Child's Play Tops $1 Million

Zonk posted more than 7 years ago | from the gamer-pride dept.

Games 33

ack154 writes "According to today's update to their website, the Child's Play charity has passed the $1 million mark. The final tally is listed at $1,024,400 — more than $400k over last year's total! The final update from their site reads: 'You guys did it. You broke a million dollars in just over two months. Child's Play started as a way to show how good our community can be, but it's turned into something greater than we could have ever imagined. We're making an impact on lives. See you next year.'"

See you next year? Does that mean they are taking 2008 off? I think we should give this year too!

More than likely, I'd say it means they'd be taking 2007 off, not 2008...

And what could be more fitting than a final total that includes the number '1024'? Truely, this is the greatest achivement of gamers and geeks everywhere! Hats off all around to Childplay and Penny Arcade!

but some 'unfunny' people are going to give more cash to charity and spoil the gag for the rest of us :(

One MEGA-thousand dollars!

Re:Heh (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#17482124)

If it had indeed been exactly one Mebi-dollar ($ 1048576) that would've been too weird to be a coincidence. As it is , pretty close to one Kibi-Kilo dollars (1024*1000)

How about a final total that includes the number '1337'?

That was the exact pre-reg number for the first PAX.

We need to hear about the conscience-easing efforts of a few dedicated sociopaths who are leading our nation's youth on the path to video destruction?

Congrats (1)

Congratulations to the Penny Arcade guys, and everyone who donated. This kind of thing just shows the generosity that people show when they're given a chance.

You are assuming he wants to help kids. All I've seen him do is help himself to publicity.

Who names a charity after a violent horror movie that stars a psychopathic doll [imdb.com] ?

But congratulations anyway.

LineNoiz (616971) | more than 7 years ago | (#17480202)

"Child's play" is an idiom meaning that something is simple to achieve.

The movie (along with a plethora of TV shows, plays, books, etc.) was named after the idiom.

How about a special program for sick girls? (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#17480554)

I hope that they are not being overlooked. As you all know, girls need a little coaxing to get playing. I'm still bummed after having two nieces and no nephews!

Re:How about a special program for sick girls? (1)

Chris Burke (6130) | more than 7 years ago | (#17483580)

Considering the women I know who have picked up DSes, I'm guessing a DS and Nintendogs or Animal Crossing is sufficient coaxing.

Did you look at the wish list? (1)

Chibi Merrow (226057) | more than 7 years ago | (#17486142)

Seriously. There was plenty in there for the fairer sex. Why do they need their own separate program?

No DS Lite for my kid bro... (1)

Buddy_DoQ (922706) | more than 7 years ago | (#17480590)

...it went to a kid stuck in a hospital bed somewhere in Dallas instead.

Sure it was $130 I didn't really have, but now there's an undoubtedly more suitable recipient enjoying Mario Cart between operations, and I feel all the better for it.

Glad I could help in my small way to reach that million dollar mark, my first year giving to Child's Play too. High-Five!

Now all that's left is to organize a field-trip to engage DS WiFi wars at the local children's hospital. Maybe even invite old Jack for a round or two.

Re:No DS Lite for my kid bro... (1)

Dasaan (644170) | more than 7 years ago | (#17482502)

hmm, wifi ... in a hospital ward? Somehow I don't think that'd go down too well.

Still nice idea in principle.

Re:No DS Lite for my kid bro... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#17483374)

DS Lite's can do ad-hoc networking. They wouldn't have to install a wireless AP or whatever you're thinking of.

Re:No DS Lite for my kid bro... (1)

CastrTroy (595695) | more than 7 years ago | (#17484486)

What are you talking about. Those doctors on Grey's Anatomy are constantly talking on their cell phones. If doctors can use cell phones, then they can hook up a wireless network for the kids.

Re:No DS Lite for my kid bro... (1)

assassinator42 (844848) | more than 7 years ago | (#17485356)

Actually, a local hospital has a private WiFi network seemingly going throughout the hospital. (Well, my DS detected several APs when I went to visit a recovering relative.) They apparently have computers on carts. I also saw a sign advertising free WiFi in a lobby in another hospital.

Re:No DS Lite for my kid bro... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#17490802)

I'm in the middle of implementing a wireless network at a major metro hospital. Some wards have it, some don't. It depends on the needs of the people in it. In general though, there's no concern about interference. There are cordless phones, wireless phones, microwaves, and all other kinds of EM emitting devices spread throughout the hospital, and wireless ethernet's more in demand than in protest.

More hospitals mean... (2, Insightful)

Warbringer87 (969664) | more than 7 years ago | (#17481890)

more money. People are more likely to donate to a local hospital, its just something they can attach to more, ya know? So if there isn't a single hospital in your state on Child Play's map, head on down to the nearest one and help spread the word. And even if there, if it is not very close by, find the closest hospital and tell THEM. If you tell them now, they will more than likely be ready for 2007's fundraising.

Gaming (4, Insightful)

Da3vid (926771) | more than 7 years ago | (#17481954)

When I was young, my even younger sister was dying of cancer. We didn't have fancy video games at that time, but we had TONS of donated board games, and they made all the difference. They didn't only make times easier on my sister, but they made my last days with her happier and allowed us to spend quality time together even if we were in such a dreary place.
