GDC To Honor Respected Game Figures

Zonk posted more than 7 years ago | from the and-the-winners-are-everybody dept.

Games 8

Next Generation has the word that several respected games industry contributors will be receiving special awards at this years Game Developer's Choice Awards ceremony. Legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto, Tetris's creator Alexey Pajitnov, indie-games guru Greg Costikyan, and 'The Fatman' (audio genius George Sanger) will all be given awards that 'reflect the dramatic impact of their visionary creations and industry work'. Pajitnov will be getting the 'First Penguin' award, for breaking new ground on the puzzle genre, while Costikyan will be given the 'Maverick' award for his work with the Manifesto Games label. Sanger will get the 'Community Contributions' nod for his pioneering work with music and sound, while Miyamoto will get a (much-deserved) Lifetime Achievement award for his numerous contributions to the industry via Nintendo. The GDCAs will be held on March 7th at the Game Developer's Conference.

Interesting. He's a nice guy, I remember working with him briefly on the PARANOIA XP sourcebook, but I had no idea he'd end up standing next to people like Miyamoto and the creator of Tetris. He must be doing very well :)

It sure took some stones to post that!

If Miyamoto gets an award (-1, Troll)

All I know is that Snape kills Dumbledor in Harry Potter. Enjoy the Awards, I know I did!

Manifesto!? (0)

"Costikyan will be given the 'Maverick' award for his work with the Manifesto Games label."

WTF?! I am speechless. This is ridiculous. Miyamoto and Pajitnov's work will seem meaningless if they also give an award to this guy for his crappy "portal". Shouldn't a company like Popcap get the award instead, for basically shaping an entire new games market?!?!

Duke Nukem's producers at 3D Realms. If ever there was a team that showed dedication to a project far, far, far longer than it would have taken anyone else to have simply given up, it's them.

I salute them for refusing to go quietly in to that cold, dark night, regardless of the mounting evidence they actually have no idea how to launch a game whatsoever.

What, no love for Superfly Johnson?

He was robbed.

Why George Sanger? (0)

I've never heard of him. Is the award simply for number of works? If it is, it should go to David Whittaker.

What about the real game music legends, like Rob Hubbard, Nobuo Uematsu or Richard Joseph?
