GTA IV Delayed Into Next Year

Zonk posted more than 7 years ago | from the grand-delayed-auto dept.

Games 138

1up has the news that Take Two is moving Grand Theft Auto IV's release out to Spring 2008. Sam Houser (the executive producer for Rockstar Games) says that the demands of creating games for the new consoles, along with the scope of the game, forced their hand to maintain the quality they wanted. "'With Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar is setting a new standard for next generation video games,' stated Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two. 'Certain elements of development proved to be more time-intensive than expected, especially given the commitment for a simultaneous release on two very different platforms. We all recognize that perfecting the game is vital and I can assure everyone it will be worth the wait.'"

I'm sure there's going to be a LOT of hate-messages about this, but to be honest, I don't have a problem with them delaying it to make sure they get it right. Although, the irony is that I did pre-order this game less than four days ago with the expectation of it being released in October. The bad part of this whole thing is that GTA IV will now miss the holiday season! DOH!

We can only hope that this move will not make Microsoft think they can get away with releasing certain other anticipated titles early without ironing out the details in order to get better sales than GTA.

Re:damn (1)

Das Modell (969371) | more than 7 years ago | (#20094143)

A delay is perfectly fine with me. There are tons of older 360 games I need to purchase and play (GRAWs, GoW, R6V, SCDA etc.), not to mention some upcoming ones like Bioshock and Mass Effect.

I *highly* recommend Rainbow Six Vegas. One of the best shooters I have played in a long time. GRAW2 pales in comparison, but the 'co-op campaign' mode (using 'campaign' very loosely) is a lot of fun with friends over Live. R6V might even be my favorite shooter EVAR!

I've played just about every other GTA game and was looking forward to the next installment. Having said that, if they've got serious issues (and putting it back 6 months says they do), then I'd rather they fix those issues rather than release a piece of crap on the market.

It sucks if you're a Take Two share holder though. Take Two & Rockstar would give Imagine [nvg.ntnu.no] a run for their money for fiscal mismanagement, broken promises and delays.

The PS3 is in desperate need of a blockbuster at the moment, Microsoft has Halo, Nintendo has Mario, and PS3 (while not a Sony creation) has GTA. Without Grand Theft Auto what killer blockbuster games do they have this X-mas? (I'm not talking "It's a good game with high review scores" I'm talking Buy the system, Pre-order the game, Million Seller right away kind of games)

The PS3 is outselling the 360 2-1 worldwide right now. The PS3 just sold 40k units last week alone in Japan.

Warhawk
Lair
Uncharted
Little Big Planet
GT Prologue
SOCOM
Ratchet and Clank
Heavenly Sword

Also, looking up some of the sales statistics for the game franchises you listed, None were really "Console Sellers" They sold well, and were by no means failures, But for example, no Rachet and Clank game has sold 3 million copies. Thats not a console seller, thats a solid game.

Console Sellers like Mario, Halo, or GTA, which sold 11, 8, and 12 Million respectively are in a class of their own.

The games you listed compare more to things like Paper Mario and Crackdown. Good high selling games that are fun to play on a system, but they don't move units.

Re:I wonder how this will affect Sony (0)

Hey mate, no offense, but he said "system sellers".

None of those will shift systems - a system seller is something like Nintendogs was for the DS - it sold 15 million copies, not something like Lair that will be incredibly lucky if it even gets to a million.

I'm still just a gamecube owner, but this xmas, 360s sales are going to be huge on the back of Halo 3, and Wii sales will be the same on Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Galaxy.

Sony are going to be struggling to do well over xmas without any such "system sellers". You may be excited by those games, but the general public is just going to go "meh" and stay away from the PS3.

Badly! (0, Troll)

tlh1005 (541240) | more than 7 years ago | (#20093617)

Unless Take Two uses the extra time to pull a rabbit out of their hat and deliver some extensive, exclusive feature(s) for the PS3 version. If the impending discount is true for the already cheaper 360, add the release of Halo 3 in and call it a much better Christmas for MS and a lump of coal for Sony.

