Nvidia To Recall Every 8800 GTX/GTS Card

Zonk posted more than 7 years ago | from the cardtastrophie dept.

slashdottit! tm
Bill Stubbs writes "NVIDIA has admitted to a killer bug in all GeForce 8800GTX/GTS cards, and will recall all affected cards and replace them. 'An NVIDIA engineer, who wishes to remain anonymous, has just clued us in on the whole deal. This engineer claims that while allegations of poor gaming performance are correct, the reason is not really poor drivers. Brace yourself for the truth: Right after the G80 was taped out, NVIDIA discovered a bug in the vertex shader that causes the GPU to generate slightly incorrect geometry transformation data. The difference was minimal enough to escape attention but it was significant enough to render a scene incorrectly.' The article also links to a secret website which will allow gamers to purchase Nvidia cards at cost."

Well, at least I won't have to worry about that problem because I have my awesome Radeon 9200 32MB. Thanks, Apple!

If you're not a gamer, I think a card like that is enough for everyday use.

I have a GeForce Go 5200 and when I'm running Os X, it works very well. But there're no 3d-accelerated drivers for linux, so most of the time it's useless. Thanks, Nvidia and Apple!

yeah it's Apple's problem that nvidia don't make linux drivers for the geforce go 5200..

Re:*whew* (0)

You're probably a digg troll, but anyway:
Linux, Solaris and FreeBSD drivers for Nvidia graphics cards are here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html [nvidia.com]

The parent AC says that there are no powerpc linux drivers for nvidia cards, the only ppc drivers are Darwin's released with OSX and closed source.

I have no idea if the drivers where written by Apple with Nvidia specs or if Nvidia wrote the drivers and sold them to apple as you imply. But who cares? Surely Apple has no interest in releasing a linux version (even if closed source), Nvidia should probably care about it because it may help them to sell more cards... we're speaking of a product that's not even sold anymore, Nvidia doesn't care too.

Anyway 3d acceleration support under linux would surely make the powerbooks and ibooks G4 more interesting, as they are relatively cheap on ebay nowadays.

Your vote in the Slashdottit system will help insure the best stories are presented to our readers, with hyper accurate numbers to indicate their relevance and general awesomeness. Only by requiring the contribution of every random user of the internet can we guarantee the most scientifically perfect numbers will be generated. These numbers will guarantee that every story that appears on Slashdot will be interesting, insightful, and flawless. Vote early, vote often.

I saw those things and I thought to myself "No! Not slashdot!" Hysterical.

The fools are the people wasting their time to read the crap Slashdot feeds us, not just today, but every day.

I have better things to do with my time, so I'm banning it from my news sources. Honestly, I'm already so sick of arguing with kids and clarifying poorly written article summaries anyway.

If left to the majority of Slashdotters, Slashdot will feature daily joke articles, free porn (so they don't have to browse to another url), Vista rants, "Linux rules" pleads, and ton of Star Trek / dungeons and Dragons "news".

Wait, short of the porn, this is what you have already. Well on the track to perfection. Have fun.

Never watch The Simpsons with suv4x4. Instead of enjoying a good show, suv4x4 will complain about Bart Simpson still looking 10 years old, even though he should be about 30 years old by now (debut on Tracy Ullman show in 1987).

Never invite suv4x4 to any parties. Suv4x4 is guaranteed to be a downer.

Have you heard that truth is stranger than fiction? Looks at the articles today. Those who are "in" on the jokes think mostly all articles are jokes (even those that are NOT), and someone who's not aware of this idiocy may accept the lies for truth.

If all our news sources were like that, then real news would be taken for a joke and people would be oblivious that they REALLY bought a deffective Nvidia.

If you can perfectly deduce if a news is joke or not, why do you need news at all, it's all perfectly predictable, isn't it. Oh mighty one.

I know, something untrue on the internet - frankly, I'm shocked.

There's lots of crap in the real world as well, not sure how this makes it ok to contribute to the problem.

Some people might think you are a humorless moron. Slashdot does not pretend to be, or promote itself as, an authoritative news source like CNN or the Wall Street Journal. Non-clueless Slashdot readers understand that this site aggregates news stories that "nerds" are interested in so that readers can have entertaining/interesting/informative discussions.

If you can't handle the possibility that a Slashdot story might be a joke on April 1st, then you need get a clue or a sense of humor. The world outside the Internet must be hell for you.

Wow, nice astroturfing for nVidia. If you work for them or own stock, the SEC would be very interested in finding-out more about you considering the misinformation you posted. Claiming bad news is a April 1st joke in an attempt to get investors to ignore the bad news is a very old scam. This is nothing new. The SEC takes this type of scam very seriously.

As the owner of a screwed-up 8800, I take this type of criminal action personally. Maybe you should have posted as an AC.

Re:Whoa (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#18564967)

This is the "hidden page": http://www.techarp.com/0104.htm [techarp.com]

One Last Question...

Congratulations! If you made it this far, we are pretty sure you are NOT an NVIDIA lawyer, or from ATI. Have a beer on us.

We have just one more question for you... Do you know what day it is today?

Yes, my friend, it's April 1st. Adrian's uncle was born on this day, but it's really more commonly known as April Fool's Day.

Unfortunately, there is no secret page where you can buy cheap NVIDIA cards. How we wish it were true though. Graphics cards are so very expensive.

The good news is that there is no such bug in the vertex shader of the G80. So, if you are an owner of GeForce 8800 GTX/GTS cards, you can relax on that count. Your oh-so-expensive graphics cards are not crippled in any way.

But if you are one of those who were, just moments ago, feeling vindicated that it was the card that caused your gaming skills to suffer, we are sorry to bust your chops but as they say, don't blame the tool, blame the user.

