Sony Announces New Exclusive Rockstar Title

Zonk posted more than 7 years ago | from the sorta-kinda-makes-up-for-gta-i-guess dept.

Sony 97

The official PlayStation blog has the word that Rockstar is gifting Sony with a brand-new franchise. Gift is probably the wrong word; I'm sure it cost a pretty penny to obtain those exclusivity rights. Just the same, as Gamespot notes, this is a good sign for a company that's lost a number of fish to Microsoft over the last year: "Recently, more and more titles which were previously thought to be exclusive to one console or another have been announced as multiplatform, including Assassin's Creed, Fatal Inertia, and Devil May Cry 4. Some media speculation stated that former Sony chief Ken Kutaragi's 'slowness' in tying up the red tape of the deals had led to Sony losing exclusives for the PS3." No word on what the game is, other than it is not L.A. Noire.

And apparently it's provisionally called Jack Thompson's Baby Slicing, Dicing, Cooking, and Chomping Challenge.

Though they are concerned about the poor taste in basing the game on Jack Thompson, so some changes may be imminent.

Soooo, sometime in the future, an unnamed and unknown franchise will be released exclusively on the PS3, eventually. Thanks for the update. One last question, will it be a franchise like Table Tennis, or something larger. Why is this news again?

I find it hilarious and slightly sad that a positive news item for the PS3, only results in people making fun of / bashing Sony / Rockstar, when a negative article posted a few hours later about the 360, results in serious discussion in the replies on the article.

Why can't we all just get along? :)

Jack Thompson's Baby Slicing, Dicing, Cooking, and Chomping Challenge would probably play better on the Wii; you could hold the remote/nunchuck together like jaws and actually "chomp" on the babies in-game.

Re:Did they pay for it? (1)

Aladrin (926209) | more than 7 years ago | (#20047913)

You and Sony can call it 'change of position', but Sony's version of that is 'No we are not planning to have a price cut' and then announcing it 3 days later, after word leaks to the net of sale papers that already have the price in them, with pictures to prove it. Those papers aren't produced overnight.

Re:Did they pay for it? (1)

I was commenting on the OP's comment "Sony said previously they weren't interested in paying for exclusives...". If you'd like to find someone to argue with about the definition of lying in regards to Sony's price cut, you'll have to look elsewhere. Sorry, we're all out of crazy.

Re:Did they pay for it? (1)

Sony's recent statements proves what their attitude towards lying is. There's no need to argue it.

Having lied in the last week, I see no problem thinking they will continue to lie in the forseeable future whenever it suits their fancy.

Gravatron (716477) | more than 7 years ago | (#20059921)

Reminds me of Nintendo denying a redesigned DS the day before they showed the DS Lite. Companies do this all the time, you don't normally annouce new models/prices in advance, because then no one buys them in the current form or current price.

Re:Did they pay for it? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#20050031)

Well, since 360 media size limit is 9GB and no all models have HDDs, compared to 50GB discs and HDD in all models from Ps3, I think specially Sandbox-type games can be greatly benefitted from games exclusive to Ps3, made with that platform limits in mind.
I'm sure professional game developers can think of even better ways to use Ps3 supperior technical limits.

They earned it by making a real next gen system that developers like Rockstar want to work on.

Next gen graphics system - 1080p support easily on the PS3
Standard harddrive on all PS3 models
Next gen storage format - 25 or 50 gigs of storage space
Free online with dedicated servers and the amazing Home online world

No wonder you hear developers absolutely fawning over doing PS3 development and nothing but cries of pain from developers forced to work on the 360.

360 7gig DVD Drive Bites MS In The Ass - Again (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#20046451)

It is good to hear that Rockstar is working on a real next gen game that isn't going to be gimped by the crappy/weak 360 hardware. Microsoft could have gone with a real next gen storage format like BluRay but they had to be whiny bitches over their VC1 codec that no one uses any more now that HD-DVD is dead.

It shouldn't surprise anyone why GTAIV has turned out so crappy looking. Rockstar was forced to fit the game on a 1gig smaller disc size compared to last gen. Amazing and pathetic.

