Unreal Tournament 3 Beta Demo Now Out

Zonk posted about 7 years ago | from the multi-kill dept.

PC Games (Games) 97

Eurogamer notes that the beta demo for Unreal Tournament 3 is now available over at Fileplanet. "Currently the open beta demo is only available to Windows users, and will give you all a chance to test out a couple of maps and then leave your feedback for Epic Games so it can make a more polished end product - like a shoe."

uncledrax (112438) | about 7 years ago | (#20985043)

Yeap.. it's been out for several days now.. it's the hyper-paced action.. but it plays well on my lowly 6600GT..
If you run XP64 or Win2k3 64, there is a 64-bit patch you -might- need. You can find it on Epic's site at http://www.epicgames.com/download/UT3Demo-XP64-2K3.zip [epicgames.com]

That said..

Can I haz SDK now? kthx!

For Windows x64 you'll probably also need this workaround [epicgames.com] to even be able to install the game.

I did.

Not that you'd get that kind of support from other games companies. It's a beta demo, and they go out of their way to fix and work-around issues. It's beta, so you expect bugs. Just wow.

Re:Semi-Old News, and 64bit Info (1)

KDR_11k (778916) | about 7 years ago | (#20985797)

I don't really understand what a "beta demo" is even supposed to be. Beta = testing version to find bugs, demo = trial version to evaluate the program. What is the demo demonstrating if it's a buggy beta? Is that like saying "if this demo isn't as good as you expect that's because it's beta"?

Re:Semi-Old News, and 64bit Info (1)

CommunistHamster (949406) | about 7 years ago | (#20988177)

Presumably it is a more limited form of open beta. Open betas usually give you the full game to test.

Re:Semi-Old News, and 64bit Info (1)

aichpvee (631243) | about 7 years ago | (#20989423)

Yeah, it's only got like two maps and doesn't even have all of the multiplayer modes. The maps included aren't that great and the Enforcer looks really weak now. Not that you'd use that much, but it's still lame.

Re:Semi-Old News, and 64bit Info (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 7 years ago | (#20993591)

Re:Semi-Old News, and 64bit Info (1)

aichpvee (631243) | about 7 years ago | (#21018915)

Of course the Enforcer is weak (I actually wish it weren't, too much lasery shit in UT), but I was talking about how it looks. The old Enforcer looked sweet, the new one looks pretty crappy. Also looking pretty crappy are a lot of the explosion effects, unless there's a setting for "fucking awesome" that's off by default.

3 maps - Heat Ray, Shangrila, and Suspense - but I agree with you completely; the UT2k4 demo had Linux support the very second it came out (the Linux demo of this is delayed for days at best) and came with an Onslaught map out of the box.

Re:Semi-Old News, and 64bit Info (1)

aichpvee (631243) | about 7 years ago | (#21018895)

I only tried out the duel and VCTF modes. Is the third one a bigger, DM-only map? I don't have a windows box so I just played a few minutes of it at a friend's house.

Re:Semi-Old News, and 64bit Info (1)

AndyCR (1091663) | about 7 years ago | (#21020033)

Heat Ray is a medium-biggish DM map, Shangrila is a medium DM map, and Suspense is a small VCTF map.

Solder Fumes (797270) | about 7 years ago | (#20988281)

It's smooth as glass on my 8800. I didn't really like the feel of it at first, but it's a lot tighter if you turn off mouse smoothing. The graphics are busier and more dystopian than UT2004, so you'll sometimes need a sharp eye to pick out a target. Hoverboards are genius, as is being able to grapple a Manta and get a tow. Everyone's salivating over the descriptions of the Necris vehicles, and the Darkwalker in the Heatray DM map certainly delivers. It's a thing of fright and beauty to watch that tripod clumping through the buildings, occasionally slithering a leg up to grasp the side of a pillar or building for extra support.

Lots of things to fix...the server list is inexcusably broken, the Hellbender doesn't steer correctly, the auto trajectory on the flak cannon secondary was a bad idea and needs to go. Also you appear 2 feet taller than other players because the camera height is wrong. It's amazing they let such amateur mistakes get out into the public eye, while still investing so much time into the rest of the game.

