Halo 3 Confirmed for Fall 2007

Zonk posted more than 7 years ago | from the not-surprising-but-still-shiny dept.

XBox (Games) 42

The folks at Bungie share the news, via their weekly update, that Halo 3 will be coming out this fall. Not surprising, but still good to hear. The game's marketing campaign will soon be kicking into gear, and the site offers the first 'iconic' image they'll be using on billboards and bus stops. The update also includes a few words on the Crackdown/Beta offering (sometimes later this spring), and an update on where they are with Halo itself.

Halo 3 was out in 1990 (1, Funny)

I thought Halo 3 [wikipedia.org] ("Head Like a Hole" single by Nine Inch Nails) was out in 1990.

Next thing we know you're going on about how all these PS2 games don't work on your IBM Personal System/2.

Finally, release dates! (2, Insightful)

I don't do XBox360, but I'm excited that they've pinned down a release date. Now all the release dates I'm waiting on (Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, Smash Brothers Brawl) might finally start hitting as other game companies plan their releases around and/or to coincide with the juggernaut Halo 3 madness. Now if only we got something more definitive than "Fall..."

Sciros (986030) | more than 7 years ago | (#18069624)

Except that so far Nintendo has been total rubbish at keeping release dates unless they announce them as they approach. I'd love a solid release date from those guys as well (I'll probably get a Wii when Brawl hits shelves), but I doubt we'll get it.

Bungie was good about Halo 2 so I expect the same of Halo 3. I just hope they're giving themselves enough time to make it killer. They didn't with Halo 2.

Halo 3...juggernaut...madness???

Wha???

No one outside the tiny Xbox demographic gives a damn about yet another Halo game. No one who owns a PS3 or Wii is going to give a shit that yet another crappy Xbox shooter goes on sale.

If anything it will give PS3 and Wii owners just one more reason to pity Xbox fanboys desperately standing in line for their console's one 'big game'.

OMG!!! Halo - it's so shiny! Fucking retards.

You're a fuck. There is already Gears of War, which smokes any PS3 or Wii game on the market. This will be the second or third (Mass Effect) big game for the 360. Try not to let your jealous hang out.

Those are Nintendo first-party games... (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#18069750)

...does Nintendo actually pay attention to other releases when they make dates? I know they like to hit xmas with stuff but other than that aren't they in their own world? Particularly with Halo, I imagine they think the demographics don't cross much, and maybe they don't, although Smash Bros is a pretty major Halo competitor in my view.

Don't think so. Why else would they release Metroid Prime 2 right next to Halo2 ? That move cost a lot of sales...

Smash Bros is a pretty major Halo competitor in my view.

Smash is great, and I think it should be out Q3 this year (prior to the Christmas period). If they want ANYTHING to go toe to toe with Halo 3 though, it should be Mario Galaxy. Or at the very least it can't be Metroid.

Honestly, as much as I'm looking forward to Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl I expect the game that will really define the Wii in 2007 is a game we do not know about and can probably not guess ...

If you look at the DS, Nintendo is really good at producing unexpected highly successful franchises; Brain Training, Nintendogs, The New Super Mario Bros and Animal Crossing are all games that (seemed to) came out of no where and have become remarkably large hits on the DS because they appealed to gamers and non-gamers alike.

I wouldn't be too surprised if after E3 (or TGS) there is a game which we couldn't imagine which suddenly becomes remarkably popular ...

Agreed. There is a lot of truth in that. I expect Mario to hold his own against Halo (just as Zelda would) and I also expect MGS4 and FFXIII to not make it this year. I think a game out of left field (like Nintendogs was) has tremendous potential to capture the sales this holiday.

Re:Finally, release dates! (1)

AbsoluteXyro (1048620) | more than 7 years ago | (#18071776)

I have a feeling Nintendo will be stupid and put Metroid Prime 3 out against Halo 3. Smash Bros might be able to go up against Halo 3, but not Metroid Prime 3, no way. Prime 2 didn't do nearly as well as Prime 1, and I think that can be greatly attributed to the fact that it went out up against Halo 2. With any luck, Nintendo won't do this... the downside though is that if Metroid Prime 3 doesn't come out then, we probably won't see it until 2008.