Last gen it was:

PS2 with 8 gigs of DVD storage - 4 gigs per layer
Xbox with 8 gigs of DVD storage - 4 gigs per layer

This it is:

PS3 with 50 gigs of BluRay storage - 25 gigs per layer
360 with 7 gigs of BluRay storage - 3.5 gigs per layer

You have to feel for the Rockstar developers who are forced to work on the gimped 360 hardware. They can't even rely on a standard harddrive on the 360.

Sucks if you are a GTA fan to have your favorite game ruined by Microsoft's crappy hardware but it hilarious if you think about the sequence of events:

* Microsoft rush crappy and gimped 360 hardware out the door - no standard harddrive, 1 gig smaller storage compared to last gen

* Microsoft pays 50 million dollars to Rockstar so 360 owners have to buy extra missions that could have just been on the disc if Microsoft had a real next gen storage format

* GTA is gimped by the sucky 360 hardware making it a nightmare for Rockstar to deal with

* Rockstar take's Microsoft's money and uses it to create a real next gen game for Sony's PS3

Thanks Microsoft!

Aw, poor Sony fanboy, feeling bad about already losing the console war in less than a year?

PS2 with 8 gigs of DVD storage - 4 gigs per layer
Xbox with 8 gigs of DVD storage - 4 gigs per layer

This it is:

PS3 with 50 gigs of BluRay storage - 25 gigs per layer
360 with 7 gigs of BluRay storage - 3.5 gigs per layer
Ignoring the fact that you're completely wrong on the Xbox 360 specs (the Xbox 360 doesn't use BluRay), you forgot to mention that the Xbox 360 drive is a 12X drive and the PS3 drive is a 2X drive.

Now I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a faster loading game than a game loaded with HD cinimatics.

There's also this:

Xbox 360 + PS2: $400 + $120 = $520: Full PS2/PS1 compatibility, largest next-gen game library
PS3: $600: Incomplete PS2/PS1 compatibility, smallest next-gen game library

So for $80 more, I get a console with less compatibility and fewer games. Why would I want to do that?

Yeah, obviously not bluray, which makes me severly question this 'one gig less' theory of his. I've never heard any mention of the discs being smaller than the old DVDs, and frankly it makes no sense. Is this guy talking out of his ass even more? Also, to the GP: have you actually played a fucking 360? (and not just on your mommy's 24" tv)

Re:360 7gig DVD Drive Bites MS In The Ass - Again (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#20046815)

"I've never heard any mention of the discs being smaller than the old DVDs"

Welcome to Earth!

Xbox 360 DVD discs can't use around a gig or so you end up with something like only ~7 gigs of space that is usable by developers while a standard DVD is a little over 8 gigs IIRC.

That comes out to about 3.5 gigs per DVD layer on the 360. That is why Rockstar has been complaining so loudly about the 360. For free roaming games like GTA you are effectively constrained to just one layer because it is too costly to keep going back and forth across DVD layers.

3.5 gigs is a shockingly small amount of storage in 2007. Even Id's new game was using 20 gigs worth of just texture data in their recent demo.

Really? Mind linking to any stories indicating this?

Every tech sheet I can find lists the Xbox 360 as using a standard 12X dual-layer DVD-ROM drive. No indication that it's anything smaller than 9GB.

Provide some link to something indicating that the Xbox 360 really is wasting 2GB of space please. Otherwise I think you're simply full of it.

Re:360 7gig DVD Drive Bites MS In The Ass - Again (0, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#20047381)

The 360's drive is a standard, and noisy as a jet engine, 12X DL DVD drive. The gig or gig and a half less storage is some sort of DRM or security system for the 360 that ends up leaving around 7 gigs of space for developers to use.

google 360 dvd 7 gigs

It is amazing that the 360 is the first console ever to ship with a smaller than previous gen storage solution.

GP was wrong about the XBox drive - it's DVD, as you mention. However, you're wrong to compare the speed of the drives. A 12X DVD drive, like in the XBox 360, reads 16MB/s. A 2X BluRay drive, like in the PS3, reads data at 72MB/s. So, all things otherwise equal*, the PS3 should load much faster than the XBox 360.

