Last Chance to Sign Up for 10-Year Anniversary Party

CmdrTaco posted more than 6 years ago | from the party-like-it's-2007 dept.

We have 700 T-Shirts coming in today and now we need to know where to ship them. So while you can continue to sign up for parties, today is the last day we'll be looking at the sign-ups to determine where to send shirts. You can sign up or host your own party and we'll try to mail lots of you schwag and ThinkGeek gift certificates. A note to people signed on for my party in Ann Arbor- we will be at Leopold Bros Oct 20. Pudge has a large party coming together near Seattle, Zonk has 30+ in Madison, and of course there's a big party in Palo Alto Oct 25 that Hemos & I will both be at as well. A reminder to all party planners- make SURE your email address is accurate so we can spam you guys and get snail mail addresses. Remember to take pictures/videos/etc at your local gatherings and submit them to us (we'll have an email address later). Whoever impresses us the most with their creativity in submission will win $1k ThinkGeek prize.

I for one look forward to meeting my 'Foobar' sig-correcting overlords.

Fakes? (3, Interesting)

Taco, how are you dealing with people faking a party to get the free swag?

Have to admit it came to my mind "hey free swag!", and so I'm sure others will take the bait and do exactly that even if I won't.

Re:Fakes? (2, Insightful)

stoolpigeon (454276) | more than 6 years ago | (#20914105)

Both 'parties' remotely close to where I live have 2 or 3 people. I wouldn't really call that a party - and I'm not going to go sit around in awkward silence with a couple other socially inept geeks just for a t-shirt. I get free shirts from vendors.

It's a cool idea - but doesn't seem to be getting a lot of traction.

I'm not sure what to make of that. I think it's an attempt at slighting me over that page - but I don't want to jump to conclusions. I'm just not finding it easy to think of it as a complimentary statement.

Or maybe it is a good humored jab and I should be laughing along. Just not enough to go on. But I'll go the laugh along route because I like to assume the best rather than the worst from people.

mgblst (80109) | more than 6 years ago | (#20916171)

My party has only a few people, but it is at a pub, so the worst you can do is have a drink, and go away feeling better about yourself. I know it can be tricky getting out of the basement, even for an hour or so, but you never know what you will find in the big world outside.

Faking a /. party for free swag has got to be one of the lamest things I've ever heard. It reminds me of Cartman pretending to be mentally handicapped so that he would win the Special Olympics.

What's next? Photoshopping (or, excuse me, GIMPing) some fake party pictures from a Mardi Gras website to try and win $1000 to ThinkGeek? Sheesh.

Your premise is faulty. A Slashdot party that no one attends would be the most authentic Slashdot party of all. After all, how many Slashdot readers would really come out of their basements just to hang out with each other? That's what IRC is for!

Slashdot PT Cruiser (2, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#20914097)

Ok, I know this is off topic, but I figure this is the best place to ask. A few weeks ago I was shopping for food in the East Bay (SF Bay Area) and when I walked out of the store there was a teal PT Cruiser with Slashdot logos on it. I needed to get home but I was curious if that was someone that worked for /. or just a really hard core fan.

Re:Slashdot PT Cruiser (2, Interesting)

Lumpy (12016) | more than 6 years ago | (#20914183)

Slashdot is part of a pool of pay for wierd advertising companies. you can whore yourself out for a couple of hundred bucks if you keep their sticker ad's that cover your car for 6 months. It's a paltry amount of money to look foolish as you drive around but several people around here do it. They want specific car types. Pt cruiser, Scion XB, etc..

you get peanuts for making your life and car a billboard.
I looked into it a year ago as a guy here at work did it, and I saw ebay, slashdot even digg in the lost of companies you can choose from. maybe I can find the phone number if you really want.

Does anyone know how to change the slashdot interface back to what it was a few hours ago? I'd love to view comments in "nested" view with a threshold of 2, like I have for many years. :-/

The current code seem to be a worse version of the "threaded" model. I don't want to be forced to click on every comment to read them, damnit! :-P

That was probably the latest ploy in geek recruiting. If you stepped too close the doors would have swung open, you'd have been dragged inside, driven to a secret location, dragged out and into an office building, placed at a work station, given an $80,000/yr job working with software or engineering and all the women around you for the rest of your life would give you dismissive looks.

Good thing you ran away!

I always wondered what was wrong with kdawson.

Now I know: he's from the "blinking lights are bombs" state. (Great quote from the police about how the Boston police should receive praise for not instantly shooting the MIT student with blinking lights in an airport.)

Maybe we'll get lucky and a concrete tile will become unglued and crush them. (Google "Big Dig" for an explanation of that, and remember it was paid for with federal tax dollars.)

I could only come if I was given a troll t-shirt (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#20914521)

I am one, probably of the many, who posts with eclectic humour only to see it mod'd more as troll than funny (if not passed over completely). Granted I am really trying for the +5funny, but comedy offends (especially bad comedy).

Found out about /. four years ago, while living in the valley of NoCal. Loved it. Still love it. Even if I dont intend to be a troll but apparently am.

