Video and Transcripts of GPLv3 Event Now Online

H4x0r Jim Duggan writes "When Free Software Foundation Europe organised the recent GPLv3 conference in Barcelona, they recorded the whole two days on video, and have now put online the video and audio recordings. There's also a transcript of Richard Stallman's presentation, and of Eben Moglen's presentation, both of which include the Q&A sessions. The videos are all available by BitTorrent, so a slashdotting should be okay. Enjoy!"

Why is parent modded "Funny"? (-1, Offtopic)

Posted AC to see if I can get a "Funny" too.

Only one question, really... (1)

A barber chair, perhaps.

We decided to rename the "Liberty or Death" for the program clause to "No Surrendering Others' Freedom", which is a precise description of what it does. You're not allowed to surrender freedom on behalf of people who are going to get the program from you.

[a mobile phone rings]

If you are carrying a portable surveillance and tracking device, please turn it off. They have already tracked you here. They already know that you are listening to me, so there is no need for you to keep telling them that you are still here. And if they want to listen to what I am saying, we're going to publish the video recording anyway. They don't need to turn on your portable surveillance device to do it.

Now that we've established the ground rules, is Richard Stallman's beard going to have to choke a bitch?

...you know, that almost sounded like a pathetic troll attempt; then I R'd TFA and found out that he actually said that.

Scary shit.

Now if only everyone else would choke cellf0ne-lusing bitches with as much class as RMS did. Best part of the speech!

I know Eben Moglen personally (-1, Flamebait)

Anonymous Coward | more than 8 years ago | (#15713561)

I am a second-year student at Columbia Law. And I can tell you this: Eben Moglen is a FILTHY FUCKING HIPPIE whom everyone on campus avoids, without exception, whether he's waddling towards Hamilton Deli on 116th or shoveling another bowl of butter onto his tray at Lenfest Café. If only he practiced basic dental hygiene, the stench of STALLMAN'S FECULENT COCK spilling from his maw might be slightly less unbearable during lecture. The odor of ripe, fermenting open-source zealot is already nauseating enough.

Hmm, seems RMS has his ways with dry humour. ;)

Dear god, the horrors.... (2, Funny)

Richard Stallman said: "The GNU Emacs General Public License said all modified versions must be under the GNU Emacs General Public License. The GCC General Public Licence said all modified versions must be under the GCC General Public License. What if you wanted to merge Emacs and GCC?"

It would be in line with the core philosophy of Emacs, I admit, but oh, the horrors.

I guess you've never used Eclipse, which includes its own Java compiler. Doing so lets the IDE provide very good, immediate feedback while you're coding.

GNU GPL vs. DRM (1)

DrMorris (156226) | more than 8 years ago | (#15715598)

I don't have time to listen to the recordings yet, but I hope that they answer my concerns about the GNU GPL vs. DRM and why they think it's worth/needed to exclude software for DRM uses from the license. Some people argue that DRM has it's uses, some argue that it's a great danger to free software. I'm curious what the FSF guys have to say about DRM.

Re:GNU GPL vs. DRM (1)

jonwil (467024) | more than 8 years ago | (#15716254)

The GPL v3 does not exclude DRM, what it basicly says is that someone releasing code under GPL v3 is aggreeing not to sue under DMCA or similar laws if someone takes the GPL v3 code and figures out how it works (e.g. protected media content).

sad day (2, Insightful)

sTeF (8952) | more than 8 years ago | (#15717589)

i think this story demands a lot more comments than these few. this is history in progress (11 comments so far from posting, till my comment). the next gpl should and will hopefully revolutionize IT.

i understand that the transcripts are long, as well as the recordings. but for god sake, please these are the guys who will regulate some of our future.

btw i think that the ideas presented, and the process leading up to the next gpl are really fascinating. READ IT NOW!

please help (2, Informative)

H4x0r Jim Duggan (757476) | more than 8 years ago | (#15717940)

I'm glad you think these should be widely read or listened to. I've emailed all the mailing lists I'm on, and have submitted it to news sites such as slashdot. Please also spread these URLs around as much as possible. Thanks.

i'm actually thinking of burning the recordings to cd/dvd and make it mandatory for all my friends to view them :)

belittling advocacy (2, Insightful)

poptones (653660) | more than 8 years ago | (#15727706)

I don't know if this would be good viewing material for someone not familiar with the bigger picture. Stalman comes across at times as a complete dick in this video. His contributions have been great, but between his demeanor and his appearance, he completely sucks as an advocate.
