Vendetta: A Christmas Story

Christmas Cheer 257

Mundane Barbie writes "This is the funniest and the coolest online independent movies that I've seen since the original South Park. It's definitely a geek classic, just in time for the holidays. It's got Santa, and it's got guns. I've seen it posted at Newgrounds and also at their official site. Happy holidays! " Woh. This is /not/ for the easily offended - but if you thought the South Park movie was amusing, than you'll probably appreciate this.

Spam, Slashdot, and Crack: They Don't Mix (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 14 years ago | (#1463021)

I suppose annoying the hell out of people by spamming in the $13 domain registration thread (and every other thread you've posted in as far back as your user info goes) wasn't enough for you? You're back for more?

"You are all so full of hogwash and high on yourselves"
Wait. Can one be "full of hogwash"? I've heard "full of shit" and "a lot of hogwash," but never "full of hogwash." But coming from you, this is, somehow, extremely ironic. We may be high on ourselves, but you not seeming to realize that Slashdot could not care less about NPS Internet Solutions after the abundant feedback that you've been given would seem to indicate that you're on crack. Or extremely stupid, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

"This slashdot thing is a bunch of crock."
That's "a crock" to you, mister. And "Slashdot" should be capitalized. It's a matter of respect, but you evidently have none.

"I had my site up on slashdot and it got maybe 300 hits not enough to make my isp even notice."
To paraphrase a wonderful comment title I saw a while back: Earth to crackhead! (Was "stupid person," but, as I said, you're getting the benefit of the doubt.) If "up on Slashdot" means, "I spammed Slashdot with a whole bunch of trolls or just blatant spam comments featuring links to my site," sure your site was up on Slashdot. However, if it means, "I had a link from the front page," or even, "someone with some credibility linked to me," then, no, you're either lying, stupid, or on crack.
But the fact that you're getting so few hits from here, no matter what the circumstances, should be a SIGN. A big, bright, flashing neon sign two hundred feet tall: NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR SITE. In fact, you've probably encouraged any Slashdotter who might possibly want to visit your site not to do so.

"You all think this site is soooo popular and that your getting soooo many visitors, well your not and the /. effect is a myth, plain and simple."
If it's not soooo popular or not getting soooo many visitors, then why do you bother spamming it? Wait. I know! You're on crack! In fact, you may actually be stupid AND on crack!
And as for the /. effect being a myth, it only works for sites that Slashdotters might actually want to look at.

"npsis.net"
Fallacy: assuming anyone will actually want to visit your site.

Now, I admit, there's a small chance that you could be the greatest troll of all time, but since your site actually exists, this would be one hell of a lot of effort for a troll. Plus, trolls are better when they're funny. You, however, are just the first little bits of the last thing Slashdot wants in its comments: canned luncheon meat.

Thank you and please go away now.

redled (10595) | more than 14 years ago | (#1463023)

I wholeheartidly agree. Sure, you like linux. Does that mean you can knock some company for not spending its resources to produce code for it? Hell no. Apple's priority is of course to make software for the leading platforms, windows and mac. Does that mean that they are a group of anti-linux nazis? Of course not. I would imagine support for Sorenson to appear eventually -I don't think apple is ignoring the linux community altogether. And one other point: Hemos didn't install linux, download the movie, try and get it working, and discover it won't run on linux. GASP! Do you really think Hemos has the time to do all that, for the sake of a few idiots who want to complain? And if he did, should that fact have stopped him from posting the story? There are plenty of slashdotters who run an OS thats not called "linux", believe it or not, and there's no reason why they should be denied the information.

P.S.: How much did you pay for the slashdot service? How much did you pay to download the movie? How much have you payed to Apple to develop software lately?

Well I guess VMware would work. Just reboot to Win98. I'm a diehard Unix fan too but I accept that there are going to be Windows-only things and it is just the way it is going to be! That I say as I type this here on my Sun SS20 running Solaris and on another computer playing Half-life on my PC running Win98... then I've got my Alphastation running Linux and my other x86 box running Linux doing other stuff. Get with it man.. a true geek isn't limited to one platform! Linux is good for some things, Windows is good for others. Hell, if I could afford one I'd have a Mac G4 in here too. :-)

The economics of "boo hooing" (2)

Signal 11 (7608) | more than 14 years ago | (#1463055)

Uh, excuse me, but maybe you weren't paying attention in Open Source 101, so let me give you an "executive overview":
  • The free software movement has taken the position that proprietary hardware and standards is bad for the customer. They have also demonstrated this (repeatedly).
  • Open standards allows access to a wider audience, as well as supporting the diversification of technologies. In simpler terms: we can move forward quicker because we don't need to worry about 100% backwards compatibility - we're a recompile away from that at any given time.
  • Proprietary software (or hw) is based on either keeping your competitors from copying you (inevitably fails once the benefit from reverse-engineering exceeds the cost of it) in order to maintain a monopoly, and/or collect fees from your product. The latter is "ok" in my book so long as the license is non-exclusive and available to all, the former is morally reprehensible.

