gets pretty hot and humid outside...

I think you're on to something.
      • Yeah, I live in Metro Atlanta and it can get very muggy here (although nowhere near as bad as Mobile Alabama) and several people I know from the north have said that in winter Atlanta is the coldest place they have been as it remains humid and the cold is much more biting and noticeable. My friends and I generally just kick back in the summers and game around the clock.
    • We do get a lot of seasonal rain here, especially in the fall, but the summers are amazing and vibrantly green. We have one of the most physically active populations with a huge percentage of people taking advantage of the extensive national park system in Washington State. As a result of this Seattle currently ranks 4th nationally in Sperling's best places for "Healthiest" city - San Francisco was 3rd with a similar climate.

Sure, people like to make jokes about the weather here in Seattle - but don't let
      • Shhh, stop it! Don't give things away... remember, the reason we tell people it rains so much here is to keep down the number of people moving to the area. If we stop doing that, word may get out that this is one of the best places to live in the country, and next thing you know, we're flooded with people!

I actually used to think people joked when they'd tell me that... then I kept hearing it from so many people, I think there's truth to it. The stories about the rain are deceptive - and one trip here i
  • Younger populations with good amounts of disposable income? Check. Lots of tech and financial services in these areas.

Crappy weather for a large portion of the year? Check (ATL is nasty in the summer, SEA has a little problem with cloud cover and rain for most of the year, and MN winters...).
    • And i just figured they had to do something after drinking all that coffee :)
    • let's not forget about phoenix (#5). arizona state mega-versity and a much younger is starting to move downtown. tons of disposable income. ATL may be nasty in the summer, but its already starting to crack 100 in phoenix (and don't give me the humidity argument, at least it cools down at night; it stays around 100 until about 2 in the morning). the heat will be probably let up around october. phoenix is perfect in the top 5.
  • The comment about 55% being male and 43% female, aside from being 2% short, has little meaning if they don't define how they're measuring those numbers. Are they just counting the number of people who've ever played a video game. Does that 43% female count any girl who's ever dropped a quarter into a pac-man machine at the bowling alley? I would imagine that if you looked at other measures of video gaming that males are still well in command, such as total hours spent playing video games, or amount of mo
  • I would have thought that honor would have been bestowed upon Staten Island. (Note: Read the headline to get the joke. Gamiest is a word but it's definition doesn't match anything related to video games.)
  • I tagged this as 'badmath' for having the percentages add up to 98%.

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Did someone secretly teleport Seattle to France when I wasn't looking?
  • My mom and my sister both play bejeweled, my grandma plays a slot machine game (religiously) so they're fucking up the averages.

PS - Redmond is much closer than 30-50 miles... more like 15-20. The Microsoft area is like a commune.

Oh, and we don't smell... That's Tacoma.
  • Not only is Silicon Valley and EA right below us, but SF houses the big three internet gamming sites, Gamespot, IGN and Gamespy, as well as EGM and 1up, along wiht all there sister and brother magazine and sites.