Except Windows XP 64-bit edition. If you even manage to get the game installed, you'll have to use an epic developed work around trick. *Sigh* What next in a never ending parade of XP 64-bit incompatibility issues? At least this problem has a good chance of being dealt with, unlike certain other incompatibilities (I'm looking at you VS2k5.)

Re:Except... (1)

Jarjarthejedi (996957) | about 7 years ago | (#20985097)

No offense dude but complaining about incompatibility in a demo, much less 64 bit incompatibility (which has been a problem with many, many release products) is a little sad, especially when it is possible to get it to work. I had a problem with Supreme Commander's demo when it came out, and so did many ATI users, it's a part of demos and open betas to discover incompatibilities and correct them for the full product, the fact that 64 bit has a workaround at all is great news.

Behind quake? (-1, Flamebait)

Square Snow Man (985909) | about 7 years ago | (#20985141)

I think that the UT serie walks behind the Quake serie and is only improving it gameplay-wise (like if it where a mod or something). I can already predict the next game the guys at Epic will make, it will be a Quake Wars:ET clone using there Unreal Tournament franchise.. Why arnt they trying to come up with something more unique? Playing death matches and capture the flag is getting boring you know..

/not-trolling

Re:Behind quake? (1)

Jarjarthejedi (996957) | about 7 years ago | (#20985165)

I think that the recent surge of Halo 3 sales shows pretty clearly that CTF and Deathmatch is not getting boring for the majority (yes there are other gametypes but, besides territories, they're always vetoed when I play).

Re:Behind quake? (1)

bigstrat2003 (1058574) | about 7 years ago | (#20985347)

True, but they took out Assault in this version of UT! Bastards had to go and remove their best mode! *tantrum*

Re:Behind quake? (2, Funny)

KDR_11k (778916) | about 7 years ago | (#20985885)

They removed Assault in 2003, too. It was reintroduced in 2004. So expect a UT3.11 for Workgroups next year that includes Assault.

Re:Behind quake? (1)

sssssss27 (1117705) | about 7 years ago | (#20986515)

I don't know how far your comment is from the truth. They seem to be making two of the major mistakes they made with UT2003. The sniper rifle leaves a trail again and they removed assault.

Re:Behind quake? (1)

shoptroll (544006) | about 7 years ago | (#21015469)

Assault got rolled in with Onslaught to create Warfare. It's really up to the map makers how a level plays out now, which should make maps much more unique :)

Sniper rifle trails I can take or leave. I hated the lightning gun in 2003, but the implementation of the sniper rifle in 2004 was less than spectacular. UT3's feels like a nice compromise: I can pop headshots nicely but the game is going to discourage me from snipe camping. Not that big a deal with a tracer added to the gun.

Re:Behind quake? (2, Informative)

FlopEJoe (784551) | about 7 years ago | (#20985493)

CTF and Deathmatch is not getting boring for the majority

Completely agree! I wish the TF2 believed the same. I don't mind the control maps but they should have had more CTF in my opinion and more than just six maps total. Looks like the mappers are already on the ball so that should fill out the lack.

Re:Behind quake? (1)

will_die (586523) | about 7 years ago | (#20992073)

I always go for CTF since it is always fast paced and you can easily go on the attack or dig in and just do some killing as other other side attacks.
I do wish they would bring back the grappling hook, it was always fun to swing over the enemy or hide yourself in some dark corner and fire away.

Re:Behind quake? (1)

cbreaker (561297) | about 7 years ago | (#20996423)

I find that the one thing missing from most games these days is co-operative network play. You should be able to play the single-player game with a few friends, co-operatively.

I like co-op modes, it's relaxing and you can come up with neat ways to get things done. Shit, I mean even Doom had co-op modes and maps where you needed two or more players to do things at once to end the map.

Re:Epic's tradition: Low system requirements (1)

LiquidCoooled (634315) | about 7 years ago | (#20985341)

It is indeed impressive.
I have had a quick runthrough on this rig with its onboard nvidia 6100 shared memory thing.

It reminds me of the old amiga Alien Breed/doom days with chunky pixelblocks, but it simply means that the renderer can only do so much.