Re:I wonder how this will affect Sony (3, Interesting)

Kohath (38547) | more than 7 years ago | (#20093827)

Lair
Heavenly Sword
Ratchet and Clank Future
Call of Duty 4 (cross platform)
Warhawk
Home (not exactly a game)
SingStar (will sell in Europe)
Assassin's Creed (cross platform)
Haze
Half Life 2 Orange Box (cross platform)
Rock Band (cross platform)
Guitar Hero 3 (cross platform)
Unreal Tournament 3
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Devil May Cry 4 (cross platform ?)
and some sports games

that's a pretty good list of highlights. Some will probably end up being delayed.

Re:I wonder how this will affect Sony (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#20093995)

So lets cut that down to exclusives:

Lair
Heavenly Sword
Ratchet and Clank Future
Warhawk
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

I have to say, I find this list more than a little underwhelming. Having played Heavenly Sword and Warhawk I would only consider purchasing two items on that list (being Ratchet and Clank, and Uncharted). Sorry, but I really don't see this list moving a lot of units.

Re:I wonder how this will affect Sony (1)

Kohath (38547) | more than 7 years ago | (#20094145)

Because no one buys a console to play non-exclusive games?

Someone who wants to buy Call of Duty 4 is going to need a console. They have 2 console choices. They need to decide what else they want to play, how much they want to pay, and whether they want to risk red-ring-of-death issues.

Re:I wonder how this will affect Sony (1)

aywwts4 (610966) | more than 7 years ago | (#20094273)

Yes people buy non-exclusives, but sadly most "normal" people wont hear about red-ring issues, so that wont really be a factor, the only real factor this xmas is which of the two is cheaper, So we will see how that price war goes down.

Though on this issue of Call of Duty, that wont really sell many consoles, just look at COD3 for 360, 1.6 million copies sold, that really wont move consoles. http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=2966 [vgchartz.com]

Assassin's Creed and GTA are the only cross platform games that look like they could sell more than 10 million with ease at the moment.

Re:I wonder how this will affect Sony (1)

COD3 was Yet Another WWII shooter.

Having played the Heavenly Sword demo, and been part of the Warhawk Beta test group, I think you're wrong.

They may not be games you're aiming for, but I thought they were great and will definitely move units once people see them.

Lair has the potential to move units based on the dragons meme (people just like dragons), Ratchet and Clank is safe in Insomniac's hands, and Uncharted does look cool.

We'll have to wait and see. Oh... you forgot to mention Home on that list of exclusives. Yeah, its not a game, but it is exclusive, and it does have the potential to help move units considering that on-line experience was one of the things MS had over Sony.

Metal Gear Solid 4

Many more. But all 4 of those should be huge.

Re:I wonder how this will affect Sony (1)

atomicstrawberry (955148) | more than 7 years ago | (#20098445)

Devil May Cry 4 is Multiplatform. Haze is multi-platform with PS3 having an exclusivity period of currently unknown length, and Unreal Tournament 3 is multi-platform PC and PS3 in November and 360 some time in 2008.

PS3 does have a strong lineup going into Christmas, but take out the multi-platform titles and the 360's lineup is undoubtedly stronger. PS3 needs a Halo or a Mass Effect or something which, rather than being a game you rush out to buy if you have a PS3, is a game you rush out to buy a PS3 to play. The games which will have that impact (MGS4, Final Fantasy XIII, and probably a few others) won't be around until next year. It's entirely possible that Uncharted may be one of these big system-sellers, but to be honest we've seen so little of it at this point that they've got a long way to go to get interest in it to that level.

Hopefully Sony are smart enough that they handle the Christmas rush so that they manage to push a lot of units out regardless. Otherwise Microsoft is going to get so much of a lead up that the PS3 will be physically unable to catch up. That would be bad for the whole market. Competition is a good thing.

MICROSOFT was the company that paid big $$$ for exclusive content in GTA4. Now that exclusive content is DELAYED. So the question should be "How will this affect Microsoft".

Sony has a HUGE library of AAA exclusives coming out in the next 1-6 months so they will be fine.

