Only as a punchline. "We'll see that when Duke Nukem Forever is released" will now imply a concrete date. Which would be disastrous for the type of person who reads and posts snarky comments on video game news posted to Slashdot. :-/

"We'll see that when Duke Nukem Forever is released" will now imply a concrete date.

Yeah I'm not jumping to that conclusion based on a cut-scene. There have been more complete trailers than that in years (many years) past. I'm sure not giving them the benefit of the doubt now. Still 100% vapor as far as I'm concerned.

Of course even if they did actually ship the game tomorrow, future comparisons to Duke Nukem would still imply a delay of over ten years, a lifetime in gaming.

The truth for me is that I have still not played a FPS that was more FUN than Duke3D... Sure I have played games with better graphics, better engines, better stories, better mechanics, better multiplayer. But I have yet to find a, FPS game that was so consistantly "fun". It was just the right blend of cartooney, hard boiled, tongue'in'cheek, and psudo-realisim. And I don't believe anyone else has got it quite right yet.

I will still buy it on release day. Even if I have top buy it in...

If it's a good game, people will care. If it's not, people won't. Really, what difference does it make how long it took to develop?

With all the rewrites, this is really Duke 7 anyway, with Duke 4-6 just not getting released.

I agree. For FMV it was horribly dated. The voice acting was bad and they didn't show anything that isn't in generic shooter #657. It seems like a desperate "Hey look at us. We are still alive!" ploy.

Don't teasers usually come before trailers?

Re:dont hold much hope regardless (1)

BiggerBoat (690886) | more than 6 years ago | (#21756792)

Yep. And 3D Realms has said they'll be following this teaser up with a full trailer eventually. Of course, 3D Realms has said a lot of things.

But there is definitely a difference between a teaser and a trailer, and comparing one to the other is just silly.

Holy crap. That's a game I would like to play, regardless of graphical crappiness. That thing looks FUN.

This teaser... not so much, but... I have to admit it has my interest piqued again. If they can follow it up with a proper trailer, I'm pretty sure the buzz will go back up.

Pharmboy (216950) | more than 6 years ago | (#21755680)

...and they spent all that time since 2001 just working on this teaser. Now they are gonna start working on the actual GAME.

Re:dont hold much hope regardless (1)

waffledoodle (1070284) | more than 6 years ago | (#21756850)

Why is this insightful? It was something some of the developers did on the side, for a Christmas party, for fun. "Last Saturday we had our annual company Christmas party. It was a lot of fun as usual but it featured one special surprise. It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever."

Re:dont hold much hope regardless (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#21755924)

If they would have actually finished that by 2003 it would have been a great game.

2008 is a few days away and all they have now is a teaser. Sounds like a LOT of backward progress in the past 7 years.

Re:dont hold much hope regardless (1)

antdude (79039) | more than 6 years ago | (#21756432)

Not much actual gameplay? Try none! (1)

lib3rtarian (1050840) | more than 6 years ago | (#21755434)

This is all just CGI. I didn't see anything in that badly edited cutscene that even remotely looked like in game footage. Plus, Duke looked stupid.

Re:Not much actual gameplay? Try none! (1)

BiggerBoat (690886) | more than 6 years ago | (#21756512)

From 3D Realms' George Broussard (as seen on Shacknews): "All the footage apart from the start and end logos was captured via Fraps in game and real-time."

Quote (0, Flamebait)

ledow (319597) | more than 6 years ago | (#21755440)

We STILL haven't got anything to show you. So we slipped a CGI artist a few hundred to knock up something very contrived and put a bad voice actor (who doesn't sound like the original Duke) over the last few seconds of the vid. We can't show gameplay, cos there isn't any. We can't show anything "new", cos there isn't anything. We can't even "hint" at what's coming, cos there's nothing. But if we release a trailer of CGI we'll still keep the Duke name going and make it look like we're actually doing some work on the game.

Not only nothing to see, but yet another nail in the Duke coffin. Just cancel the game, for god's sake, and get on with some real work.

Re:Quote (5, Informative)

Re:Quote (5, Informative)

Re:Quote (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#21756022)

Re:Quote (4, Interesting)

p0tat03 (985078) | more than 6 years ago | (#21756458)

Er... As another poster brought up, this was a video for a company Christmas party. Give it a break. Secondly, it IS the same voice actor. Thirdly, it's not CGI, it clearly comes out of the engine (look at the horrible normal mapping on Duke's pants). Fourth, it's got gameplay, albeit not a lot of it, but you can see a fair bit of in-engine in-game shots.

I don't get why the Slashdot groupthink is trashing this. It's been vaporware for way too long, I for one look forward to the possibility that it will get taken off the vaporware list in the foreseeable future.

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#21755820)

This is 3D Realms usual spin job. This isn't even something you could call a teaser. It was video they made for their Christmas party then George Boussard decided to release is publicly with moniker of 'teaser' to get their names back in the headlines. With recent new FPS releases that are making headlines, just like so many times before, they feel the need to remind people that they exist.

This is no indication of them being anywhere near release. It is still pure vaporware.

Cathoderoytube (1088737) | more than 6 years ago | (#21756032)

All I'm saying is this game had better redefine the first person shooter genre. It has to make every game made to date look like garbage. Literally, when I finally play Duke Nukem Forever, I had better have to look at my other games and seriously consider throwing them all in the garbage. This is my expectation of the game. As it stands now the teaser hasn't shown anything remotely impressive. It's just a lot of generic looking monsters swiping at the camera. The old 2001 trailer still looks better than this teaser. I suppose it's better to wait for an official trailer

You would kind of think they'd want their teasers to be good considering we've been waiting more than a decade for the game.