I would however prefer the rendering path to use fast polygon based (UT99 quality) graphics rather than trying to render the slower shader pathways.

I had to look up the system requirements to see that your sarcasm was set to the "on" position.

The demo will barely run on my roommates very quick 3200+ Athlon system, here are the "official" system reqs:

Minimum System Requirements

- Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista
- 2.0+ GHZ Single Core Processor
- 512 Mbytes of System RAM
- NVIDIA 6200+ or ATI Radeon 9600+ Video Card
- 8 GB of Free Hard Drive Space

Recommended System Requirements

- 2.4+ GHZ Dual Core Processor
- 1 GBytes of System RAM
- NVIDIA 7800GTX+ or ATI x1300+ Video Card
- 8 GB of Free Hard Drive Space

That's a low-end gaming machine these days. I just bought a new Motherboard (1066 FSB), a 2.66Ghz dual core 6750 with a 1333 FSB, 2GB of DDR2-800, and a GeForce 8800GTS for $700 off of newegg. With an aftermarket zalman quiet fan. I reused my 550 watt power supply, dvd burner, case, and SATA hard drive.

It's really not at all extreme for a modern 3d game. You gotta remember, an Athlon 3200+ is WAY old now. Wikipedia lists it's release date as

Athlon XP 3200+3 2333 MHz 512 KiB 333 MT/s 14x 1.65 V 79.2 W October 2003 AXDA3200DKV4D
The fact that a 4 year old microprocessor can barely play a not-yet-released game is not a slight against the game. It's a sign that your friend's gaming rig needs to be upgraded. Those minimum requirements fit an ancient computer, and the recommended requirements, which judging from Epic's past mean the game will run butter-smooth, are entirely reasonable. Just because the average spreadsheet reader hasn't seen fit to upgrade his computer in the past 4 years doesn't mean the rest of us have been sitting on our rears.

Those don't look exactly demanding of a modern PC to me. In fact, my 5 year old PC has all of those covered, albeit barely. Yeah, you wont get 60 fps, but come on, this PC was 900 bucks when I built it. A comparable costing PC now would do plenty fine.

After having spent the last few days playing the Orange Box, I have to admit this was a letdown. From someone who knows nothing about 3D Engine design, UT3 doesn't look like much of an graphical evolution, and apart from some creativity in vehicles the gameplay is pretty iterative. I'll still likely pick this sucker up, but it's relatively low on my list of gaming priorities this holiday season.

I hate Steam (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 7 years ago | (#20986671)

You can buy the Orange Box, and install the games, but you can't play them without a Steam account.

Every time you want to play, it re-authenticates you, so if your Internet connection goes down, you can't play your game (this makes sense for MMO's, but not for games that don't logically require an Internet connection).

Steam denies you your right of first sale (at least for purchased and digitally-downloaded content, I don't know how it manages that for boxed content).

So, I hate steam. I won't play games that require it. So, I am not playing Half Life 2 or any of the games that use that engine.

Therefore, UT3 doesn't have to outdo the Half Life engine in order to spark my interest...being just-as-good is more than enough.

I haven't hosted my own UT server for a while. If I recall, UDP 7777 is the only incoming port needed.

If you need to allow outgoing connections, there are a few more that you'll need to allow. If you don't mind opening up every possibility, try these UT2k4 ports recommended by a random Google search: UDP/TCP 7777-7788, 27900, and 42292.

I found a thread with your problem on the Epic forums: http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=578715 [epicgames.com] It's apparently only a problem with the demo and its large installer. The official response is to clear up around 850 megs on your C: drive and try again.

It will be polished in the end alright, like a turd not a show. The basic fact is no matter what you do to a turd - polish it, paint it, give it bling - it's still a turd, and there is nothing you can do about it. Open source on the other hand isn't. Why not spend time posting stories on more open-source games instead?

These guys have some pretty fast mirrors up for the UT3 demo:

I must have misread that because I thought it said fast mirrors..... :-)

hmm.. the eu server got me 800 KB/s which is fast considering I'm on 8Mbit/s DSL...

