Video of Fedora On PS3

klippoth writes, "I just thought I would let you guys know, not only do I have Fedora Core 5 for PPC installed on my Playstation 3, but I video-captured running through the boot loader to demonstrate how it works. And yes, I am selling the PS3 on Ebay, although that was not my original intention. But hearing about people making ten grand... well, let's just say my love for my PS3 is NOT unconditional. Metal Gear Solid 4 doesn't come out for another year anyway! (Although it seems that sales of PS3s are starting to slow down... oh well, I can think of worse things to be stuck with!!)"

Console launches are becoming (0)

pretty lame. All I wanted to do was buy a ps3 and play it, but I can't, because everyone else bought one first, and sold it on ebay.

waah. Read a book. By the time you're done there'll be more PS3's on the shelves and you can get one at retail prices.

Console launches are becoming more and more like IPOs than anything else. Except that you can't do as much with stock certificates. But then again, stock certificates don't spontaneously overheat and combust.

Is this an article about how functional Linux on PS3 is? Or is it intended to spark discussion about PS3 sales on eBay?

Re:Confusing write-up (3, Interesting)

timeOday (582209) | more than 7 years ago | (#16910492)

Here's my vote for discussing the PS3...

So far I've heard dozens of discussion about selling PS3's on ebay, and none about actually playing games on them. That can't be a good thing, not even for the "long-term" (= 2-4 weeks :) sales prospects for PS3's on ebay.

Re:nice resolution (1)

AKAImBatman (238306) | more than 7 years ago | (#16910624)

And what's with the qvga desktop resolution, bad videocard drivers?

You could send him an eBay question to find out for sure, but I'm guessing it's because he needed a lower resolution to make the desktop visible on the video. If I'm not mistaken, Youtube videos are qvga (or at least close) making a qvga desktop a better choice. Had he shown a 1080i desktop, all you would have seen was a few splotches on a huge field of blue.

Re:nice resolution (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#16910662)

It's got to be pretty hard to find drivers for a propriatary Sony architecture -- give the man some slack.

I did think that the menus redrawed pretty slowly though...this is weird for such a 'fast' architecture. I suppose that great graphics do not always translate into good general-purpose computer prowess...unless the HAL is sapping some power.

Re:nice resolution (1)

imboboage0 (876812) | more than 7 years ago | (#16910720)

IIRC, Sony hasn't released/created (whatever the case may be) video drivers for Linux yet. I believe you have to use the framebuffer (or something like that, it's late), but I think I remember hearing that you can still output up to 1080i.

Re:nice resolution (4, Interesting)

CronoCloud (590650) | more than 7 years ago | (#16910922)

The boot/install other OS feature is in the Cross Media bar interface, so yes, it's relatively easy. I've read that you can actually set it so that Linux becomes the default boot environment, which will be a heck of a lot more convenient (when I finally get a PS3) than on the PS2 which requires the "magic" RTE DVD to boot into Linux from being turned off.

Does it play video? (5, Interesting)

kerecsen (807268) | more than 7 years ago | (#16910524)

My first and foremost question is whether the framebuffer driver that comes with Yellow Dog/RH5 fast enough to do video playback. If yes, PS3/Linux would make an awesome media center.

Using Linux instead of the native media player would be pretty much mandatory, since the built-in one won't uprez DVDs to 1080 -- if rumors are to be believed. Otherwise, since the Sony abstraction layer doesn't allow direct access to the GPU, Linux on the PS3 is just a big useless gimmick. The box is way too expensive for text-only purposes (except perhaps for researchers who just gotta have a cell CPU).

Re:Does it play video? (1)

CronoCloud (590650) | more than 7 years ago | (#16911090)

I wouldn't say it's useless without accelrated graphics, a PS2 Linux kit has only "limited" hardware acceleration and it can do all sorts of stuff. The basic everyday desktop stuff that people do should work fine. Firefox, thunderbird, gaim, GIMP, OpenOffice that sort of thing.

The Single Greatest Console Ever (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#16910550)

I've owned consoles going all the way back to when my parents brought home a 2600 and I can say none of them compare to just how good the PS3 is. Free 40 player online Resistance games with no lag thanks to Sony's dedicated server setup, the Motorstorm demo I downloaded yesterday(massively better than the one running in stores right now), webbrowsing right from my TV with a keyboard and mouse, and the machine is virtually silent no matter what it is doing. I replaced the 20gig drive the PS3 came with a nice big drive I bought last week. The original drive pops right out and it was trivial to put the new one in.

I just my FC5 installation going on my PS3 last night and am starting to get all the cool stuff like emulators and media software installed. I am already thinking about getting a second PS3 now that the Linux stuff is getting so much attention so I have one for gaming and one running always as a dedicated server. I looks like the PS3 running Linux is going to be the ultimate media server soon as people get everything up and running on the system. Cell optimized video compression is the thing I look most forward to.