*all things are not otherwise equal

From what I've read, the ps3's BD drive is slower on seak time due to the data density while it's read time is faster. So on average a Ps3 game loads a bit slower then a 360's due exclusively to a higher seek tiem related to higher data density. Not by a huge margine. More liek 10%-20% range.

The garenteed presence of a HD completely negates this advantage so long as the programmer isn't stupid and caches some data, the pre-caching will negate the speed difference. Although I think your confusing Mbit and MB. Blu ray is 72 Mbit while the x16 DVd is 16 MB. all theoretical.

Re:360 7gig DVD Drive Bites MS In The Ass - Again (1)

senatorpjt (709879) | more than 7 years ago | (#20052413)

You're right about the base data rate of Bluray being higher (obviously?), but I believe the 2x bluray drive in the PS3 is something like half as fast at data transfer as the 12x in the 360.

The current PS3 costs $499 and has the EE hardware for PS2 compatibility so it is actually $20 cheaper than 360+PS2 and also has BluRay, Bluetooth, and WiFi included. The more important reason to favor the PS3 is that it will be more likely to still be in production 2 years from now. Look at past performance:

PS1 was in production for 11 years.
PS2 has been in production for 7 years and is still going strong.
PS3 was recently introduced and is now selling strong (after price reduction)

XBox was canned after 4 years of production.
XBox360 is 2 years into production with a 30% defect rate that will cost MS over $1 Billion to fix.

There's no way I'd buy a 360 and hope they'll still be producing and supporting them 2 years from now. MS has been in the console gaming business 6 years and has yet to turn a profit. They probably never will. Past performance may be no guarantee of future results but you'd be stupid to buy a 360 now.

At least according to Amazon.com's bestsellers list, which the Sony fanboy crowd apparently thinks is gospel. Too bad looking at anything beyond the top two slots demonstrates that the PS3 is losing, and losing bad. Comes down to this, Rockstar has been working with sony since the PS1, all the GTAs, the vast majority of their side projects are all on sony platforms. GTA4 however, Rockstar got it ready to soon, there simply isnt enough units on either platform to maintain the sales they want for it so its going multi-platform, something Rockstar had told sony. However, like many of the companies who've been working with Sony all this time, when it came time for a new project, they continued on with sony. The new game is supposed to be based around rockstar trying to make the ultimate game for PS3, using BD and Cell as best they can, so could be interesting. There is 3 more Sony press confs/events this year so we may hear more then, or it might be next year or the year after when someones ready to talk on it.

Im guessing becuase devlopers actually pay attention to whats going rather than listening to the random spewing from forums. PS3s selling ahead of the PS1 PS2 and 360 curve, their machine is stable, and thanks to bluray is going to be a great asset to the MP and Sandbox games of the future (something which Rockstar in invested in).

Re:Hmmmm (1)

Winckle (870180) | more than 7 years ago | (#20049461)

Can't they pay attention to which console has a higher installed base? The 360 has sold many more units, and therefore more people can buy the game.

For the record, I don't have either, I have a wii :)

Re:Hmmmm (1)

MeanderingMind (884641) | more than 7 years ago | (#20057031)

Rockstar doesn't care about being popular, they like doing things for the express reason of it being unheard of, crazy, shocking and otherwise from left field. Manhunt 2 on the Wii, for example, wouldn't be something you'd expect on a console often assumed to be family friendly. Table Tennis isn't what you'd expect a developer with Rockstar's history to develop as their first offering this generation.

They're the Monty Python of video games, constantly shocking and surprising.

Rockstar = PC developer (2, Interesting)

MMaestro (585010) | more than 7 years ago | (#20047591)

Except for the fact that Rockstar was originally a PC focused developer and they've been developing games for consoles besides the PS1 and PS2 on and off for years. The Dreamcast got GTA2, the Xbox got GTA3 and VC, the PC got all of the mainstream GTAs, the 360 got Table Tennis and soon GTA4. Rockstar may "seem" loyal to Sony, but thats only because of how the video game market played out last generation. This generation, Rockstar is a wild card. The Wii (might) get Manhunt 2, GTA4 for the 360 is guaranteed and the PSP GTA games did sell but didn't blow people away in sales.