Re:I wonder how this will affect Sony (1)

enderjsv (1128541) | more than 7 years ago | (#20094725)

See, I have to really disagree with this one. Sure, Microsoft has exclusive content, but I don't know that it really matters. First, Microsoft already has a recognizable killer App coming out at the end of September. Grand Theft Auto, as another killer app, would probably be competing with Halo more than complimenting it. And face it, when people say Grand Theft Auto, they think PlayStation. The two were so connected for so long that anyone thinking of playing Grand Theft Auto without a console to support it would probably go instinctively to the PlayStation. But more importantly then all this is the long term. If Microsoft manages to gain a greater install base during this upcoming holiday season, then that will simply convince more people to buy GTA for the Xbox360 with its exclusive content, instead of the PlayStation version when GTA4 eventually does come out. Ironically, I see this delay as being very beneficial to Microsoft.

Except when the game comes out, MS and Sony will still be where they were before. The difference is that Sony will go another holiday season at a disadvantage, according to the OP.

Yes, we know. You tell us in every single thread. But they do not have BioShock (I know, there is PC version, some of us don't run Windows or want to upgrade a perfectly capable graphics card/RAM/etc which will all cost more than a 360 anyway), Mass Effect, Halo 3 (I know, the Sony troll response is IT LOOKS LAST GEN, save your keystrokes -- the game will still sell), Overlord (yes, a PC version, see earlier), Too Human -- except for Halo 3, all games I'm more interested in than Motorstorm and sports games. Also, they lost a few exclusives (if I recall correctly, Assassin's Creed was going to be), and Call of Duty: Airborne comes out for the 360 two months before the PS3 version -- and this is the first CoD game I've even been remotely interested in. See, I can list games, too.

The only exclusive Sony really has that interests me is Resistance: Fall of Man. And not enough to fork out $499 (or $599, or $399) plus the cost of the game. They may lose FF13, they lost launch exclusivity of GTA4 (which they had for VC and SA). I guess "they will be fine" means "they'll remain in third place."

FF13 itself is denied to be multi platform. They mean the "franchise" of FF13 will be multi platform. The main game is still PS3 exclusive.

For me personally the only one that temps me is Mass effect. I know a lot of the art dept and some of the programmers and want to support them but I am not a 360 gamer. I'm not really in non PC FPS's, sports games, etc.. And I got a PS3 so I'm hoping for a PC port. BioShock looks sort of interesting but I keep getting the impression of Oblivion with guns. I don't know why. I didn't really like oblivion.

SuperKendall (25149) | more than 7 years ago | (#20094225)

As another poster noted, Microsoft had more to gain from the GTA release as it had exclusive 360 content. This gives SOny more time to convince people to buy a PS3 instead of a 360 for the games that are coming out.

Re:Helps them, as it hurts Microsoft (1)

ZachPruckowski (918562) | more than 7 years ago | (#20096295)

At the same time though, Microsoft has Halo 3 coming out this fall, and they may not want that competing with GTA4. I am in the market for a 360 (waiting for the price cut later this month on the Premium), and I know that I wasn't going to buy Halo 3 at launch because I'd spend my money on GTA4. Now I may buy Halo 3 at launch when it's $50 instead of waiting until it drops in price in the Spring.

"I'm talking Buy the system, Pre-order the game, Million Seller right away kind of games"

Was that ever GTA4? Granted it was certainly the case for GTA3 for the PS2, but that was an exclusive release (originally) while GTA4 is going with a multi platform release. Maybe it would move some PS3s, but I think the 360 version will sell more copies of the game due to the larger install base, lower console price, and upcoming additional exclusive content. If anything this would have helped Microsoft sell consoles this Christmas more than it would have helped Sony.

Re:I wonder how this will affect Sony (1)

Enderandrew (866215) | more than 7 years ago | (#20096931)

Sony is very much desperate, but Sony also has Metal Gear Solid, Dragon Warrior, Devil May Cry, and Final Fantasy. I guess Devil May Cry is also getting a 360 release, and there are rumors Metal Gear might do the same, but I doubt it. Sony will do anything to placate those guys and keep Metal Gear as a PS3 exclusive, even if initially. Just as Metal Gear EVENTUALLY made it to the XBox, I'm sure MGS4 will be on the PS3 first, and get an XBox 360 port a year later.