This is why proprietary codecs are bad - Apple has tried to corner the market on video and as a result the authors (probably blissfully unaware of this) cannot have the widest possible viewing audience. So, in a nutshell: due to market demand the codec will eventually be reverse-engineered and made available for linux, but in the meantime a good number of people are being denied access to media encoded on it simply because Apple wants to try to get a strangle-hold on the video market. Apple will fail because as the market grows, so too will the demand for an alternative to Apple's monopoly. Basic econ, my good man. But in the meantime, we are still stuck with not being able to view it... and I don't know about you.. but I'm an impatient guy!

Re:Boo-freakin'-hoo... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 14 years ago | (#1463081)

No offense, but the company that promotes itself as an alternate, amusingly only produces software for itself,a nd tht other OS. There might be some hypocricy in there somewhere, I dont know.

And one other point: Hemos didn't install linux, download the movie, try and get it working, and discover it won't run on linux. GASP!

The fact that he didn't do this (not that he couldn't have asked someone who had linux installed before, or used a friends linux box to test it) just demonstrates how /. is moving away from its grassroot users to mroe mainstream users (e.g. selling out). If you are going to post stuff your grass root users can't view, at least spend 5 minutes finding some way to convert it into a form they can view (e.g. MAKE a mpeg copy for us!).

P.S.: How much did you pay for the slashdot service?

This is an idiotic quote. /. got big because its core user group spread the word on how cool it was. Now /. is starting to ignore the users that got it started (commercializing). Just like some other companies we all know and love. IT really wouldn't be that hrad for Hemos to convert it before posting so all of us can watch it...

Yea, karma is a real distinction of those who pander and those who don't. Personally I would trust someone with a negative karam (could possibly think for themself) rather than someone with + karam (definitely has no independant though capabiity left).

Re:Boo-freakin'-hoo... (3)

cybersquid (24605) | more than 14 years ago | (#1463085)

That's not the point. Here's a quote from the xanim home page:

There is a new Star Wars trailer that has been recently released and it uses the currently unsupported Sorenson Video codec. I have contacted Sorenson about licensing their codec. They responded that Apple won't allow them to license it to others. You may want to nicely send a single email message to Sorenson [mailto] and Apple [mailto] asking about unix and/or xanim support for the Sorenson video codec.

For the record, I would gladly add support for Sorenson if allowed to.

I find it sad how disingenuous and clue-free Apple continues to be. They lobby heavily to get QuickTime accepted as an Internet standard, then refuse to allow non-Mac/Win folks access. This is consistent with their recent history. Bundled browser: Microsoft. Bundled Java: Microsoft.

One would almost think Microsoft had given them a large quantity of money... Naww! ;-)

By my watch it took about 20 minutes for crazyeddy.com to be overun by the /. effect.

What /. needs is a better way of doing this. Especially if your linking a 37 MB video. Granted CmdrTaco, Hemos, et. al. don't exactly have all the time in the world, but I think that for movie files like this, /. should at least set up a mirror for the file. It would save us, and the webmasters of the other site a great deal of pain. We could watch and laugh our heads off, the webmasters wouldn't crap in their pants when they find out they were /.'ed.

Re:Your Pathetic (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 14 years ago | (#1463109)

With your spelling here and your implication that NPW is someone to trust, I'd give a 50/50 chance that you're NPW.

I'd say that karma is no indication of whether or not you're someone to trust. It just says what the moderators think of you. It says that and only that, and anyone who says otherwise is just wrong. It's like SAT scores: all that they really measure is how well you can take the SAT. Interpret karma like that, and you shouldn't have any problems.

And I wouldn't trust NPW any farther than I could throw him. He's done some truly shameless pandering for hits. Far more shameless than any karma whore I've ever seen.

Re:Premiere too damn slow (2)

NMerriam (15122) | more than 14 years ago | (#1463120)

Premiere won't use multiple processors in any real sense. You can have it use 100% of one processor and set the OS to use the other, but that's as good as it gets.