Sony has talked about coming out with build to order PS3 versions later. A multi-Cell workstation with a few gigs of RAM running Linux will be a dream machine. Make it happen Sony! The amazing number of people out there running Linux on their PS3s makes it clear that there is tremendous demand for such a product.

The market has settled down around $1,200 since yesterday, although you can still find some obviously scammed auction up in the $2,000+ range. Hell, one analyst is predicting a drop to sub-$1,000 tomorrow. The resale demand just isn't there to support the 90% of people who bought PS3s just to flood ebay with them.

Re:$10,000? (2, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#16910612)

"The resale demand just isn't there to support the 90% of people who bought PS3s just to flood ebay with them."

Bzzttt!

You fail at damage control clown. There were 400k PS3s in the initial PS3 shipment, the total number on eBay is a tiny fraction of that amount.

Prices are falling because air shipments of new PS3s are already arriving in the US. Target just got another batch in the past day or so. And other retailers are going to be receiving some 600k new units over the next five weeks.

Give the "lol ebay" crap as rest, it just make people look desperate to downplay the massive demand for the console.

mkraft (200694) | more than 7 years ago | (#16910614)

I've noticed that shortly after the release the prices for PS3s on eBay dropped sharply so much that you can pick one up for less than $1000 if your observant. Basically with over a hundred thousand PS3s on eBay the prices were bound to drop.

Oh and taking it out of the box and using it will definitely cause the price you can sell it for to go down even more.

Re:You won't get close to $10,000 (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#16910664)

A hundred thousand PS3s on eBay??

Don't be an idiot. Prices are dropping because Sony just announced massive numbers of air shipments are on their way to the US and will be arriving in stores as early as tomorrow.

Prices will start to rise back up to launch day amounts as we get close to Christmas as the million or so PS3s Sony will have shipped isn't remotely close to the demand for the system.

Re:You won't get close to $10,000 (1)

mkraft (200694) | more than 7 years ago | (#16910814)

Yes they said they are flying them in, instead of shipping them in. All that does is get the consoles here faster after they've been built. It doesn't make them build the consoles any faster or make more of them. I still say the reason the prices dropped is that there are thousands and thousands of them on eBay. There were literally 20 PS3 auctions expiring every minute the other day. Now it's down to about 2 to 5 PS3 auctions expiring per minute and a good number of them have no bids because their starting price is over $1500. I'm talking the 60 GB model, not the 20 GB one.

I do agree that they will rise up the closer it gets to Christmas, but I don't think they'll get back to the $3000+ per console that they were at launch since the "gotta have it first no matter the cost" people have already bid and got theirs leaving the more sensible (yet still stupid) people who aren't bidding as much.

Re:You won't get close to $10,000 (1)

Kohath (38547) | more than 7 years ago | (#16911042)

A hundred thousand on eBay is probably only a little high.

Almost all of those people in line were going to eBay their PS3. There have been surveys.

no, it doesn't. The PS3 requires a rather complex series of steps to setup an operating system, and the Windows setup is incompatable with this method. Believe me, I already tried to install Vista on mine. Not that it could never be done, but it's way out of my range, and therefore the range of %99 of PS3 owners.

I hope you realize that Post-NT versions of Windows are compiled only for x86. The Cell processor is based on the Power/PowerPC architecture. You'd have about as much luck running Windows on a G5 Mac as you would on the PS3. :-/

Download the otheros.self file from SCEfoo,

http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/ [playstation.com]

download FC5 PPC DVD,

download the addon's disk (theres some detailed instructions on it too)

ftp://ftp.uk.linux.org/pub/linux/Sony-PS3/ [linux.org]

and install.

You can find more detailed instructions in various places on the net

In a about a week you'll be able to buy Yellow Dog 5.0 for the PS3, supposedly it has 1 click install.

I really don't know why you're so skeptical, this is not the first game console from Sony that supports LInux, officially mind you, this isn't some sort of hack.

I'm sorry, I missed the other /. post. But if that's the case, how is this anything more than blatant advertising? I could've predicted what the boot sequence for Fedora looks like, having never touched a PS3. If I got Fedora running on a Sega Genisis, I'm pretty sure it'd look almost exactly like it does on the PS3, on a regular PC, or on anything else. Fedora's default GNOME setup isn't exactly new or interesting either. "OMFG!!!1 The 'System Preferences'" Amazing!

So that means the only previously unknown information in the summary or the video is that some dumbass is selling his PS3. Lame.