Final Fantasy XIII is a ways off, but isn't it going to be like three separate games at once?

I'm probably going to buy a PS3 for Christmas and I certainly understand there aren't a whole lot of must-own exclusives on the PS3, but I'm not sweating it. The PS3 will be my BluRay player, I'll install Linux on it for fun, I can't wait until it gets hacked so it can be my emulator machine and replace my XBox. And, I'll be very content to play all the multi-platform titles on it. That is part of the reason I caved in and got the XBox. I wasn't interested in the XBox exclusives. The PS2 had all the best exclusives in my opinion, but the multiplatform titles (of which there are plenty) looked the best on the XBox due to superior hardware.

I'm still hoping that next year (hopefully) we'll finally get a proper next-gen upgrade to the Madden/NCAA games that really push the limits of the systems. Anyone remember the demo images they created with the crisp blades of grass/turf and snowflakes? EA said they believed the next-gen systems were capable of that, but we're basically using the same graphical engine largely that they've been using for over 10 years. From the PS1 to the PS2 there was this MAMMOTH jump up, and I keep assuming we might get another one.

Thank You 360's Crappy 7GB DVD Drive! (0, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#20093485)

Rockstar was praying for not having to deal with DVD again before the new consoles were released and Microsoft ended up making a console with only 7GB of space for developers compared to 8GB or so for a normal dual layer DVD.

And Rockstar has been publicly complaining about being forced to try to fit a free roaming city sized world into a smaller amount of space than last gen. And what is worse is the 360 doesn't even have a standard harddrive to rely on for developers.

You have to have a huge amount of sympathy for the Rockstar developers who are having to deal with the 360. A delay was inevitable and understandable given the huge problems supporting the 360 is for developers.

Just think what it would be like if the next version of Id or Valve's game was forced to fit on a standard CD ROM disc with no harddrive installation...Sigh...

While the DVD-9 in the 360 is woefully inadequate for next gen titles of this calibre, Rockstar have not said the reasons for the delay and the reason may be something totally unrelated.

Re:Thank You 360's Crappy 7GB DVD Drive! (1)

If that was the case, then only the 360 version would have been delayed. Unless you think it's Microsof deep pockets that are forcing a simultaneous release, which I doubt. But the hard drive is far more of a necessity on the PS3 due to the slower load times.

Yes, that is why multiplatform PS3 games have faster loading times like Oblivion, Dirt, ...

You lose Xbot. And so is your shitty Dreamcast 360.

Whyte Panther (868438) | more than 7 years ago | (#20093969)

And how many GB of your hard drive did you have to sacrifice to get those loading times? I've heard of 7 minute install proceedures on certain PS3 games. Inexcusable. That said, I will readily admit that I do not at this point own a PS3, and it has nothing to do with any perceived technical differences or limitations, it's the library. But the slower drive speed of the PS3 is commonly mentioned on /. and other sites, so that is where my assumption comes from. In short: PS3 may load fast because it uses the Hard Drive as a cache, big time. The 360 can't guarantee that, but can stream data off the disc faster than the PS3 can stream data of it's discs.

Hey now!

The Dreamcast was one of the greatest, fun consoles created, in its brief run it boasts more solid fun games than most consoles ever get in their first two years.

Don't start using the Dreamcast as fodder for your console war, May the departed rest in piece
(and regardless, if you really need to say these things why not compare it to a truly bad console like the Saturn or the 3D0)

Re:Thank You 360's Crappy 7GB DVD Drive! (1)

DrXym (126579) | more than 7 years ago | (#20098381)

I haven't noticed any game of mine on the PS3 that has loading problems. This is not surprising as the BD drive has a consistent data throughput which is frequently in excess of the variable throughput of the 360's DVD drive. I expect load times are similar as makes no difference. And no most games do not cache either but even if they did, good for them - the PS3 always has an HDD so why not take advantage of it.

When Nintendo used a crap format (N64 carts) they lost developers. We're talking about Nintendo here, an established presence at the time -- the NES and SNES had dominated their competition. Microsoft has sold a total of around 30 million consoles -- 20M X-Box, 10M 360s. Rounded, because I'm lazy and that's close enough. the N64 sold around that number. In addition, Nintendo actually did well in Japan, something Microsoft does not.