Graphical settings (1)

hansamurai (907719) | about 7 years ago | (#20986231)

Can someone help explain to me (and some coworkers who were talking about it this morning) what all the graphical settings. Specifically the relation between screen resolution, screen rendering percentage, and how UE3's post processing works into the equation? We are all pretty interested in what the screen rendering actually means.

Either way, I tried a variety of settings on my pretty old system (9800 pro, 1GB RAM, Athlon 1800+) and I could get a decent framerate but then it looked muddy, or a bad framerate but then it looked pretty good. I wasn't expecting the game to run on my system but it seems to scale decently at least.

As far as I can tell, the screen percentage setting works like this: if you set it below 100%, it renders the game at a lower resolution than your screen is set to and then upscales it. Badly.

That's also what Halo 3 does on the 360, BTW. Only you don't get to choose the resolution.

I have a powerful system and I can't get it to look good at all. What settings are you using?

I was shocked that the demo would even run on at all on my Radeon 9800. With a tweaked UTEngine.ini file I was hovering between 25-30 FPS. Of course by "tweaked" I mean stripping out most of the fancy eye candy. The map selection in the demo is a bit of a let-down, but the movement and nearly all the weapons feel great. Since this is a "beta" demo, I am hoping they will release an updated demo in a few weeks to fix some of the big issues and give everyone a look at what the final product should be like.

install didn't seem to work. (2, Funny)

I appear to be playing UT2k4 although I never installed that...anyone else have the same problem?

I know what you mean. Is this the right file? I appear to be playing the UT2004 demo with a fancy-schmancy graphics engine tacked on top.

Exactly....

Im very dissapointed with the graphics, this is exactly the kind of reason I bought 2 8800GTS 640s. And then when I start it up I get like 60 fps using only one card and it looks like im playing 2004.... is it just me or could that demo run on the UT2k4 engine and not lose any noticable detail...

Although I must say they have managed to keep the gameplay pretty much perfect.

Oh well, looks like im still waiting for farcry.

UT3 disappointing? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 7 years ago | (#20990619)

I realize this demo has ultra low quality textures to keep the size down and its beta quality, unfinished..etc... However in general it seems kind of watered down compared to UT2004. I only play ONS and I can't help but think ... "Watered down console game"
the announcer is tired compared to the hilarous crap they spouted in earlier versions. Every time I fire the sniper rifle I get a headshot?!? and it plays more like CS where you just die anytime you get hit.

What the hell did they do to the scorpion and hellbender? Honestly they should have just named them something different. The granades lobbed by the scorpion are less than useless.

I think that hoverboards are fun but at the same time giving rides and working as a team were ideals the hoverboard will counter somewhat.

I'll reserve some judgement for the final game but the demo just wasn't what I was expecting/waiting for all these *years*...

Maybe I'm being silly.. (1)

Kashgarinn (1036758) | about 7 years ago | (#20994473)

... But was it just me who was kind of disappointed that there's no real gameplay change from ut2004?

The pretty graphics are very pretty, but somehow I expected the gameplay to change with it, to be more real and cool. Instead I see opponents running and jumping around like cartoon-rabbits, which is very off-putting when the models are these huge, armored guys.

I love the new game engine, love the pretty, pretty graphics, but the wild-zany gameplay which is cloned exactly from ut2k4 is just a complete disappointment.

The demo is to me a classic case of why games aren't solely about graphics.. the gameplay needs to be on-par as well, and to me it isn't, I played this game almost 4 years ago and not sure why I should pay for the exact same game just a lil prettier.

K.

Why the hell would you want more realistic gameplay in UNREAL FUCKING TOURNAMENT? That is kind of the whole point of the game, what with the hairs-width-from-sarcastic scifi setting and ludicrous physics, along with the conspicuous plot of "Liandri Corporation has this like, ummm, fight club thing. Um...guns. I guess."

Admittedly q3 does it better, what with more fun physics and even more ridiculous player models, gore, weapons, etc, but that's another flame war. Heck, Quake4 hardly changed multiplayer at all from q3, mostly because the Q3/UT model of multiplayer is absolutely perfect, and has only been bastardized by newer, "more realistic" shooters like Halo and Counterstrike, etc.