Since I read far more than I post, I will always remain AC and will probably be here for the 20yr. I tried other sites like /. but most didnt have the educated voices. Digg being a prime example I just didn't dig it.

Keep up the good work /.. And for all you other unfunny comedians, keep trying. I laugh at many of the posts mod'd troll. Not the blatantly obvious trolls but the ones that border on and probably hinge on some faint perception of reality lost in THIS new 4th dimentia(sion).

Re:I could only come if I was given a troll t-shir (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#20914773)

Re:I could only come if I was given a troll t-shir (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#20914797)

That's exactly why the moderation system doesn't make any sense, at least not on the negative side.

Informative, interesting and funny are subjective views of the content of the post, whereas flamebait and troll are subjective views of the intentions of the author, which the moderator is not privy to. Essentially, a negative mod (besides overrated or offtopic) is an ascription of motive by the moderator to the post author.

Uninformative, uninteresting and unfunny would be far more sensible and balanced negative classifications.

For future reference, if you have to tell people which country a city is in, the odds are that they are not anywhere near it.

That said, I'm disappointed that there is no party in Swansea. We usually get a few dozen geeks on the beach for the university computer society beach party each summer, so getting a dozen in a pub to celebrate Slashdot incrementing its age counter shouldn't be that hard.

I'm organising a Slashdot party in Soviet Russia. I think Red Square, 1945 (we can piggyback on the victory celebrations) seems like a good place. Make your own way there, but there's probably space in my TARDIS for anyone who's too drunk to make their own way back.

I fear at these "parties" i will have even less of a chance to participate in the procreation of my species.

If there exists a real number x, such that 0 0
Otherwise, it will be the same as any other party, but with less hope.

I can't choose Serbia (nor Montenegro for that matter) on Create your own Slashdot Anniversary Party page. Not that I would have enough err... time to host it. Besides, there is slight chance my boss could see me there and thus have explicit proof that I am devoted slacker.

Anyway, happy anniversary, happy anniversary, happy anniversary, haaappy anniversary! [freerepublic.com]

Last chance to revert to the old comment system (0)

If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it. New comment system is horrid; it should not be the default. I don't like to login (at work) and disabling javascript (via noscript) breaks the old system.

Need more notice next time. (1)

NYC has a spot but it was hard to book as even though we're over run with venues they all book 6 weeks - 2 months in advance.
The twenty year party should have flying car accessibility and everyone should bring their gPhones and ...

Party Behavior (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#20916311)

Hi, I've a question.
I'm sort of new to this partying thing (okay, this is going to be my first non-family/non-children's party ever) and I'd like to hear some advice on what sort of behavior I should exhibit there. The party's going to be relatively small (about 5 people). I've asked Google already, but I figured some more information couldn't hurt, especially if it's more relevant.
I won't have to drink alcohol, will I?
Thanks in advance.

No, but it helps if you want to talk to girls.

Of course, this is a /. party so you won't have to worry about that.

Just take it easy on the Red Bull jello-shots.

Actually, given the nature of most of the slashdotters I know; give the booze to the girls. It makes a big difference if they're the ones with a distorted view of reality.

Lewis: [planning the party] Do any of you have dates, besides Gilbert? Lamar Latrell, Tri-Lam: I do! Booger: Yeah, but that's with a guy. Lewis: Well, what about you, Booger? Booger: I've been combing the High Schools all day!

Throw a Slashdot party? Who's paying for it? (1)

Mr.Fork (633378) | more than 6 years ago | (#20916621)

So, you want people to host a 'hurray we're 10 years old' Slashdot party, put our names in for some free t-shirts as an incentive. Who's paying for this party? Who benefits from the free advertising? I think you'll get some response... but not much.

Why didn't you guys just have a /. convention?!? Have guest speakers, charge fees, book it in Vegas, have presentations and awards for the best news stories, best comments, funniest comments, top member, you could really work it and at the end, have enough money left over to pay for hardware upgrades and bandwidth costs for a long long time. GEEKS LOVE CONVENTIONS -> it's why Star Trek conventions work dummies! Specially if they fall just before Porn-Ex in Vegas.

Great idea...
Does leave those of us outside North America out in the cold...

That being said... just in case this is an idea that finds it's way into reality... may I be the first to nominate:

One problem with all this... didn't your mummy ever warn you of the dangers of meeting people you chat to online in real life? Mine certainly did!

Seriously though... it will be great to see whether all you folks I've come to consider to be an extended, albeit highly dysfunctional, family are really the freaks I imagine you all to be, or whether I'm the only one?

I'd hate to have my illusions dashed by finding out I'm the only one on this site who isn't "normal"... One of the things that most attracted me to this site was intelligent discussion, interspersed with humour (and an enjoyable challenge it often is to try to work out which is which).

What about one of those personally-designed teal mugs? Those must be worth a fortune by now. Imagine having one as the official "best /. party" trophy! (Think "Stanley Cup", but less awkward to drink from it)