Some plug-ins and extended versions will make use of the "other" processor than the one the main app is using, which can help a lot depending on what plug-ins/filters you're using, but just re-encoding from one format to another won't get any boost.

Does anyone know if Media Cleaner Pro uses multiple processors? I don't think so, but if it did that would make it immensely useful for this sort of thing...

Sorenson != Apple (1)

Oz Factor (63676) | more than 14 years ago | (#1463121)

This isn't really a "bitch at Apple" issue. Apple doesn't own the Sorenson codec. They simply license it from Sorenson to include in their QuickTime player. Other companies can do the same. Sure, Apple could port quicktime to linux and make you all happy, but a far easier proposal would be that some company that makes an existing player could license the codec.

Re:morons (1)

redled (10595) | more than 14 years ago | (#1463142)

True, south park has a lot of toilet humour. But it's also true, IMHO, that a great deal of the humour is political. For example, as I see it the show does not make fun of minorities, as it appears at face level, it is pointing out the fact that society does. Similarily, when Kenny dies and noone cares, they are in fact making fun of the fact that in real life, nobody cares if some kid dies. They only care if some celebrity does.

Slashdot effect (1)

Signal 11 (7608) | more than 14 years ago | (#1463157)

This has got to be the wierdest thing I've ever seen - a site that can pump out 5 continuous streams of 50k/s while being slashdotted and have an average latency of 100ms ! Whoah.

Of course.. it's unix.... Apache/1.3.0 to be exact. I want to know how that guy setup his box...

Re:So how do we watch it with Linux? (1)

Anonymous Coward | more than 14 years ago | (#1463159)

It's simple.

YOU DON'T.

Because Apple has in their infinite wisdom chosen to promote a strongly OSS-unfriendly video codec as their premiere format. Its half Apple's fault for using Sorenson, and half Sorenson's own fault for playing Grinch.

BOYCOTT SORENSON

Don't bother trying to watch this movie.

And once more, THANKS HEMOS

He's an aggressive one, though, replying to posts that see his trolls (or, at best, extremely unsubstantiated arguments with reliance on ad hominem attacks) for what they are to try and provoke a counterattack.

Plus, the trolls are bad ones. Good trolls are a joy. Bad ones just clutter up my screen.

crayz (1056) | more than 14 years ago | (#1463186)

First of all, Apple doesn't even own Sorenson, so stop bashing them without reason. Apple designed Quicktime so it can play Sorenson, they don't owe you shit.

If you want to write your own codec, or license the Sorenson one and write your own multimedia player, then do it. Until you do, stop bitching at Apple.

The Sorenson codec kicks ass, the quality of the video is very high and the size of the files are very small. If you can make one that is as good as that, then I'm sure people will use it. If you can't, and if no one donating their time to open-source can, then who gives a fuck what you think?

What you are doing would be like picking on Adobe just because Photoshop is better than Gimp and they have the balls to charge for it. Grow up.

I know this would be a rather poor solution, and it will very definitely go over poorly with vehemently open-source people, but perhaps if Apple and/or Sorenson were to release a binary plug-in for xanim?

I'd really like it if Apple released a QuickTime client for UNIX/Linux. But as that's not going to happen any time soon, at least a way to view Sorenson video on something other than Windows would be nice.

UNIX/Linux seems to be somewhat lacking in the streaming-media client field. Its great that I can serve QuickTime or RealAudio data: but it'd be even nicer to view it!

Re:Is this part of a Hollywood promo? (1)

Anonymous Coward | more than 14 years ago | (#1463193)

I would suspect as much. The Homepage bills this film as a "small" project `ala blair witch but from the camera work it seems that they put in considerable effort. And would you use quicktime for this kind of thing? Almost the only time I see quicktime used is for major studio promos. Phantom Menace anyone? The other likely possibility is that this was done with a university or local tv station's gear.

Re:So how do we watch it with Linux? (0)

Moderation on /. is so erratic and illogical that you probably have a better chance of having a comment moderated up if you write 'Moderate this up' in your post than if you write a meaningful argument. Meaningful arguments have to span a couple of lines and are often way to long to keep the interest of a short-attention-spanned moderator.

Since you're not an AC, I'll assume that you're serious and not trolling. (Hypocritical and unreasonable, I know, but an unreasonable hypocrite is what I am.)