Rockstar was never a "PC focused developer". DMA Design created the first-ever GTA game for the PC first, but that was before Rockstar had anything to do with them. As soon as Rockstar took over, consoles came first. It's inaccurate to say that Rockstar was ever PC-focused - DMA Design was for exactly one game, but Rockstar never has been.

It's really no different than saying Microsoft was originally a Super Nintendo-oriented game publisher just because they purchased Rare, and therefore MS is unlikely to keep first-party games exclusive. Rare was Nintendo-focused, not Microsoft. It doesn't go both ways.

As for all those games on non-Sony systems, for one thing you have *only* listed non-exclusive titles. And in every case prior to GTA4, Sony got these games a year or even more before any other console. The only reason that's not happening with GTA4 if the money MS threw at them - and all that money was able to buy was a day and date release and some episodic content, not a 360 exclusive. It's still coming to PS3, because Rockstar wants it to.

Don't underestimate the power of relationships and loyalty in Rockstar's development plans. This is not a company that always thinks with its wallet.

MMaestro (585010) | more than 7 years ago | (#20053567)

First off, GTA2, GTA:London 1961 and Max Payne 1 and 2 all came out for PC before their console ports. Second, GTA2 came out for the Dreamcast 6 months after the PS1 version, not the 1+ year(s) you claim. Third, State of Emergency was a Xbox exclusive and Smuggler's Run Warzones was a Gamecube exclusive.

Quit putting shit out of your ass like a PS3 fanboy. You're embarrassing Rockstar.

I was impressed with GTA:San Andreas' world. You could drive (or fly) for a long time without running out of world. It boggles my mind what they're going to be able to do with Blu-Ray capacity at their disposal.

You think that is impressive...

Ever play a little PC Game called Elderscrolls: Daggerfall?

Talk about a game world bigger than big, and fit o a single CD and under 1GB uncompressed on your HDD, and ran on a Pentium I.

And the graphics were not that bad either.

You Know (3, Interesting)

dunezone (899268) | more than 7 years ago | (#20046849)

This current generation is just awful. All the three big companies have been doing is either bragging about their exclusives or promising new and better features down the road.

I want to see the results of this. I'm tired of waiting for all these promises. I'm tired of being disappointed. I want it to be delivered not stated and put off till god knows when.

Sony stated it the best a while ago. Your investing in potential. As much as I hate them, they admitted to it. For the first time a console company in the industry admitted that your buying potential in a console.

All its been is this. Microsoft and Sony are bickering over who has more or better exclusive titles. And Nintendo keeps promising us online game play and their real flagship titles this fall.

I own a 360, I only play Guitar Hero 2, its the only game that screams "come back and play me". I also own a Wii, a complete disappointment, once I finished Zelda there was nothing left. Nintendo leaving out online multiplayer right off the back showed me that they are still behind. There was no excuse for that not to be there at launch. As for the PS3, I cant justify the steep price right now, blu-ray or not I want a gaming console not a blu-ray player.

I will say this though. For the first time in a while I was floored by a single game this generation. This has only happened a few times, Doom, Mario 64, Half-Life, Starcraft, and now Gears of War. As for Guitar Hero 2, the only game that has made me go back and play it again like this is Starcraft.

So Guitar Hero 2 is the game that floored you? I wasn't sure by what I read in your comment.

Although there's nothing about it that really needs a new system (other than the screen resolution), and the fact that it's essentially a remake of an old Amiga game, I can play Super Stardust for hours.

Just remember, we don't know what this franchise is yet. Rockstar could deliver another smash hit like GTA...but there's also a chance we'll get another game that will sell like Manhunt or Table Tennis, both of which hit the clearance racks here.

Lemmings? Uniracers? (1)

FleaPlus (6935) | more than 7 years ago | (#20047193)

Hey, maybe Rockstar will go back to its DMA Design roots [wikipedia.org] and bring back Lemmings or Uniracers [wikipedia.org] .

Although actually, now that I think about it, I hope that those wouldn't be Sony exclusives, as both of those games would be awesome with a Wii control scheme. A Wii Remote would be great for controlling the Lemmings cursor, or twisting around to perform Uniracer stunts.

