David X. Cohen Interviewed on New Futurama

Zonk posted more than 7 years ago | from the everybody-loves-hypnotoad dept.

It's funny. Laugh. 240

eldavojohn writes "Toyfare has a short but exclusive interview with co-creator of Futurama David X. Cohen. There's a lot of information about how they plan to continue the series. He also reveals they're halfway through writing the new season and just starting animation. When asked about his favorite minor character of the show, Cohen responded 'Hypnotoad. By the way, we are looking into producing a full 22-minute episode of Everybody Loves Hypnotoad for the DVD release. I am serious.'"

I have this vague memory of reading Asimov's Oceans of Venus, where, as the story goes (iirc) amphibians - toads maybe? - were kept as pets, but as the story unwound, it was found that the blighters were exerting mind control over the human inhabitants.

This Hypnotoad thingy wouldn't happen to have been nicked from Asimov now, would it?

Hmm, I could argue that 'jagoff' is a reference to South Park, another cartoon show. Very interesting. You think Futurama is total crap, yet you think a show with giant jewish aliens performing freaky alien sex on each other is worth referencing. When I watch Futurama, it's usually on late at night and sometimes I pass out near the end. Every time I've watched the episode with Fry's dog, I've passed out right at the ending and woken up to a everyone else in the room crying. Happened three times now.

I don't think I ever want to see the ending.

About the "X"... (4, Interesting)

Bones3D_mac (324952) | more than 7 years ago | (#17244218)

For those of you who never watchd the full set of commentaries on the Futurama DVDs, there's an interesting story behind the "X" in David X. Cohen's name.

Back in the late 90's, he attempted to register his real name, "David S. Cohen", with the writer's guild. However, they already had a David S. Cohen registered with them. Due to the rules of the writer's guild, all names registered with them must be unique to avoid confusion. So, David decided to change his name over to David X. Cohen for identification purposes.

So what's the meaning of the "X" in the name? Not a damned thing! It was chosen entirely because it was weird enough to be easily recognizable.

Re:About the "X"... (4, Informative)

Nasarius (593729) | more than 7 years ago | (#17244788)

The Futurama DVD commentaries are seriously funnier than the shows sometimes, which is saying something. David X. Cohen and Ken Keeler are huge nerds, and John DiMaggio and Billy West are just plain hilarious.

They're a buncha muncha cruncha human!

Futurama is my favourite show of all time. There are a few that come close, but even after watching every episode about 10 times, I will still watch a Futurama re-run over a new episode of something else I like if they are on at the same time. I can't get enough. Maybe it's a medical condition [slashdot.org] .

Just out of interest, what is everyone's favourite character (main or side character, it doesn't matter). I think mine would have to be Dr Zoidberg. Every time he scuttles off screaming "Wooooop wooopwooopwoop" I burst out laughing. A close second would be Morbo.

Re:Favorite episodes (1)

ABasketOfPups (1004562) | more than 7 years ago | (#17245780)

I don't much care for That's Lobstertainment! at all, but I do love Zoidberg. During one of the Santa Claus episodes, "...and it's his good friend, Jesus!" nearly made me spit out my pancreas. Now that's good humor!

His delivery of "Gracias" in the Single Female Lawyer episode is priceless, as is John DiMaggio's laugh at the line in the commentary. Honestly, he and Billy West should just have a weekly show where try drink a lot, talk about the news, and get blind stinking drunk. I'd pay to see, and hear, that.

Bender: You may have to metaphorically make a deal with the devil. And by "devil," I mean "Robot Devil," and by "metaphorically," I mean "get your coat."

I vote they get their butts into gear, bring out the whips and shackles, get them to work asap!

We all know that doesn't work. You still suffer from inefficiency. Hermes could get the whole production crew down to a single Australian guy and still finish on a quicker schedule.

This is just great news. Simpsons and Family guy are good and all, but the world hasn't been the same without the old Planet Express crew.

Bender: You know, I was God once.
God: Yes, I saw. You were doing well until everyone died.

Great Zombie Jesus, how can you submit a news story about new Futurama and not use Prof. Farnsworth's catch phrase?

It would be inappropriate since news about new Futurama episodes is actually good. Now, if the story was about said episodes being cancelled, THEN "Good news everyone!" works just fine. :)

And to think, David, you gave up a PhD in Computer Science from UC Berkeley for the obscurity of a career writing silly cartoons. Have you no ambition? :)

Favorite Hermes quips:

5. "That's not a cigar. Uh... and it's not mine." 4. "I'm calling the police! ...Right after I flush some tings." 3. "I'm gonna go home and relax, the traditional, Jamaican way - a glass of warm milk and a good night's sleep." 2. "What's that you're hacking off? Is it my torso? It is! My precious torso!" 1. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. MY MANWICH!!!"
