Red vs. Blue Series to Wind Down

Zonk posted more than 7 years ago | from the it-must-have-been-a-chupacabra-after-all dept.

Television 38

Via Joystiq, the news at the Red vs. Blue site that the 100th episode will be their last. Despite the 04/01 posting date of the announcement, it looks like the reality is that there are only a handful of episodes of the Blood Gulch Chronicles left. "One hundred is a great number, and it seems like the perfect place to call it a show. I am sure you have some questions about our plans for the series and beyond. We will be talking about all of that in the weeks and months to come, but I want to use this time to thank all of you for nearly half a decade of support. For now, it's back to work. From the recent developments in the storyline, you may have noticed some loose ends coming together and we have a lot to wrap up in the last seven videos. We hope you will love them as much as the first seven or the middle seven or whatever it was that initially drew you to the world of Red vs Blue." It's always great to see a series go out on a high note, and one can only hope that the folks at RoosterTeeth plan to work on new projects in the future.

God I hope GWB wins again - someone needs to finish off that anus of a country.

While I'll certainly miss RvB, I can't wait to see what's next from the crew behind it.

Thanks for everything, RoosterTeeth, and best wishes for the future!

Man, I'm gonna miss RvB... Hopefully whatever they do next will be better than that Strangerhood one they did [shudders].

I read that the DVDs are not as good as downloading the videos because sometimes the last few seconds of the episodes is chopped off. It's something to do with episodes that trail with a few seconds of audio, but no video. Is this true?

Actually, it's the other way around. More video was put in to go with the dialog.

You know how the characters keep telling jokes after the fade to black? Well, when they edited the episodes together, that created a problem. So they modified the endings to have more video to go with the voices. In some cases they redid the scenes. I haven't seen the result, but my understanding is that it gives the series a different pacing.

In that case, I look forward to buying the 100-episode box set, because I've only seen a couple scattered episodes.

Sometimes they trim dialog that goes into the credits. Sometimes they go back and do extra video to cover that section for the DVD release.

Live Action Halo movie = probably rent it when bored
Live Action RVB movie = already waiting in line at the theater

Hopefully, the live action would mimic the animation of the orignal episodes. Also keep the helmets on. /hope

And then... the thing - it was BRIIiiiiGGhht - showed up... AND Church was all like THIS and I was like THAT and...

Are you the audience eeeeeeenjooooooying this show? Ok? Good.

So then Church was hitting me... AND I was like "Church! Why are you hitting me?"

But! He. Just. Kept. Hitting. Me.

I know. Who would have thought that CHURCH would have... such a mean streak?

And then I was alone. I don't like being alone. Alone is not good.

Oh, hi Shelia! Shelia is my friend. Shelia, you're not going to blow me up again... are you? And don't blow up Church. I like Church. He's my friend.

Transcripts (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#18610221)

I understand RvB is NSFW. Are there transcripts of the funniest episodes that I can read online?

Re:Transcripts (1)

peragrin (659227) | more than 7 years ago | (#18610517)

why all the episodes are available online.

View them yourself. I became a paying member just to watch them earlier. Heck even the low res ones looks decent on my tv, i can't imagine what the dvd sets look like.

Very good, but the piracy warning screens are worth watching in their own right!

I can't believe it's still going...jumped the shark around the sixth or seventh episode.

Then again, I thought The Simpsons has been going downhill since they started doing celebrity episodes...and that was probably about fifteen years ago.

Dude -- it didn't jump the shark, it rocket-jumped the shark, which blew up the shark into itty bitty sharkbits, which was so awesome it unjumped the shark and bought a bag of chips!

If that sentence wasn't awesome, please exit at the next platform and leave my entertainment alone. :-)

Normally I have a built up resistance to non-sequitors like that one, but the bag of chips actually had me laugh out loud enough for people around me to notice.

I was going to reply with the subject set as "going out on a high note?", but then I scrolled down, noticed your post, and decided to reply here.

Red vs. Blue, as much as I enjoyed the first half-dozen or so episodes, couldn't go out on a high note without travelling back through time and stopping after, say, episode 6. Maybe 7.

I can't remember it exactly but it was right around there that it went from being quite a bit funny and more than a bit rude to being fairly stupid for episode after episode until I gave up and stopped watching it.

I even gave it the benefit of the doubt a few years later and tried watching the episodes available on xbox live for the 360. Nope, still stupid. :(

Mostly kinda boring anyway... (2, Insightful)

posterlogo (943853) | more than 7 years ago | (#18610827)

It was a great concept and they executed it beautifully, but besides some shining gems, the writing was sub-par. Without a great narrative, no amount of technology is gonna save a series. Many of the episodes got kind of boring. Some were just flat out off the deep end.

Dan Slotman (974474) | more than 7 years ago | (#18611677)

I agree with this. I really liked the first season, and watched each episode as it was released. I lost interest midway through the second season and never really went back. They did have some really great jokes though. "Shotgun!" "Shotgun!" "Fuck."

It was better once Donut joined them: "Shotgun!" "Shotgun! Fuck." "Shotgun's lap!" "Fuck!"

You guys are missing some of the best episodes! Like the whole, "I could tell you what it wasn't doing" skit.

Re:Mostly kinda boring anyway... (1)

Dan Slotman (974474) | more than 7 years ago | (#18612839)

Huh, yeah... we have very different senses of humor. I thought the funniest joke of that episode was, "Errrph hernia!" as they were lifting the jeep. And I didn't think the "I could tell you what we weren't doing..." joke was very funny at all. But hey, tastes differ. I did really like that season finale episode where there were a bunch of time-traveling clones....

Re:Mostly kinda boring anyway... (1)

antic (29198) | more than 7 years ago | (#18612327)

Watched one episode a while back and found a few parts funny, but it was mostly the novelty and that it was Halo that interested me. Went back and downloaded an episode last week from Xbox Live and it was pretty lame to be honest.

Re:Mostly kinda boring anyway... (1)

kjart (941720) | more than 7 years ago | (#18618061)

Heh, "save a series"? You forget, sir, this is the internet - people can do whatever they want. Case in point [youtube.com] .

Re:Mostly kinda boring anyway... (1)

posterlogo (943853) | more than 7 years ago | (#18623211)

Well, you're partly right, but you're assuming that they can just sit around making these episodes for free. If it starts to take up too much time, it won't just be a hobby anymore, it's a job. And if you're relying on it for income, you stick with it as long as it generates income, but if it stops doing that, you gotta get another job.

Heres to hoping... (1)

MMaestro (585010) | more than 7 years ago | (#18615317)

That they get a real budget next time they work on a project like this. I'll admit that I thought the series had its ups and downs (more Tex, less O'Malley) but you can't really expect A+ material every episode considering this is machinima. Next time the Red vs. Blue team gets together, hopefully they'll have a real budget instead of getting by on donations and subscriptions.