Lemmings is already on the PS3 as a downloadable title from Sony. It is also on the PSP.
It is mentioned already on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemmings_(video_game) [wikipedia.org]
"PlayStation portable remake" and "EyeToy remake".

PS3 Really Starting to Roll (1, Informative)

Yet another great exclusive for Sony to add to the lengthy list of great games like Resistance, Motorstorm, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Heavenly Sword, Hot Shots Golf, MGS, Final Fantasy, Little Big Planet, Killzone, and many more that I can't even remember. PS3 is starting to look like a killer console.

Re:PS3 Really Starting to Roll (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#20048907)

How much does Sony pay you to astroturf here, anyway?

And I agree, the PS3 has looked like a killer console for quite a while - it's first victim is probably going to be Sony, but it might manage to take out a few game developers while its at it too.

Re:PS3 Really Starting to Roll (1)

Dr Kool, PhD (173800) | more than 7 years ago | (#20049015)

I own a PS3 and I like to play it... that makes me an astroturfer?!?

There are tons of people here to seem to like XBox 360, they don't get accused of being astroturfers.

Re:PS3 Really Starting to Roll (1, Troll)

Khaed (544779) | more than 7 years ago | (#20049319)

It's pretty much guaranteed that any Sony post, you're going to post a ringing endorsement of Sony, with zero criticism ever on your part. You're one of the four or so slashdot users that I recognize the handle/nick of immediately because of your posting style and history: Every time there's news about Sony you harp on how great the PS3 is, or how much better BluRay is than HD, and your post history also contains you posting negatively to 360 related discussions. Sometimes you say things in an outlandish, flamebait way.

Personally, I don't think you're an astroturfer. Just pointing out why some might think that. It's more your presentation than you liking Sony (oh, but defending the RIAA a while ago was a bad idea -- especially since they're trying to collect royalties for non-RIAA artists through their new internet royalties rules). And note that yes, there are people accused of being astroturfers for other companies. I was accused of being one for Nintendo back before the two systems launched because I was excited about the motion control possibilities. But still, any time I see a Sony post, your handle comes to mind.

I own a PS3 and I like to play it, but I also don't present a list of games, 70% of which aren't even out, as a reason to get excited.

Then again, I have VF5, Oblivion, MotorStorm, NGS, and Resistance, and I've gotten to the point where I don't even need any more games. Maybe after I finish NGS.

New R* Franchises (1)

LKM (227954) | more than 7 years ago | (#20054253)

New R* franchises usually aren't too successfull. Which is a pity, because some of them are pretty cool games. Table Tennis, Manhunt and Bully got good reviews, yet they didn't sell too well. As an owner of a PS3, I'm glad to see a new R* game come my way, but I doubt it'll do too much good for the PS3 itself. Hopefully Sony didn't pay that much for it.

Re:New R* Franchises (1)

KoldKompress (1034414) | more than 7 years ago | (#20055067)

Hmm?

Manhunt got terrible reviews.. the only reason it sold at all was all the "BLOODIEST GAME EVAR!!1" talk that was flying about.

Table Tennis was really fun though, and I can't comment on Bully as I have never played it.

Re:New R* Franchises (1)

All Manhunt versions averaged reviews around 76%, with the highest reviews above 90%.

Rockstar (1)

Taulin (569009) | more than 7 years ago | (#20057095)

Rockstar makes anything good besides GTA? Let's see, there was "Red Dead Revolver" (no), that ping pong game (no), Bully (meh).. Manhunt was decent (hmm). Do they mean a "Rockstar" developed game, or distributed? While "Midnight Club" is pretty popular, I doubt people would be excited about an exclusive racing game. Besides PS3 already has Grand Torismo. Rockstar would have to pull something totally original, away from the sim slasher realm, to make this of any importance.

This will be good... (1)

A_Non_Moose (413034) | more than 7 years ago | (#20059315)

Rockstar: Games with Violence and Sex, even with Lies that it is not in the game.

Sony: Screwing the consumer with some latent, even blatant incompatabilities (usually discovered too late)
and outright fucking up machines with their trojan and even lying about it.

Sex, Lies and Video games....yeah, match made in...humm...heaven?...hell? Dunno.
