E3 Renamed Entertainment for All Expo

Zonk posted more than 7 years ago | from the catchy dept.

E3 44

Next Generation is reporting that what-was-once E3, and what could have been the 'GamePro Expo', has now been renamed to the Entertainment for All expo. 'E For All', for short, will feature an open door policy: all you have to do to get in is pay the $100 admittance fee. From the article: "E for All will be held at the L.A.C.C. October 18-20, 2007, just as the holiday gift-buying season ramps up. Attendees will be able to buy exhibitors' products from the show floor. Dolaher wasn't yet ready to announce exactly which companies are participating as contracts are being worked out. Other highlights at the event will include hands-on opportunities to try out the latest games and gadgets, videogame tourneys, a job fair and 'family-friendly offerings.'"

We can call "yee-haw" for short and wear overpriced hats with the price tags hanging off of them.

Seriously, what do have against Sarah Cannon?
E3, for all practical purposes, has appeared to be going downhill over the past several years. If this helps bring people in, maybe some big names will consider returning to this event.

E for All = "yee-haw"

It's a joke. Laugh. It's funny.

Or, you might not be a redneck if you can't laugh at a redneck joke. :P

Sorry, it has been a long day here at work, and my sense of humor is about as functional as Windows ME. I kind of have a soft spot for her, so I took more offense than what was really there.

Just been one of those days here...

at $100 a head (1)

Thansal (999464) | more than 7 years ago | (#17478192)

At $100 a head they had better bring back booth babes or I predict riots! (or atleast very low attendance, well, honestly at $100 a head I expect low attendance no matter what)

Re:at $100 a head (2, Funny)

the1rob (1047478) | more than 7 years ago | (#17478834)

Wait...who's giving the $100 head if the booth babes aren't there?

That's a rip off. This girl at a pub downtown is only $10/head.

the nail in the coffin... (3, Insightful)

Other highlights at the event will include hands-on opportunities to try out the latest games and gadgets, videogame tourneys, a job fair and 'family-friendly offerings.'

So, basically what they're saying is, don't expect to see any booth babes. Ever again.

E3 IS OVER! ;_;

So....no hotels. (1)

Warbringer87 (969664) | more than 7 years ago | (#17478230)

From what I call recall, the whole scope was changing and they would be moving to private meetings in hotels. I guess either that is gone or it is splitting off. I'm actually looking forward to the job fair portion, could prove to be very interesting.

Re:So....no hotels. (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#17478568)

This has nothing to do with E3 other than the fact it will be held in the venue E3 was once held in.

So:
E3 Media and Business Summit - July (E3's next of kin)
E for All - October (Some other company trying to cash in)

"October" means it is not related to old E3 ... (1)

AHumbleOpinion (546848) | more than 7 years ago | (#17496916)

"October" means it is not related to the old E3, that is too late for buyers, press, etc. This will probably be more like your local computer swapmeet/fair, but more focused, and without any good deals on prices. Developers/Publishers are not going to sell anything below suggested retail. Whoever is putting money up for this expo should have just gone to Las Vegas, played roulette, and bet on green.

Booth Babes (0, Redundant)

Valthan (977851) | more than 7 years ago | (#17478238)

Why does "family-friendly" sound to me like "no half-naked booth babes". That was one of the main reasons to go to E3

Re:Booth Babes (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#17478384)

If you don't want family friendly, there's always the AEE [adultenter...ntexpo.com] in Las Vegas. Seriously, they should drop Los Angeles and move all the games over to Las Vegas. It'll be the same except for some of the toys and edible creams that are more interesting.

Yay! I can get into E3 now (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#17478294)

... but E3 is going to suck because it isn't closed anymore, thus I don't want to go?

And this is smaller how? (1)

tarun713 (782737) | more than 7 years ago | (#17478296)

Wasn't the E3 show redesign supposed to shrink its size and not allow public admittance? Now it seems it is just being used to sell items and nothing has changed.

E for all (3, Interesting)

Dr. Eggman (932300) | more than 7 years ago | (#17478338)

and all for me?

Personally, I hope this doesn't get off the ground. I'd rather see an expanded GDC, with more serious discussion and seminars instead of a public amusement fair. Partly, I'd rather the GDC expand because it gives developers more breathing room with their projects. When their main audience is other game developers, the tech demonstrations they have don't have to be so extravagent that they need to fudge the results to convice people "this is what we're aiming for." You can see those quarky, buggy, but above all, real works developers are making or even just skip the demos; a convincing speech helps pull an audience into a developer's dream more than any video ever could.

I'd also rather see E for all left behind because of it sounds too much like E3. The industry is maturing and I'd rather see E3, MTV, and the likes be left behind and develop a more professional attitude.

Re:E for all (1)

PhoenixOne (674466) | more than 7 years ago | (#17484310)

The future of GDC is why I *want* this to get off the ground. And I want it for the same reasons you pointed out.

E3 was about feeding "hype" to the media while GDC was about sharing the reality of the industry with its workers. The reality of the game industry is different then the "reality" the marking people would like the general public to believe.

If GDC has to expand to make up for E3, you'll see far less real content and way more "hype". Large companies don't like showing unpolished products, they'd rather show CGI. Developers are not as "sexy" as booth babes (who are far less likely to tell dirty secrets about the company, or share code). The big names in the industry have already censoring the content of some of the seminars (compare the content of the first Halo seminars to the Halo2 seminars). If something doesn't happen real soon, GDC as you know it will stop and E3v2 will take its place

I think I've heard of this before. (1)

Robot Randy (982296) | more than 7 years ago | (#17478370)

Anyone can enter as long as they pay, and you can buy merchandise inside.

It's the LA Computer Fair! (or maybe just a swap meet...)

(For those who do are not in the LA area, the LA Computer Fair is a paid entry computer swapmeet. You can find info at http://www.lacomputerfair.com/ [lacomputerfair.com] )

Re:I think I've heard of this before. (1)

Aladrin (926209) | more than 7 years ago | (#17479772)

They have these in central Florida, as well, but not under a standardized name. It used to be GREAT for getting neat stuff cheap, but now it's just another depot to buy parts at. Might as well shop online.

As for the E3 -> EfAE... Didn't they close the E3 because there were too many people? And wasn't E3 about showing stuff that didn't exist yet, but would within the next year or so?

So they completely ignored the problem and instead turned it from a highly successful expo to a swapmeet that noboby really cares about.

Brilliant!

1) Create wildly successful expo.
2) Run with it for a few years.
3) Cancel expo.
4) Create swapmeet under a new name.
5) ???
6) Profit!

Wait... Wasn't the profit up around #2?

This is the same sort of thing that happened before the Chicago CES (Summer CES) died. Open to the public, and then hotel rooms only. I'll stick with the Midwest Gaming Classic [midwestgamingclassic.com] .

Shades of Comdex (1)

Sylver Dragon (445237) | more than 7 years ago | (#17482898)

This strikes me as the same path that eventually led Comdex (formerly a large, important computer show, now a memory) into the dirt. Originally, it was intended for developers, but more and more end users wanted in, and got in. By the end it was nothing but a worthless marketing show aimed at the end users. E3 seems to have followed this same trajectory. This E4A is just the last gasp of breath escaping its lungs.

Some research... (4, Informative)

Warbringer87 (969664) | more than 7 years ago | (#17482982)

E3 hasn't been "renamed", it will still take place in hotels, etc, being a "closed" affair. (Read here for more [e3insider.com] )

Another organization has now created something that will be called "E for All" It is run by IDG, not by the ESA, but it does have the ESA's endorsement. (That is here. [idgworldexpo.com] )

Just to make things clearer for people.
