Downloadable Game News For All Three Consoles

Zonk posted more than 7 years ago | from the going-virtual dept.

With Microsoft's Xbox Live service more popular than ever and the other two next-gen consoles almost here, news about the companies' download services is plentiful. For Nintendo, there's word of more Virtual console titles slated for early next year. NES titles include Kid Icarus, Punch-Out, and Kirby's Adventure. Sony has announced that one login will work for every game on their online service, though what you'll find behind the login will differ with every title. Finally, Xbox Live will see even more classic games in the near future. Contra hit the service yesterday, with titles from Atari slated for later this year. A version of the player vs player combat game Worms is also planned for the service. Interesting times for all three online offerings.
Update: 11/09 19:20 GMT by Z : Errr ... you might want to stay away from Contra.

Punch-Out! (1)

Thansal (999464) | more than 7 years ago | (#16787811)

Now I can only wonder if it will be the orginal "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out" or if it some how remade....

I do like seeing classic games showing up as easily avaliable downloads via these services (both XBLA and the Wii's VC).

Skip to the meat of the Nintendo story... (1)

Duck Hunt, Punch-Out (but will it have Mike Tyson?), PilotWings, Hogan's Alley, Kid Icarus, Kirby's Adventure, Pro Wrestling and Wild Gunman are all apparently slated for release, and an early 2007 appearance seems likely given what Nintendo's said about Virtual Console so far.

Queue questions about a gun attachment for Duck Hunt. This is good news indeed, although Clay Shot was much harder (and thus, the place where I spent more time) than shooting ducks. Except for those brown ones. Stupid brown ducks.

Clay shot was easy (1)

juletre (739996) | more than 7 years ago | (#16794714)

Clay Shot was easy. The ducks with their unpredictable flight pattern was tough.

And I was extremely dissapointed when my score just wrapped around from 99900 to 0. I didn't even make the high score that time.

A control pad connected to the first socket can control the ducks. Little-known fact mentioned in the game's instruction manual.

If by "little-known" you mean "ubiquitous knowledge among all players K through 6 at the time of the game's release" then I'd say your right....

The little-known fact to share would be that in the bar version (and not the standard arcade upright or the home edition) shooting the dog was an instant Game Over.

old games, (0)

I kinda liked playing Zelda:OoT on the gamecube as the button layout was better, i think older games via download seems alot cheaper then buying a emu and then the games for each system, tho playing SMB3 on the wii seems a little odd

Re:Punch-Out! (2, Interesting)

Tarlus (1000874) | more than 7 years ago | (#16787877)

Some time ago, Nintendo rereleased the game as "Punch Out!!", without the Mike Tyson endorsement. The only difference, aside from the name, was the replacement of Mike Tyson with a generic game character, who was basically the same boss but just with a different face and skin color.

You can count on this Tyson-less version to be what we'll see on the Wii.

what to add next (1)

Wizzerd911 (1003980) | more than 7 years ago | (#16787921)

I would absolutely die if they added a Phantasy Star title like 3 or 4 from sega genesis. That was the first RPG I ever played and it's still the best :P If you don't think so then...*throws a Sega Genesis console at you* They could use one massive title to get people really excited though like Sonic 3 or something. You know like Gametap with Splinter Cell.

There is a compilation for the PS2 coming out...I think it was this week - Sega Genesis Collection - anyway, it has about 20 games, including PS 3 & 4 for about $20!

No, they're going to add a new special move for Tyson. If he starts loosing, he'll leap at you and bite your ear off!

They showed a "light gun" shell for the Wiimote at E3 so it's a strong possiblity. Now if only you could shoot that stupid dog...

Contra on XBL (2, Interesting)

ereshiere (945922) | more than 7 years ago | (#16788029)

This is the arcade version and not the NES one, right? So the U, U, D, D code won't work, correct? How many people downloading that game will know this?

How 1up gets their info (3, Interesting)

Thansal (999464) | more than 7 years ago | (#16788035)

I actualy bothered to RTFA and found out that 1up is getting their "sources" by searching the ESRB website [esrb.org] for new raitings (simply limit it to the Wii).

