New Species Of Great Cat Found

samzenpus posted more than 7 years ago | from the don't-pet-the-kitty dept.

Science 51

highwaytohell writes "Scientists have found a new species of leopard on Borneo and Sumatra. The Bornean Clouded Leopard or Neofelis Diardi was originally thought to be similar to the mainland Clouded Leopard. However, Dr Stephen O'Brien, Head of the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity, US National Cancer Institute says, "Genetic research results clearly indicate that the clouded leopards of Borneo should be considered a separate species, DNA tests highlighted around 40 differences between the two species." The news comes just a few weeks after a WWF report showed that scientists had identified at least 52 new species of animals and plants over the past year on Borneo."

Ah ha! so that's what the rock is cooking!

they've been the WWE for years and the Rock's been gone for almost as long.

Exactly. He's been off, cooking up this report. What did you think he was up to?

I still call it the WWF. I think its completely ridiculous that a wildlife fund and a wrestling federation can't share a trademark. Trademarks are only supposed to be exclusive for organizations in the same field. This is why Apple continues to be allowed to sell music, as long as they don't produce music, which would make them in conflict with Apple records.

Re:finally! (2, Interesting)

Apple Computer signed an agreement with Apple Records in the 1970s not to ever produce, publish, distribute or sell music, in order to keep the trademark.

Apple Records doesn't have the resources to follow through on the iTunes suit, although they did file one, and are 100% in the right.

I'm guessing you missed the news [wikipedia.org] :

On 5 February 2007, Apple Inc. and Apple Corps announced a settlement of their trademark dispute under which Apple Inc. will own all of the trademarks related to "Apple" and will license certain of those trademarks back to Apple Corps for their continued use. The settlement ends the ongoing trademark lawsuit between the companies, with each party bearing its own legal costs, and Apple Inc. will continue using its name and logos on iTunes. The settlement includes terms that are confidential.
So there will be no more lawsuits between Apple Inc. and Apple Corps. Apple Inc.'s press release [apple.com] .

geekoid (135745) | more than 7 years ago | (#18369863)

And it was still stupid to ahve to come to that agreement.
The intent of trademark is clear:To uniquely identify a brand within an industry.

Gah, stupid people.

It's because the WWF (Wildlife) was getting prank emails from WWF (wrestling) fans due to the proliferation of the internet. The title "WWF" wasn't a problem before everyone and their dog was on the internet.

"Clouded Leopard" sounds more like Vista if you ask me. Same as a OS X Leopard, but cloudier!

Clouded? Maybe they meant how a leopard looks as seen thru broken windows.

You can make a joke about the topic at hand.

Making a joke out of context would be off topic.

Yeah, Mac OSX Leopard wasn't a good enough name, they should rename it Bornean Clouded Leopard.

TFA states:

"For over a hundred years we have been looking at this animal and never realized it was unique.
No new species has been found, an existing one could be reclassified into two seperate species.

Re:Headline incorrect (pendantry) (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#18359019)

40 differences, yet nearly classed as the same species? That's evolution, buddy. Probably been happening since time and geography seperated the species.

Re:Headline incorrect (pendantry) (1)

Cheapy (809643) | more than 7 years ago | (#18359101)

It was found out that the animal was unique. So drop a few words...and a new animal has been found!

So it just had the same mesh and texture? (4, Funny)

Moraelin (679338) | more than 7 years ago | (#18359425)

So it just had the same mesh and texture, but was a different species? Good to see that God takes the same shortcuts Blizzard does. Can't blame Him, though. I mean, have you seen the kind of polygon count and texture resolution these things have? Oooer. It must cost a mint to model a new one, so some reuse is kinda expected ;)

Makes me wonder why He didn't just write the NPCs name above their head, though. I mean, it kinda defeats the purpose of trying to pass it off as a new species, if noone can tell.

And while I'm at it, how about an exclamation mark above quest-giver's heads, please? Talking to everyone in town works when you have 6 NPCs total in the town, like in old NES RPGs, but not when there's a million of them. Plus, they're starting to look funny at me when I ask them if they have a quest.

At least you don't have to crawl through internet message boards looking for rumors. I really wish the denizens would take a hint and color the rumor text red so that I can go down to Kuzunoha and tell him I want that one spread without worrying about whether it's really a rumor.

BTW, did you hear that Trish sells ice cream?

Green Peace creates a new species every day... (1)

SlashdotTroll (581611) | more than 7 years ago | (#18364791)

...with green spray-paint.

Someone was quoted to save a single California Sea Lion by painting a unique symbol on its fur with green paint, and thereby it was "unique" as an endangered species with none other like it and should be saved.

It does' matter what color Green Peace uses. I think ladies in green fur is a hot a jap-anime green-eyed purple-haired pseudo-asians.

Subject incorrect (pendantry) (pedantry) (1, Funny)

kahei (466208) | more than 7 years ago | (#18360263)

I appreciate that exact communication is neither possible nor desirable on Slashdot but I do feel that if you are going to be pedantic you should pretty much be able to spell 'pedantry' correctly.

'Pendantry' could mean any of the following:

"The art of creating things to hang on necklaces"
"Like infantry, only with pends instead of infs"
"The act of writing 'Patent Pending' on every silly darn product your company makes"

I bet I have the perfect meaning for it, though:

Pendantry: The the act of publically correcting others without being either accurate or informed.
Pendantic: Having a tendency toward, or resembling, pendantry.

Example 1:

"Yeah, so, we just got back from la belle ville de Marseilles..."
"Hello?? McFly?? MarsielleS has an S on the end, it doesn't rhyme with 'say'. Did you even actually go there?"
"Er, could you possibly be a little less pendantic?"

Example 2:

"People think America was discovered by Christopher Columbus, but it was actually Lief Ericsson in spring 1002."
"What, exactly 1002? Unless you give me a citation, I'm going to have to call that pure pendantry!"

That's nothing!! (0)

Re:clouded leopard? (1)

J05H (5625) | more than 7 years ago | (#18361171)

"Smoke Jaguar" would be most appropriate for a new American great cat, since it's an old Maya king's name. Ancient trans-Pacific contacts aside, Borneo is a very different place.

Great (4, Insightful)

You just know that somewhere, there is a fashion designer that decides that a glove made of the eyelashes of that animal is going to be the hottest thing next show, because that environment thing is so in right now. Or a thousand old Chinese millionaires who thinks that the powdered penis of this is finally going to cure their impotency.

Re:Great (2, Funny)

Inverted Intellect (950622) | more than 7 years ago | (#18360213)

It is sad that such a graceful animal be wasted on making coats or other fashion items.

It is obvious that its lithe physique has promising potential for exotic cuisine.

Sadly not, the meat of a carnivore is generally rather unpleasant in flavour. Not that that necessarily stops anyone, but it's no accident that if you go to any restaurant, your 'meat' is almost exclusively herbivores.