Halo 3 Fails To Be Microsoft's Resistance Killer (-1, Offtopic)

Microsoft is charging 360 owners 50 dollars a year just for the privilege of playing games online. That is 200-250 dollars you are adding to the price of the console. Just to play Halo 3 online over the next few years you are having to pay 500-650 dollars to Microsoft for you 360. A complete ripoff considering:

No dedicated servers for 360 games
Pitiful number of players - 16 max for Halo 3 - WTF?
Lag, lag, lag

What's even worse is Halo 3 looks like a fucking Xbox games. It is pathetic that Bungie is still trying to pedal that stupid green metal effect. It's fucking 2007 no one is impressed anymore!

The only thing that will save Halo 3 is there is absolutely nothing else to buy on the 360. Microsoft is going to have to fork over some huge money hats to reviewers like they did with Halo 2 and Gears of War to avoid getting laughed at by the gaming press.

If you were actually an FPS/TPS fan, you'd either game on the 360 or on the best platform, a PC. Don't get pissy with the world because you wasted $600 on a system with no games besides the clearly mediocre Resistance.

This guy is flamebait, and flaming him is well deserved. However don't go bashing on Resistance just for him, I believe it's much better than people give it credit for, it's creative and unique take on weapons especially.

Insomniac created a solid shooter, don't go bashing them just to get this guy (or to get Sony).

Sorry, this "PS3 has no games" bullshit is getting really, really old by now.

The current PS3 library is already better overall than that of Wii, at least for me (couldn't care less about Zelda):

http://www.metacritic.com/games/wii/scores/ [metacritic.com]

Wii, if any console, has no good games. Amazing amount of junk, though.

Apart from a couple of Nintendo big titles in 2007 (maybe), it's looking really bleak in the future. Just (mostly mediocre) PS2/Cube ports with tacked on controls and maybe a new name to hide the fact that you've seen it all before. "New" SSX, "new" Mortal Kombat, "new" Prince of Persia... not even proper sequels what PS3/Xbox360 get.

HappySqurriel (1010623) | more than 7 years ago | (#18069700)

Well ... technically speaking you wouldn't need a "Resistance Killer" because Resistance has neither sold well enough (less than a million units) nor reviewed well enough (88% on gamerankings) to be considered the dominant game ...

Beyond that, the rest of your post is just a very uneducated troll

Re:Halo 3 Fails To Be Microsoft's Resistance Kille (0, Troll)

fistfullast33l (819270) | more than 7 years ago | (#18069838)

While Resistence wasn't the best FPS ever made, the online definitely leaves Halo in the dust. I got bored of Halo in Halo 2...I didn't even finish the game. They had me for the first hour or so but as soon as I ended up on another Halo ring, I thought the plot went bust. The only difference was this twist in prophets and all that, but it was still pretty uninspired. I've played both Halo 2 multiplayer and Resistence, and I like Resistence better - it's lag free, large, fun battles with no cost outside that of the console and the game.

The fact that it didn't sell more than one million units isn't the fault of the game so much as the fault that the PS3 doesn't have as large of an install base as the 360 yet. To compare the two bases is dumb since the 360 has been out a year and had a worse launch than the PS3, fanboy hype aside. Using numbers sold to gauge a quality game would indicate that Barbie's Playworld or whatever was a much better game than Psychonauts, which I think we all know isn't true.

Re:Halo 3 Fails To Be Microsoft's Resistance Kille (1)

HappySqurriel (1010623) | more than 7 years ago | (#18070718)

Not that I disagree with you about sales not being equal to quality ...

Historically, when people have talked about "[Videogame] Killers" the videogame they choose is both highly popular (represented in sales) and critically acclaimed (represented in review scores); games like Halo, Grand Turismo and The Legend of Zelda are typically games where you would use as reference games ... that is "Resistance is a Halo Killer", "Ico is a Zelda Killer" or "Project Gothem Racing is a Grand Turismo Killer".

