Knight Rider Car for Sale

samzenpus posted more than 7 years ago | from the I-work-for-the-knight-foundation dept.

It's funny. Laugh. 151

It's time to put on your leather jacket and get ready to hit Turbo Boost. The talking 1982 Pontiac Trans Am from the 80's hit Knight Rider is up for sale. No word on if it comes with David Hasslehoff but with a price tag of $149,995 I'm sure it won't be on the lot for long. I wonder how much the Knight Foundation will give me on a trade in for Magnum PI's Ferrari?

Don't do it! (5, Funny)

It's a trap! As has recently been discovered, KITT is a Cylon [thinkgeek.com] !

So, unless you particularly enjoy the thought of a genocidal car constantly messing with your mind and trying to take over your home planet, don't buy it.

What a situation, loaded with mod points, but not sure at all how to moderate.
Never happened to me before. It could go any way: Flamebait, Troll, Funny, Interesting, Overrated

There should be a category for "WARNING: Contains link to pretty sad music video"

Anyway, thanks for posting that link... I guess. I'm not touching your post with a 10-foot mod-pole.

Certainly, among what you call miracles, "music talent" is not included. However, the "hypnotic" feature to trap girls, might be useful for more than one here.

Now the question is: Does KITT runs linux?

Re:Yes, ... (1)

The car wasn't a Fury. The Fury doesn't have rear doors. The "Hydramatic" transmission was developed by GM for Oldsmobile. The Fury uses a pushbutton transmission, not a shift lever. In the movie, they used two cars, a Belvedere and a Savoy.

It was definitely a nice looking car for the time, I watched the pilot and I know this might have been partly intentional, but all the other cars in the pilot were just ugly. Still, it's kind of dated now, in my opinion.

Well, if the Dukes of Hazzard could have 300+ cars [wikipedia.org] , then surely Knight Rider could have at least a paltry 100!

Through the history of the show, an estimated 309 General Lees were used. Twenty three are still known to exist in various states of repair.

No, you must be wrong there. Didn't it run on water and get 200mpg? That's why the car is expensive - no fuel bills.

Re:No David, and more caveats. (1)

SomeoneGotMyNick (200685) | more than 7 years ago | (#18619995)

Not quite. Even though Devon mentioned in the pilot episode it was "Completely fuel efficient", either in the pilot or first series episode, Michael stops and fills up the tank at the pumps. He even got the gas for free because the attendant had gotten spooked after trying to puncture the impervious tires to get a quick tire sale out of the transaction.

Re:No David, and more caveats. (2, Insightful)

Sqweegee (968985) | more than 7 years ago | (#18619559)

Nothing prevents you from buying it and using it in another state or country where emissions aren't checked regularly.

No worries about emissions (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#18619809)

Ship it to 'my state' (No my state is NOT some 'backwater' some would like to believe)

From my state:
"Vehicles from model year 1996 are subject to vehicle emissions tests. Vehicles 1995 and older, not in compliance with the law as of February 1, 2007 are also subject to testing. Beginning in its fourth model year, a vehicle is inspected every two years. For example, 1997 model year vehicles were first tested in 2001, then in 2003, 2005, and every two years thereafter. 1998 vehicles were first tested in 2002, then in 2004, 2006, and every two years thereafter."

Basically, for all intents and purposes ODBI cars are emissions exempt now (LT1 guys out here are having a ball now!)
Testing is basically done using READY TESTING..basic scanning of the ODBII computer.
No more 'rollers' and 'sniffers'.

But then again.. emissions is an easy thing to deal with on an ODBII car.
Heck.. I have heads/cam LT headers ORY 3' custom out the back..and no cats...pushing est.497 crank HP (based on calculations of the drive train with a 4000 stall). I pass emissions every time on an ODBII ready test scan. But if you 'smell' it, you'd swear it was on race gas. Nope. Just premium pump.

So the short of it is.. California is not the center of the universe. Ship it to us. We'll have a ball with it.

(Posted anonymously to avoid having a cadre of greenie weenies outside my home banging drums and stinkin' up the place..)

Re:No David, and more caveats. (1)

C_L_Lk (1049846) | more than 7 years ago | (#18619991)

Actually various states and provinces have regulations regarding collector cars, classic cars, and other special one-off items that allow you to completely bypass any and all current emission and safety requirements. If you take your Model A for a Sunday drive, it doesn't have to be equipped with safety belts, automatic windshield wipers, or even a functional front bumper - and obviously it doesn't have to meet any emissions requirements. Chances are good in most areas, at least in North America, where the buyer for this vehicle is somewhat likely to be (after all they are buing it from a San Francisco Bay Area dealership from a seller in Livermore) - a special custom car such as this, being a piece of TV memorabilia, custom built and made, and over 20 years old, you could apply and make the case for a classic or custom car status, and be allowed to drive it on the highway. Perhaps under certain restrictions, but, still wouldn't have to be "trailered only".

