The DIY Tank

samzenpus posted about 6 years ago | from the but-how-much-is-the-insurance dept.

It's funny. Laugh. 334

Will Foster, a Kettering University student, has built his own half sized Panzer tank. It took Will 2 years and around $10,000 to build his mini-tank and he says the process has been "a lot of trial and error...I'd buy a $200 part that didn't work, then go to a $300 part that didn't work before finding a $50 part that did." The tank is about as big as a small car, and can reach speeds of around 20 mph with its three-cylinder diesel engine. It runs on treads, has a cannon powered by compressed air from a scuba tank and parks wherever the hell it wants.

Re:panzer tank ??? (5, Informative)

Keith_Beef (166050) | about 6 years ago | (#22991558)

I believe that use of the word "Panzer" is a an abbreviation for "Panzerkampfwagen", which roughly means "armoured assault vehicle".

Re:panzer tank ??? (4, Funny)

sumdumass (711423) | about 6 years ago | (#22991616)

That why those german's lost the war. They didn't know if they were sending the armor division or a tank division into battle.

At least the English decided to name things a cover story dealing with potable water that was hiding the development of what became the first Tank. They only get confused if they forget their mission, it's either following the mess hall around or shooting up the enemy.

Re:panzer tank ??? (0)

A friend of mine from work once thought that steed was a type of horse. I think I was referring to my mountain bike as a 'steed' and as an explanation I talked about a 'steel horse' like in Bon Jovi's song. He argued that the lyrics were 'Steed Horse.'. Poor guy still gets harrassed about that to this day.

Re:panzer tank ??? (1)

Major Blud (789630) | about 6 years ago | (#22991290)

It looks like a replica of a Tiger I, which I believe is the Panzer V chassis.

Re:panzer tank ??? (5, Informative)

coyote_oww (749758) | about 6 years ago | (#22991472)

IIRC, the Panther was the PzKw V, Tiger was PzKw VI. The confusion is reasonable though, since the Tiger was actually deployed first (again IIRC). This model seems to be based on the Tiger.

Visually, the Panther and Tiger are striking different. The Panther has sloping front armor, the Tiger has a thicker unsloped front plate - not quite as sophisticated, a more brute-force approach to armoring a tank.

Also, as I recall, "Panzer" can be taken colloquially to mean "tank", but the full name of the machine is revealing "PanzerKamphWagen" - which literally translates as "armored fight(ing) vehicle".

I knew all that SL/ASL would come in handy someday!

Re:panzer tank ??? (2, Informative)

AKAImBatman (238306) | about 6 years ago | (#22991526)

The kid called it a half-scale replica of a Tiger I in the video. Just so there's no confusion. :-)

But its a English terminology thing... I can't seem to find the Churchill quote but he stated that German villians use U-boats wheras their British Heroes ride in Submarines.

Same thing with the usage of the Germans Panzer Tank.

In English, Panzer doesn't mean tank (4, Insightful)

Reality Master 201 (578873) | about 6 years ago | (#22991614)

The word "panzer" in English is a class noun that denotes a general type of tank, specifically German, usually of the WWII era.

Words in different languages mean different things, even if the sounds are the same, and even if the word is borrowed into another language. You're not insightful for your observation - you're ignorant of language and linguistics.

Re:panzer tank ??? (4, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | about 6 years ago | (#22991654)

We are Americans here! We are not supposed to know another language! We can say whatever heck we want! Remember that for us Yankees, Canada is the 51st state, UK is the 52nd, Paris is right beside Beijing and southbound from Baghdad, the Vietnam is close to Hawaii, there is nothing south of El Paso besides Illegal Aliens, Jungle and 3X beer, and Japan, Korea and Australia belong to the same continent.
So, now get of my lawn with your German classes!

Re:panzer tank ??? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 6 years ago | (#22991784)

"panzer already is german for 'tank'."

I thought it was the German adjective meaning "armoured". As in Panzerkampwagen (sp?) meaning "armoured fighting vehicle".

How many times have you been personally tazed by the cops? How many times have you interacted with them? I rest my case.

Even if you have been tazed, there are plenty of others who just got a ticket, billy clubed, shot, or let off with a warning o directions to where ever they were attempting to go before getting lost. Not all cops are tazer crazy.

Tiger I (4, Informative)

Black-Man (198831) | about 6 years ago | (#22991158)

It appears he modeled it after the Tiger I. I'd love to see if he got the road wheels properly replicated - the "Tiger" in Saving Private Ryan was built on a T-34 chassis and was well... lame. The only war movie I've seen w/ properly depicted tanks was "Iron Cross" in the 70's which used actual T-34 even though it was a T-34/85 which did not see service until 1944 and the movie was set in late '43 during the retreat from Kerch.

This kind of stuff makes me despair for humanity. Do we have to keep reminding ourselves about war? We should be forgetting about this kind of stuff, not paying homage to it by building model tanks. This money should be going into researching sustainable, peaceful communities for example.

Re:Le Sigh... (1)

CogDissident (951207) | about 6 years ago | (#22991600)

"It is from their foes, not their friends, that cities learn the lesson of building high walls." - Aristophanes

If one person forgets how to build the weapons of war, it doesn't mean that their enemies will do so as well.

While high morals are good, they need to be tempered with realism.

Re:Le Sigh... (1)

protolith (619345) | about 6 years ago | (#22991720)

Not a suprise such a pusilanimous view came from an "Anonymous Coward".

You should pay homage to the great weapons of war as the engineering marvels they are. Most of civilizations advancements came from developments associated with war. Don't try to deny that a fundamental of human nature is the ingrained desire to fuck up someone elses shit.

Instead of trying to pretend humans aren't advanced apes with a history of violence, remember that if you are standing with your head in the clouds thinking about "researching sustainable, peaceful communities", your feet are still on the backs of people that were beaten down.

Kupfernigk (1190345) | about 6 years ago | (#22991844)

If you want armor that is stronger than plywood and a little more performance, consider an Alvis Scorpion. Available in street legal form, max speed 45mph, and with the governor removed can achieve over 70. The interior space is limited, it's a bit noisy, but you could use it to shunt a Hummer until it fitted into a pickup, and would probably only need to touch up the paint a bit.

BTW can anybody tell me the actual engine (and gearbox) used on the Kettering version?