If I had only known... (4, Informative)

If I had known the message I sent in was going to be printed verbatim, I think I would have been smart enough to include a link to my Ebay auction...as it is, I could throw a plug down here but it would get buried in no time. As a note though, I actually went through a lot to get that captured, voiced, cleaned up, composited, etc, so I think if I do get any decent price out of this, I earned it more than the guy who threw in a free candy bar. As a side note, I did learn an awful lot about compositing... So as far as Linux goes, I haven't had any luck with the Network yet, but then again, the Optical drive won't mount and I seem to lack any audio as well. That being said, I am currently re-loading the unit, and this time I am vid-capturing that as well, since a lot of people have asked how this was done. Hopefully I'll have that vid up tomorrow. Personally, this makes for a great exercise in Linux troubleshooting, but I really can't wait for Yellow Dog Linux to come out, seeing as how it is optimized for the PS3. I expect excellent results. Where video quality is concerned, I am capturing it on my old (like way old) MythTV box, so to start with, it's not the best, having an ATI AIW 9000 in it. And since that card doesn't support HD, it's running through a good old-fashioned composite cable. On top of that, Youtube asks that vids be resized to 320x240, so you can do the math. You're lucky it's legible at all. That was really late at night when I did that, so trust me, "Compiling the Kernel" is not that bad....as close as I was to passing out, I'm amazed I didn't refer to its "Registry" or "Guru Meditation Error"....

Oh yes it is.

Yeah Mr. 1029528, you've seen a Guru Meditation Error.

No way.

I think your daddy told you a scary bed time story about one.

It's worth remembering that the majority of people who will allow you to rip them off a thousand dollars only do so because they know how easy it is to rip off a thousand dollars from somebody else. Don't think you aren't participating in the perpetuate of that line of thought

xshader (201678) | more than 7 years ago | (#16910704)

this guy doesnt really know whats going on... the kernel is loading and he calls it "compiling the kernel" and by running startx he claims it is starting the "fedora gui" (which in a sense is true...).

Re:noob (1)

CronoCloud (590650) | more than 7 years ago | (#16910886)

There's a few non Linux users with PS3's who have been walkthroughed the Fedora install on various message boards, just so the Linux guys without PS3's can ask them questions.

Re:noob (1)

klippoth (1029528) | more than 7 years ago | (#16910900)

I don't pretend to be "1337" (since you want to use "noob"), I just know how to follow directions. I'm still learning about Linux and thought this would be a fun project, so it'd be kinda cool if you could not be all negative about it. I know it wasn't "compiling the kernel", that was a bad habit of an unexperienced tongue that was too tired too realize what I said, and too lazy to fix it once I realized. As far as the "GUI" is concerned, well, GUI = Graphical User Interface. Any software can have a Graphical User Interface. A Graphical User Interface is an interface that isn't text based. Tell me where I'm going wrong here...

Re:noob (1)

cymen (8178) | more than 7 years ago | (#16910992)

When spoken the abbreviation GUI is said "gooey" not G U I. Don't worry. I once had someone laughing away with the way I said Abit (the motherboard maker).

Where is the Zonk FUD? (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#16910856)

I think people are a little cranky that there wasn't the usual bit of Zonk spin/FUD tacked on to this story.

kdawson should have learned that each Sony PS3 story needs to have an obligatory bit of anti-Sony propaganda at the end of the summary:

"Video of Fedora On PS3 - Sony Doomed?"
"Video of Fedora On PS3 - Don't fall for the hype"
"Video of Fedora On PS3 - Sony giving up on gaming" ...

uh...cuz I don't own a Wii? And I'm too busy doing video captures of the PS3 to go see how the launch is going. I mean, I can only really deal with one shiny object at a time, if I had a Wii as well, I think my head would explode...

PS3's were designed with additional OS' in mind (3, Insightful)

flimflammer (956759) | more than 7 years ago | (#16910988)

I've been testing PS3 at SCEA for quite a few months now, and I'm not sure about the retail units (we have a special testing units), but there is a means right from the PS3 menu to setup multiple operating systems, with a partitioning tool included in it.

So I have to say I'm as impressed with this story as I was when I received a link from someone detailing the success of someone who thought he was newsworthy by replacing the stock hard drive, as if it wasn't designed to be replaceable.

PS3 + Network + This guy... (0)

is a recipe for disaster. As other posters noted, he doesn't have a clue as to what's going on, but what scares me the most is that he runs startx as root.

this video shows nothing (1, Informative)

Jacek Poplawski (223457) | more than 7 years ago | (#16911022)

This video doesn't show anything interesting.

After boot there was a console, I wanted to see /proc, but someone just logged on root and... called startx.

Then author just move mouse cursor over menu and read menu items, like he never seen it bfore.

Everything looks quite lame.

How about the Wii? (1, Offtopic)

the_arrow (171557) | more than 7 years ago | (#16911060)

Wasn't the Wii released in the US yesterday? I haven't seen anything about it here on /., or anywhere else for that matter (but I haven't been looking very hard). Or is everyone just busy playing Zelda? :)

steps? (1)

maskedavenger (674027) | more than 7 years ago | (#16911116)

I see no steps. this is 3 minutes of a tour of fedora. I know how to use it! Show me how to load it on a ps3.

and furthermore batman, what driver compatibility is there? oh, none? well then, pretty useless for the time being? or what?

see all these questions are being asked because none are answered in the googletube! c'mon man! don't let us hang like this!