Re:Whoa (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#18566369)

And, strictly speaking, the 8800 doesn't even have dedicated "vertex shaders". It has 96 or 128 floating point units which can be assigned to the task of vertex processing, or pixel processing (or any computation you want, thanks to CUDA).

Re:Whoa (1)

Plutonite (999141) | more than 7 years ago | (#18565025)

Investors should take a break on April 1st, and it's Sunday anyway. All effects to the stock of a company, if any, should be short lived as "sly" investors would rush back upon realisation of the joke hoping to benefit from the dip in price. Result is that the price would shoot back up, maybe even landing a coupla feet further than it was in the first place. Clowns.

Re:Whoa (1)

Cap'nPedro (987782) | more than 7 years ago | (#18565151)

Yeah, I've just bought an 8800GTX, in the UK. £350 is about $690; that's a lot of cash for a 16-year-old to be spending at once. Seeing that in your morning RSS feeds before thinking about the date is damn scary.

Honestly, I was expecting something more to do with ponies and such, rather than cheap scare tactics.

This could really boost the NVIDIA Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) [nvidia.com] hence number crunching projects like the Netflix Prize, which needs a second wind right about now due to a slowdown of progress in recent weeks [netflixprize.com] . This depends, of course, on the detected error not being critical to the programs compiled for the 8800 hardware by CUDA, and on NVIDIA making the returned 8800s available for CUDA programmers.

I can't really remember by password, and this has been my first post in a long long time.

slashdot.org -1 redundant!

Anyone else only visits slashdot on april fools day now?

For those who actually RTFA, a link to secret page (3, Informative)

Devistater (593822) | more than 7 years ago | (#18564839)

If you RTFA you'll notice they tell you about a secret page you can reach by answering a quiz. Here's the link: http://www.techarp.com/0104.htm [techarp.com] Quote from it: "Unfortunately, there is no secret page where you can buy cheap NVIDIA cards. How we wish it were true though. Graphics cards are so very expensive."

From the article:

NVIDIA might recall all affected cards and replace them right away with GeForce 8600 Ultra/GTS cards, and offer those affected a free day-trip to NVIDIA HQ and lunch with NVIDIA CEO and President, Huang Jen-Hsun.

APRIL FOOLS!

I mean... I came here specifically to see what April 1st rumors Slashdot would try to spread. But they did not get it really right this time.

So far, the best one this year was a Swiss website that announced a traffic minister to introduce some new "climate initiative" that would contain partial dismantling of freeways.

The second best one is kuro5hin's Tron story, which I liked:
http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2007/3/28/132751/380 [kuro5hin.org]

But NVIDIA trying to get their cards back? Give me a break. So far, the only company who went to replace hardware WITHOUT BEING ASKED to was AMD who went to replace some Opteron 254s for free. And when the contractor announced it, we thought it was a prank, and did background checks and all, which caused them some trouble as well. Turned out an isolated batch had been gone past some checks and AMD had Siemens fix it before it caused problems, without announcing it through "official channels".

But NVIDIA? They should be happy if they get their stuff out to the customer to begin with. My bet is before that, it will be a particularly cold day in hell, and then, Apple will call back their laptops to "fix" them before NVIDIA goes to get some gamers' xyz coordinates fixed by 0.1 pixels. So let's hear it for Apple callbacks :-) that company makes the whole year look like April Fool's day if you're the customer. Apple Fool's day, 24 / 365.

Maybe we should be aware of the fact that this sort of "jokes" will lead to Slashdot being pulled from the internet and replaced with Web 2.0 applications, most of which will run some sort of framework that will only be compatible with a particular browser version (Mozilla 4.78, I think).

This one's actually true (1)

...Except the killer bug is called "Vista".

How about a bigger recall? (1)

BillGatesLoveChild (1046184) | more than 7 years ago | (#18565413)

This is a good step, but support from nVidia in the past has been poor. I bought an nVidia 5700 two years ago and the driver hangs. This is known popularly as the "nv4_disp infinite loop bug". Searched on Google and many others have had the same problem. But you can't get anything done about it, and it affects the 6xxx and 7xxx series cards too.

nVidia tell you to technical support requests must go to the OEM card maker. But all the OEM card maker does is slap chips on a board. They don't know about the inner workings of drivers and nVidia know that. If you ask on the nVidia forum, they always say "download and install the latest driver". I and many others have been doing that for the last two years and it makes no difference. The funny thing is nVidia don't have any presence on their own forums. As they say their 'User Forums' are "with your fellow NVIDIA users". *NOT* nVidia!!!! They offer e-mail support.. for products purchased but *ONLY OFF* the nVidia website. But nVidia sell their cards through OEMs!!! In other words, you can't get any support from them. http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=4432& st=100 [nvidia.com] http://www.nvidia.com/page/support.html [nvidia.com]

So, nVidia, you've been slowly trashing your own name for years. Glad you're taking this issue seriously, but your lack of support on all your past cards is chasing us into the arms of ATI. I hope they can do better. In the tech industry you can't sell a box without support and expect to keep a good name.

geforce 8800 have real problem with shadows, for example in oblivion and splinter cell double agent shadows are really aliased, while on call of juarez they flash continuosly

This is cruel (1)

marcomarrero (521557) | more than 7 years ago | (#18566581)

Why not pink ponies!? :( Actually in my nVidia 6600GT something in the 3D unit was cooked to death, and I even had the temp monitor on. When I installed Vista all I got was a giant unreadable psychedelic desktop. Now I have Direct3D off. :(

For a millisecond, when I read "nVidia recall" - I saw hope. :(
