Topps Star Wars Galaxies (3, Informative)

eldavojohn (898314) | more than 6 years ago | (#21696736)

They mention conceptual artist Ralph McQuarrie [wikipedia.org] in these a lot--well, he's done many illustrations and paintings for collectible card sets. If you like these Christmas cards, I heavily recommend you collect the three Star Wars Galaxies Collectible Card sets put out by Topps in the early 1990s. I still have those three sets and still enjoy pulling them out every now and then and reading through the backs of the cards.

Most of the images on those cards are beautifully illustrated.

are the cards from the late seventies / early eighties worth any dough if they are in crap condition? I still have mine, one set has a red border and the other a blue border. I'm pretty sure they are 1979 cuz they are in the same shoebox with my 1979 topps baseball cards. I also have Andre Dawson's rookie card with the Expos in there (but that was 1978 I think)

Gotta love the caroling stormtroopers. Although, the mental image of them singing in that special stormtrooper way is now firmly lodged in my mind's ear..

KSHHHHT
"Deck the halls with"
KSHHHHT
"Boughs of holly,"
KSHHHHT
"Fa la la la la,"
KSHHHHT
"La la, la la.."

Re:This year (5, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#21697592)

Should have had Obi-Wan pop up next to them, using the force to make them sing. Then your mental image could have been:

Obi-Wan (quietly, slowly waving his hand): "Deck the halls with"

Stormtroopers (loudly, in unison): KSHHHHT "Deck the halls with"

Obi-Wan: (again, quietly, slowly waving his hand), "Boughs of holly"

Stormtroopers (loudly, in unison): KSHHHHT "Boughs of holly"

etc.

Reminds me of when I saw Ep 1 in the cinema (-1, Offtopic)

QuantumG (50515) | more than 6 years ago | (#21696852)

A whole bunch of us went and stood in line for like an hour to buy tickets. Most crowded movie opening I've ever been to. The whole time we're in line my friends are giving shit to this absolute slut in front of us. I don't use that word lightly. This girl was a disgrace. Anyway, the guy she was with was getting more and more pissed off with every underhanded comment about his girlfriend. As we finally got into the cinema to buy our tickets things had started to get out of hand. I believe the straw that broke the camel's back was when someone (maybe me) said "... anyway, who the hell brings a hooker to a movie?" *Bam* this guy is up in my friend's face. He was gunna kill him. My friend just couldn't stop laughing and saying "hey man, I didn't say it, but you gotta admit, it's accurate!" Security came in and dragged the guy out of line and his ditsy girlfriend didn't have any money to buy the tickets (its not like she had any pockets in that outfit). I don't even know if he got to see the movie, but considering the horridness of episode one, I think maybe we did him a favor.

Screw the rest of the people who gave you flack about this. Most of them are utterly clueless. You saw a slut, and said what many of us wouldn't have the balls to say. Women like that are an absolute disgrace, and the guy who was with her doesn't fare much better. They just take advantage of damaged goods. The thing is, it's HER choice to be garbage, and I think a lot of people forget that.

Re:Reminds me of when I saw Ep 1 in the cinema (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#21708766)

No, no, Americans just have this strange belief that it's wrong to show your body in certain ways. Even nudity isn't tolerated! And for example,, you can't put makeup on in just any way you like.

They have a real meddling and interfering society, they don't care about who you are, they only care about silly rules you must follow, even if you never agreed to those rules!

So picture this: they will assault you if you mind your own business and do no harm! For example, if a woman would do the groceries bare-breasted, they'd give her a lot of trouble, she might not get the groceries, even if she pays for them, and they might even lock her up against her will! And it's not like she had agreed to live by certain rules: picture this, if you are born within their borders, they want you to follow their rules. They don't even ask or give you an option to leave! Can you imagine that? Those people are obviously moral primitives, you'd better take care if you'd ever go there. And the rest of the planet ain't much better.

You're talking about 1979, right? I got exactly the same thought. Odd how when he walks round totally starkers it looks less odd.

You get a similar thing in cartoons - the Pink Panther happily wanders round in his birthday suit except when he goes to the beach, when he puts trunks on.

prelelat (201821) | more than 6 years ago | (#21697572)

Holy shit you know George Lucas! Oh wait I see what you did there. Because he re-worked star wars thats so funny.

Why can't people in Lucas Posts lay off the same stupid jokes. Who shot first, special effects and reworking original works, the force is a virus. Same freaking jokes every time makes them inherently not funny.

If you don't like the new movies, your not special around here, but I want to remember a time when Star Wars ment something. When Star Wars was like the coolest thing ever.

I think George Lucas got a call from god who told him that he needed to stop the worshiping of Star Was. Lucas answered with Episode 1.

Re:But wait! (0, Flamebait)

Rogerborg (306625) | more than 6 years ago | (#21698272)

Tell you what, I'll lay off the bad jokes when he stops raping my fucking childhood.

My own son is now the same age that I was when I saw Episode 4. I have an HD projector, a 150" screen and a surround sound system that can generate a small tsunami. And what does Lucas give me to show my kid? Remastered-Han-shoots-after-incompetent-shlub, Re-remastered-Han-shoots-at -the-same-time-as-some-incompetent-shlub-while-falling-over-drunkenly, or Han-shoots-first-in-LaserDisc-on-DVD-4:3-letterboxed-Dolby 2.0-crap-o-vision.