If MS's decision was actually hampering developers, they'd leave.

So take your whining somewhere the fuck else because it doesn't fit in with REALITY. Last gen, Sony had launch exclusivity for GTA:VC and GTA:SA. They lost that this generation. If anything, signs point to Sony pissing off Rockstar, not Microsoft. You never even back up things like:

And Rockstar has been publicly complaining about being forced to try to fit a free roaming city sized world into a smaller amount of space than last gen.

Where? I have no seen such a complaint -- and you'd think someone who hates MS enough to troll EVERY SINGLE GAMES POST might have a goddamn link handy for this. And don't tell me "MS is paying developers" unless you have a link for it. I love how everything MS does is shady or being paid for, but Sony is just this great consumer friendly corporation. I don't know what fairy tale land you live in, but in the world I live in, both companies fucking suck when it comes to the way they treat customers.

Re:Thank You 360's Crappy 7GB DVD Drive! (1)

Nintendo charged enormous royalties for using their cartridge formats.

DVD-9, though limiting compared to newer formats, is still cheaper to create games on than using a higher capacity format like Blu-ray or HD-DVD. This was not the case with the N64 vs. PS1. Not only did you have a larger capacity medium with CD vs. carts, but it also cost a lot less for developers to go with CD.

If it had been cheaper to stay with carts vs CD back when N64 came out, you would not have seen developers jumping ship anywhere near as quickly.

Yet again, I find myself asking the same question:

CAN YOU PROVIDE ANY PROOF THAT THE XBOX 360 LIMITS GAMES TO 7GB?

Every article that lists tech specs for the Xbox 360 describes its DVD-ROM drive as being a standard 12X DVD-ROM drive. That gives it a disc size of 9GB per disk.

You're either confused or purposely trolling. Given all the Sony astroturfers on this site, I know which one I'd bet on.

Re:Thank You 360's Crappy 7GB DVD Drive! (1, Flamebait)

DrXym (126579) | more than 7 years ago | (#20098433)

The usable space is only 7Gb. This is wholly inadequate for many next gen games when 5.1 surround sound, HD FMV and even textures & polygons are going to take 4-10x the space of last gen yet the disk is only 2x larger than last gen. And localized content is totally out of the question too.

Most filler games will probably still fit but there is going to be serious headaches for the "epic" titles to fit in that space. Only last week the PGR4 devs said they canned day / night options on their tracks since they didn't have the space to fit to pre-render the track data at the different lighting levels. While the GTA devs haven't said what their problem is, I would not be surprised if space was a major, major issue for them on the 360.

No marketing emails about this one eh? (3, Interesting)

necro2607 (771790) | more than 7 years ago | (#20093515)

Hmm, no marketing emails from Take-Two about this one, eh?

Yeah, this is a jab at Take-Two for repeatedly sending marketing emails out about a release date for a trailer for GTA IV. No, not a release date for the game, just a release date for a short trailer that shows very little if anything about the game.

I thought it was a bit excessive for them to email multiple times about a trailer. I can see emailing once, but I got a number of emails about the same thing. Wow, big deal guys. I would have been more interested in the later emails if they were going to be showing something of substance in the trailers, but they just showed some typical cutscene-style stuff. Blah, sure I'm burning karma with this post but I found it a bit frustrating to get constantly teased about a game (no, not even the game, a TRAILER for the game) and shown almost nothing. Now the game is delayed but of course I didn't receive that in my email inbox, did I? ...

Yes it could be possible Rockstar is HATING working with vector processors and an inferior graphics card that can't do near the poly count of the 360's. PS. If they want to maintain their adult audience, it should be rated "M". Part of what sets GTA apart from other great games is that it has a grown-up storyline (as opposed to silly Japanese stuff). I certainly wouldn't be interested in playing a "PG" version of GTA. That would be lame. What would the missions be? "We want you to go tell Mr. Koomba that he's a 'poopy-head'"? C'mon...