Re:Halo 3 Fails To Be Microsoft's Resistance Kille (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#18071376)

The problem Microsoft has with Bungie is the company is just a shell of what they were back when they were a Macintosh game developer(no matter how funny that sounds). Neither of the two Halo games were technically impressive. Games like Killzone on the PS2 and Metroid Prime on the GameCube put the two Halo games to shame.

Bungie has already been doing preemptive damage control for the Halo 3 engine. With the leaked footage we've seen so far it is pretty clear why they are desperate to downplay expectations.

Resistance fails to be a GoW killer (1)

BenJeremy (181303) | more than 7 years ago | (#18076248)

Please, get it straight. It's nice to see a decent shooter for the PS3, but with it being probably the most compelling title for the PS3, it should be selling better than it is.

Microsoft will probably settle in on an alternating cycle - giving shooter fans Halo 3 this holiday season, GoW 2 the next, and so on... Halo defined the Xbox and put it squarely on the map in a way that Resistance has utterly failed. There have been plenty of great shooters for the PS2 and Xbox, but how many truly **defined** a console? Nobody is really getting that sort of vibe from Resistance (no disrespect here, as I said, it is a compelling title); it's a competent shooter and likely the start of a franchise of at least a few more sequels, but if a year from now, it is the "defining" PS3 title, Sony will be woefully in trouble.

Looking at it from the outside, I just get the feeling Resistance is the PS3 Killzone. A better title to "define" the PS3 might have been Gods Of War 2, but we'll see that on PS2, right? I think Sony has fallen into the trap of trying to beat Microsoft, answering GoW with Resistance, doing little, costly things to "beat" the 360, but nothing to really surpass it.

Make no mistake about it: Many gamers who don't own an Xbox 360 today will line up when Halo 3 is released and walk away with both the game and a console to play it on. GoW has caused similar reactions, but has taken a while for people to really experience it and catch the interest. For both consoles, there is simply no "wow" factor without HDTV, so that's a variable that has to be taken into account, but for some gamers, that's just another purchase to play the game they most desire.

Microsoft doesn't need a "Resistance killer". It's already got that in spades, and Halo 3 only ups the ante. If Sony was smart, they'd can the PS2 version and make sure a PS3 version came out that maximized the PS3's power. That doesn't seem to be happening, and without any TRULY compelling exclusives, why should Microsoft sweat it?

Re:Resistance fails to be a GoW killer (1)

BenJeremy (181303) | more than 7 years ago | (#18076268)

Ahhhh, that last bit should have read:

I assume it wouldn't be that hard to enable both pistols on the multiplayer, as long as having an option to disable specific weapons (e.g. the sword). I remember playing Goldeneye on the N64 and that had a greater weapon variety than either Halo.

Take Away The Green Metal And What's Left? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#18069864)

Other than shiny green metal, why should anyone care about the Halo games?

The first game was dreadfully boring with amateur level design and utterly forgetful storyline compared to the old Marathon games.

The second game was just plain screwed up and the online play was nothing remarkable compared to pc online games.

Everything released about the third game indicate it is really nothing much more than more of the same. Even the graphics look amazingly week. What is there that anyone should give a damn about this game other than the fact that Microsoft has the millions to hype it?

Re:Take Away The Green Metal And What's Left? (1)

UnknownSoldier (67820) | more than 7 years ago | (#18070772)

The first Halo had a few good levels.

* The Cartographer
* That snow map I can never remember the name of where you get to drive a tank, warthog, and ghost.

I agree -- I can't stand the sequel, not sure why people make a fuss over it; it's _just_ a shooter. It's the "Quake" killer of the new millennium.

Re:Take Away The Green Metal And What's Left? (2, Informative)

antic (29198) | more than 7 years ago | (#18073664)

The snow map was Assault on the Control Room. Also featured a shortcut where you could skip a fair bit of the level. Actually, two shortcuts since you could get an early Banshee with some well-positioned rockets.