So, yes, Lucus-baiting is wearing a bit thin, but Lucas can end it right now by just giving the actual fans of his actual work what we actually want. Fair enough?

Re:But wait! (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#21699558)

>> when he stops raping my fucking childhood

George Lucas is not responsible for your fucking childhood.

Get a childhood, and then, get a life. Seriously, if making significant changes to a thirty year old movie is all it takes to traumatize your poor widdle ego, man, you got issues that goes beyond .5 past light speed. Get help.

Re:But wait! (1)

shawn(at)fsu (447153) | more than 6 years ago | (#21699646)

I love the (mis)overuse of the the word rape around here. Seriously, it was a movie. Thats all. You watched it when you were a kid and you liked it. It happened in the past and that past is fixed. Nothing done in the future will alter that past. If you're upset that you're child doesn't get the same enjoyment out of it you did, well no kidding, I'm sure their were things you're father liked as a kid that you didn't. Thats part of life.

Lucas can end it right now by just giving the actual fans of his actual work what we actually want.
Actual Fans How do you suppose we determine his actual fans. I'm sure their are people who like his new stuff just as much as their are people who liked his old stuff.
actual work Wait what? So becuase he did redid it, that makes it not his actual work?
actually want As soon as you're group goes from 1 to 1+n then good luck getting them to agree on what the want.

If your kid doesn't like it maybe he just isn't a nerd. Maybe you should play catch with him or something.
It's a movie and that's all it is. Nothing more.

I don't see how you really can. We've got prequels and special editions to wade through. (Amusingly, that's why that joke in particular was funny.)

Re:But wait! (1)

Hal_Porter (817932) | more than 6 years ago | (#21706862)

If you don't like the new movies, your not special around here, but I want to remember a time when Star Wars ment something.

You mean when you were eight?

These conversations are pretty creepy to be honest. Star Wars was a kids film in 1979 and the new films are aimed at the same demographic. Back when you were a kid, it was cool. But if you saw it now, it would be just another formulaic sci fi action movie. That's the problem - it's not that the new movies are sillier than the old ones, it's that you have grown up. I read an interview with Lucas about this. Someone mentioned that old Star Wars fans were complaining on the Internet that the new films were worse than the old ones and he said something like "I don't know what people saw in the old films. I made both the new and old films for kids".

It's pretty noticable that Lucas makes money out of merchandise. A zillion kids around the world is a better target market than 30 something basement dwellers. You know what, he'd probably rather that you didn't watch the new movies, because soccer moms might decide to take their kids to see something else if they see a bunch of old nerds in the line in front of them.

You're not supposed to enjoy this stuff when you're 30+. Go read a novel or something. Or watch movies that were made for adults. Your chilhood is over, and it has been for 20 years. That's not Lucas's fault.

Jawas (2, Interesting)

ciaohound (118419) | more than 6 years ago | (#21697300)

At first, I thought the card with the Jawas might be showing them picking over Santa's sleigh, maybe loading the scavenged contents into the sand crawler. And Santa? Captive of the Sand People, I would reckon. Obviously, that's too dark humor for Lucas.

Simple explanation... (1)

denzacar (181829) | more than 6 years ago | (#21700356)

Its all there in plain sight.

Evoks ate Santa back in 1983, and just like with storm troopers at the end of the "Return of the Jedi" - used his head for a drum.

In 1985 they tried (unsuccessfully) to trade the gifts to various races.

Not until 1994 did they manage to dump those gifts on anyone (apparently it is bad karma to eat Santa's) - until they bumped on a group of Jawas.
Those Jawas will take anything from anyone.

The Wookiee grandpa watching VR, immersive, softcore space-porn is the best part.

That, and the (admittedly) coked-up Carrie Fisher singing.

I skip to the "good" parts these days, and only watch it when I'm showing it to someone who hasn't seen it. The first time, I watched it straight through, and I had to start reading a book to stay awake during the 20-minute-long stretch with NO TALKING AT ALL, just Wookiee grunting.

Lucas should make a special edition of it. Any changes he might make could only make it more hilariously bad, which is a good thing, for once.

rosalindavenue (948022) | more than 6 years ago | (#21698592)

You know what's really disappointing is that McQuarrie (who is responsible in large part for the excellent designs of the first trilogies) is still around and painting, and doing great work, and LUCAS DIDN'T USE HIM ON THE PREQUELS. We ended up with the creepy, smooth, lounge-lizard Buck Rogers look of the prequels. What a shame.

I know someone at the Ranch and I get a LucasFilm Christmas card every year! Love them. I always look forward the new designs. One year there was a card with like 8-10 panels - snowflakes.

Someone mentioned about McQuarrie and the prequels - yeah it's a shame the direction those films went in. The original 3 were made when Lucas cared about the story and just used the Special Effects (SPFX) to help tell that story.

The prequels ended up being about the SPFX and if they had time for a story, they'd get some of that in there too.

Anyhow - Haven't gotten a 2007 card yet - hope it comes soon!