Not for me. (1)

Bah get a replica instead for far less (2, Informative)

Lumpy (12016) | more than 7 years ago | (#18618773)

Look online the guy that makes the replicas can give you a turn key for less than $70,000 that is complete and to match the season you want.

Paying huge $$$ for the origional from a B rated Tv show is silly unless you are trillionaire collector. That prop will not go up in price like other items out here.

Re:Bah get a replica instead for far less (0, Troll)

edward2020 (985450) | more than 7 years ago | (#18618957)

Oh, I disagree. Just imagine the warm fuzzy feeling you'd have driving it around. And just think. We've all been in the situation where we come across some strange substance while investigating a mystery. But no more! 'Cause this car has a built in mass spectrometer (unless the H-Man kept that for himself). With this and the A-Team van, there's really no stopping you.

On a more serious note, $70,000 is too much. What do you get, a circa 1980s trans-am with ground effects? Unless a person just has a huge amount of wealth to waste, most people could find a better use for 70K. Anyone could get a better ROI.

Re:Bah get a replica instead for far less (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#18619313)

yes that is all you get. you see rich people are stupider than shit and people see them old crappy cars with some stick on ground effects for lots of money.

glad to see you took 2 seconds to google it so you knew what you were talking about.

I have see one of the replicas that lumpy is talking about, there are craploads of custom electronics and hand laid fiberglass and leather everywhere.

I don't know why you'd call Knight Rider, "B rated". It's campy and cheesy in retrospect, but it wasn't cheap or unpopular.

Paying huge $$$ for the origional [sic] from a B rated Tv show is silly unless you are trillionaire collector.

As opposed to, say, paying $70,000 for a replica which sure ain't silly!?

;)

Besides that, should you decide your decision was silly, I'm pretty sure it would be easier to re-sell the original, maybe even with a profit margin. Overall I don't think your comment makes much sense.

Re:Its an original (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#18619981)

The replica of the car that was used in benchwarmers is worth far more money that one of the beat to hell 50 that were made for the tv show.

No mention of its designer... (2, Interesting)

...Jay Ohrberg, who also designed and/or built such notable vehicles as the original cruiser for RoboCop [robertwebb.com] (not the spraypainted Taurus we now know), the 100' limo [thelongest...nglast.com] , the original Bat-mobile (designed by George Barris), the Pink Panther car [cityoflondon.gov.uk] , and a handful other more or less practical vehicles.

KITT through the ages (5, Funny)

ettlz (639203) | more than 7 years ago | (#18619291)

The original KITT AI:

Michael, are you sure that's a good idea?
Then, in 1997, came KITTY:

Hello, Lone-Crusader-In-A-Dangerous-World! It looks like you're trying to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless, and the powerless in a world of criminals who operate above the law. Would you like me to:
  • Blockade the bad guys?
  • Tell you remember your seat-belt?
  • Track down the bad guy with my hypersonic moustache-sensor?
  • Do a trick?
Ten years later, we have KITSTA:

The operation "Emergency Stop" requires extra privileges. Cancel, Allow?

that doesn't sound like a lot of money (2, Funny)

I'm sort of surprised that hasselhoff himself isn't buying the car.

I know he really hated that show near the end, and after it was canceled he started referring to his 'gigs' showing up with the car as 'the dog and pony show'. Still though, how funny would it be to throw on a leather jacket and go cruising in your old talking car?

He might not get the babes, but what cop in his right mind would give him a speeding ticket? He's the KnightRider!

career opportunity - car pals! (1)

Simonetta (207550) | more than 7 years ago | (#18619327)

This really is a career opportunity. Take an older car towards which males of a certain age feel an emotional affirmative bond. Add a CPU with an "Eliza" program, a speech synthesizer, a text-to-speech analyser, and add robotic interfaces to the vehicle's motion controls. Sell for ten times the price of the car and the electronics.

It is not a good idea to assume that there is always going to be a job awaiting you and your skills. An idea like the one above provides a means to generate an income using your skills outside the 'human resources' envelope. So don't snicker at it so comtemptously.

I can see it now. "Why do you say let's so double killer delete select all?"

I used to work in a 10min quick lube. One of these up close cars was in frequently for oil changes. It looked pretty cool. Had these little cassette things that would play kitt's voice.

Most of the buttons don't do anything, Verhoek said
Does this mean one of the buttons might do something? If I push them all but eject, and they all do nothing, should I not push eject??