There were some quality maps in Halo 2 as well, but it didn't come together as nicely for me. Reminds me, slightly, of how Quake 2 felt compared to the original.

Still, I played H2 through a couple of times and have had many nights spent on multiplayer with friends - absolute bargain when you consider how much game time I've had out of it.

I wanted to hate Halo, too. (4, Interesting)

SanityInAnarchy (655584) | more than 7 years ago | (#18073838)

I wanted to hate it because it was an Xbox exclusive.

I wanted to hate it because the PC port was half-assed and years late.

I wanted to hate Bungie for selling out to Microsoft -- I've heard rumors that the original Halo was going to be a truly cross-platform (Windows/Mac/Linux) game before Microsoft bought it and made it Xbox only.

I wanted to hate it because FPSes are supposed to be unimaginative... I wanted to love the PS2, because it had Linux, and Final Fantasies...

I wanted to hate it so I didn't have to give another dime to Microsoft.

But you know what?

It's not just green metal. (Where do people get that, anyway? There is NO green metal through most of the games, other than the protagonist.)

It's actually a really damned good game. The graphics may be technologically dated -- it's hard to tell -- but they were amazing for the time, and the artwork is still amazing. The writing may be "uninspired", but it's not so much what they're saying, it's how they're saying it. The Halo may seem to be a cheap ripoff of Ringworld, but they made it real -- I can feel the world under my feet.

Halo was repetitive? Maybe, but it also meant it was decently long (Halo 2 was over too fast), and gave you time to get good at it. And it was fun... You know, I wanted to love Doom 3, because of the native Linux port, and id being generally cool guys and releasing their source, and all the yummy graphics, but the gameplay just isn't that fun. After you've whacked your 50th zombie on the head with a flashlight, and shotgunned your 200th Imp in the face, it's just no longer fun or even particularly hard, but no matter how many Elites I melee in the back, it never gets old -- or any easier.

And a forgettable storyline? Marathon very likely exists within the Halo universe, but I already forget its storyline, sorry...

So, tell me, what shooters are you playing that are better than the Halo games?

Re:I wanted to hate Halo, too. (2)

Cathbadh (971377) | more than 7 years ago | (#18075822)

PC shooters.
Half-Life 2; Battlefield 2; FarCry; Unreal Tournament; the whole of the slew of games that were well-designed for PCs.
Halo in my eyes was simply well-designed for a console. Short of Goldeneye, nobody had ever made a really successful console shooter.

Re:I wanted to hate Halo, too. (2, Interesting)

SanityInAnarchy (655584) | more than 7 years ago | (#18076176)

Of those that I've played: Unreal Tournament doesn't even come close. Gameplay? Might be better, that's a matter of perspective -- I prefer quality over quantity. But Halo actually had a story-driven single-player campaign -- UT just has a story tacked-on to multiplayer against bots instead of humans.

Half-Life 2: Close enough that I'd call it a matter of taste. Halo restricting you to only one or two weapons carried at a time was a nice mechanic, and it's on the whole more solidly put together -- one of the things I love about Half-Life 2 is that it feels like playing through five different games, but I'm not sure that makes it a good game in itself. There's also plenty of things to like about Halo -- game is mostly streamed in Halo, and entirely streamed in Halo 2, while Half-Life 2 makes you wait through 1-2 minute loading screens. Halo 2 actually has co-op, even if it is splitscreen; I don't know of any PC shooters that do co-op campaigns in any form, except maybe for a mod of Half-Life.

Battlefield 2 -- engine sucks, EA sucks. Don't need to say much more about it, and I won't, as I haven't bought it.

You are right that it's one of the few console shooters that's actually worth playing, but I do think it competes well with PC shooters, on just about everything except raw graphics power -- being an Xbox game, it really can't, but check out the Halo 3 trailer, and anyway, I'll take a Halo or Half-Life over Doom 3 or FEAR any day.