Kinda interesting actualy....

Nintendo's online product (1)

hoy74 (1005419) | more than 7 years ago | (#16788045)

If they have the emulator working, wouldn't they be able just pull the backup archives (tapes) and just plug and play with little testing?

I am guessing in term's of the Punch-Out (with or without Mike-Tyson) will be whatever was the last released title (in this case no Mike). This is interesting on several of the old NES ROMs I know there were multiple variations of the same game. One of which was the original Tecmo Bowl (my cousin and I had different rosters, Dickerson or Bently for the RB for the Colts). I know at different points having different emulators, I have seen both variations of the two afore mentioned games.

Also, will multiplayer games be able to played on multiple Wii at the same time? (ie can I play my friend accross the country?)

Re:Punch-Out! (1)

Crasty (1019258) | more than 7 years ago | (#16788089)

It will more than likely be just "punch-out". Nintendo remade the title after it's contract with Tyson expired and replaced him in the game. That will be the version we'll see.

From Wikipedia:
In 1990, towards the end of the NES's run, the game was re-released as Punch-Out!!, with the Tyson character replaced by Mr. Dream. Mr. Dream fought in the same fashion as Tyson, but had cosmetic changes to his face and skin color. It is widely believed that Tyson was removed because of his troubles with the law; however, he was removed due to the fact that his contract with Nintendo had expired and was not renewed.

No Mike Tyson. Nintendo dropped him from the game when he was charged with rape. Other than the graphics, the game's the same, though.

Re:No Mike (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#16803626)

Only half right. "Punch Out" was the original title as developed. The branding was thrown on at the last minute when Nintendo negotiated an agreement with Tyson to use him in the game. The contract was short term and Nintendo elected not to renew it partially due to the rape accusation.

An interesting fact: a "Mike Tyson's Punchout" ROM can be made into a "Punch Out" ROM by editting just a handfull of bytes -- changing a call to the routine that overlay's "Mike Tyson's" on the title screen to a NOP, and modifying a table of pointers to art and string resources for the final fight. A (released) "Punch Out" ROM cannot be converted back though -- the Tyson art and strings are nulled out.

game regurgitation (1)

Re: gun attachment (2, Interesting)

TheForgotton (995762) | more than 7 years ago | (#16788283)

The light-gun [virtualworldlets.net] appears to be a sleeve that docks into the back of the wiimote and turns it into a gunstock so that the tip of the remote becomes the barrel.

I really hope they're going to release Lethal Enforcers for this!

Settlers Of Catan (1)

gotroot801 (7857) | more than 7 years ago | (#16788317)

Remember a few months ago when they announced that Settlers was coming to XBLA? What ever happened to that?

Were they too afraid of people filing complaints over people yelling "I've got wood for sheep!"?

Konami Code (3, Informative)

The Konami Code does work for Contra. Even in the trial version.

You'll notice people have already linked to the light gun attachment for the Wiimote which will cover all the bases for the light gun. However, if you look at people playing Red Steel, you can see that the attachment is purely cosmetic and that you can use the Wiimote as it is. You don't really need the gun stock attachment to play.

Freakin' Mario RPG! (2, Insightful)

RyoShin (610051) | more than 7 years ago | (#16789321)

Ever since they started re-releasing SNES games on the GBA, the number one game I've wanted to get was Super Mario RPG. Many oldschoolers, myself included, will say that this is one of the greatest RPGs ever. It's basically a preview to what Kingdom Hearts is- the combination of two companies, one with the gameplay, the other with the characters. Square took the characters from the Mushroom Kingdom and put them into one awesome game.

The fact that it's appearing on the Wii VC means that Squeenix isn't against the idea of supporting the Wii, at least in this limited way that gets mostly profit. With their lead, other companies will start to jump on board, and hopefully we'll have most, if not all, of the NES, SNES, and N64 library open for purchase and download.

In the same vein, it's nice to see that these new lists aren't just re-re-re-releases. I've never played Super Metroid or Kirby's Super Star, but I will certainly pay to play them on the Wii.

In short: Motherfuckin' Geno.