You're twisting his words. He wasn't bashing Apple, and he wasn't bitching at them either. He made a prediction about Apple's long-term success based on their current model of doing business. He could say that Adobe will eventually lose out to the Gimp because Photoshop is closed-source. And he just might be right, too. The Gimp has been evolving much faster.... We'll see as time goes on.

And, honestly, saying "who gives a fuck what you think?" is about the best credibility destroyer there is. Sig11 has made a well reasoned post with substantiated points. You have completely misinterpreted his argument and made personal attacks.

300 hits? Hmm...did your site actually get linked as a main article such as this one? I submitted a story that got posted about a week ago and got about 12,000 hits in one day just from the link that said I submitted it. I can only imagine what the main link in that article got hit wise. If you have a good server set up, the slashdot effect shouldn't be a problem, but I wouldn't underestimate how many people actually go to these links.

Just because some people are bored enough to follow your spam-style links (the one in this message's parent included) doesn't mean you're getting the full on thing. I can't believe you even got 300 hits from it. (hits='seperate GET requests' in your mind, correct?)

Anyway, for a study done on the Slashdot Effect, previously linked to by Slashdot though done by an independent source, check out
The Slashdot Effect - An Analysis of Three Internet Publications [bnl.gov] , by Stephen Adler.

In addition to this, read his addendum [bnl.gov] , demonstrating what happenned after the original paper was mentioned here. Also bear in mind the fact that this was some time ago and that this site's userbase is growing all the time.

Boo-freakin'-hoo... (5)

punkass (70637) | more than 14 years ago | (#1463208)

Okay, so Sorenson isn't supported by Linux yet...boo-hoo...and Sorenson is a CSS project, so it must be bad, right? Give it up...when you all bought into Linux, you took the bad as well as the good...open-source software and a community of support is great, but you also bought into not always having the latest toys from every company in the industry, simply because not every vendor is interested and/or can support twelve different OSes. Want Sorenson? Start a campaign to let apple know that there's a market for it on Linux...or write your own codec, or converter, or something, anything...but don't do the /. bitch-and-moan because not every technology his handed to you on a silver frickin' platter...this is the price you pay for your OS...Windows users pay in stability and price, Mac pays for their OS in the fact that they deal with one company for all their hardware...every OS has its drawbacks, Linux included. Don't like it? Then change it, but don't complain here.

In the meantime, go to your local library or university and use one of their Windows or Mac machines to view the video.

If you haven't seen it, I'll summarize it for you: lots of people shoot lots of other people. And some of them are dressed like elves.

It's tripe like this that reinforces gun-control freaks in Congress, though. You just know that they're sitting in front of their computers, alternating between wanking off and bemoaning "If only we could get rid of all the guns in this society, Mrs Claus would've had a chance!" Please, people, don't feed the polito-trolls. The exact same point could've been made with the exact same amount of artistic value if the characters had run around throwing pies at each other. Note: that doesn't say much for the artistic value of this movie.

Sure, but recently, they've been posting pages and pages of shit! When anybody complains, they're moderated down. The trolls are fighting back by making it impossible to moderate effecively.

Why not try fighing back in an effective and mature way? For example, MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN SITE. I agree there are problems on this site and they aren't getting fixed. Is Portman's Clit going to help? I'm going to have to go with "No" on that one.

Why don't you trolls do something Good(TM) for a change and make your own news for nerds site? Done correctly, it could really put some competition out there for these guys and then we could have two good sites (kind of the same way Linux has KDE and GNOME)

Here is a concept:
Maybe it's their site, and they can post what they want. The constant flood of newbies in here who not only feel the need to view stories they have no interest in, but post complaints as well, is really annoying.
It's really simple folks, when you create a site, you can post any story you want, when you are visiting someone else's site, they may have some stuff that doesn't interest you. With me so far? Didn't think so.

I'll make it simple for all of you, if it doesn't interest you, don't read it. I know the first impulse is to click on the link and then get offended like someone MADE you read it, but resist this urge. Just walk away. If there is nothing here that interests you, maybe you should check out ZDNet. Go tell them how to run their site.

I post up something on zdnet for exampe and I can expect anywhere between 5,000 to 10,000 hits but no one talks about a zdnet effect. I think we have a little conspiracy of sorts going on here. A bunch of techie geeks want to promote their site so they start touting this supposed effect and thereby driving more traffic and hopefully revenue to their site. I no how it works. Slashdot readership pales in comparison to other news sites like zdnet, c/net, and the big boys like Times and CNN. You don't convince me of anything and your little report on the effect is nothing but a sham.