Re:How much do you want to bet... (1)

ivan256 (17499) | more than 7 years ago | (#20094317)

I think you're confused... AO is "more adult" than M, not less.... AO means "Not available for sale anywhere".

nlitement (1098451) | more than 7 years ago | (#20093603)

Consoles will get cheaper by then, well, at least X360 should. Also, a slightly larger user base will be available than there is right now, which means more sales, and Microsoft's exclusive episode packs (two of them) were announced for 2008. This should definitely boost sales and also give people time to save money on a console. Really, not a bad move if you're a patient fan.

GTAIV Looks Like Crap (1, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 7 years ago | (#20093641)

So far what we've seen of GTAIV looks like crap.

The environments are nowhere near next gen levels.
The art and characters are dreadfully drab compared to previous games.
Early previews of the game say it is a mess huge framerate problems, horrendous pop-in for geometry, and so on.

I have a hard time believing that this will be anything but the least popular GTA in the series. You really have to wonder if something major has gone wrong at Rockstar with key people leaving or other internal staffing or management problems.

I remember at E3 when Peter Moore described a "perfect storm" of gaming on the 360 - the perfect storm consisted of Madden 2007, Halo3 and GTA4. He said it was going to draw record-breaking sales numbers - D'oH!. I guess now we know a little more about why he's leaving MS...

I'm all for developers taking their time but delays always dissappoint. The gaming industry should better understand how to set expectations lower so that everyone is always pleasantly surprised. For example, at E3, Nintendo announced that Mario Galaxy will be available in December which was sooner than most expected.

Funny that the announcement of the delay comes a couple of weeks after the PS3 price cut. It could be just a coincidence but my guess is that Sony wanted to get a couple of weeks of good sales in before the announcement of doom from Take Two. As significant as a $100 cut is, it wouldn't have been nearly as tempting of a purchase now, knowing GTA4 is delayed.

This delay is to let the 360 HDD req. sink in (3, Interesting)

SuperKendall (25149) | more than 7 years ago | (#20094301)

A recent rumor [xboxfamily.com] has Microsoft dropping the Core system (with no HD) and allowing game makers to require the HDD version of the 360.

It seems like this move might be giving Rockstar enough time to re-tool the game to take advantage of the HDD requirement by allowing for more content (which would also benefit the PS3), and at the same time letting the HDD requirement for games sink into the buying populace and see how well it works out.

Time to write off Manhunt 2? (3, Interesting)

westlake (615356) | more than 7 years ago | (#20094571)

I think this makes the case for writing off Manhunt 2, which can only be a distraction.

The "M" rating is no longer a sure bet for GTA - and GTA is franchise gold. Rockstar has to get this one right.

2008 is a presidential election year - an election will almost certainly turn on core issues like Iraq and health care.
But it is all to easy to picture Rockstar in a another spectacular PR crack-up, the center of a messy, politically-charged debate over video game violence.

I wonder how this will affect Microsoft (1)

enderjsv (1128541) | more than 7 years ago | (#20094935)

First off, I just have to say before I say anything else is that I'm not a fanboy. I LOVED my PlayStation2 and I continue to hope that the PS3 eventually gets its act together and brings back the glory days of the last generation.

That said, for those of you who say this hurts the XBOX360 more than the PS3, I couldn't disagree with you more. This coming holiday season is a very important time for the two systems. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this holiday season is important enough to finally give one of the two systems a significant share of the market over the other. That's how important I consider it to be.

With that being said, an important part of any holiday season is to have an established killer app to push consoles. Xbox already has one. The PlayStation doesn't. While the previous score of- Xbox, 2 killer apps, PlayStation, 1, already seemed to tip the tide in Microsoft's favor, a score of 1-0 would be devastating. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that there aren't games coming out for the PlayStation that could be good and could eventually become killer apps, but "eventually" isn't going to sell consoles in this all important season.

Now for the exclusive content. GTA4 will eventually come out, and the exclusive content will probably still be there. If Microsoft gains a significant portion of the console market this holiday season, then the affects of the exclusive content in GTA4 could be even greater then they would have been if the game had been released this season. In a way, this delay could actually help MS more that hurt it in the long run.
